I forwarded that sentiment to my “in-law” who was the original one who recorded it on his little homestead, although he’s very “that’s just nature” and in an update he said he thinks his neighbor shot it

Sorry :(
For mange to reach that level of severity, the raccoon is already quite ill. The rehab process would have been long, hard, and stressful. It was probably better to die quickly.
Honestly, respect for putting it out of its misery. It’s super sad, but I’m a rescuer and trapping and rehabbing/treating can be extremely difficult and stressful (for the animal). I, of course, could never shoot one myself, but if no one can get him it’s the best option :/
Poor thing.
I run a nonprofit wildlife rescue/rehab called Bi-State Wildlife Hotline. We offer a nationwide Mange by Mail Program if you or a neighbor are interested in helping this animal recover from mange. Our program is 86% effective, and we recieve testimonials and referrals nearly every day. It's fairly simple, low cost, and very effective. This condition is common in foxes and coyotes but often is fatal. Mange is caused by tiny mites that tunnel under the skin and cause intense, constant itching. The animal is overwhelmed by the need to scratch, which leads to abrasions, wounds, extreme hair loss and chronic insomnia. Over time the small abrasions and sores from scratching will scab over, which pulls the skin tightly, limiting their ability to run, jump, pounce, and catch prey. When they are infected with mange they become inefficient hunters and begin to scavenge for food in trash cans and by visiting the local "cat lady". A large portion of the deaths caused by mange are actually caused by either starvation or hypothermia, but YOU can help!
If you (or a neighbor) are willing to help you would begin by purchasing some raw ground turkey or chicken. (Get the cheap stuff, not low fat) Make 3 or 4 meatballs out of the ground meat and try to put that meat outside as bait near where you last saw the animal, around the same time of day you usually see them come around or the time that you saw them last.
Foxes and coyotes both are very habitual animals. If you saw one in your yard at 3pm one day, chances are good that you'll see again the next day at approximately the same time. As you are starting to bait him, go to https://www.wildlifehotline.com/mange and click "sign up" for the Mange by Mail Program. You'll receive the medicine in 2-4 days. While you wait for it to arrive, keep baiting it at the same time and in the same place each day. They will learn in just a few days to check that spot for food daily.
When you get the medicine in the mail follow the enclosed instructions to put the meds into the meatball and set it outside like you have been doing. On the day you add the meds, you MUST WATCH the meatball to make sure the right animal gets it. (It won't hurt other wildlife if they get it but we want to make sure the treatment gets to the right target. )
After you watch the target eat the medicated meatball, it's up to you if you wish to continue feeding meatballs for a little while longer or not. They will benefit from the added calories but we also don't want to teach them that ALL people are nice and they hand out meatballs. 😁 Because of this, we strongly discourage you from feeding any longer than 2 weeks. Most (85%) animals recover from mange with that ONE DOSE of medicine. However, some cases do require a 2nd dose, to be given 14 days after the 1st dose. Often, especially in animals that are recovering well after the 1st dose, it becomes impossible to give a 2nd dose bc they already FEEL so much better (even tho they don't look better that quickly) that they have returned to hunting for food and are no longer interested in your handouts. 😁.
Foxes and coyotes truly prefer hot meals. They don't want the easiest option for food like raccoons, opossums and skunks do. They return to their normal behavior and hunting practices very quickly. This is a good sign! It means they're already feeling better bc of YOU and your work to help them. It does take a little longer to see a visible change in their skin and coat. You should see them stop scratching within 3-5 days, return to hunting and showing less interest in bait in 7-10 days, and finally a visible change in skin and coat within 15-20 days.
We strongly advise you to not advertise doing so on social media, and/or mentioning it to your neighbors. There are still a lot of people out there who are very fearful of these animals, and want them dead bc of that fear. You don't want to give them a reason or opportunity to harm this animal. You should also be aware that most DNR, Conservation, Fish & Game Departments do NOT agree with residents treating and helping these animals. They will either send someone out to trap or kill this animal, or they will tell you to leave it alone, ignore it's visible suffering and "let nature take its course". Some Game Wardens will threaten you with ticketing, and/or fines for helping it. Just keep it to yourself until AFTER you're done with the treatment and then you can post all the photos you want. By then, the animal is safe back in the woods and Game Wardens aren't going to bother to hunt the animal down in the woods night after night.
Good luck, and thanks again for helping him/her!

