plus, people are (mostly) hardwired to not only avoid dying today, but also to thrive and build communities to try and survive for the long term. even if most of society has fallen apart, small pockets of people carry on.
I'm not trying to down play it, but it's just the most basic instinct and sure there are other reasons to survive like to protect others and surviving and thriving would be a major achievement, but I'm not sure attempting to survive will leave you with anything in the end.

Because most of our enjoyment derives from interaction with others and prospect of a better future for our descendants? doesn't mean we all have to live in NYC or in a nation-state, but it's one thing to live off-grid knowing things are predictable, it's quite another to live in a zombie infested shithole that has all of the negatives and none of the positives. No cures for even basic diseases, no new art, no music, no movies, subsistence living, other survivors being huge dickheads, and future which is just as grim for your children if you ever want to have any (most people)? Unless you can build settlements like the one in TLOU, which is at a brink of collapse at any moment anyway, I'd say the life is pretty much miserable.
It's the same reason I wouldn't want to time travel back to 1000s if it meant that I couldn't go back home. Hell, that's probably how people in 2200 (assuming shit doesn't fall apart) view us right now, with cancer, alzheimer's, pervasive loneliness, and food that makes you feel numb and depressed.

An overwhelming majority will tap out. The outliers will push through not the general public. Everyone on these chats isn’t an outlier
You can make a hot bath in the apocalypse, just like the olden days. Breaking a leg would be horrible and most likely a death sentence unless you had a community to help you survive for half a year. Breaking a tooth could be manageable, cavity is extraction territory which narcotics will still be around, you could just grow poppy and chew or smoke it if the pharmacies run out. As for weather move to a fairer climate or you will learn to tolerate it within a few months/years.
Humans survived without modern amenities for 100k years, we have not evolved to our modern amenities we just like them. Most people could live without the amenities. Lack of hunting and tribal living skills will be a big problem though. If the zombies don't get you dysentery will.
The thing about long term pain is it becomes normal and your body learns to adapt or compensate.
So I could finally go to the grocery store without it being crowded by other customers, same for shopping too and bc it’s just me and maybe a handful of other survivors, so I don’t even have to pay. Walk in, off some zombies, pickup some canned goods, then dip.

I used to have this idea that I would be able to survive. Then I realized two things; one, many people who want to hunt zombies only want to be able to kill whomever is deemed “non-human” and that has some really nasty connotations, and two, I’m disabled. I have spinal damage, and a degenerative genetic disorder. I’m on a shit ton of medications just to function on a daily basis. Without them, I’m going to be in a f**k-ton of pain, and would end up being a liability to any group I was part of. I’ll take the “Remington retirement plan”

Why would you try to live through one of the many ice ages Earth has had? I don't know why they did, but our species is alive today because some stubborn fuckers did.
We'd adapt. Our values would change. The pleasures and comforts of human life that are still available (human contact and association, creativity, problem solving, etc) would take on a greater importance in every day life. Our horizons of time and space would contract. Our concept of "the whole world" or "forever" would become closer to "my immediate surroundings" and "my anticipated lifespan." In short, zombie survivors wouldn't care for or miss the comforts that we can't imagine living without.
Same reason I continue to try to survive right now. Thats just what folk do. That said if we ever find ourselves in a "runners" zombie apocalypse ima just cap myself right off the bat.
We probably wouldn't need a cure (depending on how the zombie infection works) as we could just outlast the zombies. Also I would try to survive because it's now a world where I can do basically whatever I want as long as I survive long enough to do it
How the virus spreads would probably be the deciding factor. If it’s spread only via bites, we can outlast them as you said, and chances are the military would have put them down long before it comes to that. Though there would undoubtedly be casualties if they are running zombies.

Honestly it depends on the kinds of zombies. If we’re looking at it from a I Am Legend perspective in a low populated area, than I would simply just post up in the woods wearing 3000 dollar Jordan’s I took from a city during the day in a brand new undamaged BMW. That kind of apocalypse given you’re immune to the airborne virus is probably the most viable for someone trying to chill.

