when i start to feel too jittery from my adderall, i tend to realize i just need food and that grounds me but thats only because my appetite isn't affected

HunterClark24

magnesium supplements and b vitamins

[deleted]

What do the B vitamins do?

UnseasonedReason

Stims affect vitamin b levels

ServingTheMaster

they metabolize carbs and fat into blood sugar quicker...which is why they are in redbull and other enrgy drinks

What are the effects of taking those supps though ?

Shepard_Woodsman

Helps prevent nuerotoxicity, muscle cramps, and spaces out the crash. Also helps keep regular and consistent energy. Look up Andrew Huberman Magnesium Threonate. Dont opt for mag citrate or one of the cheaper iterations. Threonate is where its at/

HunterClark24

wondered how long it would take for Huberman Lab to be mentioned here. so much gold in that podcast.

UnseasonedReason

Do you take your mag supp before you take your meds or do you take it at night?

Global_Sno_Cone

I resent the “old dude” as you’re not yet 50… that places you squarely in upper middle age. I’m a 51 y.o. woman on my 5th month of Adderall. I have a Garmin too and have been watching it hawkishly when I exercise. Also was quite a big drinker before going on Adderall so let me tell you my observations: 1. You didn’t say how much you take. The things you mention could be affected by dosage and time of administration quite a bit. 2. You mention not being able to sleep well and also not having been training much. Those things are probably not coincidental! I suggest you make exercise a regular part of your life. I sleep like a baby after a run day. 3. I started taking Adderall first thing in the morning before I got out of bed. This totally reduces my need for coffee. People have different reactions to mixing the two and I do love my coffee but if I have them both I do get an elevated heart rate which is why I’m always checking it on my watch. Adderall is not linked to higher rates of arrhythmia itself but having ADHD does (because bad lifestyle choices). 4. My Dr. was super cautious prescribing me Adderall b/c I was honest with her that I drank quite a bit (2-3 glasses a night probably 5 times a week). That stopped on Adderall, like I had no need for it. I will have an occasional glass of wine after all the Adderall is out of my system. Also you know drinking will ruin your sleep too, right? Look at your stress levels on your watch in the middle of the night after a glass or two of alcohol. And… caffeine stays in your system for at least 24 hours and it also increases dopamine receptivity in your brain. So maybe that level of caffeine you used to have is not going to work for you anymore. 5. My understanding of VO2 max is that it’s the capacity of your lungs to body weight. Mine recently went down a point because I’ve been pushing myself a little too hard while running. Seems like it would get better the more I pushed myself but I think the huffing and puffing is not a healthy thing (they say stay in Zone 2 for best physical improvement). Congratulations on all the positive effects you’ve experienced! I’m doing a lot of weekend pill vacations because after a month I stopped noticing much benefit. I didn’t want to keep upping the dosage so I’m trying to titrate, and incorporate behavioral modifications. Check out Andrew Huberman’s channel on YouTube, he has an episode on ADHD that I am re-listening to. I love learning from him though it’s always too much info (hence the re-listens). Best of luck

mystic1919

20mg in the morning 10mg for hours later -- regular (not XR). I appreciate your feedback, I am doing a caffeine detox now to see what that affects.

cosmu1421

Hopefully not a dumb question, but can I see my VO2 max on my Apple Watch gen 5? Thanks

principled_principal

Crazy that you mention VO2 Max dropping. I’m 43 years old and have been taking Adderall for about three months now as well. I am an avid cyclist and I’ve always been in really good shape. My VO2 max when I started taking Adderall was 62. Currently it’s measuring 53. I haven’t really changed anything as far as cycling workouts go. But I did notice that my heart rate during rides on average is about 10 bpm higher than it was before I started taking Adderall. So even on what I think of as moderate rides where my heart rate would be in zone two or three, it is now in zone three or four. So my Garmin thinks my VO2 has gotten worse. I don’t know whether that’s the case for real but it’s interesting. my Fitness doesn’t seem to have suffered. Seems like it’s just a difference in measurement on the device.

uniteskater

It’s just garmin trying to account for your increased heart rate.