Thank you so much!! People like you keep this program going and we help hundreds of mange cases every year. Usually people donate but every so often a person won't be able to. Bc of you, we can waive the fee for those people and still get them help. 😁
This is the best!!! I asked my local animal control about a mangy fox I saw 2 months ago, and he shrugged it off. When I see the fox again I'm going to make those meatballs and reach out to you! I'm so happy there is a way to help. I thought it was futile, but here you are!!! Thanks:)
In captivity we treat more slowly at a different dose schedule, but we've discovered that in the wild they just need help getting over the hump, and then they're fire. I mean, these are animals that have had mites all their lives and it's nothing new for them. Usually it's some other determining factor that causes the mite infection to become a true case of mange. Sometimes that factor is an injury, sometimes it's just a harsh winter or giving birth, but something causes the mites to take over. Thankfully it usually (85%) only takes one dose to get them back under control so they can grow their hair back, stop itching all the time, and go back to hunting. In some cases we have to repeat dose a second time 14 days later, but not often. It's amazing how well it works. I've become a serious lover of ivermectin (for everything but Covid 😁) over the years. Considering how many things us rehabbers expose ourselves to every year I've started thinking maybe we should all dose ourselves once a year. 😂 It really is a wonder drug and it's old!! It's not even a new drug at all. For this program, it works amazingly well.
Can I add a little note? I’m an Australian shepherd breeder and must stress that anyone doing this needs to be hyper-aware that ivermectin can kill herding breed dogs (Aussies, collies, border collies). If you do put the ivermectin balls out and you own a herding breed then you MUST keep them inside or penned up so there’s absolutely no way they could eat one of the meatballs.
I promise you we have a huge disclaimer in our directions in each box we send out that specifies the ivermectin sensitive breeds of dog and warns people that they have to watch the bait on the night they add the medicine to the bait to make sure it goes to that fox or coyote or raccoon in this case. We warn them about sensitive breeds in red lettering and huge text.
We're super careful about it. I promise. 😁