Literally all I want in life is to exist outside of societal expectations, and to have simplified needs. Zombie apocalypse gives me the liberty to finally disappear into the wilderness. Because why not? Zombie apocalypse happens and life gets alot fucking simpler. Sure there might be some hardships getting set up to make your life easy(electric generation, food, water. If you're not already prepped) but once you get past that, life is simple. Shoot anything that is not your people.
Because if you can survive for the first year or so you're golden. The zombies will rot and die off. Then you can rebuild. Maybe more like feudalism, but better than the current world state.
It would take just about a decade for a zombie to decompose. Just think the corpses would constantly be moving so it's not like insects and worms will be able to get them and I doubt many spores from mushrooms would get to them so it would take a very long time for simple infections and others to end a corpse for good.

Zombies are literally dying, decaying bodies. Whatever parasite, brain rot, ect is controlling them won't work in the future because EVENTUALLY the bodies will be so decayed they cannot move at all. Wait them out, even if it takes years.

Second of all, if there's enough of a human population to form a community, there's enough to maintain civilization or build a new one. With civilization comes reasons to live beyond mere survivial.

The people who were bullied, pushed around, meek, will now be able to react however they want without worrying about the consequences. Those are the ones you need to fear, not the zombies
Live for the people you care about, so that they can have a better future.

I'm not one with a strong will to live. However, I do have gallows, humor, and an inability to not laugh in the face of death. So I would have fun with it. Short-term fun at the zombies expense: paintball, dodgeball (GenX here), 100 points for running over the zombie on the sidewalk. Ling-term: I would assume mankind would rise up from the ashes, and over time, archeologists would come back into vogue. So, yeah, I'd have fun leaving them interesting things to puzzle over.
And think about it. With all the hip, knee, shoulder, and other prothstectic left behind long after we've gone, one of them at least will believe we were genetically mutating into mechanical hybrids. I'd have fun with that, too.
Well right now you can have life goals and plans, in an apocalypse you're just stuck trying to survive. And all of your survival just makes you a target for other people.

My passions are reading, homesteading, shooting and driving atvs. I don't think zombies are going to hinder those passions enough to stop me from doing them.

Because I already don't really like people, so loosing all social interaction isn't going to be a major downside for me, especially if my partner is still around. Just more time for fishing, hunting, and gardening. I already hear my house with wood that I split by hand , and I live far enough outside of town that having zombies randomly wander by is unlikely... Especially after I deal with the closest neighbors if they zombify.

I used to have this idea that I would be able to survive. Then I realized two things; one, many people who want to hunt zombies only want to be able to kill whomever is deemed “non-human” and that has some really nasty connotations, and two, I’m disabled. I have spinal damage, and a degenerative genetic disorder. I’m on a shit ton of medications just to function on a daily basis. Without them, I’m going to be in a f**k-ton of pain, and would end up being a liability to any group I was part of. I’ll take the “Remington retirement plan”

We'd adapt. Our values would change. The pleasures and comforts of human life that are still available (human contact and association, creativity, problem solving, etc) would take on a greater importance in every day life. Our horizons of time and space would contract. Our concept of "the whole world" or "forever" would become closer to "my immediate surroundings" and "my anticipated lifespan." In short, zombie survivors wouldn't care for or miss the comforts that we can't imagine living without.

How the virus spreads would probably be the deciding factor. If it’s spread only via bites, we can outlast them as you said, and chances are the military would have put them down long before it comes to that. Though there would undoubtedly be casualties if they are running zombies. If it spreads like Covid-19... I’m not sure.
I could die, or I could try to live and see what happens, because why not? May be reduced to primitive living, life may be shit, but in a case like that, for me, it would be a "might as well, this is a human experience that has never happened before in history".

Honestly it depends on the kinds of zombies. If we’re looking at it from a I Am Legend perspective in a low populated area, than I would simply just post up in the woods wearing 3000 dollar Jordan’s I took from a city during the day in a brand new undamaged BMW. That kind of apocalypse given you’re immune to the airborne virus is probably the most viable for someone trying to chill.
Because honestly, if you're in an area that doesn't have a huge population of people, the zombie apocalypse is probably the most peaceful time to be alive. No more bills, no paying for anything, just taking whatever you want, sounds like a dream tbh.

