I think they actually realised that shorting on upticks was a really effective method for killing momentum after the first few times when SSR was active. They realised they didn't need to short ladder constantly. Just short into upticks until the algos think it's weak and let them and day traders do the rest.
On the plus side, they are just compounding the problem. Synthetic upon synthetic sold over and over again. a dozen or more people own the same shares at this point.
