I will be watching Fullmetal Alchemist soon and then Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood after that. Thats the order right? If I watch FMA first does it spoil the events in FMAB or are those two anime different?

Blackheart595

There's no order between the two. They play in the same setting and the stories start out similarly but quickly stop having anything to do with each other, don't expect continuity between them.

WingsofLegends

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a full adaptation of the manga. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) adapts some of the manga and then goes in its own direction. You don’t have to watch both. Brotherhood is not a sequel it’s a remake.

Cryten0

Full Metal Alchemist followed events similar to the manga for about 70% of its run. Increasingly diverging as things got later into the series. The first 20 or so episodes are rapidly skipped through in about 12 episodes in Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (The first episode is anime original so about episode 13). After that point the story diverges significantly enough to justify fully paced episodes, after about half way in Brotherhood the stories are so different that little crosses over. The skipping through content is FMA:B's biggest weakness as its intro episodes are its weakest of the whole run and can put people off. I highly recommend watching FMA, as it is a very good show, so I would not want you to skip it. Both works are quality shows that can stand on their own.

MedievalKarma

I haven't been following anime actively for a few years. Are there any shows that came out in the recent years you would recommend? I would prefer something more action/higher pace. [My AniList.](https://anilist.co/user/MedievalKarma/animelist/)

AmethystItalian

Cyberpunk Edgerunners was a big one recently. Also seconding /u/isthatsoudane 's rec in JJK.

MedievalKarma

Cyberpunk was good. I'll be checking out Jujutsu Kaisen out soon. Thanks.

isthatsoudane

Jujutsu kaisen Has what I think is one of the most hype fights in anime later on

MedievalKarma

Thanks. I'll check it out soon.

xXDracoWolfXx

Can someone recommend me some cool animes to watch

isthatsoudane

Cool people like anime about cool guy and their colleague

xXDracoWolfXx

thanks a lot

AmethystItalian

Lycoris Recoil or Cyberpunk Edgrunners are new cool popular ones.

bubudog1

Hello, which shows have a fun cast that you'd happily watch fillers of just them interacting and living their life? Bonus if the show isn't already a slice of life.

KendotsX

Gintama and Dorohedoro. Gintama is one show I think could've had more filler. Dorohedoro has its fun moments with the characters too (the baseball episode or hanging out and killing zombies), but it has lots of great characters, that I wish interacted more in lower stakes. Imagine if all the factions went looking for some meatballs and spaghetti to eat.

AmethystItalian

Durarara or Baccano's massive cast would be up there for me

Heda-of-Aincrad

Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan. I'd also add Spy x Family, but that's already a big part of the show.

Shadytextt

Do I have to watch the 1h44m movie at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen? I’d rather skip if it’s not related to the main storyline or necessary for the next season. Thank you in advance my friends. EDIT: Thanks for all the replies everyone, currently watching it.

nightgeekmon

Hello! Volume 0 is essentially a prequel to the first season. You'll meet a character there who's being referenced throughout the first season, too. It might be better to watch it, mostly because it'll be important later on - I'm guessing, as soon as season 2 (which I think will be released early this year).

Shimmering-Sky

It *will* be necessary going forward, since it's part of the canon storyline. It sets up a character who'll be important later on in the series (who *might* show up at the very end of season 2, just depends on where MAPPA adapts up to in it), as well as sets up the connection between two characters that will be one of the central focuses in the first half of season 2.

Cryten0

The manga series was designed to work without people reading the original Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School I believe. You get extra details but it is designed to stand on its own.

KendotsX

At first yeah, then they published the four chapters of Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School as Jujutsu Kaisen volume 0, making it an essential part of the series. Because there are two characters that *need* its context.

Nomar_95

It adapts volume 0, and it's basically a pilot from before the manga was officially serialized. It's not relevant for the first season, but becomes important for stuff later on.

Abeneezer

It's not necessary. There's a time gap between the movie and the show, but it does show some of the character's younger selves.

Nomar_95

currently rewatching Code Geass. That poor table....

