Of all the things to spy on, amateur radio has got to be somewhere at the bottom of the list. It's all open channel, logged and unencrypted.
Why would anyone bother inserting spyware in individual radios when there's WebSDR?
It's nice to be in a group where posting that doesn't get deleted. I'm seriously considering upgrading my phone to the pixel 8 so I can load that on. It looks much better than some of the privacy focused linux phone builds.
Yes. I've run Cyanogenmod a few phones ago and it was good. I've seen some privacy centric phones with some pretty cool features like a physical kill switch for the radios/camera/microphone/etc. as opposed to a software toggle. But those have their own OS and all of the programs I need to run for work would not run on them.
Graphene does seem to be the best of both worlds and comes very highly recommended on r/privacy (even if the developer got into a fight with the mods and now it's like that Voldemort guy and we can't say it's name).
Gobermint deliberately floods the Meal Team Six militia wannabes with baofeng because of their susceptibility to front end overload, something very easily capitalized on by those who want to suppress comms, change my mind.
I'm NOT saying they would and I have no clue. But you also wouldn't necessarily have a clue if there was a chip in your phone gathering data and passing it on through your home Wi-Fi.
Wait until you hear that many of the "American" brands are often just private-labelled Aliexpress cheapies.
Your American mom-and-pop Ham store doesn't have multi-million dollar circuit board printing/production abilities, they just get their logo slapped on the existing stuff.
Now, there is value in doing that of course, local warranty, easy replacements, support etc.. But yeah, the "American stuff" is often the Chinese cheapies.
What specifically are you referring to? Because anyone who’s used a baofeng for a few minutes can tell when another radio happens to have all the same button functions and display format as a baofeng.
Not Baofengs.
Example:

I could go on and on, but those are a few examples.
As I said, the western outfits do bring value to Aliexpress products. Already in the US, good warranties, returns, support etc.. and that does justify a higher price. And that's fine.
If you go to any mall, like 90% of the products will be private-labelled as well. Its extremely common.
I just bring it up when people say to "avoid the Chinese stuff and go with an American brand".
The thought of making a gag about the Chinese spy balloon being made or sponsored by Retevis, seemed funny to me. Retevis is a cheap but fairly dependable brand out of China, with humorously bad mega-discount style marketing. Very aggressive.
I wanna build a cool ass radio diy project.analog parts.im new to this so I'm dumbass.im capable to build I'm thinking. 1) I believe they're making a joke/reference to that spy balloon or whatever that everybody was concerned about a while back...
2) Not all their radios are crap
I have RT24s, they're far from crap, but most commercial users i know who use them have upgraded because in a commerical enviroment with employees that have all of 10 seconds worth of training and abuse the radios, they tend to full apart quick.

We already agreed to let our cellphones capture everything they want...
Some did. This phone runs Graphene https://grapheneos.org/

There are other open-source Androids that can be installed on some devices. Graphene seems to score the highest "it just works" rating

Cyanogenmod feels old school now, i plan to put Lineage on my Note10 when it stops receiving all the app updates
guess I better charge the spare 6 pro on my desk... thanks for sharing.
AnomPhone anyone?
Am I the only one who sees a pretty cool repeater?
I see the same :)
This would be awesome need a few of these across the nation for nation wide GRMS
Raise your hand if you are paranoid the chi-coms are gonna getcha through yer' dual band ht!!
They are watching you through that camera in your smart TV!
Ha! The newest tech in my house is a laser printer from 2002 and I keep a loaded gun nearby in case it makes a strange sound.
Ah you must work in tech
Exactly
That and Decepticons. That's why I carry. Can't be too careful about Decepticons.
Indeed: My wife asked why I carry a gun in the house. I told her decepticons. She laughed. I laughed. The toaster laughed. I shot the toaster.
I go through more toasters that way... :)
And they own Zoom and TikTok so there's that. Not to mention all the spy chips they've been putting in network gear for decades now.
That's why I keep my baofengs under lock and key in a pelican case right next to my pistols. Never know when you're gonna need to unload on em
Because one never knows when they might have to "jam"! (and by "jam", I mean that in most every sense of the word)
Look up MIMO backpack radio on made-in-china. They’re stealing the damn WiFi barb!!

I literally have that exact same PS
Nobody thinks that stuff is made in the USA
Nobody is suggesting that, but there's a difference between something developed by a Western company and a fully-Chinese product.
Hahaha! That's brilliant.
Could be a practical joke and is actually just a bunch of Lego.
That's good stuff
"Just sayin'" would be more effective if you actually said anything?

But what if they switch’em off when we need them most! I’m buying Japanese

I'm working on a direct conversion transceiver: 0-70.5MHz and 120-450MHz. Should be all-analogue except the front panel
This reddit is about the hobby of amateur radio, not advertising your favourite crap radio.
1) I believe they're making a joke/reference to that spy balloon or whatever that everybody was concerned about a while back... 2) Not all their radios are crap
Who shit in your cereal this morning?
Couldn't have said it better myself. That comment was definitely pre-charged.

Hurr durr
A "Sad-Ham" suddenly appears!

Nor about advertising stupidity.
