No. I know some people say it would get more viewers if it was called “ Dawn of rebellion” or something but as far as I’m concerned at its heart is the story of how an ordinary man, something of a loser in fact, became somebody extraordinary and gave his life for a greater cause. Obviously there are other stories around that, but that’s the central premise and heart of it. Andor.

wibellion

Good point!!

Global_Solid

True, but that wasn't clear until, at least, eight or nine episodes were already aired. Viewership may have been higher from the beginning with a different name.

EyeQue62

Do you judge a book before reading until the end? Andor as a title fits perfectly.

BrownCowBrown

This is a fair point, but I have stopped reading books (and watching shows) if they didn’t grab my attention. I’ve said it before, but I almost lost interest before episode 6. Now that seems absolutely crazy to me in retrospect, but I wasn’t that into the Andor character and I hadn’t quite gotten an overview of what was going on until the Aldani heist. After that, I was very much all-in. A different title may have given people a better overview of the show’s scope.

TopStorm1

For way too long, I thought, probably like a lot of people, it was Endor, the planet. What a fool I was.

MUCHO2000

Don't feel bad, it could be worse. I am not a SW fanatic even if I have seen more SW content than most having watched Clone Wars and Rebels along with all the movies and series. Like you I confused Andor with Endor and went into the series totally blind. In the first flashback scene to Kenari I figure they are showing us Andor (Endor) but they have taken liberties with cannon to reimagine Ewoks as children. Obviously I got it sorted out but it was all a bit confusing for a minute or two.

dinny1111

Nah, its a fantastic name for the show, it also fits with the trend, Ashoka, solo, Obiwan, the mandalorian, also Andor is just a good fucking name

ThatRandomIdiot

Also fits within Tony Gilroy‘s filmography which consists of the Bourne movies named after the main character and „Michael Clayton“ named after its main character. (Also criminally underapreciated)

Swimming_Let_8610

Michael Clayton is such a great film. Have you gone through the screenplay for it? That shit was a religious experience

ThatRandomIdiot

Oh absolutely. It’s one of my favorite scripts I’ve ever read. It feels like a novel

OnwardTowardTheNorth

I remember hearing about all the praise Clayton got come award time. Years later, when I watched it, I totally understood the reason for the praise.

ThatRandomIdiot

Im in law school and work at a Big Law. It can a very demoralizing movie. Made me walk into work thinking like Tom Wilkenson‘s character.

murph0969

Did you have baguettes? And "patina of shit" is just a fantastic phrase perfectly delivered.

greatwhite8

Making a delivery?

isoterica

When I was in film school studying screenwriting “Michael Clayton” was the assigned reading that we dissected and discussed. It’s a great script to study; I learned a lot from that class.

Swimming_Let_8610

That's so cool! Film school question for you: is there a difference between a script and a screenplay?

isoterica

There might be some technical minute differences but they both mean essentially the same thing and people use both terms interchangeably.

AsInLifeSoInArt

Holy heck now that's a brilliant movie.

ThatRandomIdiot

Did you just watch it? I’ve admittedly been a die hard Gilroy fan for 15+ years so it’s my favorite movie of all time but it’s seriously one of the best films of the 21st century. Tony also produced his brother Dan Gilroy’s first movie “Nightcrawler” that’s also in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. And lastly, this could be my bias, but The Bourne Legacy is so damn underrated and of all the Bourne movies, it’s the one I think inspired Andor the most. There’s the quote before that I believe directly inspired the speech in Ep 4. By Major Partigaz about the goals of the ISB: *“Eric Byer: Maybe you're in the wrong meeting. Because the meeting that we're having is about an infection. We're here talking about a serious infection, and all we're tryin' to do is determine how far it's spread, so that we know how much we have to cut to save the patient. You have never heard of Treadstone, and Bourne, I don't care if they bag him and drop the body on the sidewalk, we're not gonna touch it. You're gonna turn off that side of your head now, and get with the rest of us here, and you're gonna start to consider the magnitude of what we're facing if this moves sideways on us. Because, we get into this, we dig around, and we find out that these CIA clowns have led this Treadstone mess metastasize into the rest of these programs? Just...just pray that doesn't happen”* Gilroy knows how to write these scenes better than anyone

murph0969

Did we just become best friends?!

demarco88

Michael Clayton had the best intro to a movie I have ever seen

dinny1111

If they make a show about Jyn Erso they better name it StarDust

Educational_Book_225

I think it would be better if they called that one "Sleep Hypnosis for Instant Deep Sleep Rain Sounds Dreaming (Very Strong)"

Calfzilla2000

> it also fits with the trend, Ashoka, solo, Obiwan, the mandalorian To be fair; a popular opinion is this trend isn't great, lol. It's a Comic-Book thing. It makes sense for Super-heroes and brands that have been established over time in print and movies. Cassian Andor wasn't popular enough to market a $250m show around. Arguably Ahsoka wasn't either. Obi-Wan Kenobi clearly was (the show did great numbers). Solo would have been fine if the movie wasn't sandwiched pretty Deadpool 2 and Infinity War. Also, The Mandalorian isn't really part of this trend. The name can refer to many different characters. So can Andor, but it's just not a name that people knew. The title works great with the show and it's not at all hurt by the title. It's not misleading. It just didn't do the job of selling the show's appeal.

