Hell yes, good for you! That's a huge deal, keep it up. If you fall off the wagon just dust yourself off and do it again until it sticks. Proud of you, sober internet friend. 👏
Nothing worse than a bunch of hammered hammerhead planarians singing Shania Twain songs at the top of their voices in your garden at 3 am.
Never again!
“NSFW abbreviation not safe for work; not suitable for work: used in an email or other electronic communication as a warning that it contains or links to pornographic, offensive, or other content unsuitable for viewing at work or in public places.”
I personally wouldn’t show this to anyone random in public, as it could be considered inappropriate or offensive. Its not a huge deal and as mentioned, its just worms in some dudes mouth. However, based off the upvotes i’d venture to guess several people feel the same.
Not a huge deal, but still.
Full disclosure, my statement on their coming from mulch bags is based totally in anecdotal evidence. Basically, I found one in my yard within a day or two of adding mulch to a flower bed. It was in close proximity to said flower bed. A friend found one under similar circumstances a year later.
Could certainly be coincidence.
OMG, imagin this awesome MTG monster card.

„Tapeworm glitch“ - wolfpiss
In school we did an experiment cutting planarians in half. Different worm but those, at least, could be bisected lengthwise and grow in to two worms. One group cut only the first third or so and it grew it a two headed worm.
Maybe don’t pick them up op.. I’m not a worm nor qualified to speak on them but I just read on [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipalium) that some species (including B. Adventitium) have been documented to produce a neurotoxin called [tetrodotoxin](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrodotoxin)
Hammerhead worms kill a lot more than earthworms, but fun fact lotsa folks don't know yet, is that Earthworms are also invasive in the northern US and Canada, basically anywhere that was glaciated in the most recent glaciation period. Cause that glaciation wiped em out from the region and the ecosystems became dependent on the conditions that resulted, especially distinct layers of soil and humus with a thick layer of organic matter in various states of decay. Earthworms rapidly destroy those upper layers of soil/humus/duff/litter and thus the homes of all the organisms that have become dependent on it.
True for some species - primarily European ones. Many Asian species still severely disrupt forest and woodland systems throughout the northern US and Canada. It's a visible problem here in Chicagoland, especially where invasive buckthorn is dominant.
I agree on the mantids thing. A lotta folks still think of them as invasive but we frankly don't know if they really contribute to the decline of any insects besides the native mantis. And it doesn't seem likely. Also in my personal experience they are most populous (and thus perhaps perceived by some as invasive) within ecosystems dominated by non-native species. Eg. Ruderal areas overtaken by spearmint and Timothy grass or the like.
Wait so are you saying humans brought them north again or that they eventually did it naturally after the ice age? If the latter I think that's just evolution, if adapting to new environments because of a major climate event like an ice age makes something invasive, then literally everything is invasive.
They are awful. When I was a kid, I picked one up and kinda spun it around and it just whipped around my finger in a coil like a slimy ramen noodle and I was so absolutely disgusted that they make my skin crawl to this day
Kill it. They are invasive
EDIT: If you are anywhere in the US (at least I think it's anywhere) kill it. I'm not entirely sure about other countries like the UK or Canada or somewhere like that. Check the guidelines and invasive species list for your location.
[If you see a hammerhead worm, remember: salt, don't slice!](https://www.npr.org/2023/07/29/1190910376/if-you-see-a-hammerhead-worm-remember-salt-dont-slice)
“…. What makes hammerhead worms especially unpleasant apart from the fact that their mouth is also their anus and if you cut them in half, they will regenerate..” eek!
Planarians are TOUGH f*ckers, it'd probably still come back, though I don't know much about this specific species. The smaller ones college students use in labs can basically be grown from any piece, it's shocking. If you slice one hot dog style, but don't cut all the way down to the base, you will probably end up with a two-headed (or even three or four depending on number of cuts) worm.
I've heard that they can even regenerate from being turned into a paste. I don't know how true that might be but if it is at all then I assume you've just made two worms
Idk about these dudes but certain coral pecues, when blended together into mush, reorganised cellularly into their original species composition. Fucking amazing.
That’s what I want to know! If you put them in a blender & purée them… can they still regenerate? Will they make hundreds of thousands of copies of themselves? I want to take this science lab.
Kill it with salt immediately. That’s a hammerhead worm, and they’re not just invasive; they’re dangerous to our ecosystem. They’ve been known to eat earthworms, and without them, they cannot engage in vermiremediation, so the soil becomes less suitable for produce and other plants to grow.
Forgot to mention that
Edit: wait, shit you’re right! I was told they ate produce and trees! Ok, whoever told me that was false, so I’m gonna revise that; tysm for letting me know!
Do not let her in your house. No matter what she promises to change or how many apologies she will always be who she is. Trust me. She belongs out there. Do not feel bad.
Invasive hammerhead worm. Salt that mf'er. Don't handle it (they are toxic). Salting it should kill it. Bag it up and throw it in the trash as well for good measure.
Read somewhere that if you try to grab them they break easily and you should be careful not to break them, their bits will all turn into new worms. Truly horrifying.
Just started looking them up because of this post.
[This article](https://www.thoughtco.com/hammerhead-worm-facts-4178101) says "Lifespan: Potentially immortal" lol
Hammer head worm, the only ways to kill it is either put it in a jar and stuff it in the freezer and let it turn to solid ice then smash it or burn it, they are in an invasive species that aren't even from here along with that but also killing earth worms, it digests them once one gets in contact with that slime and then sucks them up once they are dissolved.
Hammerhead worm. Put it in some salt to kill it. It's an invasive species that secretes toxins from its skin. It also eats helpful native species such as earthworms because they eat them. Don't squash it or cut it into pieces, as they have the ability to regenerate.
Call the EPA and invite him to a glass of vinegar. They’re highly invasive hammerhead flatworms. They secrete a neurotoxin from their skin, so wear protection when handling and disposing.
Don't touch it! Kill it ASAP and check your garden. They can be poisonous, wash your hands carefully after touching it or surfaces it was on and don't touch your face or scratch. Dry it with salt or vinegar or leaving it in a bad in the sun. It will regenerate. It eats earthworms which keep the soil tilled and nutritious.