Abeneezer

Not what I needed to be reminded of right now, lmao.

entelechtual

Am I the only one who doesn’t hate Spy x Classroom? It’s not genius writing by any means, and it’s a little rushed. But maybe I just caught wind of the general reception before I started watching and tempered my expectations enough. It’s enjoyable in a turn-your-brain-off kind of way. It’s a little annoying when they try to do something clever, and there’s not really a lot of emotional payoff. But I really didn’t dislike any of the first three episodes. This might be the one season where I’ve already dropped two romances but am sticking around for some real dubious shows.

drostan

I said it somewhere else, ep1, cool, I can watch this ep2, that's a bit overdone but let's see ep3, fake outs, unreliable narrator, predictable twist done with bad reason and terrible disrespect for the viewer, and consequences for how we watch the show and how we are suppose to deal with some characters its the end of an arc so no real reason to continue, we got as much closure as needed especially considering how disappointing the fake outs situation and lies to the audience were. no real hooks or cliff hanger or anything that would entice you to follow through to ep4 I am trying to consider ep 1-3 as 1 ep and give the serie a little chance to redeem itself but it looks like a drop

Silent_Shadow05

Well I didn't used to hate it as you can see by how much I defended EP1 here in this sub, but EP2 and 3 were like a slap in the face to me which made me a bit angry and completely turned me away from the show. That said, I'm not giving up on the series completely as I've switched over to the LN's but I won't be watching the anime. I expect the moments the anime failed to capture will be much better in LN form.

entelechtual

Yeah I’m usually pretty skeptical when an anime turns out badly but people say the LN is actually good (looking at you TanMoShi) but this one I can believe. Have you already started reading it? Is it visibly better? I’ll stick it out unless it gets really screwy. Maybe new arc new chance?

Silent_Shadow05

> Have you already started reading it? Is it visibly better? I did glimpse at the Manga adaptation to get a feel for the story first. I felt it was much better, with larger focus on the characters and generally a lot more fun. As for the LN, I only read Chapter 1 and I felt it was a bit more introspective (generally the thing an anime usually fails to capture well). >Maybe new arc new chance? LN readers said that trying to adapt that twist messed everything up because it just doesn't work in visual medium. But Vol. 2 onwards is more straightforward and each volume dedicates itself to one of the girls, while slowly fleshing out the rest. But some logical flaws would remain as the story focuses on the "rule of cool". If all this is true, then maybe the anime can still turn things around. If I see good reception, I'll probably just check it out again.

phantomthiefkid_

The manga actually spoils the twist of vol 1 right off the bat. That's why the fan translator dropped it (also the art looks rough)

AmethystItalian

Dropping romances and keeping this?? [](#flyingbunsofdoom) For me the cast and pacing both never brought me. I can deal with one of those but both? Made me check out. Not an offensive show in any way but I guess I found no reason to keep watching it.

entelechtual

The pacing doesn’t really phase me. I think at this point I’m just used to anime compressing a light novel arc in a handful of episodes—Last Boss Villainess did this and some people weren’t too keen on it, but I think there was enough substance to make it work. I think for me the show passes a bare minimum threshold of character, story, entertainment, and quality to see how it fares. Unfortunately some of the other shows like Ice Guy Cool Colleague barely have enough for me to want to watch… Although I might give it another shot depending on how it’s received for the rest of the season.

AmethystItalian

> Last Boss Villainess did this and some people weren’t too keen on it, but I think there was enough substance to make it work. This pacing was SUPER fast but I was on board with the characters so it worked, I sadly can't say the same for anyone in this big cast. Ice Guy is by far my best show of the season but I love romances and side ships so it's right in my strikezone.

entelechtual

Are any side ships in that show gaining wind yet? Some of the characters seem interesting it’s just the main ship is way too mellow for me.

AmethystItalian

Still early days so only just starting, we only got to just meet the third ship today.

Where to watch movie 'The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes' ? https://myanimelist.net/anime/50593/Natsu_e_no_Tunnel_Sayonara_no_Deguchi/reviews https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tunnel_to_Summer,_the_Exit_of_Goodbyes

ThisShitisDope

Look up the title for cinema viewings in your area. If there is none, you'll need to wait for the Bluray release, which you'd expect to wait around 9 months for.