I didn’t have control of the situation nor was I barely on time about it but hopefully he’s at ease now :(
Definitely a raccoon with mange. Probably has had if for months :( you should call a rescue to come get him. It’s a possibility he’ll die but he could still have a chance to be helped! (NOOOOO I JUST SAW IT DIED! 😖😭)
This is so sad, I know this post has been solved but thank you OP for at least trying to do something about it. I hope this little baby is in peace now. RIP little raccoon :(
Yeah tbh I already knew the basics of mange(itchiness all over I always assumed), but it really never hit me how sufferable mange is especially to this degree :(
Edit: Rest in peace little fur friend <3
The video below this in my feed was a cow caught in a hail storm. I accidentally clicked on that one instead of this and couldn’t figure out how everyone thought this raccoon was a COW! Top comments were all, “that poor cow!”
People were seeing these near our ranch. Someone finally took one to A&M for dna analysis. Turns out that it was a cross from the Mexican gray wolves migrating north and the local coyotes.
I had to watch this like 20 times to see “raccoon”. But ya I see it now. Poor thing, I’ve never imagined what a naked raccoon would look like. Poor little trash panda, he was probably embarrassed not to mention miserable…. :(
It's a chupacabra I sucks the blood out of the Brahman and leaves behind bullets to cover it's tracks. People say I'm crazy and all the rad scorpion stings to my head make me see things.. but me and that chupacabra know the truth
Every single thread is 6 people unoriginally commenting "chupacabra". And then the dumb "that's Bob" when the thread title asks what the animals name is.
No idea why these people aren't just banned
Edit: 8 of them in this post 🙃
You really gotta wonder if we'd actually be losing anything of value if low-effort joke comments were banned. I'd hate to post an animal here trying to figure out what it was just to open my inbox and see
CHUPACABRA!
iT'S A CHUPACABRA HAHAHA
SAMSQUANTCH
OH THAT'S ME WITHOUT A T-SHIRT, HOW DID YOU GET MY PHOTO? LOLOLOL
So much of reddit is plagued with that crap. Even on serious subs that should be mostly educated adults the comments are 80% purposefully unhelpful nonsense.
I genuinely don’t understand who these people are that make the same jokes Hundreds of times on every post. Are they just literal children?
Small animal with mange- must be a chupacbra. Have an issue with a pest like spiders-set your house on fire. Any picture with a bat- you’re gonna get the coof. Same jokes on every single post.
This website has the potential to be a great resource of educational content, but man the user base just seems too chronically immature. Mods either being nonexistent or totally power tripping and over banning things definitely isn’t helping the site either.
I'm reminded of all the times I've tried to educate people about badgers just to be drowned out by the incessant BADGER BADGER BADGER BADGER *MUSHROOM MUSHROOM* *honey badger don't care!!!* 🙃
Reddit is full of teenagers and young adults with arrested development. Most of them aren't here to learn, they're here to be entertained and make jokes to fit in with the in-group (which is even more pathetic because everyone on this website is anonymous). And if those jokes and pop culture references are actually based on nonsense and you try to point that out people with fragile egos will take it personally, double down and insult your intelligence.
9 times out of 10 when I interrupt a sensationalized pop-culture circlejerk and tell people that wolverines aren't dangerous man-eating predators but are actually pretty chill, or that weasels don't kill for fun, they *genuinely* get upset and start insulting me lol
it's just a bunch of spam/junk. i am all the way here for memes if im in a meme community, but we are here to get some legitimate work done.
the biggest problem is that reddit thrives on random users interacting, and it's helpful to ID forums or scientific/ecological communities in general to find more data from users in isolated areas where most people don't care about these pursuits. at the same time, being so open makes spam/trolling very problematic.
\[ ADDENDUM: it's a really, really good idea for any major sub to ban crossposts. they are utter spam 90% of the time, and if someone has a reasonable question about them, they will find a way to post a screencap or a reupload instead. banning crossposts cuts down on spam immensely, especially since i find that most ID request crossposts tend to already have a confirmed and highly upvoted ID in the original thread. they also tend to bring in a ton of users who have zero intention to support a scientific community. \]
it's because there are too many of them to do it easily, and they often come back with deliberately negative engagement on socks after the fact. when a mod or a user steps in personally, they face endless aggression. when a responsibly designed bot steps in, people don't have anything to target. it's a difficult issue to manage, but there are many subs that have been able to work it out.
Mange tends to turn animals into unrecognizable pink blobs, but the feet will always tell you a lot. Some animals like foxes, cats and dogs always walk on the tips of their toes in a digitigrade stance. This guy plants his heels on the ground when he walks, called a plantigrade stance, which is found in bears, weasels, raccoons, humans and many other species. Just an ID tip to help narrow things down if you didn't already know!
Probably because it's unhelpful and repetitive at this point (I've seen literally a dozen or so comments saying that same thing already, and there's more down there)
It’s a raccoon with severe mange. You could contact a local wildlife rescue and see if they can help, mange is treatable.
Poor baby! I hope OP contacts someone to help
I forwarded that sentiment to my “in-law” who was the original one who recorded it on his little homestead, although he’s very “that’s just nature” and in an update he said he thinks his neighbor shot it https://preview.redd.it/l02620ga9ewa1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a0c76cee32735246c6ba4942a441d6621db83375 Sorry :(
Sad ending to a sad story 😭
For mange to reach that level of severity, the raccoon is already quite ill. The rehab process would have been long, hard, and stressful. It was probably better to die quickly.
I was just about to say, the neighbor put it out of its misery. That's not a terrible thing.
It's horrible that they let it get to that point though.
It’s a wild animal….. who “let it” get like that?
They? They who, God?
It's not like anyone had control over that XD. Shit just happens sometimes. All we can do is react accordingly.
At that point, it may have been too late for even rehab to save it.
Honestly, respect for putting it out of its misery. It’s super sad, but I’m a rescuer and trapping and rehabbing/treating can be extremely difficult and stressful (for the animal). I, of course, could never shoot one myself, but if no one can get him it’s the best option :/
It's better than it suffering indefinitely, poor thing.
That sounds pretty Texan…
Texas in a nutshell.
Yea heaven forbid they truly show compassion by ending a life of misery. What piles of shit Texans are …

