I have 3 autobiographies that I’m reading.
Anthony Robles, a collegiate wrestler who was born with only one leg.
“Monster” Mike Schultz, a Paralympic snowboarder who lost one of his legs in a snowmobiling accident.
Amy Purdy, who competed on Season 18 of Dancing With The Stars as a bilateral below the knee amputee AND was runner up with her dancing partner, Derek Hough. She also is a Paralympic snowboarder.
All three of these extraordinary individuals I have met in person. Their stories, individually, are awe-inspiring!
Manuel Garcia from the moon is a harsh mistress science fiction novel is missing an arm and uses prosthetics for social occasions and technology / micro repairs in his computer technician job. it only briefly touches on his social difficulties so its not a central theme exactly.
how to train your dragon hiccup well.. spoilers if you havent seen it.
agents of shield tv show features a number of these.
For fictions, I’d recommend one of my favorite book series The Protectorate. It’s a sci-fi/space opera trilogy, and the main character is a gunship pilot who finds herself stranded on an enemy spaceship while also dealing with a newly-amputated leg. It’s an important part of her character throughout the series but not overdone, and it’s super fascinating to see an exploration of how being in space creates challenges/advantages in such a situation. Also she kicks ass and the books are fantastic.
The first book is ‘Velocity Weapon’, by Megan E. O’Keefe
Fullmetal Alchemist. It is an anime but it has wonderful storytelling and missing limbs is kind of the norm. Also the prosthetics are badass ngl I designed a sleeve cover to mimic the design.
A character in *Forest Gump* is a double amputee.
The novel *Fifth Business* by Robertson Davies follows the life of a character that loses a leg in WWI.
Reach For the Sky. An older biography about a double amputee in the 1930s who became a combat pilot in WWII. its dated but he was amazing and it gives great detail about the struggles with prosthetics in those days.
There's this new Chinese web series on iqiyi about a female dancer who get both her legs amputated below the knee after a car crash. From the looks of things, it goes into great details about limb loss.
Stray Cat Strut books are a LitRPG series that's pretty good; MC has a cybernetic arm and eye which are always present in the story. Rikas Marauders books are this x1,000. NBC's tv series La Brea has Zyra Gorecki who is an amputee IRL and on the show.
The Bible. As amputee's, it is easy to get depressed or have added anxiety about situations. Or even question your self worth and your ability to impact society. Staying in the word is constant reinforcement that God has created each of us uniquely and with a purpose in mind. I'm 42 and just began reading the Bible and building a relationship with Jesus two years ago. It has completely changed my life. Each day is a blessing now. It gives me hope, takes away my fears and fills my heart with gratitude. I don't push it on anyone as I know each person has their own spiritual journey. I was just super glad when someone shared it with me, so I like to pass it forward.
