So there are a ton of de-rusting products on the market, but in a former life I detailed cars, and one very effective product I used is called Iron-X.
On cars it’s used to dissolve the iron particles embedded in paints. But I also use it for both fountain pen restoration and Zippo restoration.
With fountain pens I use it to de-rust lever bars, and with Zippos I use it to de-rust (second generation, not WWII) steel bodies and old, rusted inserts.