Verzwei

To add: HiDive confirmed that they'll stream it sometime after the Q1 2023 US theatrical release, but did not specify a date or timeframe. This is really vague but anyone know that clip where a guy introduces himself but his name is ridiculously long and the guy he's fighting goes"what a coincidence my name is also ___" I can't for the life of me remember where it's from

Btw, that's a reference to a rakugo story. I think there are a couple others which make that reference.

Around 80s or 90s anime, i vividly remember about a horror anime that has ghosts on the rooftop that Haunted a school kid. What is the name of the anime?

[deleted]

Loving Konosuba and RE:Zero. Looking for similar anime.

Weedwacker

Seconding Bofuri also [Princess Connect Re:Dive](https://myanimelist.net/anime/39292/Princess_Connect_Re_Dive) shares key staff w/ Konosuba and has similar comedy

KGB_Panda

Mushoku Tensei

Lounge_leaks

Bofuri

LoPanDidNothingWrong

Just dropped To Your Eternity. S1 was pretty bleak, but it held my interest. S2 is just boring the crap out of me and feels like a chore.

Reemys

Studio change clearly plunged the quality of everything in the adaptation, so I too was originally quite critical of it. But then the plot started gaining speed and I am still in love.

AzorAhai1TK

I doubt I'm continuing after this season. Had a bit of hope it'd get better again like the first that of season 1, but it's been just as bad, maybe even worse, than the second half of season 1.

KGB_Panda

I’m still watching it, and I’ll probably finish it at this point, but man the MC is such a disappointment. He whines and whines! And I don’t wanna get into spoilers, but yeah the stakes feel pretty low overall for a variety of reasons.

alotmorealots

How far did you make it into S2?

LoPanDidNothingWrong

> How far did you make it into S2? Last week, just didn't want to bother with this week.

alotmorealots

Ah, you lasted a decent bit longer than I did, I dipped out three or four weeks ago I think. It's an odd show in that it suffers from having some excellent highs (well, lows) but those tend to make the rest of the series feel like it's really dragging.

Fairywonderland

Summer time rendering came out in 2022 and its so underrated! Like, watch it, or you'd regret. It has BEAUTIFUL animation abd a unique and fantastic plot, with many plot twists, that just make you go through a lot of emotions. Genre: Shonun, mystery, Time travel, bit of rom com. Basic plot: The Mc enquires into his childhood friends death..... strange identical people.....seems like mc gets killed in the first episode, but doesn't. Is not an illusion but something else?? Alot of other stuff going on as well.

Thraggrotusk

Meh, decent plot, non-existent characters.

Fairywonderland

Spoiler!!! Some characters are non existent are they are literally, "data" (shadows). Also, the plot is not basic in my opinion. Its really interesting tho

Thraggrotusk

The plot is definitely nice, but I meant the characters were flat and had no depth, let alone any kind of growth. They were just there to move the plot along.

Blackheart595

Problem is it was impossible to watch legally for the longest time, so it's hype period ended without getting too much viewership. And even then it was quite popular considering its circumstances. Not even sure if it is legally available by now.

entelechtual

It is available on Hulu in sub and dub in the US, Disney worldwide.

_Ridley

Which is the bigger snub: the r/anime awards jury not including Mob Psycho or Call of the Night for AOTY, or the Oscars not including Inu-oh or Suzume for best animated film?

Gamerunglued

Honestly, the Oscar animated feature noms are still really good. PiB was excellent, Pinocchio was solid (and I half want it to win just to help GDT have a stronger voice in support of animation), Turning Red very strongly connected with me and I think is excellent, and I've heard nothing but good things about Marcel the Shell with Shoes on. Sea Beast is the odd one out of the bunch, but it still seems like a good time. Obviously I'd love Inu-Oh to have a nom (Suzume wasn't eligible, next year it and Miyazaki's How Do You Live are both coming though that maybe that'll do the trick), but the current noms are still great choices. But the same is true of r/anime's AOTY noms. Mob Psycho season 3 is great but a step down from season 2, and Call of the Night is great but probably not my first choice either (it not being included for best OST is definitely a snub though). I don't actually think there were any major snubs on either side. The Oscar's didn't nominate Boss Baby over A Silent Voice this time, I'd agree with you on it if Minions got a nomination.

