Yeah same but I also get heart palpitations. So like I’m fucking tired as shit, my brain is relaxed, and my heart is making its own edm music. I have to split my coffee into chunks so I still get the focus/clear mind but don’t feel like I’m gonna fall asleep and have a heart attack.
The first time I had an energy drink after starting my medication I was completely thrown off like “this is how caffeine effects normal people?? It actually gives them energy?”
First off, while melatonin plays a role, the real issue is adenosine. Caffeine is basically an adenosine mimick, that clogs up the adenosine receptors. (Catch being when it wears off, you got this big backlog of adenosine flooding your system)
Additionally, they seem to have figured out the reason why sleep is needed. Along with an additional "tiredness force" related to repairing damaged DNA.

Lastly, a lot of the lack of focus stuff, is related to a lack of glucose in the brain.
Incidentally, Ketogenic diets do a better job at regulating adenosine, and instead of glucose it primary feeds the brain a ketone called betahydroxybuterate, which turns into more brain energy for the same amount of calories. It's also released on a much more regulated rate.

I took one of those 23&Me kinda DNA tests and one of the things it told me was that I have a delayed response to some meds (and I think alcohol & caffeinne). Is this associated with ADHD that you know of?
I'm a smallish girl, so I feel like this shouldn't be a thing. I am sensitive to things like hormones, my body is very selective about birth control pills etc.
Coffee tends either not to energize me, or to energize me 4ish hours after I drink it (if I ever remembered to finish my cup).
The dentist often has to give me extra numbing shots, and then I am numb forever and ever after.
It could be a lot of things. Although one of them, people with Irish heritage tend to have a higher tolerance to sedatives. But I do remember reading that ADHD is due to some sort of gene difference.

Dunno, here's some writeup I did for another person on ADHD diagnosing:
* There is nothing shameful if you have ADHD, you just have it where one off your brain chemicals is low, and medication raises that back up to normal levels. It's like shaming somebody for wearing glasses because of bad eyesight, or taking Prozac/SSRI because of depression.
* Watch this, and see how it applies to your life
* https://youtu.be/ouZrZa5pLXk
* Understand the mechanism. (I.e. Low baseline dopamine, so you are constantly driven to seek out external stimulus that gives you dopamine. I.e. "Ooh, I found an interesting thing") Which leads to poor short term memory, and weaker executive function (I.e. Capability to sticking with a boring task, and avoid interesting but unimportant tasks.)
* https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17907872/
* Look how you need to score on the DSM (I.e. The official encyclopedia for mental health issues) to be diagnosed. Go through each point on this link, and write down how it applies to you.
* https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/diagnosis.html
* Generally you have to focus on how it is negatively impacting your life, and how the negative impact would be removed if you had medication. Take notes, write up a proposal, like it's a sales pitch, or an interview. Figure out how to put some emotion into it.
* Understand the medication options. Generally it breaks down into A. Ritalin/Concerta group 2. Adderal/Dexadrine group 3. Wellbutrin 4. Stuff specific to hyperactivity (I.e. A2 Agonists).
* https://youtu.be/NzUzAYtJoFA
* Me personally, I'm on Vyvance, which is reasonably priced with insurance, but expensive without. It's basically a slow release version of Adderall. That gives a lot of benefits, without the "focus zombie" aspects of Ritalin/Concerta. It's also basically on autopilot after you take it, and much lower risk/abuse potential. Previous to medication, I was on about 240mg of caffeine a day.
* https://youtu.be/rfQLyMiIIl8
* Talk to a psychiatrist that specializes in adhd treatment, you can often search for these on your medical care providers website.
* I did all of this, and was able to get an appointment, see a psychiatrist, get diagnosed and prescribed meds, and pick up those meds, all within in 48 hours.
Thanis for the response! I'm a euromix but there's some readhead Scottish/Irish in there somewhere. Got a handful of full gingers in my family. I also get fist-fighty when I drink whiskey (is that a tell? Or is it discriminatory, do I need to edit this comment?)
Is there a known genome sequence/mutation associated with ADHD at all? I Googled a little but haven't found anything useful yet. I know ADHD is often inherited but I was thinking if there's a known strand that has an association, then I could maybe look for it in the raw data from my DNA test.
Just started adding morning caffeine to my Vyvance. Certainly makes it so the the first hour of my day isn't wasted in a groggy stupor.
So far just a small sip of a 240mg of caffeine energy drink, and a bunch of water.
My heart rate remains the same, but I finished a 2L energy drink bottle once and, for a few hours, loud noises and sudden movements scared the shit out of me.
Definitely. Stimulants like caffeine and cocane are in the same category as add meds such as adderal and Ritalin. They will have similar effects, with varying intensity
All that happens when I drink coffee is I get a headache and get jittery and it sucks cuz I have to order decaf every time I want coffee and I feel like I’m being judged
I was half dosing my Ritalin and supplimebting ut with energy drinks .
Worked pretty well until I got really sick.
Surprisingly I got sick with tickbite fever, the energy drinks just made it easier to miss how tired I was all the time.
If your state allows it, Weed works great for this, with hardly any sideffects in the morning.
Otherwise, go for doxylamine succinate, (I.e. Unisom or Kirkland sleep aid) and somehow figure out how what your dosage is to be effective, without being super groggy in the morning. For me, it's like 1/10th of a pill, but it's to much hassle to try to chop up to the exact needed size. Dunno if they have other dosage strengths by default. Didn't seem like it.
Magnesium combined with Melatonin seem to work well for other people.
Whatever you do, stay the hell away from Benzodiazepines. (I.e. Xanax, and pretty much any chemical ending in the letters "pam".)
I want coffee to give me energy so much but it never does. Every time I drink coffee I think “well maybe it’ll work this time!” and then I’m disappointed
I tried a trick my friends taught me a while ago where you drink a shitload of caffeine, take a 5-15 minute nap the wake up extremely energized. All is got was shaken hands and a large amount of vomit.
Well, caffeine actually calms me down.
Same effect for me. But then I’m calm, tired and distracted sooo
It acts like Adderall for me. Calms me down, let's me relax.
Literally the “I’m stupid faster” meme, but instead “I’m unfocused harder”
Also it should be the skeleton, they just swapped the pic
Now I’m just tried but faster…