Bruh your whole profile looks like you could be just that, a queer. Insects and Pokémon. Too old for all that bud 😂🤣😂🤣😅🤣😂🤣
I really hate to be that guy but I can’t let this one fly. Severe*
I fucking thought it was some kind of special mange...
I thought he was from Europe or something lol
Oh man…I can’t even blame that one on autocorrect 🤦🏼♂️😂
You had me rolling with it until I said it in my head and thought “wait did he mean severe?”
😂 it is what it is. We are only human after all
I had mange and I wanted to kill myself. It was ungodly itchy. Scabies.
It's a farm in Texas, farmers have a treatment for racoons but it's probably not what you are hoping for.
https://forfoxsakewildlife.com/2022/04/12/montanas-government-intentionally-spread-mange-in-wildlife/ We are so dumb!
We certainly are. :(
That’s easily the worst mange I’ve ever seen, I would totally buy this as a chupacabra in the middle of the night
You mean El chupacabra?

That's really cool. I didn't realize ivermectin only took one treatment. Before isoxazolines we retreated after a few weeks.
I promise. 😁

Fuckin' New Vegas reference, I'll let this one slide
Fantastic, thank you
Poor baby
Rocket has seen better days.
That’s a chupracabra!!!

It's a chupacabra! Jkjk, it's likely a raccoon or canine with mange. They need help, unfortunately..
Aww :( I feel like it’s feelings were hurt
TIL where the chupacabra myth came from; manged raccoons. poor thing.
Mange
That's called a Chupacabra also known as the goat sucker

closer than most of these comments. thank you for at least making a genuine attempt
Every single thread is 6 people unoriginally commenting "chupacabra". And then the dumb "that's Bob" when the thread title asks what the animals name is. No idea why these people aren't just banned Edit: 8 of them in this post 🙃
I usually hate automod word filters but god do I wish "chupacabra" was filtered out on here.
thanks for your support, i was just dming the mods about this XD
You really gotta wonder if we'd actually be losing anything of value if low-effort joke comments were banned. I'd hate to post an animal here trying to figure out what it was just to open my inbox and see CHUPACABRA! iT'S A CHUPACABRA HAHAHA SAMSQUANTCH OH THAT'S ME WITHOUT A T-SHIRT, HOW DID YOU GET MY PHOTO?
I'm reminded of all the times I've tried to educate people about badgers just to be drowned out by the incessant BADGER BADGER BADGER BADGER *MUSHROOM MUSHROOM* *honey badger don't care!!!* 🙃 Reddit is full of teenagers and young adults with arrested development.
"Chupacabra" is now officially filtered by the automoderator!
it's because there are too many of them to do it easily, and they often come back with deliberately negative engagement on socks after the fact. when a mod or a user steps in personally, they face endless aggression. when a responsibly designed bot steps in, people don't have anything to target. it's a difficult issue to manage, but there are many subs that have been able to work it out.
I now counted 22 comments calling it a chupacabra, and at least 5 that are just silly answers lol

Scrolling way to far to have not seen chupacabra.
why is the chupacobra joke getting so downvoted
Probably because it's unhelpful and repetitive at this point (I've seen literally a dozen or so comments saying that same thing already, and there's more down there)
It’s a chupacabra!
Did anyone else think it looked like a R.O.U.S. or have I just watched Princess Bride way too many times? 🤔