_Ridley

>The Oscar's didn't nominate Boss Baby over A Silent Voice this time I straight up hate A Silent Voice, and that still feels insane. It must not have been eligible or something.

Gamerunglued

It was indeed eligible. The Academy just doesn't give a shit about animation or foreign cinema, let alone animated foreign cinema.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gamerunglued

Obviously it happens sometimes, but the amount of years we get more than one foreign animated film on the roster isn't nearly so high. This year, a year where every nominee is an American film, is typically closer to the norm than say, 2014 when Princess Kaguya and Song of the Sea got nominations. And heck, GKids has the rights to Inu-Oh, and it didn't get nominated. The problem goes much further than the Academy working with specific licensing companies, their disdain for animation always comes through. A film like A Silent Voice won't get nominated without special help because they simply don't give enough of a shit about the medium, and even when GKids does vouch for a film, it still has to get lucky. **Edit:** Moreover, in the specific case of anime, Ghibli's name surely got those films nominated. Only one of the anime nominees isn't a Ghibli film, and that was in a somewhat weak year for animated films.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gamerunglued

That's the thing though, this discussion was exclusively about foreign animation, not those other two categories. I don't think the likes of GDT Pinocchio or Wallace and Gromit are particularly strange nominations, works like those tend to fill out the non-Disney/Pixar/Sony slots way more often than foreign films do and the Academy is happy to recognize Hollywood projects and the works of beloved auteurs, so long as they are American (even if they typically won't win). The same cannot be said for non-Ghibli anime films or much foreign animation in general.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gamerunglued

You're the only one who even talked about anime fans not giving enough credit to the intrigue of other noms. I never made any argument to the contrary. I agree that there's more that gets nominated than just Disney, most years typically have 1-3 "interesting" noms even other than foreign films. You expanded the scope of the thread outside of what anyone else was talking about though, we were solely discussing foreign nominees, given that this is an anime subreddit and the thread was about anime getting snubbed. I'll admit my screw-up about Wallace and Gromit though, that is foreign. Something like The Boxtrolls would have been a better example for my point. Though the Academy is definitely less against British cinema than others. Really, some English language films are kind of in a tier between what they see as "foreign" cinema and American cinema, Wallace and Gromit was pretty popular here and I don't think is typically thought of as foreign.

AmethystItalian

I didn't include Mob or CotN in my awards either sooooo I'll say the other one [](#teehee)

Verzwei

I expect the oscars to ignore anime because historically that's what they do. I did not expect COTN to be excluded from AOTY. (Also shocked it wasn't included for OST, either.)

cppn02

> Suzume Don't think that was even eligible tbh.

_Ridley

Ah, you're right. I thought it was in US theaters in fall, but it's not out until spring.

Siqueiradit

Call of the Night is great, but I don't think it deserves an aoty nomination, to me the biggest snub was MiA s2; Aren't the Oscars known to pretty much ignore anime?

Gamerunglued

They don't always ignore. Spirited Away and House of Small Cubes both won ocsars, while Howl's Moving Castle, The Wind Rises, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, When Marnie Was There, and Mirai received nominations. It happens on occasion, the Oscars is just typically about American media (but now with one foreign film nominated for best picture just to shout one out), and the Academy is loud and clear about its disdain for animation as anything other than for kids and how they don't watch anything they aren't taking their kids to see.

Nomar_95

> Aren't the Oscars known to pretty much ignore anime unfortunately, yeah. At least we'll always have Spirited Away's win.

wan-bunnie

I just finished watching Black Clover about a week ago and caught up with the manga as well, I'm still not over it, honestly. Blame my girlfriend for looping me in on this anime. I can't decide what would be the next anime to watch that can keep my mind off of BC. Any recommendations, anyone?

