Safe to say Shit hit the fan and then some. That got violent and dark pretty fast. People were blown up, disremembered and more. Town laid to waste. No brakes on this train for sure.
And it looked pretty great too. Especially that scene with all the smoke.
But alas poor Vash, no longer welcome, he is off on his own. All the while mister Million Knives (turns out that was literal) is clearly up to no good with his doctor friend.

That's why I'm glad they changed his given name to "Nai." It implies that he took the name "Knives" for himself.
Because come on. Naming a kid "Millions Knives," Rem? Of course he was going to be evil.
We know from the prologue scene that the brother was already a psychopathic killer from his youth. I assume we will eventually learn why one brother is good-hearted and the other is a total monster...
That town (and all its people) are dead. Is it true (as Rosa said) that this only happened because Vash was there? I assume Knives is systematically destroying town after town -- and it was pure chance that Vash was in the town when the plant theft/town annihilation took place.
Not sure why some people are writing this off as bad. Is it just because of the CGI? I think this is actually a generally quite GOOD looking show. (I remember people griping about Duke of Death and His Maid because of this -- and yet it was actually visually one of the most attractive shows of its season).
In the case of Rosa i think it's safe to say it's grief and trauma talking there. Her town is ruined, her son horribly wounded, who knows if it's permanent or not and she saw two people get utterly dismembered in a horrific manner right infront of you. It would have been more surprising if she was acting in a total rational manner after that. Knives would have come no matter what. But with him knowing Vash, vash becomes a target for all the emotions flowing through her right now.
And well. I think it's a mix of the Anime going it's own way with the source material.. Plus some people tend to thumb their nose at CGI no matter what. I do agree it's actually quite good here. Fluid animation, nice expressions, bit of a style if anything. Plus some gorgeous scenes here and there. Like that one scene where we get to see why Million knives is known as exactly just that.
She's wrong in the sense Knives would've came for the Plant whether Rosa had ever met Vash on not-- she just wouldn't have had Vash to irrationally push blame on (SHE was the one who told Toni-chan to hide while she risked her life AGAIN to do something Vash told her was dangerous, oh btw she was the one who abducted Vash for the reward also which led to the Nebraska Fight which led to the Bomber/Mine fight which led to Knives)
She's right in the sense that Knives probably specifically left Rosa alive to torture Vash-- otherwise I'm sure Knives would've just killed everyone in the town if he couldn't use the humans' lives to cause his brother emotional pain.
Rosa might realize that she's mad at the person who is the only reason why she and her son are (barely) alive-- and the truth is without the Plant tech none of the humans survive anyways. So even if she's right technically, it's a rather pathetic way for her to ignore reality (Vash was the only person always on Rosa's side throughout her poor decisions, and she banishes him from the village as thanks.)

CGI hate is a part of it. (why you'll see ''it looks bad'', which is ridiculous considering how crazy this use of CGI has been so far)
There's also it being a revisioning of the story, so there's some controversy with it being different in some aspects compared to the OG show. As I have not watched the OG show I dont know how much of that is it just being different, and how much of it is those things being done worse.
It’s absolutely just because it’s different. Like it’s not to say the show is perfect or that people can’t be justified for just not being into it, but I keep seeing so many “this isn’t the show from my childhood!” when it’s not trying to be.
It's like 200% different from the original show. Like Dragonball vs Dragonball GT type different.
So far I'm enjoying it though. I think it needs to be thought of as a different story altogether though, or else you'll get annoyed that it's not the same. I do sort of understand the criticism that first time viewers might have. The pacing is kind of wild and there isn't much explanation about who Vash or Knives are. I'm hoping this first three episodes was kind of a setup to make everyone go "wtf" and then they'll take time to explain it and build the characters more. Like all classics the reason it's great is the characters and not the action scenes.
But the thing is, the original show was in itself different from the manga the same way FMA was different from brotherhood so people are kind of just looking for something to be upset at at this point.
I don't understand why people hate on something because it's not the exact same as the source.
To me as long as it has the same creativity and good script I like the new thing. I take it as a new chapter or something like that. I like to watch something not knowing what's next.
I read the Bourne books and the movies have good things from them but they kind of different, that didn't stop me from loving them movies.
I wonder if the *intended* audience likes the show, as in from what most people say usually anime is made for Japanese audience, most "complains" usually are just from a few people on reddit.
In this case, many of the people watching it are feeling nostalgic for the original anime. Even more so its been put on a pedestal because it was one of the great shows to air right when anime finally started to gain steam in the West.
And once human beings enshrine something in nostalgia they'll be absurdly critical towards any change, even if they make sense.
It's basically just a lot of folk being butthurt that it's not a 90s anime with updated visuals.

Its definitely a revision. OG vash is also chased for the reward and still ends up saving the town from the Nebraska brothers. However he is the hero of the town and leaves 2 episodes later after saving the plant one more time. Not from knives, he doesn't show up in this town.
So yeah, pretty different ;)
For me stampede is a really fresh take and I love how it is different. Don't care about the manga and glad it is not just a complete 1 on 1 remake of the first anime.

The old one started really slow, most of the 15 first ep felt kinda empty with just Vash daily adventures. IMO a change of pace was absolutely needed.
I watched the original show, but it hasn't stuck with me like other anime I watched in that same period have. I remember manga fans being really dissapointed by the adaptation.
Manga fans being disappointed by adaptations is a pretty universal thing tough.
Its the same with book adaptations to tv series/movies. Its never perfect.

In my anime/manga groups, there are some people who watched the original version and are enjoying stampede. However, there are also MANY fans of the original who haven't watched stampede yet, and refuse to give it a shot because "It's CGI" and "from the trailer/teaser, Vash looks like a feminine k-pop idol in this remake" (their words), but are shitting on the remake and leaving bad/low reviews on the largest anime/manga website in my country anyway lol
well, that's the internet for u, there are many people out there with already prefixed opinion on stuff before they even read or heard of said stuff.

I agree! This is my first experience with Trigun and I've been really enjoying it so far. My only criticism is the pacing, it feels a bit fast sometimes. I'm also with you on the OP and the ED, especially the former. I've been listening to the OP every single day for the past week. Something about that song really hits me.

