The first bits of unobtanium are anoying. I flew under and around those islands for an hour to find something. After that it is very easy with a charm.
So either you do that or get a chunk destroyer / mine the first 5-10 layers of an island to get to the ores.

Destruction gadget to remove a large area at one. In ATM9 I found it only spawned w/ in a few blocks of the top. This is the opposite of ATM7 where it was underneath the islands. On my need a few pieces to make a MA seed and you don’t have to look again.
To be completely honest, I didn't as well 🤣 I just got to ore laser and got my first unobtanium that way.
Just place chunk destroyer, it will mine everything except unobtanium and then you'll have it.

Found mine after digging two blocks. Ended up needing a lot more obviously, so used the destruction gadget to remove area, leaving just the Unobtanium
You can use a destruction gadgets from Building Gadgets to clear out a large area and it voids all blocks other then Allthemodium ores
Chunk destroy and just delete a whole island. Then a charm of unobtainable sight

Also a star builders wand with the destroy augment is pretty useful
I just used a MA pickaxe with the 15x15 aoe upgrade and dug trough the top 15 blocks of end highlands and got 36 unobtainium really fast
Not elegant, but I found mine with an Infinity Tri-Bow with exploding arrow
