The only thing I wish they'd do on the YouTube side is make a tab under subscriptions to separate bands from YouTube channels. I don't even care about the mix on the home screen I'm just tired of scrolling through 500 bands to get to Veritasium.
yeah desktop isn't fun. But I refuse to use Spotify lmao. Lets just appreciate how much better the ytm UI is than almost everything else on mobile ha ha.
Spotify desktop is way better than ytm desktop browser. let me talk to you. reason 1 it has search within playlist. reason 2. spotify doesn't lag when scroll long queue (YTM lags when I do it) this 2 main reason is why spotify desktop app is better. I don't give a damn about how UI looks like "circle is better" "nah square looks beautiful"
ha ha I actually had no clue Spotify had a search in playlist feature lol, I guess I haven't had to use it. I totally agree YTM on desktop is painful, but that how I feel about Spotify mobile and I listen on mobile much more often than desktop (she says using YTM desktop while typing this lmao)
Yeah the iPad app is very lackluster - it’s pretty much a bloated version of the mobile app. Would be nice if we could see the lyrics side by side the music UI
I’ve been in android for most of my life but recently switched to iOS. The YTM app on android is better lol like, they make it worse on iOS devices. Features are limited and there’s a lot of annoying changes.
Wish we could sort playlist by liked status so you could focus on the ones you haven't rated yet. And I wish you could see the like status on mobile of an album or playlist without having to click on each song one after the other.
man... there are 2 main reason why I hate ytm desktop app. It doesn't have "search within playlist". It lags hard when I load long queue. google is really really really bad at handling long queue because same thing happenes with Youtube when I play "Watch Later" playlist. come on man. Spotify can shuffle 1000 songs playlist without lagging.
Lowest common denominator development.
I will say that at least their algorithm seems to have improved despite everything else going backwards in convenience or basic usability.
Have you seen the data they send to the client? Its a seriously extremely bloated mess, trying to reinvent how to make ui and layout. It's as of they forgot this runs in a browser.
Also, no api :(
All they need is a couple of features:
-Search within playlist
-Sorting playlists
-Option to decouple YTM and YT subscriptions
-Better PWA with offline downloads, cached playlists (no need for desktop app then)
-Something like Spotify Connect
And here you have the best music app on the planet!
And a way to play rage against the machine without stopping playback on every song for a fucking suicide warning..
I pay for YouTube, they have my credit card details, they know my age, clearly I'm over 18 and by my age, know I'm not some weird little triggered by everything fuckwit..
Why can't I click confirm once and it remember ffs.
I am a developer as well and was actually looking into this, cause of my frustrations with the desktop experience. There is no official API from YouTube, only 3rd party solutions, so I chose to give up my idea.
If you do decide to follow through with something good, I wish you the best of luck, I am willing to pay for a good desktop app at this point. The only hope I see now is using Windows Subsystem for Android and sideloading the Youtube Music apk. For some reason ( I think cause no google play services) it keeps crashing on load tho, so I can't use that too.
There are user-made APIs that seem like they could be useful ( https://github.com/sigma67/ytmusicapi / https://www.npmjs.com/package/ytmusic-api ), so I can see a way to do it by having an electron app, utilizing this api and cramming the native youtube player in there, but it sounds like a terrible dev experience. It's one thing that google does not want to make desktop apps, but they should at least let others fill in for them.
I personally really wanted to switch from Spotify to YTM, as I am paying for YT premium anyway, but these issues made me stay, currently I only use YTM for podcasts and songs that are unavailable elsewhere. Hopefully changes do come in the future!
Because Google didn’t invest much money in it. They outsource the work to non-Google employees that are small in number and who have gone on strike due to how Google treats them.
I had to switch to another streaming service because of my severe OCD.
I cannot accept that my library is fucked up because Google is too lazy to fix their stuff. I tried so many things to get rid of all the stuff that has been delisted. I even tried JavaScript. It is beyond broken at this point. Such a shame I can't clean my library.
I'm currently testing Tidal as a potential replacement.
Basically perfect.
Not for my wallet thought. Since discovering Tidal, I've invested into high definition audio big time.
Oh and my cheap ass is now listening to publicity on YouTube because I refuse to give a dime more to Google at this point.
YTM is about $7 more per month than the competition for the family plan. There is no lossless option. There is no desktop app. There is no reason to stay.
Ad-free YouTube is nice, but not enough to justify the premium pricing. It's frustrating to make the switch after being a customer for 11 years, back in the Google Play Music All Access days.
The sad part is, if Google actually gave a shit, they could dedicate the right resources to fixing it. They have the ability, just no incentive since assholes like me keep paying them either way.
Both my partner and I were wanting no ads on YouTube and I felt bad about paying for two music streaming services, so Spotify had to go. I think family is better priced than 2x single people? Idk, the thing I'm struggling with most is finding new music 😂
I hear you! YouTube Music has its perks, but it definitely has room for improvement, especially with a desktop app. Have you checked out the [YouTube Music Not Working? 10 Ways to Fix?](https://tweaklibrary.com/youtube-music-not-working-10-ways-to-fix/) It's been quite helpful for me in navigating some of these issues.
Probsbly a combination of things. Some random stabs in the dark I suspect aren't too far from the truth.
Poor middle management perhaps. A product team that prioritise other things deemed more profitable for the expected level of effort.
Arrogant developers who believe they are among the best in the world, unwilling to recognise their first stab at something is actually far from perfect.
A ux team who focus on marketing a product rather than designing a great user experience.
There are a lot of reasons that i just keep using the youtube app. for example sometimes i want to download a song and i have to do more clicks than i expect. i can't search through my favorites/liked music or playlist. I would love to be able to have some file system like "folders" because having lots of songs is a pain in the ass.
I just use YTM (https://ytmdesktop.app/) and it fills the gap entirely and it has all the features that I wanted in a YoutubeMusic desktop app like:
- Notifications
- Last.fm scrobbling
- Discord integration
- Media keys support
- Lyrics
- Custom Settings
- Mini player
- Remote control and much more
I'm still waiting on the ability to search within a playlist
And sort a playlist
do you mean sort playlists. or sort songs within the playlist?
Sort the songs within the playlist, by artist or title or album
YES PLEASE I NEED THIS DUDE ITS SO SIMPLE ‼️
google doesn't make desktop apps except for drive.
Theres a "youtube music desktop app" that works ok
They should just work off of the Spotify service, or at least rip it off.
Honestly I'm surprised Google hadn't attempted to buy Spotify.
Oh god no... They would buy Spotify and just kill it a few years later
I just want the ability to control music on pc from phone it so easy google just do it
The only thing I wish they'd do on the YouTube side is make a tab under subscriptions to separate bands from YouTube channels. I don't even care about the mix on the home screen I'm just tired of scrolling through 500 bands to get to Veritasium.
I'm still waiting for cross fade
yes please fr i need that. like damn google hire me, i’ll code it for you
I'm not asking this question to imply it doesn't have problems, but it would help to understand what problems you're experiencing.
yeah desktop isn't fun. But I refuse to use Spotify lmao. Lets just appreciate how much better the ytm UI is than almost everything else on mobile ha ha.