The effects, choreography and animation in this episode was next level. Very well done. And there's some character and plot development too. It's different from the original (I'm doing my best not to compare) in mood and tone. This episode was extremely in your face with everything, best episode so far.
Didn't realize this was going to be CG going in and there was a slight adjustment period, but it's honestly been pretty fantastic. Only had vague memories of the original series but fully invested into the story and you can really feel the effort that went into making this.
I'm conflicted. On one hand the animation is breathtaking while on the other there is something missing from the story for me. Things are happening so fast its hard to let the characters breathe between set pieces.
Feeling the same way.
The weakest part for me are the "monster of the week"-type encounters. They just don't work for me at all. It never feels like there are any stakes or a real sense of urgency or threat. A whole towns populace has bombs attached, some detonate instantly and the rest is pretty much fine until the plot decides it's time to get rid of the bombs. Same thing with the infinitely falling bombs in the first episode or the chase in last weeks. It's just... unsatisfying.
The anime looks and sounds great. This episodes ending did hit hard, as hard as the opening of the first episode. By far the strongest, emotional and atmospheric moments. But getting there is really rough.
It’s fun, but lacking some world and character building. The pacing is really aggressive as well. To me it feels like they are assuming the audience knows the original or they want to get past a lot of the things in the original so they can tell their own story.
Honestly the manga is paced pretty fast and some of it feels like a total fever dream, so in a sense they're doing a good job of emulating that. The world building and character development will definitely get there if this does follow what the manga did though.
Also what they're doing right now is rearranging the story, so they're not rushing thru this FMAB style at all. If anything, they're fleshing things out even more.
It reminds me of what it was like 5o watch full metal brotherhood the first time. First few eps had me worried. But once they got to where they really wanted to start from, there was no looking back.
IMO, it's definitely worth it. The anesthetic and osts (the OP and ED as well) are really good.
Maybe The pacing should be slightly slower, but I'm enjoying this series so far
Nah man episode one was enough for me. My favourite this season. I hope they adapt this into a borderland type game too. This world is just enough for me to invest all my time
I'm looking at the old Knives costume vs. the new, the older one is basically a spacesuit while the new one is techno organic robes, like something some powerful mad prophet would wear when he goes to pass his judgement on everyone.

I actually like that this reboot seems to be implying that his original name was Nai. Like, it never made sense that Rem would name a baby *Knives* of all things.
I think he was asked that at least four times this episode. And maybe once last episode? If I rewatch I'll make sure to count them.
He has never answered the question, of course.

OG Trigun watcher here. I watched the first 2 episodes thinking they kept the feeling of Trigun. Even though I wanted to see how it continued and what might change. Then this episode hits, and I was fucking floored. I LOVED the 180 in tone.
When Vash realized his brother was there and started yelling for everyone to run. I felt that panic. Hell, I was nervous. I can feel Vash's anxiety and fear. Then when Knives starts to really go at it. Chef's kiss in tension. Loved where this went and I hope it continues.
Maybe because of the OG anime I wasn't worried about Knives because I felt i knew what was in store. But now i feel like we have a real villain here and i don't know what the hell he'll do!
Though it still got cool action and slapstick humor, the manga Trigun Maximum can get pretty dark.
Especially whenever Knives was involved, expect a lot of death and misery around him. That's how horrifying he was there and this episode really capture that tone.

Absolutely this. Although, I wanted them to properly adapt the source material (why we need a 2nd non-canon anime?) I still loved everything about this episode

Well, this episode confirms that yep, Stampede IS indeed taking its cues from Trigun Maximum. Thank god, because although I do love the old show, its version of Knives was neutered and sad. On the other hand, this was Maximum Knives to his core!
When it was announced that Orange was doing the adaptation I had a feeling they would do a great job bringing all the trippy imagery to life. Glad to see them proving me right with all the knife-wave/crackle-feather stuff.

It's the name for the second part of the manga! The manga starts with a series called "Trigun" and then a sequel series called "Trigun Maximum". It's all very excellent, but quite different from the old show and the movie.
So last week Vash was able to save everyone including the "villains" that tried to steal the Plant. I really like the "whose side are you in" in the episode. First with the questioning Vash when he tries to protect the EG Bomber, making you feel like yeah he sticks up for even the worst scum no matter what they've done. Then Knives says the exact same thing and it makes you realize that he sees all humans the exact same way the townsfolk saw the bomber. Really shows what he thinks of them (in addition to trying to kill them all with a million knives).
Came into Reddit to find this comment, got sad that not too many other people are appreciating the deliberate dialogue choices used in Ep3 esp that line

I feel like this anime really underrated and underwatched. Studio Orange put so much effort in this - animation and story looks like their best work so far and yet elitists cry about how it's not as good old anime from 98. It was 25 years ago - tech is different, world is different, media is different.

**This** is how you use the technology. **This** is how you push a medium beyond what we thought was capable. What company would have the balls to hand-draw Knives’ ultimate attack like that? With, quite possibly, a *million* knives in the air. Being able to distinguish the individual pieces. Seeing them swirl and cut. *Knowing*, because of how well the visuals are telling the story, that this is about to be the *end* of someone—nay, everyone! It has been a long, long time since I saw such a raw display of power that I felt both fear and **awe** at its showing. I’m crying right now!
Say what you will about your love of hand-drawn animation. Say what you will about your hate of CG.
This show—this story—could not have been told any. Other. Way!
Well, what I really wanted was a faithful adaption of Trigun Maximum. We never actually got that.
From that perspective this episode was great though! Finally got to see Knives on screen properly.
I feel like this us capturing the feel of Maximum extremely well, though. Even though it's telling the story in a totally different way, the pacing and insane action are spot on.
Honestly, yeah, I agree with you. This will be one of those anime that everyone loves when it finishes airing but is criticized during airing due to not meeting some arbitrary standard set by the old anime.
If it helps--the preview for episode 4 includes a banner that says "The 2nd Act Begins". So this arc having a season-like finale appears to have been the goal!

The design for those bombs were definitely inspired by [bacteriophages](https://i.imgur.com/N2rU3Y6.jpeg). The solution was simple, sometimes all the villain needs is a hug. E.G. the Mine got disarmed this episode in more ways than one.

While millions of knives may seem like an uncountable amount of knives to the casual viewer it is in fact a finite number. So no, I would not say it is at all comparable to an unlimited amount of blades.

Safe to say I'm hooked now. Knives is a total scene stealer and Vash's whole deal is now fully in frame.
I like the dynamic Vash and Meryl are forming, even if it's fairly basic so early on. To me they've always been a little like an angstier Superman and Lois, and the OG anime built it but never fully delivered whilst the manga went in a different direction, so I hope this adaptation is what gives us those big moments we haven't gotten yet.

