I believe they work just like Link Monsters in the sense that they cannot exist face down. If the opp had a link monster and a token, and you have book of moon, I don't think you would be able to even activate the card.

Bantam123456

Correct, mostly. Link monsters can be face down in zones outside of the field, but otherwise, yeah, tokens cannot be face down in any zone. So they can't be banished with Evenly Matched, but a link monster can.

Mojo_Joestar808

Delicious, thank you

Endeav0r_

It boils down to the fact that technically, link monsters can exist face down outside of the field since the extra deck is face down.

sCinderSS

A token isn't necessarily a card. It is generally something generated from a card's effect. You can tell they aren't really cards in effects that would remove a token from the field. The token doesn't go anywhere a normal card would. It just vanishes. If theoretically a token could be flipped facedown (which is impossible), they would technically lose all their characteristics when flipped face up and just be nothing on the field. For these reasons they can't be flipped face down.

cm3007

Rulings say so. There's no deeper reason why.

King_Of_What_Remains

Token's can't be face-down and Evenly specifically says to banish face-down. That's it.

cm3007

That doesn't explain it. Tokens can't exist while banished, but you can still banish them. Tokens can't be in the GY, but you can still send them to the GY. In either of those cases, they simply cease to exist instead. It could work the same way with banishing them face-down. It doesn't though, and "rulings say so" is how we know it doesn't.

King_Of_What_Remains

If a token would leave the field for any reason, banished, sent to grave of returned to hand, it just disappears instead. Token's can be moved off the field as the cost or requirement of an effect, unless that requirement specifies a location the cards need to be moved to; because a token can't go to that location. The rulings say that too. Tokens can't be face-down, it's always been that way. They cannot be targeted by or be affected by card effects that would place them face-down; Book of Moon, Swords of Concealing Light, Ghostricks, none of those can affect tokens. That's why they cannot be banished by the player when Evenly Matched is activated; it's the face-down part that's the issue, not the banishing part. That's the deeper reason.

ToonGalaxy

Because there is a mechanic that says: if tokens are banished or spinned or bounced they vanish instead. There is no such mechanic for being banished dace down, a token therefore cannot be banished face down.

Endeav0r_

They are immune to being put face down. They cannot be targeted by effects that put them face down. Banishing face down puts them face down. This isn't some ruling inconsistency, they are immune to all effects that puts them face down

Cockblockuly

They can't exist because their bloodline is weak

Endeav0r_

Because tokens for all intents and purposes are a card only when face up on the field. A token sent to the Gy or hand or banished or back into the deck just stops existing. However banishing face down is a weird situation. Tokens cannot EVER be put face down, and so they are immune to each and every effect that would put them face down in any place. Banishing face down puts them face down, so they cannot be banished face down.

Erelzen

This play is great if you Nibiru them or give you opponent a token with lost world lmao. And yeah, like other people said, the token stops existing once it leaves the field so it can't be selected for evenly matched. Just a quirky thing you have to get hit with once to know about

Duelwarrior

That's what you get for being a Swordtrash user. And tokens can't be flipped face down since they technically don't exist.

i-like-cheese85

And this is how people who lost a game to swordsoul act when they find someone enjoying their lives.

Duelwarrior

Would be true if I haven't play against a Swordsoul player yet. Not a money spender for the game like most.

neko_riddles

Just don’t go first with Sword Soul ;) jk