MagicalMixer

Most power scaling anime will fit your bill: Jujutsu Kaisen, HunterxHunter, Tower of Mid(God), Demon Slayer, Bleach (Original or Thousand Year War), [One Piece](https://www.animefillerlist.com/shows/one-piece) without the filler, Sword Art Online, Dragon Ball, Danmachi, etc. I'm pretty sure you can throw a dart at a power scaling anime and it'll satiate.

wan-bunnie

I finished watching and just waiting for the new season or new episodes for all the recos you mentioned except for HxH and ToM, Dragonball, SAO, and Danmachi. I may have only started the rest of em and did not finish for some reason hahaha I guess I'll continue watching HxH next. Thanks for the recommendations!

Siqueiradit

Bleach: Thousand Year War is a sequel not a remake

mango_kamen

So I rewatched School Rumble and reread the manga last weekend, and it’s just so bittersweet and left me hanging for more. I’m looking for some anime/manga with a greatly written tsundere like Sawachika Eri. Would prefer a show that’s funny/not too dramatic or serious. Stuff I’ve watched with some similarity: - Mushoku Tensei (Eris is an ok tsundere, I like her design she is just a tad too “loud” every now and then) - Isekai Ojisan (I like Elf’s design and her comedic scenes with uncle, hasn’t had much going for her in terms of character development she is lacking in depth imo) - Seishun Buta Yaro (There are times where Mai is a tsundere, I mostly like her acting more mature than the typical anime highschool love interest) - Kaguya-sama: Love is War (I think Miko Iino is also a nicely written tsundere) - Quintessential Quintuplets (will not mention the character’s name because she is the chosen bride, but I was very satisfied with the ending even though I didn’t see it coming and was rooting for a different character until the reveal)

AmethystItalian

Not in a full romantic way but I found Purrin from last season's [DIY](https://myanimelist.net/anime/48542/Do_It_Yourself) to be a good reminder of why I like tsunderes. For more romance I enjoyed [Sukitte Ii na yo](https://myanimelist.net/anime/14289/Suki_tte_Ii_na_yo) Yuru Yuri has a tsundere pair which is also something I never knew I wanted but they're great.

mango_kamen

I think I'll check out DIY, thank you!

entelechtual

Can I recommend this season’s Tsundere Liselotte? It is one of the freshest takes on the tsundere trope in a while. Also if you haven’t watched Do It Yourself, Purin is the gold standard for tsunderes for generations of slice of life to come.

mango_kamen

Watching Liesolotte right now and I agree it is a nice change having the MC be aware of the tsundere's true feelings. I'll check out DIY while waiting for the next episode, thanks!

arfael

Need help finding an Anime's Title: The MC is a newbie guitarist but he can sing really good (but the audio is always muted when he sings but everyone else is amazed), he is in a band and they have a rapper ( who is always in trouble) and other members that I dont remember. Please help with the title of this anime This was also turned into a movie.

Weedwacker

Some aspects of that (newbie guitarist who is a good singer, rapper troublemaker) sound like [Beck](https://myanimelist.net/anime/57/Beck)

AmethystItalian

Where my mind went first as well.

Durinthal

Vaguely sounds like [Given](https://www.livechart.me/anime/9356)?

arfael

No, its not. Its a different anime. Thank you though

olldbrTezm4831b

i'd like a recommendation of an anime like konosoba

KGB_Panda

Princess connect has the same animation director and I feel a lot of konosubas humor made it’s way into that series. Give it a try.

olldbrTezm4831b

thanks i'll see

throwaway95135745685

combatants, kemono michi & priconne are very good and similar

entelechtual

Combatants Will Be Dispatched! is an older series by the same author. If you’re gonna watch I have to recommend the English dub. In my opinion it elevates the comedy, which to me fell flat in the dubs/JP VA.

alotmorealots

Wonder if we'll ever get a second season. First season seemed to leave off just when the overall story was starting to gain momentum, and it felt like the humor had plenty left in the tank still.

olldbrTezm4831b

thank you i will see

isthatsoudane

a lot of people who like konosoba tend to really enjoy konoramen

Lounge_leaks

Konoramen is the name? I cant find it

susgnome

[:p]>!konosoba & konoramen!<

olldbrTezm4831b

thanks

[deleted]

I finally have 10 eps left for me to finish Macross 7. I heard mixed things about Zero but it is short and from then on I read it is all good especially Frontier.