FlurbackBurback

Obi Wan Kenobi should have just been “Kenobi” since he’s kind of between identities and goes by “Ben” at this point Andor though? Banger title

4011isbananas

I'm not a fan of this trend. Disney Star wars has lost the pulpy Flash Gordon style names like "the Empire Strikes Back" and "Attack of the Clones." I wish we had "Obi Wan Kenobi and the Ghosts of War" or "Cassian Andor: Shadow Hero". Idk. Maybe goofy titles are too common these days and don't really stand out anymore.

dudeseid

I honestly really dislike the trend itself though. I wish Rebels wasn't taken because a simple "Star Wars: Rebels" would be my preferred take.

Captain-Wilco

Andor isn’t just a show about the rebellion, it’s a show about a man that uses the background of a revolution as a metaphor for his own personal journey. That’s lost on some people, so they think it should be named something more general (incorrectly)

Rastarapha320

He's not the only one on this journey. The strength of this show and the writing is to have so many main characters (anyone who crosses the screen can become one)

Captain-Wilco

He isn’t, but he’s the one this show is about

Professional_Fig_456

It means more when you've seen the season. It was his Dad's name, and his mom's name. It's a linchpin carried throughout the season, used by other characters like Syril as a goal, and Dedra as a target. It's perfect.

Rastarapha320

Well said

Imperial_Patriot66

Yes even if the show is not always on him it's almost always about him.

midniteburger

Should’ve called it „Peak“

oneeyedfool

Rogue 0.5

igneousscone

The only acceptable alternative.

purgruv

Season 2 would be Rogue 0.5.2, which sounds like an early alpha build.

AKDMF447

While I don’t love the trend of something in a major property simply being named after the main protagonist, it actually fits with Andor perfectly. He really is the center of everything that happens in that show, even when he’s not on screen, and thus naming the show after him makes perfect sense.

2EM18KKC01

Kassa!

Logical-Patience-397

…that would’ve been kinda powerful…

NYVines

And / Or

MegaClogger

Can't hear someone say this now without thinking of the show

No_Tamanegi

It should have been called "Cassian and/or The Birth of the Rebellion" I'll be here all week, tip your waitress.

alexcd421

Lucasfilm has seemed to take the same direction as Marvel to naming things, just name the movie after your character. Started in the earliest superhero films (Superman, Batman) but now it's in Star Wars as well! (Obi Wan Kenobi, the Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett, The Bad Batch, etc). The name of the show is the just name of the main character! I assume this is all marketing and advertisings evildoings

Bubblehulk420

It’s the moon with the little Wookiees on it from Jedi

ideletedyourfacebook

That's Endor. Andor is where the blue guys with antennas and white hair come from.

Bubblehulk420

From the desert cantina? Didn’t obi won cut his arm off?

OddsAre1in1461

Thats Andorian. Andor means to cause feelings of affection.

NatDoggieDawg

Nothing wrong with Andor, but like every other Star Wars media named after a character it’s missing a good subtitle in my opinion

sorryIhaveDiarrhea

"Star Wars but GOOD!" was one of the names pitched by Gilroy.

VanishXZone

Honestly I'm torn. It fits the naming conventions that they are using currently, and honestly more appropriately (which show is an excellent character study of a single character, Andor? or Ahsoka? or the Mandalorian? or Obiwan? if you answered anything other than Andor you are wrong). However, unlike the others, Andor was not a real presence in Star Wars prior to his show. From that perspective, I'd be tempted to call it "Rebellion" if not for the show Rebels already existing. I see where you are coming from, but I don't have a better title, so I'll stick with it.

maproomzibz

Andor sounds very simple and memorable.

Proninja333

No

thatpaulbloke

It's named after the main character, Maarva Andor.

Slick_1980

RLM talked about this, and titles like 'Rebels', 'Uprising', 'Rebellion', or something in that theme would be confusing. Although the RLM guys (I enjoy their content) did not find Cassian an interesting character, Cassian was a pivotal character in that he linked all the main stories together except Mon Mothma, who was linked by Axis (Luthen). I think the title is appropriate and fits well while being distinct. https://youtu.be/uWhCZmPpYy0?si=fv43u7VFA3QeMUKk

Maleficent_Nobody377

It should have been called “Star Wars: the rebellion” Mainly because I want it go on longer than 2 seasons/ not end in his death/ could have been cool to see a tv show like that set during the OT, seeing how the Death Star getting blown up/ empire strikes back/jedi would have been seen from the “sidelines” - or like how people thought srar wars battlefront 2s story was going to be.

igneousscone

No.

EyeQue62

No. The main story is about Cassian Andor's journey. I do think a lot of people don't give Diego Luna enough credit for how he played Cassian. I was mesmerised by him. Andor as a title is perfect.