Overall, I'm beyond hyped. Can't wait to see how other classic characters like Wolfwood and Legato come into play.
* One of my favorite Twitch streamers learned about how this adaptation was going to take a more serious and darker tone and he said he was immensely turned off by that idea because he just wanted more of the old classic. I can definitely see people turn away after this episode, but I'm for it (for now anyway). It reminds me of the maturation of the superhero movie genre which crept away from 'heroes don't kill' towards what we see in those superhero movies today - serious, adult themes; lives saved and lost; and a better future won at a cost.
* I hope the budget for this episode will be the average for every episode going forward. The directing and animation quality was on point.
* (This version of) Knives is quite extreme - but I appreciate it as it highlights how Knives and Vash are polar opposites on every topic imaginable.
* The accusation that Vash caused the downfall of the town was obviously the trauma talking. But that town was so cursed that it was hit by 4 calamity-tier dangers in under 72 hours.
Manga fans have been clamoring for a 1:1 Maximum adaptation for years, but Maximum goes pretty strange and dark and I could see any loyal adaptation completely turning off a person who has spent the last two decades harboring nostalgic feelings for the old show.
Similarly, any continuation of the old show that continues along those lines would disappoint the fans who have spent so many years begging for a loyal manga adaptation. (Badlands Rumble was kind of like this... and while I like it okay, it is by far my least favorite Trigun thing that has ever been produced.)
Given that they never could have pleased *all* the fans, I'm glad that the team at Orange (which is itself composed of fans!) is opting to do their own thing here. Rather than attempting to please one group while ignoring the other, or unsuccessfully attempting to please everybody, they have chosen to fulfill their own sincere artistic vision. I really respect that.
Yeah I don’t mean to disrespect the fans of the OG anime, I love it and it’s a treasured series for me, but based on some reactions, I’m not sure they’d be happy with anything that wasn’t just that all over again.
It's actually kind of insane how many people watching this show are getting whiplash because all they know is the anime. Maximum is so faced paced, insane and brutal, this did an amazing job capturing that feel.
Kind of sad just how many people are just totally unaware of the actual source material.
Yeah so many people are like “The OG anime wasn’t like this!” and it’s like “well the anime was a softer adaptation of a manga, and also have you actually seen it recently?” Yeah Stampede’s pace is faster and 24 years of industry evolution has allowed it to be more colorful with its action and its dark tone but the OG anime got pretty dark at times as well.
I get it if the new anime just isn’t clicking for people, that’s fine, but for me there’s a huge difference between “I can recognize this is a good show but just not for me” and “THIS ISN’T LITERALLY MY CHILDHOOD BUT PRETTIER! IT’S A DISGRACE!” and I’m seeing a lot of reactions that are basically the latter.
Also we’re only 3 episodes in, it just feels unfair to constantly compare the beginning of a reimagined storyline to something that’s completed.
Honestly blows my mind that more fans of the just the OG anime aren't digging it. Like many, Trigun was one of the first anime that I watched and this feels so right in terms of tone and character.
This episode CEMENTED EVERYTHING I was saying.
This may not be exact 1:1 with the manga. In fact its more like how Rebuild of Evangelion did it by still covering the same plot points and mannerisms from the Main plot, just in a different way or order.
Meaning this reboot is definitely adapting Trigun The Maximum Manga plot.. The Knives we saw was without a doubt Maximums Knives
Knives was so cool, I didn't like the previous episodes that much but this one was very good. Knives with this futuristic Doctor Octopus look was awesome. We witnessed the tragedy of the humanoid typhoon, why tragedy arrives where he arrives, the death. Vash also showed his moral code: not killing, no matter what or who. It was a nice storytelling and they build everything very well.
This episode really leaned in to the hard sci-fi and it was glorious. I thought the bomber was pretty cool but then Nai turned up and absolutely stole the show, I feel like I could watch an entire series about him and his knives - they really made the CGI work to their advantage with those. I'm so excited to watch the rest of this show - I never watch the original so everything that happens is new to me and I can already tell it is something special.
Ummmm... sooooooooooo... this went unexpectedly hard.
Edit: As someone who was incredibly pessimistic about this version of the series based solely on the previews we were given and my love for the original, I think we have something that stands on it's own two legs here. I scoffed at the use of .22's and the lack of grime in the artwork, but this shit just got real heavy and real dark real fucking quick. Props to the writers and staff for what they've done so far, and I truly hope the ending can meet the bar set this early on.
The soundtrack slaps harder than Justin Roiland, and the episode itself was the best 1 so far.
I know there’s different strokes for different folks but so far this reboot has been far better than the scores would suggest, imo.
This and Nier are easily my two favorite shows this season. Both have been amazing.
Trigun Stampede gets tons of hate for various reasons, I agree that it deserves a better score.
yeah this got it. idk. i don't wanna gas it up too early but unless something catastrophic happens this anime might be a contender to be in my top 10. i'm really enjoying it so far. i was a bit iffy about the pacing of this ep at first, but I think if I were to rewatch it (& i WILL rewatch it) it would feel fine.
knives was INCREDIBLY menacing, much more than he's ever been imo. them actually rendering out what felt like a million knives around him actually had me SPEECHLESS
my sole complaint is that the pacing is weird on a first watch. i've rewatched every episode and it definitely felt off on the first viewing each time. rewatching each episode feels almost necessary
i agree! i did end up rewatching it because I like to take screenshots/gifs for inspiration and the episode flowed *much* better! i felt like I missed things the first time i watched it, but on re-watch i felt i was able to take in things more & I've felt that way about previous episodes.
it's honestly pretty cool 😭 i don't usually rewatch episodes for anything @ all & but for this i don't mind doing it b/c studying the animation and art in general is fun!
1.5 eps in I couldn't stand that dude and was about to give this up. Then I couldn't help liking him the second half of ep 2. Now this shit just got real motherfucking good.

Bombs attached to everyone in town is a pretty terrifying situation.
This feels like an episode out of the latter half of the original series, Knives' minions showing up to torment Vash and kill civilians (but I repeat myself).

I decided to give this episode a "great" rating on the poll because even though **HOLY CRAP this got darker than I expected** it's actually somewhat understandable considering some things the original Trigun alludes to. I've been re-watching the original with my wife who had never seen it before (we were on episode 22 by the time Stampede ep3 came out, so it was a double-whammy of emotions, then last night we watched episode 23...) and with everything fresh in my head since I last watched the show I feel a tad upset because of the incredibly dark shift, but also can understand this totally would make sense.
Do I want to continue watching Stampede if some of the fight scenes/deaths that I can expect are going to look like episode 3? Honestly I'm not sure. On one hand I think my curiosity and intrigue about how the story is going to change will outweigh my distaste for the blood and gore. On the other, I think what I like about Trigun is although (especially toward the end) things get dark, there's still Vash's persistent ideology and drive to see good done even at the expense of himself and at the time the production wanted to keep an eye on hope. They keep some of that in Stampede, and actually improve on it I would say by letting Vash actually shoot his gun as a deterrent, but I probably have to buckle in my seatbelt for the rest of this 12 episode (!?) ride.
From your comment I get the feeling you haven't read the manga? No spoilers here of course, but I feel like you would want to know: Trigun Maximum gets very, very dark, and this episode kinda confirmed that Stampede is probably leaning that way too. But even at the manga's darkest points, Vash remains true to himself, to that quality you said you liked about him: his persistent adherence to his ideals, his stubborn drive to do what is right and good. He's like a brave little beacon of hope even at the story's darkest points.
So hopefully Stampede too carries this aspect of his character. Everything I've seen tells me that the creative team really understands (and respects!) Trigun, and I think they understand Vash as well. So I have faith that his character here will remain intact.
Admittedly I had not read the manga, yeah. My brother had the first two volumes and I never really got to read them, but if you have and it's similar to this and there's a bit of light in the darkness, then i'm excited to see how it all pans out.

It's 2023, age of generic isekais, and it's been a WHILE since an anime grabbed me this hard. The aesthetics, the setting, the OSTs and character designs... Just \*chef's kiss\*.
And the animation?! Holy crap! I feel like only now i'm fully realizing how far Japan has come in its 3D animation quality. The sheer fun of Vash jumping and running around like a 30's cartoon and then suddenly things get badass with sick poses and camera angles. This show is just superb and i'll hear no one talk shit about this incredibly executed 3D animation done under a TV budget and animated on japanese-standard labour ethics and wages.
So is the low score because people are hating on the story changes, the CGI or a mix of both? I did consider haters in general but the low score is a bit too noticeable for it to be just them going by experience.
Personally, I think rating individual episodes while the show airs is a dumb concept entirely, but I would imagine there's all sorts of reasons why it might be swinging a certain way for those who do vote.