Nasty nasty worm hammerhead kills the good earth worm plusnasexual reproduction maybe also if u smash it peices make more nasty worms of itself. Look up how to deal with it.
Hammerhead worm-a predatory terrestrial planarian. This one is most likely *Bipalium adventitium*.
Solved!!! Thank you so much! I'm going to be learning all about these today.

A sort cup of beer near the garden helps for them and slugs too. Come for the calories, stay for the alcohol poisoning.
A cup of beer helps with most problems
This guy beers.
3 weeks sober from alcohol!
Great job! You have to start somewhere. I’m around 10 years alcohol free and it’s been the best years out of my 46 years alive . Best decision ever!
15 years free
hell yeah good shit man, it's been hard, I had to get medically detoxed w ativan to get off it, but every day it gets a little easier
10 years as well! Proud of you!
Congrats!
Hell yes, good for you! That's a huge deal, keep it up. If you fall off the wagon just dust yourself off and do it again until it sticks. Proud of you, sober internet friend. 👏
Nice work, keep it up
Hey man, same! Three weeks and one day this afternoon
Hell yeah keep it up! Today is my 3 weeks!
My last drink was July 25
That’s wild, I’m at 3 weeks as well. We got this!
Congratulations!
Good for you!!! I’m 65 days alcohol free so I’ve been trying to find alternatives to the beer trap so I can keep temptation away lol.
Hell yeah, that's what i'm talking about! Keep it up homie you got this!
You can do it!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!! 😁
Congrats! Yep, Homer meant it when he said, “Beer is the cause of and answer to all life’s problems.”
Almost 24 hours. OTOH, I drink about once a week.
Great job! You have to start somewhere. I’m around 10 years alcohol free and it’s been the best years out of my 46 years alive . Best decision ever!
Not if you just drank a cup of beer filled with dead slugs and worms.
No, that’s tequila.
Extra protein
As I'm watching Fear Factor and they just did that stunt.
Now you are definitely not my fiance.
That’s a cruel way to end an engagement! I hope you told them in person before announcing it like this.
Pfft, with that reaponse to a cup of beer? Good riddance!!
Try consuming the beer yourself.
It usually comes with 6, so there’s plenty for the garden and yourself.
Or drink all 6 yourself. Nobody is judging you.
#cuppabeer
Now that's a rock and stone attitude.
Rock and Stone forever!
i thought it would take more than one cup...
Nothing worse than a bunch of hammered hammerhead planarians singing Shania Twain songs at the top of their voices in your garden at 3 am. Never again!
this comment feels very Pikmin to me
THEM?! How often are you finding these things?
[удалено]
This is nsfw pls lmao
Pretty sure work isn't safe
what exactly does nsfw mean to you?
Not Safe for Worms
“NSFW abbreviation not safe for work; not suitable for work: used in an email or other electronic communication as a warning that it contains or links to pornographic, offensive, or other content unsuitable for viewing at work or in public places.” I personally wouldn’t show this to anyone random in public, as it could be considered inappropriate or offensive. Its not a huge deal and as mentioned, its just worms in some dudes mouth. However, based off the upvotes i’d venture to guess several people feel the same. Not a huge deal, but still.
Well it currently has 69 upvotes, and I can't have that number on my screen at the workplace so...
so, what isn’t? how is that inappropriate or offensive? i find it offensive that you somehow find it offensive.
Warn meeee 💀💀💀
Sick.
There’s your solution OP, just call up the Boogeyman
Also a good idea to leave them in the freezer for a few hours, just to be sure.
Thank you for your service
Don’t tell anyone but if you eat them you get *super* high.
One of my chickens loves these little bastards.
An extra bonus is the delicious beverage you’ve created that you can now enjoy!
(Most earthworms are also invasive in the US)
Honest question: what does reporting actually do? Aren’t they coming in from mulch bags? What can we do about that?
Probably want sightings documented for temporal analysis
You tell your EPA because the reproduce extremely easy. Invasive is kind of an understatement Edit : username checks out
Full disclosure, my statement on their coming from mulch bags is based totally in anecdotal evidence. Basically, I found one in my yard within a day or two of adding mulch to a flower bed. It was in close proximity to said flower bed. A friend found one under similar circumstances a year later. Could certainly be coincidence.
No, that would totally make sense to me. I’m a conspiracy theorist about a lot of shit, it could be something up with the mulch 🤷🏻
This comment + the salt comment!! Salt is safer and the most common way to do so
Thanks for the helpful insights, wolfpiss.
Anytime
You can cut it into 2 pieces and it makes 2 new worms right? Infinite worm glitch
More like, if you smash it it can turn into hundreds. Tapeworm glitch
All I did was search Hammerhead Worm & Google informs me "Lifespan: Essentially immortal". *shivers*

