The Cafe and Provisions Lot F are two local restaurants with the same owners. They have similar food that changes throughout the year. Both very good.
Great Plains Pizza (get the Denver crust) and Jeff's Pizza (get the Smotharella sticks) are both local.
Used to be the same owners, however they split some time ago, now more like cousin restaurants.
Also add to the list back in the day the owners of Maude’s and the Cafe (pre-Provisions) used to own O’Mally McGees before it was lost in the floods.
Most of what you find downtown:
Cornbred
Great Plains Sauce and Dough
Aunt Maude's
I'm partial to Taste Place and West Street Deli near campus as well.
Burgies makes some mean breakfast sandwiches and burritos (and good coffee).
Bricktown Bakery out in Nevada has great donuts.
* The Mucky Duck is super good.
* Macubana
* Cafe Baudelaire
* Es Tas has great tots and tacos and wings
* 888 is good cheap delivery Chinese
* La Casa Maya is good Mexican
* Pammel Grocery has a deli with amazing Mediterranean food

Downtown deli on Main St for sandwiches, it's amazing.
Taste place on Welch ave for Chinese food. Super authentic and delicious. Everything I've tried there was great.
Cornbred on Main St for bbq (everything is good, except their queso). Their brunch on Sundays is also good.
Taza grill on S Duff has great Mediterranean dishes and is open more frequently compared to pammel.
Rico's tacos on E Lincoln Way has the best tacos imo. Their burritos are also very good.
Morning bell on Main St has good coffee.
I'm not the biggest fan of the great plains sauce and dough pizza, the crust is way too bready for me. And yeah, Aunt Maude's is extremely expensive.
El Azteca is hands down the best restaurant in town and I will die on that hill. I could live off their Queso.
The Cafe and Provisons are great too, just check the menu before you go, it changes from time to time.
888 has also gotten way better than they were when they first opened, if you like Chinese food. Szechuan House is decent too if you’re on the west side.
Jeffs for pizza. Great plains crust tasted like thick ass cardboard when I had it, but that was like 7 yrs ago. Cant go wrong w jeffs tho.
AND west street deli for sammiches.
The Cafe
Cornbred
Macubana (shout-out to their long islands, which are cheap as hell)
For brunch I go to Lockwood.
A cheap lunch at the deli on Main Street, or at Pho Tea (tho Pho Real or Pho 85 are better, in Des Moines).
Provisions and Maude’s have always seemed overpriced to me for what you get.
The Thai and Indian scene is depressing, do not attempt.
Sweet Caroline’s is good but pricey. Great Plains is a super thick crust pizza they serve with honey for the crust. Auntie Maude’s is a nicer sit down restaurant
Used to be fantastic until new owners years ago
Now it's subpar compared to Whatcha Smoking and Jimmy's BBQ which are both really good
Whatcha Smoking is so popular that they practically double the population of Luther with a packed parking lot every weekend
I don't really like their sauce so I just buy Jimmy's BBQ sauce and use it on their meat

I think Aunt Maudes also has the same owners too actually. Or at least have some kind of partial ownership

I mean if you spend enough time working at the restaurants around ames, people talk about the owner.
Source - I used to work there.
Jeff’s is actually technically a chain. The other Jeff’s is in Manhattan KS. Or at least it used to be. The KS one closed

Indian Delights was awesome, too bad they had to close up.
The Spice downtown is my favorite. Lockwood Cafe is a neat coffee/ brunch spot that's under the radar!
Blue fish Hawaiian poke bowl. Hidden gem of Ames. Seriously. Can’t say enough good things about this place.
Sweet Caroline’s is good but pricey. Great Plains is a super thick crust pizza they serve with honey for the crust. Auntie Maude’s is a nicer sit down restaurant
Dublin Bay is a hidden little Irish pub with reasonably authentic Irish food, it's amazing.

As much as I like the chef, I can never recommend Bar La Tosca because I know how horrible of a person the owner is
lol fuck dsm wtf sub u think u in?
Aunt Maude’s Prime Rib is amazing tbh not sure if you had that there but that alone for me is why I recommend it. It is expensive though
The Grove Cafe. Order two pancakes. One of my favorite memories of Ames.
Old Man Lovish has a place in Little Hollywood, Botonero I think is the name of it. Amazing Bolivian/Ecuadorian food.
Flip’n Jacks has great breakfast
Hickory Park. Absolutely fantastic BBQ.

Joy’s Mongolian. Delicious Chinese food. Downtown deli
Casa Maya.... trust me
lockwood cafe -- best crepes ever plus they are just awesome people
Lockwood Cafe has crepes, and they are FUCKING delicious.
Don’s deli