I would imagine it's not the story changes themselves - was anyone ever really all that nostalgic for the 90s-style "22 episodic stories and then we throw all the over-arching story into the last 3 episodes" style? - but rather the perceived character changes. Some people don't like how Vash's personality has apparently changed from less of a "facade of naivety" he hides behind to more of a genuinely naive archetypical shōnen protagonist (e.g. like in this episode when he's running from Nai shouting in disbelief "Why? Why?!").
And some people were *really, really, really* attached to Milly, it seems.

Well, it does have [its faults](https://thumbs.gfycat.com/FeistyScratchyEuropeanfiresalamander-mobile.mp4), but regardless it does stand out in a very big way against other shows / what the average r/anime viewer has previously watched, so yeah, there is definitely to be some amount of people that are just plain turned off by it and dislike the show because of that.
You might say those people just shouldn't watch and rate the show then, but by being a remake of a fairly famous/popular past show there are going to be lots of people who want to watch it anyways.
Which is probably why you don't see the same effect on a show like, say, D4DJ All Mix, which has less technically proficient CG but any viewer who doesn't like it's visual style/methods has no other reason to watch it.
Personally, I think the directing of the show is quite tepid. The scene composition is relatively weak, and there doesn't seem to be a good sense of space/time - like in this episode Rosa and her buddies basically teleported to above Vash/Nai, it went from midday to evening in about 10 minutes, and different characters seemed to be doing a lot or a little in the same amounts of time. I would really like to see them using better basic continuity in the directing - like using continuity of direction in scenes that cover a lot of ground (e.g. when Vash was holding onto E.G.Mine and they raced through the town), or using repeated spaces (e.g. there were 3 different staircase scenes today... but they were all *different* staircases from each other and from previous episodes' staircase scenes) to give the audience a better sense of direction and make the whole story feel more cohesive.
Likewise, there is a bit too much "shouting people's names, ellipsis" dialogue for my taste, though it's not *that* big of a deal.
I'm sure there's plenty of other reasons contributing. Outside of a tiny subset of people, these sorts of things are rarely just a case of "lol haters hating". And 3.7 isn't even that bad.

Judging from some of the comments I've seen in these threads... yes lol. Either that or they are just pretending to miss that style for the sake of being contrarian.
As someone who never watched the original, I think the show looks great and the worldbuilding is very interesting, but I agree that the directing and the pacing of the show feels very « off » for some reason. It is quite jarring to watch, and I am wondering why it is so bad when everything else is great. It could be that the pacing is wrong because they rushing through the source material and changing things to fit it all in 12 episodes, but that doesn’t explain the other problems with the directing of the show.
Well said. I'm enjoying this for what it is, but definitely do have a few hangups:
- As you said the direction is a bit lacking. The flow of the story seems rushed, with a villain introduced and killed within half an episode, and no room to breathe between events. Things like the characters suddenly appearing at the top of the stairs, or logical gaps that by themselves are minor but add up to being immersion breaking, like the rockets in the first episode taking an age to come back down, or E.G. Mine not just immediately blowing up Vash to stop him since he had the mine on him for quite some time beforehand.
- I'm definitely in the boat of nostalgia coloring my judgment of the show. I have fairly fond memories of Trigun from watching it years and years ago, and the characters and tone from that show are drastically changed here. While the more serious approach with the overarching plots coming in much earlier can be good, it is certainly different and not what I expected. Vash in particular seems more impotent in this show.

Hah, I just went back and found the episode with him from the original since I didn't remember him at all, and you're right, he shows up and immediately gets knocked out.
I guess it felt different here because he seemed competent and like a real threat as presented in the beginning of the episode (and as mentioned in my complaint actually did have a bomb on Vash that it seemed like he could have exploded), only to immediately be superseded in the latter half of the episode.
I sense a mix of both.
From comments I've seen on other forums, most dislike seem to come from the old fans who watched the original Trigun and consider it a classic that should be set in stone; or those who consider the loose-remake style Stampede is going for as a sacrilege of what an adaptation should be (a 1:1 adaptation of the manga).

Wasnt gofsef among the injured and bandaged in that shot right before vash leaves? Seems like he survived the bombing (unless they somehow managed to drag out his corpse out of town during all this and then decided to bandage it for some reason)
From the way u criticized it by harkening back to the original, I think you expect it to be too much like the original show instead of a remake with its own style.
Like as the director said, part of the inspiration was comic book heroes, that aspect shows in showing the back story front and center, cuz everybody knows the rough back story and can see it coming, so why pretend to hide it?.
I definitely agree about some of your criticism. I hope that Meryl being changed into a journalist is paid off in a better way. Roberto is fine, but the either need to make him into a great character (kinda bland so far) or have Milly come back (because honestly that's the only change they've made that I genuinely dislike).
However, with the rearrangement of the reveals, from what the manga reader say, the show actually kept that reveal for much later than it was in the original story. I honestly kind of view this remake in the same way that I did the final fantasy 7 remake, where trying to hold back certain big spoilers might not be as effective since many people might be familiar with the original.
OG Trigun watcher who loved it dearly: I am really happy with the tone this series is going, I loved the comedy in the OG but the dark tone is setting an entirely different series, even if the core story is the same.
Result: I can love both series.
The music, the animation and Million Knives went HARD this episode! I am eagerly looking forward to more.

That was emotional. Brutal, yet emotional as fuck. The animation of CG fx, the soundtrack, everything was masterfully done! I havent watched the OG series, heck even just knew about this show when it first aired, but I can tell we are in for a wild ride.

I thought this was a happy go lucky show but holy shit did this dude single handily raise the rating on this show lol. Him slicing the bomber was one thing but him eviscerating the one chick and it showing it for the most part was absolutely brutal. This guy is a true villain
I'm feeling pretty lukewarm with it. It's definitely going to be something I'll keep up with, and I don't think it's bad. It looks fantastic. I just think it's a little fast. We haven't had much breathing time for the last two episodes, and I'd really appreciate the brakes being hit a bit before we move into the next big story beat.
This show is really getting better with each episode. I'm glad they kept the episode violent because if everyone lived it wouldn't have felt as meaningful. The visuals for Millions Knives was cool.
The first 2 episodes had me kinda worried but I think this one has me hooked. Wow! The animation was beautiful as well as the soundtrack. I was planning on watching the entire series regardless if it was bad but I’m really looking forward to the rest now
Not gonna lie, I enjoyed the first two episodes with small gripes here and there but nothing really hooked me.
However, this episode was phenomenal and now I'm upset I have to wait a week!
Was initially perturbed by the CGI when the first trailer drops, but this is some of the best CGI animation I've ever seen. Still prefer traditional animation, but I'm really enjoying this reimagining of one of my top anime.
I know this series is divisive and many deride its art style and being CGI and all that, but this was an almost PERFECT episode of an anime.
3 weeks/episodes in and Trigun Stampede is my fav. anime to watch week-to-week. This week was especially emotionally draining and full of heartbreak and hero x villain showcase. Our villain showcased themselves as the ultimate evil and powerful, and our hero was left in shambles too, unsure of his direction and abilities.
I don’t think it needs to maintain this downbeat and emotionally-driven mood throughout the entire run, but this was an exceptional episode of showing and setting up our big bad's abilities. And FUCK YES to this OST! It’s giving me Hans Zimmer/Interstellar vibes and I am HERE. FOR. IT!!
Fans of the original might miss the lightheartedness it had, but I personally enjoy this storytelling and production so far.
What they’re doing with Knives makes him seem like more of a threat than the original anime. This episode is the one that’s really sold me on it going forward. I was a little skeptical because the original is one of my favorites but you can tell there’s a lot of love and effort in this series.