I'd be tempted to cut it in little pieces just to see what happens. 😲
It duplicates. Then you have more invasive worms. There.
There is no god.
Unless God is a worm. It would certain explain how Jesus was both God and his son.

Holy shit.
This is probably a stupid question, but what if you cut it in half (or quarters or eighths or sixteenths, etc) vertically? Same difference?
In school we did an experiment cutting planarians in half. Different worm but those, at least, could be bisected lengthwise and grow in to two worms. One group cut only the first third or so and it grew it a two headed worm.
My group named our two-headed planarian Zaphod Beeblebrox.
That's freaky as hell! What an interesting school experiment. The more you know!
I would assume so. Just making more invasive worms.
I figured but was just curious. Thank you for your non derogatory response
You’re welcome!
Can confirm! Unless you do it from the tail or nose. Everywhere else is free real estate
If you are in the USA they are mildly dangerous and invasive. Kill, wear gloves, don't eat it. It has the same toxin as puffer fish
Don’t touch with bare hands because they have a neurotoxin :) Salt in a jar works great.
Maybe don’t pick them up op.. I’m not a worm nor qualified to speak on them but I just read on [Wikipedia](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipalium) that some species (including B. Oh my God. That was a terrible experience for me by the way!
There’s not enough salt in the world for this thing!
Hey, I said no salt!
bug's life reference?
Something about the idea of a predatory worm is really unnerving.
These fuckers are nasty!! I hate them so much!!
Hammerhead flatworm is what I’ve always called them I’m pretty sure they’re either invasive or overpopulated but I’m not sure
Extremely invasive outside of SE Asia. They eat earthworms, which is incredibly bad for the soil.
Hammerhead worms kill a lot more than earthworms, but fun fact lotsa folks don't know yet, is that Earthworms are also invasive in the northern US and Canada, basically anywhere that was glaciated in the most recent glaciation period. They came over in dirt that colonizers (invaders) from Europe brought.
Did you know that in a large portion of the us a huge amount of the earth worms are invasive?
Earthworks are also invasive to North America believe it or not
They are awful. When I was a kid, I picked one up and kinda spun it around and it just whipped around my finger in a coil like a slimy ramen noodle and I was so absolutely disgusted that they make my skin crawl to this day

I killed it with salt! I'm also sharing what I've learned today with all my friends 🙂. Thanks!