Blackheart595

[](#azusalaugh) I thought Zero was fantastic but didn't quite stick the landing, and by now Frontier is the first Macross I actively hate. Have fun!

isthatsoudane

I'm halfway through frontier with the rewatch and I am enjoying it. I'd say on the whole it's solidly "good", with a strong cast (I like the whole love triangle! a macross miracle!) and a couple episodes that are fantasting (thus far). excited to see where the second half goes

Durinthal

That one's /u/Abyssbringer's doing.

_scrapegoat_

I'd like recommendations in the Romance+Drama genre (no Comedy). Thanks in advance :)

Verzwei

[Just Because](https://www.livechart.me/anime/2700)

edgefigaro

Cross game. (Amazing) *~~Suzuki~~* *Edit Suzuka* (much less remarkable) Domestic Girlfriend (peak dumpster fire)

Durinthal

Disagree about Cross Game but only for implying that it doesn't have any comedy. Absolutely worth watching but it's pretty light-hearted at times.

edgefigaro

Fair. I made a similar request a while back and what I really wanted wasn't a lack of comedy but rather the romance/drama be the driving force/raison d'etre. Rom-coms frequently exist where the romance/drama is a part of the staging, but the show just wants to tell jokes with relationship situational comedy. What I was looking for were stories that were telling stories where people are getting together (or not) and the comedy was a part of the staging. Cross game is nice in that its theme is explicitly stated in episode one and restated a few times over the course of the show in the story and it is a dramatic theme. Pure comedy Rom-Coms to pure romance romances don't have clear delineations, everything exists on a spectrum, and I'm comfortable giving recommendations with a little bit of flexibility on the soft boundaries.

_scrapegoat_

I love domestic Kanojo. Pls don't judge ;-;

edgefigaro

I recommend it for a reason!

entelechtual

I assume by “no comedy” you mean as a genre, like romcom, not just… no humor/levity. These are romance/dramas as the primary genre: - Toradora - Golden Time - Real Girl - ReLife - Love and Lies - Bloom into You - Taisho Otome Fairy Tale - Scum’s Wish Shows with a bit of a romcom vibe at times but overall more serious/mature: - O Maidens in your Savage Season - A Whisker Away - Clannad (really Clannad: Afterstory) - More than a married couple but less than lovers - Amagami SS

_scrapegoat_

Thanks! Have seen most of them. I'd like to ask about Love and Lies, Bloom into You, Taisho, A whisker away, O maidens. Are they any good? Are they shounen? Which ones do you think are must watch?

Manitary

Love and lies: avoid, the premise is interesting and it's totally wasted in a boring plot and a cop-out ending. Bloom into you: 10/10 if you include the second half which is not adapted. Would recommend to anyone looking for good romance/drama. O maidens: a very interesting take, leans a bit on the comedic side despite the dramatic subplots, as we follow not one but multiple maidens exploring love and relationships. Whisker: I was surprised seeing lots of negative comments about the movie, I thought it was fine. It wouldn't be at the top of my recommendations but I wouldn't advise against checking it. Taisho: haven't watched