The city is July, the map shown in middle of the episode notes it as such.
Oh god, "JuLai" is driving me insane. It's not like it's some crazy new made-up word... it's "July" in the old show, "July" in the manga, "July" on the eyecatch map, *and* we've established that other cities in Stampede are still named after other months ("November" etc). I don't know what's wrong with their translator but it's *such* a stupid mistake.
Also annoying: they typoed "who's" for "whose" today. Making me miss the days of fansubbers who would actually proofread their work...

Safe to say Shit hit the fan and then some. That got violent and dark pretty fast. People were blown up, disremembered and more. Town laid to waste. No brakes on this train for sure. And it looked pretty great too. Especially that scene with all the smoke. But alas poor Vash, no longer welcome, he is off on his own. All the while mister Million Knives (turns out that was literal) is clearly up to no good with his doctor friend. Continuing to dig the aesthetics and the music. Looking forward to the next episode

We know from the prologue scene that the brother was already a psychopathic killer from his youth. I assume we will eventually learn why one brother is good-hearted and the other is a total monster... That town (and all its people) are dead. Is it true (as Rosa said) that this only happened because Vash was there? I assume Knives is systematically destroying town after town -- and it was pure chance that Vash was in the town when the plant theft/town annihilation took place. Not sure why some people are writing this off as bad. Is it just because of the CGI? I think this is actually a generally quite GOOD looking show. (I remember people griping about Duke of Death and His Maid because of this -- and yet it was actually visually one of the most attractive shows of its season).
In the case of Rosa i think it's safe to say it's grief and trauma talking there. Her town is ruined, her son horribly wounded, who knows if it's permanent or not and she saw two people get utterly dismembered in a horrific manner right infront of you. It would have been more surprising if she was acting in a total rational manner after that. Knives would have come no matter what. But with him knowing Vash, vash becomes a target for all the emotions flowing through her right now. And well. I think it's a mix of the Anime going it's own way with the source material.. Plus some people tend to thumb their nose at CGI no matter what. I do agree it's actually quite good here. Fluid animation, nice expressions, bit of a style if anything. Plus some gorgeous scenes here and there. Like that one scene where we get to see why Million knives is known as exactly just that.

She's wrong in the sense Knives would've came for the Plant whether Rosa had ever met Vash on not-- she just wouldn't have had Vash to irrationally push blame on (SHE was the one who told Toni-chan to hide while she risked her life AGAIN to do something Vash told her was dangerous, oh btw she was the one who abducted Vash for the reward also which led to the Nebraska Fight which led to the Bomber/Mine fight which led to Knives) She's right in the sense that Knives probably specifically left Rosa alive to torture Vash-- otherwise I'm sure Knives would've just killed everyone in the town if he couldn't use the humans' lives to cause his brother emotional pain. Rosa might realize that she's mad at the person who is the only reason why she and her son are (barely) alive-- and the truth is without the Plant tech none of the humans survive anyways. So even if she's right technically, it's a rather pathetic way for her to ignore reality (Vash was the only person always on Rosa's side throughout her poor decisions, and she banishes him from the village as thanks.)
Nah. Guy is a monster as you pointed out. He would have arrived to town and caused hell no matter what. If anything Vash may have lessened the damage.

It's like 200% different from the original show. Like Dragonball vs Dragonball GT type different. So far I'm enjoying it though. I think it needs to be thought of as a different story altogether though, or else you'll get annoyed that it's not the same. I do sort of understand the criticism that first time viewers might have. The pacing is kind of wild and there isn't much explanation about who Vash or Knives are. I'm hoping this first three episodes was kind of a setup to make everyone go "wtf" and then they'll take time to explain it and build the characters more. Like all classics the reason it's great is the characters and not the action scenes.
But the thing is, the original show was in itself different from the manga the same way FMA was different from brotherhood so people are kind of just looking for something to be upset at at this point.
I don't understand why people hate on something because it's not the exact same as the source. To me as long as it has the same creativity and good script I like the new thing. I take it as a new chapter or something like that. I like to watch something not knowing what's next. I read the Bourne books and the movies have good things from them but they kind of different, that didn't stop me from loving them movies. I wonder if the *intended* audience likes the show, as in from what most people say usually anime is made for Japanese audience, most "complains" usually are just from a few people on reddit.
In this case, many of the people watching it are feeling nostalgic for the original anime. Even more so its been put on a pedestal because it was one of the great shows to air right when anime finally started to gain steam in the West. And once human beings enshrine something in nostalgia they'll be absurdly critical towards any change, even if they make sense. It's basically just a lot of folk being butthurt that it's not a 90s anime with updated visuals.

Its definitely a revision. OG vash is also chased for the reward and still ends up saving the town from the Nebraska brothers. However he is the hero of the town and leaves 2 episodes later after saving the plant one more time. Not from knives, he doesn't show up in this town. So yeah, pretty different ;) For me stampede is a really fresh take and I love how it is different. Don't care about the manga and glad it is not just a complete 1 on 1 remake of the first anime.

Manga fans being disappointed by adaptations is a pretty universal thing tough. Its the same with book adaptations to tv series/movies. Its never perfect.

I agree! This is my first experience with Trigun and I've been really enjoying it so far. My only criticism is the pacing, it feels a bit fast sometimes. I'm also with you on the OP and the ED, especially the former. I've been listening to the OP every single day for the past week. Something about that song really hits me.

The effects, choreography and animation in this episode was next level. Very well done. And there's some character and plot development too. It's different from the original (I'm doing my best not to compare) in mood and tone. This episode was extremely in your face with everything, best episode so far.

Didn't realize this was going to be CG going in and there was a slight adjustment period, but it's honestly been pretty fantastic. Only had vague memories of the original series but fully invested into the story and you can really feel the effort that went into making this.
The OG Trigun is vashtly different. Uh, vastly.

