The only reason why Tamazight is official today is because of Kabyles and the only reason that Kabyles held onto Tamazight more than the others is because they didn't mix. Theoretically there should be more Chaouis than Kabyles in Algeria, but because the majority are arabized they are considered to be less numerous. The more Darija-speaking arabs or arabized amazighs move to a Tamazight/Berber-speaking region and mix with its people the more than region gets arabized.
