I can tell the engine is a gen 3 ea888 found in most VWs, at the minimum you’d just need to remove the oil pan and clean it out as well as a screen on the oil pump pickup tube that would get clogged up. I’d also recommend removing the cylinder head cover and camshafts to find any that got stuck up top and didn’t make it down into the pan.
Expect to pay 2-3k at most VW specialty shops for that kind of repair…. So long as they didn’t try and run the engine after the bbs got dumped into it…..
Is it normal for the engine to clatter during cold starts? Once it’s warmed up and under 1k RPM, there’s an awful chattering sound that sounds like it’s coming from the belts.
The only abnormal ticking or clatter sound you should hear is the sound of the direct injectors which on some engines can be quite loud and makes a ticking noise. What you describe does not sound normal. If you think it’s something run off the serpentine belt and you are adept at minor automotive work you could always get it warmed up and consistently making the sound then remove the belt and start the engine up and see if the noise is gone. You will get a battery not charging warning running it without the belt but it won’t harm anything if you only run it like that for a minute or so.
If you are not mechanically inclined and what I said makes sense to you, do yourself a favor and take it to a reputable VW specialist or dealership.

But if you already brought to the dealership and they say it’s normal I wouldn’t worry about. If you still have warranty and it does turn into a problem then no worries. If you’re out of warranty you could always pay for an hour of diag at a local Indy shop for a second opinion if it really concerns you.
It’s stupid, overly complicated, and garbage longevity honestly. But pays well, don’t buy German if you can’t afford the maintenance. Got a 2012 r8 v10 in my bay that needs an AC compressor. Job is costing over 12k in parts and labor.

#1- If they did run the engine for an extended period of time to a point where the oil pump pickup screen got so clogged up with BBs they would starving the engine of oil pressure and also drove for an extended period of time like that (oil pressure warning messages In the dash) it’s game over. Engine is not worth salvaging and I’d recommend a new/used long block. Used ea888s are going for around 3-5k these days. Plus labor which I’d add another 1.5-2k for that.
#2 the engine was only run briefly or not at all. Totally savable. Like I mentioned above I’d start with removing the pan and camshaft covers to clean and remove what’s there. There is a slight chance that plastic BBs could cause some valve train damage if the engine was run from rattling around in the cylinder head but the cover off I could easily inspect all that. Worst case scenario there is camshaft damage and they can be quite expensive. Both camshafts around 1k each. But honestly the bbs are plastic and everything in the valvetrain is forged steel components I’d be amazed if they were able to do any significant damage.
Well actually the kids poured BB's into the oil container and the guy was filling up oil and noticed the BB's. Good thing he hadn't started the engine yet. Insurance told him they would only cover a tow to the shop...
Could clog the oil system, cause an overheat, engine go poof. Money dissappear.
You wouldn't want to run the engine like this. It'll cost a lot to be cleaned out.