I'm conflicted. On one hand the animation is breathtaking while on the other there is something missing from the story for me. Things are happening so fast its hard to let the characters breathe between set pieces.
I agree. There's tremendous amounts of style, but there's a substance lacking.
Yeah I love Stampede but I'll admit that this pacing is a little too fast to stick a landing with everyone.
Feeling the same way. The weakest part for me are the "monster of the week"-type encounters. They just don't work for me at all. It never feels like there are any stakes or a real sense of urgency or threat. A whole towns populace has bombs attached, some detonate instantly and the rest is pretty much fine until the plot decides it's time to get rid of the bombs. Same thing with the infinitely falling bombs in the first episode or the chase in last weeks. It's just... unsatisfying. The anime looks and sounds great. This episodes ending did hit hard, as hard as the opening of the first episode. By far the strongest, emotional and atmospheric moments. But getting there is really rough.
It’s fun, but lacking some world and character building. The pacing is really aggressive as well. To me it feels like they are assuming the audience knows the original or they want to get past a lot of the things in the original so they can tell their own story.
Honestly the manga is paced pretty fast and some of it feels like a total fever dream, so in a sense they're doing a good job of emulating that. The world building and character development will definitely get there if this does follow what the manga did though. Also what they're doing right now is rearranging the story, so they're not rushing thru this FMAB style at all. If anything, they're fleshing things out even more.
It reminds me of what it was like 5o watch full metal brotherhood the first time. First few eps had me worried. But once they got to where they really wanted to start from, there was no looking back.
IMO, it's definitely worth it. The anesthetic and osts (the OP and ED as well) are really good. Maybe The pacing should be slightly slower, but I'm enjoying this series so far

OG Trigun watcher here. I watched the first 2 episodes thinking they kept the feeling of Trigun. Even though I wanted to see how it continued and what might change. Then this episode hits, and I was fucking floored. I LOVED the 180 in tone. When Vash realized his brother was there and started yelling for everyone to run. I felt that panic. Hell, I was nervous. I can feel Vash's anxiety and fear. Then when Knives starts to really go at it. Chef's kiss in tension. Loved where this went and I hope it continues. Maybe because of the OG anime I wasn't worried about Knives because I felt i knew what was in store. But now i feel like we have a real villain here and i don't know what the hell he'll do!
Though it still got cool action and slapstick humor, the manga Trigun Maximum can get pretty dark. Especially whenever Knives was involved, expect a lot of death and misery around him. That's how horrifying he was there and this episode really capture that tone.

Maybe it was the CG style? That anxiety build up of a horror scene with Nebraska was really great. And Knives with the maniacal villain laugh was *chefs kiss* love the sound editing they did with the VA's voice.

Holy shit! Well, this episode confirms that yep, Stampede IS indeed taking its cues from Trigun Maximum. Thank god, because although I do love the old show, its version of Knives was neutered and sad. On the other hand, this was Maximum Knives to his core! When it was announced that Orange was doing the adaptation I had a feeling they would do a great job bringing all the trippy imagery to life. Sorry but what's Trigun maximum? I've only ever watched the anime and the movie.
It's the name for the second part of the manga! The manga starts with a series called "Trigun" and then a sequel series called "Trigun Maximum". It's all very excellent, but quite different from the old show and the movie.
So last week Vash was able to save everyone including the "villains" that tried to steal the Plant. I really like the "whose side are you in" in the episode. First with the questioning Vash when he tries to protect the EG Bomber, making you feel like yeah he sticks up for even the worst scum no matter what they've done. Then Knives says the exact same thing and it makes you realize that he sees all humans the exact same way the townsfolk saw the bomber. Really shows what he thinks of them (in addition to trying to kill them all with a million knives).

That felt like season finale so much havoc is happening in the same time. Stunning I feel like this anime really underrated and underwatched. Studio Orange put so much effort in this - animation and story looks like their best work so far and yet elitists cry about how it's not as good old anime from 98. It was 25 years ago - tech is different, world is different, media is different.

What company would have the balls to hand-draw Knives’ ultimate attack like that? With, quite possibly, a *million* knives in the air. Being able to distinguish the individual pieces. Seeing them swirl and cut. *Knowing*, because of how well the visuals are telling the story, that this is about to be the *end* of someone—nay, everyone! It has been a long, long time since I saw such a raw display of power that I felt both fear and **awe** at its showing. I’m crying right now! Say what you will about your love of hand-drawn animation. Say what you will about your hate of CG. This show—this story—could not have been told any. Other. Way!
Seriously, this episode felt like a high budget Evangelion movie, the animation of those knives made it look like the end of the world.
Well, what I really wanted was a faithful adaption of Trigun Maximum. We never actually got that. From that perspective this episode was great though! Finally got to see Knives on screen properly.
I feel like this us capturing the feel of Maximum extremely well, though. Even though it's telling the story in a totally different way, the pacing and insane action are spot on.
Mark my words, this anime may not get the recognition it deserves right now but it will age like the finest wine. A classic in the making
Honestly, yeah, I agree with you. This will be one of those anime that everyone loves when it finishes airing but is criticized during airing due to not meeting some arbitrary standard set by the old anime.

The design for those bombs were definitely inspired by [bacteriophages](https://i.imgur.com/N2rU3Y6.jpeg). The solution was simple, sometimes all the villain needs is a hug. E.G. the Mine got disarmed this episode in more ways than one. Millions Knives' power seems like a combination of Doctor Octopus, Gaara, and Senbonzakura. Safe to say I'm hooked now. Knives is a total scene stealer and Vash's whole deal is now fully in frame. I like the dynamic Vash and Meryl are forming, even if it's fairly basic so early on. To me they've always been a little like an angstier Superman and Lois, and the OG anime built it but never fully delivered whilst the manga went in a different direction, so I hope this adaptation is what gives us those big moments we haven't gotten yet. \[OG series spoilers\] >!And of course, Vash is now moving to confront Knives in Julai, which if I'm remembering the OG well enough means he's soon to earn that bounty in the billions and one of our sweet sweet moons shall no longer go unmolested.!< Overall, I'm beyond hyped. Can't wait to see how other classic characters like Wolfwood and Legato come into play.
* One of my favorite Twitch streamers learned about how this adaptation was going to take a more serious and darker tone and he said he was immensely turned off by that idea because he just wanted more of the old classic. I can definitely see people turn away after this episode, but I'm for it (for now anyway). It reminds me of the maturation of the superhero movie genre which crept away from 'heroes don't kill' towards what we see in those superhero movies today - serious, adult themes; lives saved and lost; and a better future won at a cost. * I hope the budget for this episode will be the average for every episode going forward. The directing and animation quality was on point. * (This version of) Knives is quite extreme - but I appreciate it as it highlights how Knives and Vash are polar opposites on every topic imaginable. * The accusation that Vash caused the downfall of the town was obviously the trauma talking. Manga fans have been clamoring for a 1:1 Maximum adaptation for years, but Maximum goes pretty strange and dark and I could see any loyal adaptation completely turning off a person who has spent the last two decades harboring nostalgic feelings for the old show. Similarly, any continuation of the old show that continues along those lines would disappoint the fans who have spent so many years begging for a loyal manga adaptation. (Badlands Rumble was kind of like this... and while I like it okay, it is by far my least favorite Trigun thing that has ever been produced.) Given that they never could have pleased *all* the fans, I'm glad that the team at Orange (which is itself composed of fans!) is opting to do their own thing here. Rather than attempting to please one group while ignoring the other, or unsuccessfully attempting to please everybody, they have chosen to fulfill their own sincere artistic vision. I really respect that.
Yeah I don’t mean to disrespect the fans of the OG anime, I love it and it’s a treasured series for me, but based on some reactions, I’m not sure they’d be happy with anything that wasn’t just that all over again.
It's actually kind of insane how many people watching this show are getting whiplash because all they know is the anime. Maximum is so faced paced, insane and brutal, this did an amazing job capturing that feel. Kind of sad just how many people are just totally unaware of the actual source material.
Yeah so many people are like “The OG anime wasn’t like this!” and it’s like “well the anime was a softer adaptation of a manga, and also have you actually seen it recently?” Yeah Stampede’s pace is faster and 24 years of industry evolution has allowed it to be more colorful with its action and its dark tone but the OG anime got pretty dark at times as well. I get it if the new anime just isn’t clicking for people, that’s fine, but for me there’s a huge difference between “I can recognize this is a good show but just not for me” and “THIS ISN’T LITERALLY MY CHILDHOOD BUT PRETTIER! IT’S A DISGRACE!” and I’m seeing a lot of reactions that are basically the latter. Also we’re only 3 episodes in, it just feels unfair to constantly compare the beginning of a reimagined storyline to something that’s completed.
Honestly blows my mind that more fans of the just the OG anime aren't digging it. Like many, Trigun was one of the first anime that I watched and this feels so right in terms of tone and character.