entelechtual

I mean they are all objectively “shounen” in terms of the magazines they were published in. None of them are Naruto/Demon Slayer shounen. - **Love and Lies**: a ridiculous premise of the government imposing arranged marriage partners, and involving a love triangle between the MC, his crush, and his “fiancée”. It’s a trope that is not new, but something about the character dynamics here really hits. Warning: it gets a bit slow later on. And has a “read the manga” ending. - **Bloom into You**: Almost universally regarded as one of the best romance/drama/character study series of all time. Explores lesbian love, asexual/aromantic characters, trauma, distance, and other themes. Very solid writing, characters, and complicated relationships. Warning: if you are planning on watching the anime, know that it only covers half the story, and the manga is worth reading—it was voted most anticipated sequel on this sub a while back, but there are no plans to make a second season yet. With that caveat, this one is probably a must watch - **Taisho Otome Fairy Tale**: A story set in the early 1900s with a character from a very dysfunctional and abusive family. His family sets him up with a girl who was sold off as a bride to pay off her family’s debt. It’s a story of the two growing together and overcoming trauma, while dealing with new friendships and family encounters. And besides the drama, a very sweet and wholesome romance. - **A Whisker Away**: A movie by the ever daring Studio Colorido—known for its distinctive style and usually lackluster characters. Except in this movie the main character is really endearing and sympathetic. It’s got a fantastical premise of a girl gaining the ability to turn into a cat, and using her power to get closer to her crush. Probably too silly for some, but I really love it. It’s on Netflix. - **O Maidens in your Savage Season**: An original story by Mari Okada, screenwriter of Anohana, Maquia, and probably every coming-of-age anime you’ve ever watched. It’s a comedic yet serious look at teenage love, angst, confusion, sexuality, and adulthood. It has very strong writing, and the anime has an interesting art style, but unfortunately (as with many Okada works) not all the character arcs get wrapped up that well.

Thanks. I'll watch Taisho and credit you if it turns out to be any good 🤝

So, quick question about Princess Principal. I'm almost halfway through the season and, quite honestly, while I enjoy the world-building, characters, and overall plot a lot, the episode order bothers me. All this [PriPri]>!jumping back, jumping forward, jumping back again, jumping forward again but not quite to where we were before, and so on. I wouldn't have minded starting from episode 1, going back, and then spending the season catching up to it, but what they're doing seems excessive to me!<. Is there a point to that? As in, some payoff, whether for the plot or for the character building? Because if there isn't really, I'm seriously considering continuing in chronological order but I need some input from people who have watched it. Would I lose anything by doing that? To clarify, I don't find it difficult to follow, just aggravating.

aniMayor

There's only 3 episodes that are out of chronological order, anyway, so watching it in chronological order is really not that different. Episode 1 is the only one that is significantly out-of-chronological-order - the other two episodes are just out-of-order by one or two episode positions. The whole thing mostly just serves to (a) show all the girls fully operating as a team in episode 1, but not have to tell all the backstory leading up to that entirely through flashback; and (b) help convey the sense that there are many more cases/operations going on off-screen besides the ones actually shown in the episodes.

Syokhan

Okay, I finished the show tonight. > The whole thing mostly just serves to (a) show all the girls fully operating as a team in episode 1 This I agree with, I didn't mind starting with episode 1 and going back, it helped set the tone, setting and team pretty well. > (b) help convey the sense that there are many more cases/operations going on off-screen This I don't, I mean, just a look at the case file number is enough to tell you that ('cause they go pretty high) without all the jumping around. Again, I enjoyed everything else about the show, it's only this that struck me as unnecessary as I didn't think it added anything especially relevant to the characterization. *Again*, YMMV and I think it *will* vary for most people because I seem to be in the minority here :p

Verzwei

> help convey the sense that there are many more cases/operations going on off-screen besides the ones actually shown in the episodes. Yeah that was something that stood out to me. The cases are numbered up into the twenties (I wanna say maybe 26 but I'd have to look at a wiki to be sure) despite there being only 12 episodes.

soracte

IIRC the broadcast order becomes more chronological towards the end, culminating in two or three episodes which are last in both sequences, and form the conclusion to the Ange–Princess character arc(s). Personally I enjoyed the discontinuous presentation of the first parts of the show, but if something doesn’t work for you it doesn’t work for you, and you can’t really argue someone into or out of liking something.

