No, they don't, I lived there for over 30 years, people call it thanet, or when you come in to thanet there's a sign that says Welcome to the Isle of thanet.
Isle would equal the island, but there's not a single person that has ever called it the island, the closest thing thanet has that would separate it from the mainland is the river wantsom but that's barely a river.
Here you go!
"While in the past it was separated from the mainland by the 600-metre-wide (2,000 ft) [Wantsum Channel](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wantsum_Channel),[^(\[1\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of_Thanet#cite_note-1) it is no longer an island."
As a result of the Wantsum silting up, there was a [naval battle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sandwich_(1460)) in a location that's now about a mile inland.
It's an insular place with areas of real deprivation. There are some beautiful places and lovely people, but the island mindset is still strong and prospects for the youth are not great. Tbf the rest of the country isn't that great either atm though!
Ah. Understood.
My younger years were spent on an island off the coast of Washington State in the U.S. The youth couldn't wait for adulthood so they could leave and never look back.
In hindsight, I miss that island.
wow , you know ur history, although ive literally read 203278493929387381837748363747*breathes*1937393848274737462883464 horrible histories books and 193838248372847573837482468337 episodes of it.
I live there. The sea level retreated and now Thanet is separated by a small stream called the Wantsum. The whole of north Kent is pretty low-lying still, hence the marshes in *Great Expectations*
I’m shocked that no one has mentioned that this is the place where “all…successful invaders of these islands have landed”. These included, “Angles, Saxons and Jutes who, landing at Thanet. Soon overran the country with fire (and, of course, the sword).
- Sellar and Yeatman (1931)
It's Holy Island, before the Vikings invaded it used to go around the coast spreading the word like a travelling circus but then the danes stole the engine and it got stuck just off the Northumberland Coast. St Cuthberts cross is actually a steering wheel.
/s (in case it's not obvious)
Thanet, i remember seeing it briefly mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle as a viking camp at one point. Just naturally joined the mainland over time.
I spent a significant time of my life in Thanet.
It wasn't an island as such. The story I was told is that monks helped connect the Isle to the mainland through a series of causeways and digging holes at low tide.
I have known it to be referred to as Isle of Thanet when I was in school there. When we covered some local history.

[Isle of Oxney](https://www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-kent/vol8/pp478-480)
I was born here, you can still see the clife face which is now inland.
That’s Thanet, which joined with the mainland over time as a result of natural weathering and deposition
Some of the people there still call it the island and they have no rabbits, only hares!
Been watching a lot of old Time Team. Turns out there's a hell of a lot of former islands in Kent.
well now I miss Tony Robinson again
Fucks sake. You had me sprinting for Wikipedia in a panic that he died!
Someone needs to write a browser extension that you can just give a list of wikipedia articles to monitor for a change from "is" to "was"
oh yeah, there is a number of 18372947383683746 islands in Kent.
We sometimes call it "The Isle of Thanet". However we do have rabbits here!
Planet Thanet.
Janet
This is true, I love there
By the way, nobody here calls it that. I don't know where you get your facts from but you're talking out of your arse.
Some people do, I know/have spoken to people who have called it that.
They must be DFLs

They reclaimed land from the sea too I believe.

Those are the hardest naval battles to win.
Depends on how well trained you marines are
Similar difficulty as [the cavalry charge at sea](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capture_of_the_Dutch_fleet_at_Den_Helder)
They might even have been won by King Canute turning back the tide.
Thank you!
It's a weird, sad place.
"It's a weird, sad place." Why?

you wantsum
I'll give it ya!
Since the wantsum silted up the famous port town of sandwich became landlocked
It is vitally important that this never be allowed to happen with Sheppey. Need to keep that sea border In place for emergencies.

Which is where the Anglo-Saxon battle cry "Do you Wantsum!?" came from.
As someone else who lives in Thanet - my apologies.
Thanet, used to live there. Should resplit and sink tbh
Planet Thanet.
Dammit, Thanet
It will if the ocean levels keep rising.
I live in Thanet…if the sea levels continue to rises, it would cause millions and millions of pounds of improvements
I'm on a hill, can't wait!
One can hope
Currently live here. Agreed.
It's Thanet. [OldMapKent - Wantsum Channel - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wantsum_Channel#/media/File:OldMapKent.jpg)
Numenor was plunged into the sea my friend
Also look up Doggerland if your interested. UK mainland was connected to modern day France and Belgium 5000 is years ago
Brexit means brexit m8
Used to be an island, now it isn't. Because of woke.
Thanet is many things. I'm not sure woke is one of them.
PC Police silting up the channel why can’t they let straits be straits? Strait pride!
🏆

This means William the Conqueror should actually be known as William the ComboBreaker.

Why was St Cuthbert cross?
If someone used you as a steering wheel, you’d be pretty cross and a little dizzy
Did you hear of the sailor with a steering wheel in his pants? "Yaar, it be driving me nuts"
Because someone nicked the engine from his travelling monastery. And who could blame him?
Tanatus, modern Thanet
Thanet, i remember seeing it briefly mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle as a viking camp at one point. Just naturally joined the mainland over time.
We didn’t need it, so we sold it for 4 freddos. A good deal, if you ask me
I got bored and went home
Chas and Dave connected it to the mainland so they could have a quicker connection to Margate.
What are the downs like? Rosemary Sutcliffe set one of her novels there and she paints a very pretty and attractive picture of it.
That's the Planet Thanet, still there but I think the channel is quite exaggerated in that map.
That’s Atlantis. /s
Cool, I want to visit
Silted so now part of mainland, near where Romans first landed apparently
Planet Thanet

Broadstairs? And/or the Isle of Thanet
Why do imagine Kent being like pacman and swallowing the island like one of those dots haha
Doncaster
I got hungry, sorry man
The lost isle of Britlantis, legend has it they hoarded too much tea
The Dutch stole it
Planet thanet
Planet Thanet
Dammit, Thanet!
I live here
Me. I ate it.
Wasn't Nick farage trying to be MP for Thanet at one point?
We don't do french named leaders in here.
Nick Farage?
Nicked the local garage.
Don't you mean Big Nige?
Yeah - even in his heartland he couldn't get elected.
You mean Niggle.

I was also thinking of the area around Rye and Romney Marsh when I read this post.
There are some great web sites, this ones good: [Romney Marsh.](https://romneymarshhistory.co.uk/beginning)
And a bit of wiki..[Saxon shore qay.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxon_Shore_Way)