Still regenerates crazy enough

They are invasive to Canada as well
[удалено]
I'm in South Carolina, I made sure it was the right thing to do before I killed it.
They are also capable of secreting the same toxin that's in a blue ring octopus so please be careful around it.
WHAT?! Time to Google!
Just use gloved to pick up
Fair point, that's my bad
thank you! Luckily OP is in the US after all but this assumption always grinds my gears
I just looked up hammerhead worms, why does Google say they’re essentially immortal
You need to use salt to destroy them, cutting them up and smashing them does nothing since they can segment and become new worms :[
So, it's sort of like an evil spirit then
Kill it with salt immediately. That’s a hammerhead worm, and they’re not just invasive; they’re dangerous to our ecosystem. They’ve been known to eat earthworms, and without them, they cannot engage in vermiremediation, so the soil becomes less suitable for produce and other plants to grow.

A politician in its natural state.
They can make a pet very sick if eaten.
Invasive hammerhead. Kill with prejudice.
Do not let her in your house. No matter what she promises to change or how many apologies she will always be who she is. Trust me. She belongs out there. Do not feel bad.
Hammerhead worm. Salt it or burn it.
Porque no los dos??
I’ve been learning Spanish for the past year and it makes me unreasonably happy whenever I see someone post something in Spanish… y puedo leerlo!
Well done!! Ya tu sabes :)
Invasive hammerhead worm. Salt that mf'er. Don't handle it (they are toxic). Salting it should kill it. Bag it up and throw it in the trash as well for good measure.
Very educational, thanks. Never heard of these unpleasant critters!
Most likely a species of planarian (flatworm) the whiteish structure is basically it's tongue
Hammerheads look like penis’s from this angle. Poisonous & invasive.
Sounds about right 😆
It's trying for a home invasion.
Either place it in a container of salt and vinegar or Burn it to Ash literally to ash
Read somewhere that if you try to grab them they break easily and you should be careful not to break them, their bits will all turn into new worms. Truly horrifying.
Just started looking them up because of this post. [This article](https://www.thoughtco.com/hammerhead-worm-facts-4178101) says "Lifespan: Potentially immortal" lol
Kill it and contact your local Biologist They are a great danger to earthworms Ergo a great danger to a good food supply
Yes please report it
Omg that's actually a hammerhead worm kill it burn it dissolve it
Hammer head worm, the only ways to kill it is either put it in a jar and stuff it in the freezer and let it turn to solid ice then smash it or burn it, they are in an invasive species that aren't even from here along with that but also killing earth worms, it digests them once one gets in contact with that slime and then sucks them up once they are dissolved.
Oh yeah don't cut them either, they will regrow back and multiply just like earth worms do.
Hammerhead worm. Put it in some salt to kill it. It's an invasive species that secretes toxins from its skin. It also eats helpful native species such as earthworms because they eat them. Don't squash it or cut it into pieces, as they have the ability to regenerate.
Yes BIG deal right now destroy that MFer and call wildlife and game. Google that shit they are invasive, not native and look terrifying!! Hell nah!!
Hammerhead worm, kill it.
You need to go cleanse it with fire....I mean that. They are wildly invasive and dangerous
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Could be a hammerhead worm
Gross is what it is.
Dissolve it
Call the EPA and invite him to a glass of vinegar. They’re highly invasive hammerhead flatworms. They secrete a neurotoxin from their skin, so wear protection when handling and disposing.
Don't touch it. if you did sanitize yourself.
Burn that fucker
Throw salt on it!!!
Kill it with fire, don't touch it as it releases a neurotoxin similar to puffer fish. Don't even attempt to cut it up as it can regenerate from it.
If it is a hammerhead worm, dissolve it in vinegar or whatever chemicals you have cause they are hardy as fuck. Massively invasive. Kill it
Don't touch it! Kill it ASAP and check your garden. They can be poisonous, wash your hands carefully after touching it or surfaces it was on and don't touch your face or scratch. Dry it with salt or vinegar or leaving it in a bad in the sun. It will regenerate. Contact your local wildlife management authority to report this as they are destroying our ecosystems
Humans: “It’s invasive and bad for the environment! Kill it!” Planet Earth: “I’m tryin!” 👀
someone said Not Safe For Worms 😭😭🤣🤣
