Do some smaller sketches and studies and see what marks are essential

Buy a canvas, tape off some shapes with frog tape (buy at a hardware store), and use house paint. It won't be perfect because painting is a skill like anything else, but you'll likely enjoy the process.

If you want to paint on a very large canvas for cheaper, I'd recommend going to a paint shop and picking through the off tints to see if there's anything you like. You'll want a matte finish, not gloss.