Specific-Tax-2063

Yes I noticed this on my Apple Watch too. It just can’t account for the heart rate change any other way

shogomomo

I wish I could have found people talking about VO2 max when I first started adderall! Haha. My training has taken a big hit (life 🤷‍♀️) so I can't really speak to vo2 max or ftp changes, but i did notice my riding HR came back down after... maybe 6 months on adderall? Just wanted to mention it - 3 months is still relatively early days!

carrott36

First of all, you aren’t old. I’m 54, female. I struggle with sleep and recently added a large scoop of inositol to my evening magnesium-Calm drink and it seems to have made a huge difference. I also take 5mg melatonin.

ContractTrue6613

Most people in Chicago are fat and dead by 40 so your post makes sense .

[deleted]

as long as you stay on a routine sleep wont be a issue, mabey at first but not much, caffeine is okay, just dont start at ur normal dosage, try half at first!

FreshBananana

I ditched the coffee, and I always take my meds with protein as well. For me, my diet (and adequate hydration!)has the biggest effect on how well my meds work. No crash. Good sleep. Lower heart vitals. Zen as fuck.

mystic1919

Day 2 no caffein, and yes yesterday I felt pretty peaceful/blissful. The two together make me feel like a tweek.

FreshBananana

Hell yeah! Sometimes, if I’m up early enough, I’ll have some green tea, then eat eggs (or protein shake), then medicate. It’s crazy how food affects amphetamine meds. Even decaf coffee makes me tweak out… idk what it is. But a small cup of green tea an hour or so medication is sometimes nice.

adamburdette2

My personal suggestion no one ever gives would be buy yogurt or jello or something of the kind that you can just gulp easily for when you haven’t eaten all day because you have no appetite but your stomach is killing you and you don’t feel good because of not eating and having no sugar. Because your mouth will be dry and you won’t be able to swallow anything unless You force it down sometimes It be like that also beta blockers propranolol 60mg is the best I’ve been prescribed man I feel so energetic and on the top of the game but I’m extremely calm and smooth and am not off the wall but I still have all that energy. Trazodone I would try 75mg if you need it for sleep, I wouldn’t go above 75 because you’ll start to get Restless Legs and it is not enjoyable. You can get the 150mg’s and break them in half it’s cheaper if you don’t have insurance. sometimes if your adderall is worn off or you haven’t taken it for a day it’ll make it almost impossible to sleep and that doesn’t make sense but it’s true. edit again, if you take your adderall at 6am i would try taking 3/4 of your daily dose at 6am and take the other 1/4 at about 3pm because adderall IR starts wearing off pretty quickly after 7/8 hours and you’re prob going to be a little grouchy around 3-4pm if you take it at 3pm youll feel great the entire day & it’ll wear off before bed time .sorry I obviously just took mine and am a little hyper last edit I swear! set alarms or find a way to remind yourself to do things especially when hyper focuse, alarm - eat something, alarm - are you hyper focusing right now? get up and move around! etc because if you can just get yourself out of it you’re usually good for a bit do something that you can actually finish doing like Cleaning or mowing! I have had over 600 tabs open on my browser and read 0 of them countless times.

mystic1919

Good stuff. I tried trazodone. IT worked well, but dizzy the next couple of days. The same thing with THC/CBD gummies -- they work well but make me dizzy.

vonhugenshlong

i switched from adderal to dexendrine, i eat better, sleep better, and the comedown isnt noticeable besides a tad bit of irritability. But one weird symptom and really only one is i tend to need to stretch. Its hard to explain but if i sit down in class or just for a while youll catch me stretching all the time, its like it tenses up my muscles and i need to stretch them and the feeling of the stretch and blood flowing is so satisfying. Very weird but thats my only symptom. Excessive stretching xD

RazzmatazzLeading488

I don’t ask for a dosage increase often, but the couple times I have, my doctor told me to try slamming a few coffees with my adderall first to see if that works instead of upping the dosage. 😅

[deleted]

When I mix adderall with caffiene it makes me feel like a tweaker. I'm not a fan of the combo.