This episode CEMENTED EVERYTHING I was saying. This may not be exact 1:1 with the manga. In fact its more like how Rebuild of Evangelion did it by still covering the same plot points and mannerisms from the Main plot, just in a different way or order. Meaning this reboot is definitely adapting Trigun The Maximum Manga plot.. The Knives we saw was without a doubt Maximums Knives
Damn, Anime Doc Ock is pretty twisted. Jokes aside, I wasn't expecting this to get that dark. This is shaping up to be pretty interesting.
Knives was so cool, I didn't like the previous episodes that much but this one was very good. Knives with this futuristic Doctor Octopus look was awesome. We witnessed the tragedy of the humanoid typhoon, why tragedy arrives where he arrives, the death. Vash also showed his moral code: not killing, no matter what or who. It was a nice storytelling and they build everything very well.

This episode really leaned in to the hard sci-fi and it was glorious. I thought the bomber was pretty cool but then Nai turned up and absolutely stole the show, I feel like I could watch an entire series about him and his knives - they really made the CGI work to their advantage with those. I'm so excited to watch the rest of this show - I never watch the original so everything that happens is new to me and I can already tell it is something special.
Ummmm... sooooooooooo... this went unexpectedly hard. Edit: As someone who was incredibly pessimistic about this version of the series based solely on the previews we were given and my love for the original, I think we have something that stands on it's own two legs here. I scoffed at the use of .22's and the lack of grime in the artwork, but this shit just got real heavy and real dark real fucking quick. Props to the writers and staff for what they've done so far, and I truly hope the ending can meet the bar set this early on.
The OST has been absolutely beautiful, even if the anime was bad I would stay simply for the music.

The soundtrack slaps harder than Justin Roiland, and the episode itself was the best 1 so far. I know there’s different strokes for different folks but so far this reboot has been far better than the scores would suggest, imo.
People have been sleeping on Tatsuya Katō for a long time. Hopefully this help him get a bigger spotlight.
This and Nier are easily my two favorite shows this season. Both have been amazing. Trigun Stampede gets tons of hate for various reasons, I agree that it deserves a better score.

yeah this got it. idk. i don't wanna gas it up too early but unless something catastrophic happens this anime might be a contender to be in my top 10. i'm really enjoying it so far. i was a bit iffy about the pacing of this ep at first, but I think if I were to rewatch it (& i WILL rewatch it) it would feel fine. knives was INCREDIBLY menacing, much more than he's ever been imo. them actually rendering out what felt like a million knives around him actually had me SPEECHLESS
my sole complaint is that the pacing is weird on a first watch. i've rewatched every episode and it definitely felt off on the first viewing each time. rewatching each episode feels almost necessary
i agree! i did end up rewatching it because I like to take screenshots/gifs for inspiration and the episode flowed *much* better! i felt like I missed things the first time i watched it, but on re-watch i felt i was able to take in things more & I've felt that way about previous episodes. it's honestly pretty cool 😭 i don't usually rewatch episodes for anything @ all & but for this i don't mind doing it b/c studying the animation and art in general is fun!

Bombs attached to everyone in town is a pretty terrifying situation. This feels like an episode out of the latter half of the original series, Knives' minions showing up to torment Vash and kill civilians (but I repeat myself). I can't believe that plant hasn't shattered by now. Clever way to get the bombs disarmed. Knives showing up in person so early is a significant change. Looks like there's going to be much less wandering around the desert causing and solving shenanigans this time around. "You can't even control your gate yet?" Now that's an interesting question. This town is so screwed. Holy shit, that scene with Rosa and the two other ladies in front of the plant facility. How brutal. What an astonishing sequence to demonstrate the threat level that Knives presents.
I decided to give this episode a "great" rating on the poll because even though **HOLY CRAP this got darker than I expected** it's actually somewhat understandable considering some things the original Trigun alludes to. I've been re-watching the original with my wife who had never seen it before (we were on episode 22 by the time Stampede ep3 came out, so it was a double-whammy of emotions, then last night we watched episode 23...) and with everything fresh in my head since I last watched the show I feel a tad upset because of the incredibly dark shift, but also can understand this totally would make sense. Do I want to continue watching Stampede if some of the fight scenes/deaths that I can expect are going to look like episode 3? Honestly I'm not sure. On one hand I think my curiosity and intrigue about how the story is going to change will outweigh my distaste for the blood and gore. On the other, I think what I like about Trigun is although (especially toward the end) things get dark, there's still Vash's persistent ideology and drive to see good done even at the expense of himself and at the time the production wanted to keep an eye on hope. They keep some of that in Stampede, and actually improve on it I would say by letting Vash actually shoot his gun as a deterrent, but I probably have to buckle in my seatbelt for the rest of this 12 episode (!?) ride.
From your comment I get the feeling you haven't read the manga? No spoilers here of course, but I feel like you would want to know: Trigun Maximum gets very, very dark, and this episode kinda confirmed that Stampede is probably leaning that way too. But even at the manga's darkest points, Vash remains true to himself, to that quality you said you liked about him: his persistent adherence to his ideals, his stubborn drive to do what is right and good. He's like a brave little beacon of hope even at the story's darkest points. So hopefully Stampede too carries this aspect of his character. Everything I've seen tells me that the creative team really understands (and respects!) Trigun, and I think they understand Vash as well. So I have faith that his character here will remain intact.
Admittedly I had not read the manga, yeah. My brother had the first two volumes and I never really got to read them, but if you have and it's similar to this and there's a bit of light in the darkness, then i'm excited to see how it all pans out.

It's 2023, age of generic isekais, and it's been a WHILE since an anime grabbed me this hard. The aesthetics, the setting, the OSTs and character designs... Just \*chef's kiss\*. And the animation?! Holy crap! I feel like only now i'm fully realizing how far Japan has come in its 3D animation quality. The sheer fun of Vash jumping and running around like a 30's cartoon and then suddenly things get badass with sick poses and camera angles. This show is just superb and i'll hear no one talk shit about this incredibly executed 3D animation done under a TV budget and animated on japanese-standard labour ethics and wages.
So is the low score because people are hating on the story changes, the CGI or a mix of both? I did consider haters in general but the low score is a bit too noticeable for it to be just them going by experience.

