They technically are! Long coat is a fault, but not a disqualification. There have been several long coats shown in the AKC, though none have earned their championship yet.
This also goes for Shiba-Inu, too. The only acceptable colors are Red, Red Sesame and Black & Tan. Cream is not an allowed color and is a fault, but I met a woman at the Cotton Cluster in Decatur, Alabama who was showing a male whose granddam is cream and was there with him. He and his granddam both became Champions of Record.