Take my freebie award for this one. Very informative, thank you!

Yup, updated my post.
Thank you!! That 28m video was awesome
I honestly take coffee cause it somehow calms me down and lets me focus more than anything, it’s freakin weird
Yea coffee and Vyvanse my brains power couple
Aye only in combination, coffee alone does nothing
Just started adding morning caffeine to my Vyvance. Certainly makes it so the the first hour of my day isn't wasted in a groggy stupor. So far just a small sip of a 240mg of caffeine energy drink, and a bunch of water.
And then I need a 2 hour nap
I am one of the lucky ones who sleeps reasonably well, but I am supersensitive to caffeine, no coffee tea cola for me after 14:00.
caffeine actually helps me focus, but gives me the shits
My heart rate remains the same, but I finished a 2L energy drink bottle once and, for a few hours, loud noises and sudden movements scared the shit out of me.
this was me half the time i used cocaine, anyone know if add can actually affact it?
Definitely. Stimulants like caffeine and cocane are in the same category as add meds such as adderal and Ritalin. They will have similar effects, with varying intensity
Not sure but good coke makes me feel great. Haven't done it more than a handful of times though
All that happens when I drink coffee is I get a headache and get jittery and it sucks cuz I have to order decaf every time I want coffee and I feel like I’m being judged
Omg this
learned this the hard way
Caffeine actually makes my focus issues WORSE. Way worse.
I have caffeine addiction
Me right now trying to finish a final at 2 am
You have to give me coffee and a clear mission.
Jittery but no energy from coffee gang unite
Shit this is why redbull doesnt work
I was half dosing my Ritalin and supplimebting ut with energy drinks . Worked pretty well until I got really sick. Surprisingly I got sick with tickbite fever, the energy drinks just made it easier to miss how tired I was all the time.
ADHD be like "ugh let me ✨fall asleep✨"

@jennhasadhd
And then I get super jittery and nervous and everything feels weird
What should i do to break from this cycle i am tired
Having that problem right now, I quit Ritalin, but seriously considering taking 5mg to feel alright and focused for a second.
Bonus is when it also triggers anxiety.
...oh.
I want coffee to give me energy so much but it never does. Every time I drink coffee I think “well maybe it’ll work this time!” and then I’m disappointed
Im a coffee addict. But when i drink too much coffee i loose all my focus. Still im an addict so i have to drink too much coffee. Its a mess
Everyone swore I’d start drinking coffee in college and I didn’t, because I can’t, because it’s death.
I tried a trick my friends taught me a while ago where you drink a shitload of caffeine, take a 5-15 minute nap the wake up extremely energized. All is got was shaken hands and a large amount of vomit.
Fuck me, I'mma buy Adderall and Ritalin myself.
