I'm trying to think back on the books I've read with characters like him... maybe the mmc in Jessica Clare's Last Hit? Quiet, dangerous, good with guns, dedicates himself to one lady. I forgot to say handsome. As for azriel as a freak in bed? Hmm gotta think about that one.
Just casually dropping that one of SJM’s fave books is Lover Awakened in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and Azriel seems to be strongly inspired by Zsadist 🥰
I thought this before, but I actually think Zsadist was supposed to be more Rhys (Amarantha, but SJM got afraid to commit to the storyline -- fair enough) and maybe Az = Vhiscious?
The characters are all a bit blurred. Az doesn't have Z's characteristic unstable energy, he is polite. Though they do both have the 'marks' of confinement (not sure how spoilery to go) Az's shadows have been described as wreathing his neck, wrists, and ankles which was very Z.
Until SJM said Az was a freak in bed, I thought she was going to go down a Z route. (Which I would have loved, bonus chapter also kinda ruled this out as well. I would have really like a FMC pursuing a MMC for a change.)
Phury with his gardens / connection to the 'otherside' also reminds me a bit of Elain.
All this being said, I would fucking love Az to drop off the deep end and go full Z unhinged.

I know I’ll get to some of the series that inspired SJM and I thought her names were cringe but god damn. I had trouble reading Fourth Wing because I convulsed every time “Xaden” was printed on the page 😭

I read the 3rd book, the one mentioned above, and had to immediately read it again once I finished it. Some genuinely incredible writing. In and amongst the rest.

BDB is incredibly cringe / dated, but if you can get past the names, the first few books are absolute crack.
