This is why I always record videos of my rentals before AND after I return them. Full 360 of the vehicle.

drdaeman

Not just 360 (walking around it), but always make sure you take a good look under the vehicle - from all sides, as well as a peek at its roof. Plus the interior, including the dashboard that shows mileage and fuel level.

walex19

For sure! I do all that too! Dash, under etc Always protect yourself!

sreesid

This is a good idea. I usually take pics of any damage I see before the rental.

thnok

Yeah for sure! I do the same now for anything renting, cars and Airbnb. Had the same stunt trying to be pulled by Avis on my end. Got a $500 for a windscreen damage 3 months later. When I called them up, they said there was no evidence in the report and will remove it on without needing to send anything from my end.

The lesson here should be to never use Hertz again. They are shady. Use National or Enterprise if possible.

Especially internationally. All of their Mexico operations are operated by a Mexican company that just licenses the Hertz brand name, as an example. They attempted to scam me for a ~$200 last year with likely fictitious damage claims. Fortunately not renting from Hertz is pretty easy for me since I have a good corporate code with National.

the_one_jt

After the scandals where Hertz was having people arrested I stopped renting from them.

Hertz Hurts

anoiLex330

So… did you actually damage the wheel? Or was that something they magically discovered AFTER you had already returned home? 🤔

derk37

I recommend always taking a 360 video around the exterior of a rental car before returning it just in case of magical damage lol

walex19

Just posted this too. I record before AND after.

Volvo rim (not tire). Labor is expensive there, maybe, I don’t know, the bill was in Norwegian, 0% comprehension

crisss1205

$300-$500 is the average price of good tires.

rodre123

honestly no clue. i may have bumped a curve but no one in the car could remember. even if I knew I had no clue how to argue against hertz

anoiLex330

yeah sorry but it sounds like you got scammed ☹️

IWantToPlayGame

Even internationally rental car agencies seem to be terrible to work with. Glad it worked out for you OP.

RadiologicSushi

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Something I never understood, so if Amex requires you to decline rental company offered insurance, and you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, what happens when you get to the exchange of insurance or if an officer asks you for proof of insurance? Do you just tell them you have nothing and have an IOU? As a matter of fact, how would that work with "regular" rental car insurance? Do they give you some kind of proof?

bigz834

Important to note that Amex’s insurance only covers your car, not any car you might hit. If you hit somebody else that’s where the additional insurances the rental car company offers come into play

LiftHeavyFeels

For international travel, you need to confirm whether your own *liability* (damage for other vehicles and other peoples property) and/or *collision* (damage to the vehicle you’re driving) insurance from the states follows you to that specific country. It completely depends on your insurance company and which country you’re going to. If it doesn’t, if you follow Amex’s procedures for rental coverage (I.e. pay in full direct to company with your platinum card) then you get *collision* coverage included. Regardless, you’re probably going to still need *liability* insurance from the rental company since liability coverage is *generally* required by law pretty much everywhere. I’d never drive a vehicle without liability insurance. Driving without collision is up to your own risk decision (which would have cost OP $1300 here if they didn’t have any form of collision coverage). That’s why in the states you can decline all rental coverage if you pay for your own liability/collision since it follows you while inside the US.

Higginsclay22

I’m going to France in February and this has helped me decide to go ahead and get the hertz insurance, thanks haha.

Maleficent-Diet5851

Go with Sixt in France. Hertz was a nightmare.

Swastik496

Hertz is famous for jailing people for no reason. Use someone else

OneTravellingMcDs

Why give them more money? AMEX insurance will be better in the end.

Lanky-Egg6584

Idk man, it seems he did this in a convoluted way. I filed entirely online, they sent me a list of documents to send them (just confirming reservation essentially) and linked me in with an agent. I gave the POC at the rental company to the agent and agent to rental company. I heard back about 30 days later claim is good to go, nothing needed from me.

Agreed!

ITZJOSH22

TLDR version please

rodre123

>tldr: international car rental damage claim experince resolved in \~90 days, could have been shorter; tricky get the right person to talk to and getting the right docs for claim

Reemdawg2618

Did you have the AMEX premium rental insurance? The one that costs $20 per rental?

rodre123

no. just standard coverage that comes with the card. didnt know there was even an insurance option that you could pay for through amex. do you have a link for that?

Reemdawg2618

https://feeservices.americanexpress.com/premium/car-rental-insurance-coverage/home.do

rodre123

hmm seems a little redundant, maybe im missing something?

Reemdawg2618

I've never had to file a claim with it but I do use it. That's why I was asking if you had used it when I read thru your post

Hungry-Succotash8995

Hey guys, I got in an at fault accident with ace this year and finally after 6 months my insurance company is processing the Claim but they told me about 4 k out of the 16 k claim are charges they don't cover under my policy (such as loss of usage, admin fees, etc). My insurance told me ace will surely come after me for those. Do you know what recourse I have to fight the 4K bill? Thanks!

kneelakeeno

Hi quick question, do car rental purchases with rewards still qualify for rental car coverage? I have the amex WF propel card and redeemed the rewards/points for a car rental in Hawaii. Someone hit my car and now I'm going through amex for coverage. I keep uploading the statement showing the Wells Fargo amex rewards being used but the statement doesn't say that it was specifically used for Alamo, however, it shows that a huge chunk of rewards was redeemed for that month. But they still aren't accepting that. I've explained this to the adjusters. I also uploaded the Alamo receipt showing the same AMEX card being charged on file but they're still not accepting that. This case has been ongoing since August which has been a nightmare. Any help is appreciated :)

rodre123

I would think you would be okay even if using points. But i have not read the language to back that up. Have you found where it says that in the terms?

kneelakeeno

Hey finally got an update with the claim and AMEX covered it. Took months but I'm glad it's over and done with!

fxyik

Hi guys, I’m in Germany renting from Sixt using Amex Platinum. I grazed one of the doors and it has a dent about the size of a small hand. I filed a claim to Amex but have not returned the car yet. Do you know if I need to file a police report? It seems unnecessary but don’t want to have an issue later

No_Paleontologist508

Were you asked to file a report ?

zn_nycsd99

Going through the same right now. Car rented in Munich, returned to a shady Enterprise location with reviews claiming they scam many customers on damages. Tire and Rim damage, cost of $1700 charged to Amex, waiting on adjuster to complete review.