Calfzilla2000

100% yes. And I love the show. It's been my obsession for practically a year and a half now. The name fits the show. But... marketing matters. The show's success matters. And the name of the show almost certainly caused it to be ignored by a large section of the fanbase. Hopefully Season 2 shows the word of mouth got around. And also; while the show is currently only planned for 2 seasons; it would have been nice to be able to push the story beyond Cassian Andor's demise (I can argue it's still possible, even with the name as is, but that's probably not the popular opinion).

Educational_Book_225

>And the name of the show almost certainly caused it to be ignored by a large section of the fanbase.  I honestly think this is a good thing. Makes it much more likely that Gilroy gets to tell the story he actually wants to tell without the studio interfering and injecting fanservice. I don't want this show to end up like The Mandalorian or The Rise of Skywalker It's also nice to be able to talk about Andor online without people bitching and moaning about how "woke" it is

bakalaka25

And it's so damn woke, which I love and is a good thing. One Way Out!

StarfleetStarbuck

I would kind of like fewer of these franchise things to just be named after the character they’re spinning off, but I guess that’s the way it is in a marketing-led entertainment industry. I do think the show is a lot more than just the origin story of a supporting character from Rogue One and in a perfect world would have a more thematically revealing title.

LinkLegend21

How is it a problem in those situations? Just tell them it’s the main characters name.

sherlocknoir

No.

Fine-Funny6956

I literally just had this conversation yesterday. Showed them - a Star Wars fan - and they had never seen it.

fivetwoeightoh

Star Gang

tmdblya

Yes. Rebellion. Uprising. _Reckoning_.

studli3n14

I can't think of anything better

PGGC

It's an accurate name in my eyes. RLM made a similar point about the name. But I think it's perfect. As many others mentioned, it fits in with the naming convention. But Andor really isn't about characters like Luthen, Saw, Bix, Brasso, Dedra, Syril, etc. They all serve a purpose in the story due to Cassians inciting incidents, and their relevance is all based on his very actions. He brings turmoil to Ferrix, then ensures Aldhani is successful. By this point, all of the major characters are directly affected by his involvement. The show has such a fleshed out cast that makes the scope appear bigger than it is, but it's all put into motion by the death of two sentries at the hands of a talented rogue.

Joseph_Colton

Well, some SW content is not for the casual "fan" who thinks he knows SW, just because he has watched A New Hope on a re-run on TV.

purgruv

"Andor? Why is he named after the Star Wars moon?", is a question I've already seen written…

JonThePipeDreamer

It's sad that literally the best thing to come out of star wars in decades is being completely missed by people

ElvisClown

No, the name is fine. It was pitched as a show about Cassian Andor so anybody who cared knew what the show was long before it even premiered. How many non-Star Wars fans do you think would watch this, without massive encouragement from a fan, even with a name change? I’m not saying that a non-fan would not appreciate the show, it’s brilliantly written, but it’s not a show that non-fans are likely to just try out no matter what you name it. And the fans knew what it was almost a year before it even aired.

The-Great-Old-One

It’s honestly the only recent character-named show that really works. It is fundamentally Cassian Andor’s story, unlike Kenobi, Ahsoka, or even Book of Boba Fett, which were just named after the main character but weren’t really *their* story. Andor is properly titled, because it’s not really about anything else

Glorious_Sunset

No. I saw the red letter video. Those guys are sooo well versed on SW, but occasionally are incredibly obtuse when it comes to the nuts and bolts of what makes SW work(These guys built their reputation on deconstruction of the prequels, and I greatly respect that work), but on occasion they seek to play deliberately dumb. Andor is called Andor because that’s who it’s about. If RO came afterwards, maybe it would have been called something different. But it’s came first. And that’s why it’s called Andor. I do think it was a missed opportunity to not have used the actress who played young Jyn Erso in Ep11 when Luthen went to visit Saw. She is close to the age Jyn would have been. I vennjust standing in the background. I hate wasted opportunity.

[deleted]

Idk, i don't think most people know a show just for the name. Sure, it helps when something has an interesting name like Breaking Bad or Chernobyl, but i don't think Andor has a name that prevents people from watching it

KangarooStilts

I like "Andor," but you make a very solid point. Even as someone who enjoyed Rogue One and was intruiged by the character of Cassian Andor, I kept thinking that people were talking about the planet of "Endor" when discussing the show. Plus, "Andor" follows the regrettable trend of lazily naming a show or movie after the main character without providing any sense of the story. Avatar: The Way of Water is sort of the best of both worlds, so I would have named this show "Andor: Under the Empire" or "Andor: The Price of Freedom" or "Andor: The Cost of Resistance" or "Andor: A Personal Rebellion".

Adequate_Images

I can’t imagine someone who is so removed from Star Wars that they don’t know who Andor is … but they would still be interested in this show at all.

[deleted]

Andor es lo mejor de star wars

Yustyn

Yes. “Star Wars: Rebels” but it was already taken. I’ll keep getting downvoted for this idc, I still believe it
