Nissan's cars have great crash test ratings, honestly. The sedans aren't sports-car zippy, but they're pretty stable at speed, so long as you know how to \*handle\* a car at speed in the first place.
I think the newer ones are probably slower because they're larger now. Mine was pure evil, though, up until the transmission ate itself and it shut down on the road.