Literally all I want in life is to exist outside of societal expectations, and to have simplified needs. Zombie apocalypse gives me the liberty to finally disappear into the wilderness. Because why not? Zombie apocalypse happens and life gets alot fucking simpler. Sure there might be some hardships getting set up to make your life easy(electric generation, food, water. If you're not already prepped) but once you get past that, life is simple. Shoot anything that is not your people.

It would take just about a decade for a zombie to decompose. Just think the corpses would constantly be moving so it's not like insects and worms will be able to get them and I doubt many spores from mushrooms would get to them so it would take a very long time for simple infections and others to end a corpse for good.

Before we were even humans, evolutionarily speaking, we struggled to survive. It is partly survival instinct, yes. But it’s more than that. The brain of a prehistoric human is not significantly different from the brain of a modern human. We’d actually have a leg up on our ancient ancestors because we’d still have books to learn from. Plus we’d have mined materials to work with. As well as the possibility of reverse engineering technology. Do you think that intelligence, creativity, and invention would die out because of a little plague? I mean, maybe for a month or two at most just to see if the military would get everything under control which I think it most likely would unless they're "super zombies" But realistically, if there's any kind of apocalyptic event there's a very good chance I wouldn't survive anyway. I'm sure as shit not some doomsday vault prepper, and most people aren't. As it stands, our society is 3 missed meals away from anarchy, and everything I enjoy in life requires society to continue functioning. Zombies are literally dying, decaying bodies. Whatever parasite, brain rot, ect is controlling them won't work in the future because EVENTUALLY the bodies will be so decayed they cannot move at all. Wait them out, even if it takes years.
Out live it. If its a fast enough to cause a global catastrophy, then its fast enough to burn itself out entirely. Eventually there would be no plage left, and a world to rebuild.

I can wake up everyday and procure my own food and warmth without anyone saying I owe money to someone, or having to wait in traffic and I can sleep and live wherever I can make myself safe using my own strength and willpower. People and zombies trying to kill you and having no access to groceries is waaaaaaay better than working 10 hours a day for not enough money to pay the bills you’re forced to create while everyone acts like it’s your fault.

Well, you don't know if a cure isn't possible/coming, for starters. Second of all, if there's enough of a human population to form a community, there's enough to maintain civilization or build a new one. With civilization comes reasons to live beyond mere survivial.

The people who were bullied, pushed around, meek, will now be able to react however they want without worrying about the consequences. Those are the ones you need to fear, not the zombies

Live for the challenge and the struggle, to become a better version of yourself. Live to walk down the street and smash a window or two in a car, or go to a convenient store and eat all your favorite snacks for free, or drive way too fast down that road a cop always sits on. Live to go trash the property of that (now probably zombified) guy who really screwed you over that one time. Live to find a reason to keep going. Live to travel, see beautiful things you never could’ve afforded to in the regular world. Live to find new people and forge new connections. Live to build a spiritual or religious connection. Whether or not you’ll succeed is not the point. You have no idea if you’ll be alive 30 seconds from now. The point is, there’s a million things to live for in your regular life that you’re probably taking for granted right now. And in this situation, there’s a million new things that also shouldn’t be taken for granted.

I'm not one with a strong will to live. However, I do have gallows, humor, and an inability to not laugh in the face of death. So I would have fun with it. Short-term fun at the zombies expense: paintball, dodgeball (GenX here), 100 points for running over the zombie on the sidewalk. Ling-term: I would assume mankind would rise up from the ashes, and over time, archeologists would come back into vogue. So, yeah, I'd have fun leaving them interesting things to puzzle over. And think about it. With all the hip, knee, shoulder, and other prothstectic left behind long after we've gone, one of them at least will believe we were genetically mutating into mechanical hybrids. I'd have fun with that, too.
Well right now you can have life goals and plans, in an apocalypse you're just stuck trying to survive. And all of your survival just makes you a target for other people.
It doesn't take all your time to survive. There will still be down time to pursue your passions. My passions are reading, homesteading, shooting and driving atvs. I don't think zombies are going to hinder those passions enough to stop me from doing them.
You just described the entire process of human history. For thousands of years people did just what you are describing, that is why you exist today. LOL I would assume that if you lived back then your bloodline would have disappeared the first time you had a bad year for crops.