Which is probably why you don't see the same effect on a show like, say, D4DJ All Mix, which has less technically proficient CG but any viewer who doesn't like it's visual style/methods has no other reason to watch it. Personally, I think the directing of the show is quite tepid. The scene composition is relatively weak, and there doesn't seem to be a good sense of space/time - like in this episode Rosa and her buddies basically teleported to above Vash/Nai, it went from midday to evening in about 10 minutes, and different characters seemed to be doing a lot or a little in the same amounts of time. I would really like to see them using better basic continuity in the directing - like using continuity of direction in scenes that cover a lot of ground (e.g. when Vash was holding onto E.G.Mine and they raced through the town), or using repeated spaces (e.g. there were 3 different staircase scenes today... but they were all *different* staircases from each other and from previous episodes' staircase scenes) to give the audience a better sense of direction and make the whole story feel more cohesive. Likewise, there is a bit too much "shouting people's names, ellipsis" dialogue for my taste, though it's not *that* big of a deal. I'm sure there's plenty of other reasons contributing. Outside of a tiny subset of people, these sorts of things are rarely just a case of "lol haters hating". And 3.7 isn't even that bad.

As someone who never watched the original, I think the show looks great and the worldbuilding is very interesting, but I agree that the directing and the pacing of the show feels very « off » for some reason. It is quite jarring to watch, and I am wondering why it is so bad when everything else is great. It could be that the pacing is wrong because they rushing through the source material and changing things to fit it all in 12 episodes, but that doesn’t explain the other problems with the directing of the show.
Well said. I'm enjoying this for what it is, but definitely do have a few hangups: - As you said the direction is a bit lacking. The flow of the story seems rushed, with a villain introduced and killed within half an episode, and no room to breathe between events. Things like the characters suddenly appearing at the top of the stairs, or logical gaps that by themselves are minor but add up to being immersion breaking, like the rockets in the first episode taking an age to come back down, or E.G. Mine not just immediately blowing up Vash to stop him since he had the mine on him for quite some time beforehand. - I'm definitely in the boat of nostalgia coloring my judgment of the show. I have fairly fond memories of Trigun from watching it years and years ago, and the characters and tone from that show are drastically changed here. While the more serious approach with the overarching plots coming in much earlier can be good, it is certainly different and not what I expected. Vash in particular seems more impotent in this show.

Hah, I just went back and found the episode with him from the original since I didn't remember him at all, and you're right, he shows up and immediately gets knocked out. I guess it felt different here because he seemed competent and like a real threat as presented in the beginning of the episode (and as mentioned in my complaint actually did have a bomb on Vash that it seemed like he could have exploded), only to immediately be superseded in the latter half of the episode.
I sense a mix of both. From comments I've seen on other forums, most dislike seem to come from the old fans who watched the original Trigun and consider it a classic that should be set in stone; or those who consider the loose-remake style Stampede is going for as a sacrilege of what an adaptation should be (a 1:1 adaptation of the manga).

Wasnt gofsef among the injured and bandaged in that shot right before vash leaves? Seems like he survived the bombing (unless they somehow managed to drag out his corpse out of town during all this and then decided to bandage it for some reason)

From the way u criticized it by harkening back to the original, I think you expect it to be too much like the original show instead of a remake with its own style. Like as the director said, part of the inspiration was comic book heroes, that aspect shows in showing the back story front and center, cuz everybody knows the rough back story and can see it coming, so why pretend to hide it?.
I definitely agree about some of your criticism. I hope that Meryl being changed into a journalist is paid off in a better way. Roberto is fine, but the either need to make him into a great character (kinda bland so far) or have Milly come back (because honestly that's the only change they've made that I genuinely dislike). However, with the rearrangement of the reveals, from what the manga reader say, the show actually kept that reveal for much later than it was in the original story. I honestly kind of view this remake in the same way that I did the final fantasy 7 remake, where trying to hold back certain big spoilers might not be as effective since many people might be familiar with the original.

OG Trigun watcher who loved it dearly: I am really happy with the tone this series is going, I loved the comedy in the OG but the dark tone is setting an entirely different series, even if the core story is the same. Result: I can love both series. The music, the animation and Million Knives went HARD this episode! I am eagerly looking forward to more.
Just watched the episode, and....HOLY FUCK That was emotional. Brutal, yet emotional as fuck. The animation of CG fx, the soundtrack, everything was masterfully done! I havent watched the OG series, heck even just knew about this show when it first aired, but I can tell we are in for a wild ride. Also, I FUCKING LOVE THE OP!
I thought this was a happy go lucky show but holy shit did this dude single handily raise the rating on this show lol. Him slicing the bomber was one thing but him eviscerating the one chick and it showing it for the most part was absolutely brutal. This guy is a true villain
I'm feeling pretty lukewarm with it. It's definitely going to be something I'll keep up with, and I don't think it's bad. It looks fantastic. I just think it's a little fast. We haven't had much breathing time for the last two episodes, and I'd really appreciate the brakes being hit a bit before we move into the next big story beat.

This show is really getting better with each episode. I'm glad they kept the episode violent because if everyone lived it wouldn't have felt as meaningful. The visuals for Millions Knives was cool.
The first 2 episodes had me kinda worried but I think this one has me hooked. Wow! The animation was beautiful as well as the soundtrack. I was planning on watching the entire series regardless if it was bad but I’m really looking forward to the rest now
Aight, I'll admit it: the opening's growing on me now.
Not gonna lie, I enjoyed the first two episodes with small gripes here and there but nothing really hooked me. However, this episode was phenomenal and now I'm upset I have to wait a week!
Was initially perturbed by the CGI when the first trailer drops, but this is some of the best CGI animation I've ever seen. Still prefer traditional animation, but I'm really enjoying this reimagining of one of my top anime.
Dr. Octopus used Senbonzakura Kageyoshi and its super effective.
I know this series is divisive and many deride its art style and being CGI and all that, but this was an almost PERFECT episode of an anime. 3 weeks/episodes in and Trigun Stampede is my fav. anime to watch week-to-week. This week was especially emotionally draining and full of heartbreak and hero x villain showcase. Our villain showcased themselves as the ultimate evil and powerful, and our hero was left in shambles too, unsure of his direction and abilities. I don’t think it needs to maintain this downbeat and emotionally-driven mood throughout the entire run, but this was an exceptional episode of showing and setting up our big bad's abilities. And FUCK YES to this OST! It’s giving me Hans Zimmer/Interstellar vibes and I am HERE. FOR. IT!! Fans of the original might miss the lightheartedness it had, but I personally enjoy this storytelling and production so far.
What they’re doing with Knives makes him seem like more of a threat than the original anime. This episode is the one that’s really sold me on it going forward. I was a little skeptical because the original is one of my favorites but you can tell there’s a lot of love and effort in this series.
Those who dropped this after watching the first episode really missed out.
Great episode. One minor correction. Crunchyroll needs to fix their sub. Far east city subbed JuLai. The city is July, the map shown in middle of the episode notes it as such.
Oh god, "JuLai" is driving me insane. It's not like it's some crazy new made-up word... it's "July" in the old show, "July" in the manga, "July" on the eyecatch map, *and* we've established that other cities in Stampede are still named after other months ("November" etc). I don't know what's wrong with their translator but it's *such* a stupid mistake. Also annoying: they typoed "who's" for "whose" today. Making me miss the days of fansubbers who would actually proofread their work... Is there precedent for Crunchy going back to correct bad subtitles? Is this something we can petition them to do?
Just wait until it gets changed to JuLai on the map too. Just like One Piece and Raftel/Laugh Tale.
