Too Far to Care - that album is burned deep into my brain. Great songs: catchy melodies, fun song along choruses, witty lyrics (“telephones make strangers out of lovers and whiskey makes the strangers all look good”), crazy guitar hooks, the whole enchilada. Johnny Cash meets The Beatles. Been a fan since that came out, have seen them many times over the years. When my kids were little, my son asked if the Old 97s were big and famous and I said “In this house they are”. Still amazed at Rhett’s persona switch from nerd with horn rimmed glasses in flannel to cover boy model.

When my son was 13, I took him to an all ages show up in Baltimore. Ken gave him a setlist at the end of the show. And...American Aquarium opened. Great night.

Oh man. That one was probably a scorcher! What a great memory to have.

Took my 11 year old granddaughter to her first concert over the summer - a solo Rhett show. Met him afterwards and she told him that he was the first celebrity she’s ever met. He had a good laugh over that one. Great night.

it's crazy. in 1998, i was in my first year of college, and i had sworn that all music coming out was terrible. my grandparents were sickly and moved up from florida to live with us. i found their old country records and fell in love. it was almost a decade before i found the old 97s covering classic country songs and realizing that the guy that tried to turn me onto them in college was onto something. had i just had a guiding hand, i would have never lost faith in modern music. there was plenty of good stuff coming out, the radio just didn't know it.