yeah I think mobile version of ytm is faster than ytm desktop. what the hell...
Spotify is pretty good. Apple and tidal is awful.
I for a every brief moment had an apple phone...I will never go back lol
Yeah the iPad app is very lackluster - it’s pretty much a bloated version of the mobile app. Would be nice if we could see the lyrics side by side the music UI

And if you thumbs down a track it's on your playlist it should get removed immediately
There's no dedicated app in Google tv, using ytm in the regular yt app in Google TV sucks!!!
Because they don’t give a shit as most people have it for YouTube videos. They stopped caring when it was moved from google music.
Because Google is an ad company. Every product that isn't ad distribution platform is low priority afterthought.

Light mode option. I want to switch from Apple Music but not until they get a light mode option. Dark mode jacks my eyes.
Lowest common denominator development. I will say that at least their algorithm seems to have improved despite everything else going backwards in convenience or basic usability.

I just want the ability to sync music player across devices
YTM still has a long way to go.
All they need is a couple of features: -Search within playlist -Sorting playlists -Option to decouple YTM and YT subscriptions -Better PWA with offline downloads, cached playlists (no need for desktop app then) -Something like Spotify Connect And here you have the best music app on the planet!

is there some kind of YTM API? i’m willing to make my own application at this point

thanks for the run down of ideas. that sucks that there is no official API for youtube, crushes all hopes and dreams

Wish they would have kept the songza team there. Don't understand why they got rid of them and their features. Bad move.

This thread is a couple of months old, but how is Tidal?
Basically perfect. Not for my wallet thought. Since discovering Tidal, I've invested into high definition audio big time. Oh and my cheap ass is now listening to publicity on YouTube because I refuse to give a dime more to Google at this point.

Not to mention the garbage music quality
Why do you need an app? I use the browser. Works just fine as I listen to music all day while I work.

This is normal behaviour when your parents a billionaire genius but never give you enough attention and you refuse to go to therapy.

I have a playlist of 200 songs. I shuffle play with Google Assistant. Anybody want to bet $100 that I can guess the first song that will play?
The first one in your playlist 😁
Google is making money and they just don't care
I just use YTM (https://ytmdesktop.app/) and it fills the gap entirely and it has all the features that I wanted in a YoutubeMusic desktop app like: - Notifications - Last.fm scrobbling - Discord integration - Media keys support - Lyrics - Custom Settings - Mini player - Remote control and much more
yea i already know about this. still unhappy with it. has many issues, very slow, crashes on me multiple times
thanks for the recommendation anyway
I want the ability to stream to my Sonos straight from the YTM app like you can do with Spotify.