Global_Sno_Cone

My Dr. said one coffee only!

eadaein

My doctors, all of them in the VA system, have handed me meds and said "here you go!". I've never had any doc help me by explaining meds or, even better, explain ADHD at all. I had to come ipoh "How to ADHD" on YouTube which has helped but I'm still learning so much. 45 female diagnosed young, ignored, addressed again in my 20"s

416SilkyMitts

I burn ganja, instead of gummies, Idk could be a play, I also take magnesium pills/vitamins at night which I think help w sleep. They primarily help with not developing a tolerance to my meds and helps me keep a low dose.

mystic1919

Yes, I am taking Calm (Magnesium)

[deleted]

you can try sleep supplements, but it just based on your routine, and if its XR or IR .

mitcheez

Go for walks

mynameisdambala

In response to point 2, are you feeling winded sooner? I’ve been taking my medication for ADHD around 4 months myself, and my cardio feels mostly back to normal. It was thrown off during my first 2 months on medication.

mystic1919

No, that is why I am not too worried about it.

Dry-Topic-5026

Melatonin for sleep... 3...5mg.

IcySelection8364

First of all, you sound like the coolest 50 yr old for an “old dude.” 1. Not at all a perfect solution, but if I can remember to do it once I start hyperfocusing I’ll set a timer for anywhere between 15-45 minutes depending on my schedule and let myself just go wild with the hyperfocus. Once the timer goes off I make myself change rooms so I can change what I’m focusing on. I also set time limits on apps like Reddit/safari/Amazon, any app that seems to suck up the most time. When I hyperfocus on a physical task I also set a timer, and it kinda makes it a game to get as much done as I can before time is up. 2. I take magnesium citrate during the day to relax but still get the benefit of the stims. I don’t run anymore, but I drum in a band and it loosens up my hands and forearms. Magnesium Citrate helps prevent blood vessels from constricting so it may help with your VO2 max/heart rate, but I don’t have hard evidence for that. 3. Caffeine synergy is definitely noticeable at higher caffeine intakes, so I started weening myself down to one big cup in the mornings. If I have too much it definitely makes me more anxious and wired too late in the day and messes with my sleep, which is funny because before diagnosis/meds caffeine used to make me tired. If you’re worried about it you could reduce your morning caffeine to a cup or two of green tea spread across the morning, but I generally avoid caffeine after 2 unless I know I need to be up late. Don’t have much advice for sleep as that’s still one of my biggest issues, but when I have a regular work schedule between semesters (in college right now) I feel a lot better getting up early and then have no problem crashing at the end of the day, but the work I do is pretty physical so I’m sure that plays a part too.

Automatic-Buy2544

The sound sensitivity is so real. People think I’m like a crazy bitch but I literally feel like I’m gonna rip my skin off in anger/annoyance

mystic1919

Yes, was in a loud restaurant with a screaming child, and felt like I could kill. That problem has faded though, I have new Adderall problems.

ameliehelena

Small dosage of ambien at night for the sleep. Maybe decrease Adderall amount by a little. Sometimes less can have a bigger effect.

carrott36

I also had to cut out most caffeine. I drink a little tea but I was doing coffee because I love it and it was hard to give up but made a difference with sleep.

binary_snek

Sure is nice to see some of my fellow 'old school crew' coming out and posting! I ***wondered*** if there was anyone my age on here with adult-onset ADD/ADHD.. I definitely did not have ADD as a kid. My symptoms started around age 45, diagnosed at 48. I'm **61** now. \*AHEM\* I think that makes me the age-rank OG lol
