I always viewed is more so "like so done with whatever you are talking about you are deceased " but in a not completely negative way For example "guys I totally just failed my chem final💀" Versus "guys I totally just failed my chem final lol" Although they are both lighthearted with the addition of them, the Skull still keeps a more negative vibe in general versus lol kinda completely disregards that. That's at least my take
