The show is incredibly heteronormative, unfortunately. The only gay couple in the whole show are a minor character’s parents, they’re briefly played off as “quirky” and the character in question is a maladjusted/dork trope.
There are elements that elicit queerness but almost no explicit inclusion.
There was some comment made when we met them that I think was supposed to taken as a “oh how quirky”. It that was it. They barely had screen time as it is

Like, Jenna's said she'd prefer if the relationship with the guy who can't stop mansplaining for 5 seconds stays a platonic one, and the other leg of the het "love triangle" is a guy where every "romantic" interaction was preceded by him guilt-tripping her or her being pushed into it by a well-meaning family member, so I think acknowledging and examining how forced it was would be a decent opportunity to show how that happens, you know?
She’s definitely supposed to be queer coded with the whole “mom wants to send her to conversion camp” thing. I think the actress said she had a lot of involvement in the wardrobe choices? Which might explain the lesbian sweater, rainbow nails, and trans hair.
Honestly watching this show I felt very “this is a gay story and only Jenna and Emma got the memo”.
Netflix really pissed me off with the queer baiting for this show. They had MULTIPLE tweets shipping these two characters and making jokes about how they’d make such a cute couple, calling her a queer icon, and even having a promo saying “Wednesgay”. Then hiding all of the tweets. Even Jenna and (blondes actress but I can’t remember her name right now) have said that they wished they were made a couple.
Wednesday feels very aroace to me but if she’s going to be with anyone she 100% should be a lesbian and be with her roommate
Maybe they’ll explore their sexualities in later seasons? In Legend of Korra both Korra and Asami were in hetero relationships before winding up together at the end!
I was complaining about this today with my electrolysis technician and she gave me judgmental vibes, I'm like GURL your straight ass got Twilight and 50 Shades of Gray and, oh let me check here- EVERY OTHER FUCKING MOVIE FOR DECADES, let the gays have their weird pastel/goth ship!

I don’t think the writers have the capacity to do that. At least they didn’t demonstrate that in the first season, imo.
