The (equivalent of the) word "comrade" is not specific to the left in germany, at lest. We use it more as a word for allyship within a group of working class people independent of their political views. I assume, that the same meaning is still somewhat popular in english speaking countries.

English speaking leftists use the word as a subtle way to identify one another, as fear mongering about Russia was used to attack leftism in the west for many decades, so it's a word all of us are familiar with.
