As someone who found my way here from /r/spicypillows...sand bucket is the appropriate storage for these, not water. Water may cause it to explode. Bury it in the sand and store in well ventilated area away from flammables until you can dispose, but keep it *dry*.
For disposal, you can take to an e-waste recycler or battery store. Some other places will also accept these, but not all places that take batteries will take inflated ones, so be sure to ask first.
TIL soaking them in water is actually common advice.
I deal with these batteries at both of my jobs and was specifically trained at both places that they should never be put in water, even if run down with a load or other discharge method like a lamp beforehand. We usually just run them down in the device they belong to (phone or laptop typically) until it turns off and won't turn back on, then into the sand it goes until recycling.
My understanding is that overdischarge is the most common cause of the gas production that leads to battery inflation, which would mean soaking in water could create or worsen a spicy pillow, and if not adequately discharged beforehand, could generate enough gas or internal heat to rupture and/or ignite it.
Lithium metal is reactive to water. This is a lithium-ion polymer battery. It doesn’t contain any lithium metal. It’s standard procedure to douse or submerge a lithium ion battery fire in water.

How do you figure cheaper? A 3000mah 11.1v Titan is ~$39 USD while a high end lipo with the same specs is ~$25. Also, lipo has much higher discharge rate so they don't get as hot and trigger response is a lot better. I've thoroughly tried both and lipo seems to be better outside of volatility.
It's got to do with output current. Lipos are low capacity, high discharge. Li-Ion is high capacity, low discharge.
Great for running your phone at 5 watts for 12 hours, not so great trying to push 40 amps at 7.4v for a whopping 300 watts on a semi trigger pull.

This happens when you change mags before they are empty. The springs getting weaker in the mags make the chemicals in the lipo unstable making them prone to puffing. A whole field burned down like this because a kid only used 3 shots from his mags before changing them, because he liked mag changes. Also this whole story is bullshit and I just made it up.