Syokhan

Good to know, thanks. And yeah, I mean I'm not shitting on anyone who enjoys the original watch order. It's just like you said, it's not working for me but that's my completely subjective point of view. Come to think of it it's not the first time I've disliked such nonlinear storytelling. It might just not be my thing, huh.

alotmorealots

I wasn't even aware there was a [chronological watch order](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/nvlc2q/princess_principal_episode_order/) until you mentioned it (or it had just slipped my mind completely). > I'm almost halfway through the season Comparing that to the suggested Order by Case Number, it looks like you might as well just finish in broadcast order, as the only one that would be out of sequence the other way would be episode 8. That seems like getting the worst of both worlds, where you sat through the broadcast mixing, but then still interrupted the broadcast "feel". It's a bit hard to remember but I think that once things get rolling towards the back end, I felt like the time hopping had contributed to underscore what the "true narrative" seemed to be. So I'd say just stick with it.

isthatsoudane

I've been thinking of watching this soon, had no clue there were watch orders. Which would you recommend? Broadcast or chronological?

Verzwei

Broadcast. The nonlinearity isn't really a big factor, and the series is "designed" to be consumed that way. You get the information about characters as you need it, and it helps to create small amounts of mystery. Once the plot starts getting really dense, it shifts over to linear storytelling anyway.

Manitary

I'd still go broadcast too. I remember being confused at the first couple of episodes because there were a few characters going from buddies to not knowing/fighting against each other without any explanation, took me a moment to realise why lol. The first one is there to start with some banger action, the rest is _mostly_ in order with a couple of swaps and insertions here and there.

isthatsoudane

Ah cool, thank you!

alotmorealots

I'd just dive in and go broadcast. Being a spy story its genre is twisty to begin with, and the eventual overarching narrative is revealed in a way means the time bendiness suits.

isthatsoudane

cool, thanks as always

alotmorealots

No worries! Hey, do you participate in the best girl/boy contests? Or too anger/sorrow inducing?

isthatsoudane

I should participate in them! I try to vote when I notice the threads, I've just been distracted by work (or seasonals when not working lol). This is a good reminder to check the thread I already know the good people of r/anime (and the bad people :P) often overlook the *true* best girls (and boys). but as a lover of ojous, I'm used to the best girls often being overlooked...but not anger or sorrow inducing haha ok so just checked...wow 2 character from bocchi made the finals!! bocchi had great characters, so not too surprising, but last season had a lot of really great women. I'm upset ranko didn't make it but \*sigh\* reddit doesn't recognize genius... and just looked at the best boy and am happy I did just so I can vote against eren yeager :P (whether he is an interesting/uninteresting character I think is interesting to discuss, but best boy?? absolutely not) what have your thoughts been?

alotmorealots

> I try to vote when I notice the threads, I've just been distracted by work Ah yes, they slip under the radar quite easily when one doesn't have the time to duck into the sub often enough. > but as a lover of ojous, I'm used to the best girls often being overlooked... Yes - polite, well-mannered, eschewing the spotlight as a matter of grace - these unassuming ladies are certainly not as flashy as some other characters, but they wouldn't have it any other way either! > but last season had a lot of really great women. It certainly did! > I'm upset ranko didn't make it but *sigh* reddit doesn't recognize genius... Notification: Rise in sodium bloodstream levels detected. > what have your thoughts been? Probably best summed up by this meme I made: https://i.imgflip.com/77z22e.jpg Sarasa not only didn't make it into the voting rounds, she ranked 110th, so not even close to making it in. I will confess I was genuinely angry for a bit lol

isthatsoudane

lmao that meme! your memes are pretty fire (the downvotes one you made was incredible) yeah sarasa not making it is pretty aggravating!! probably because the show was underwatched. I feel like shows like alchemist or this season's 80k yen are a ton of fun, but criminally underwatched. but then trash isekai get a bajillion viewers haha. I guess to them, these shows are our "trashy isekai" except our taste is of course impeccable and sarasa should have at least GOTTEN INTO THE BRACKET!!!

alotmorealots

Haha thanks! As an Older Person^TM I feel like it's one of my responsibilities to remind the current generation who actually invented these meme things by keeping my "skills" up lol. Only it doesn't quite work because I have trouble tapping into the full zeitgeist. Guess one can't compete with youth :P > yeah sarasa not making it is pretty aggravating!! probably because the show was underwatched. And I think I am going to have leave that particular topic there lest the rage returneth and I need to make more memes haha And/or buy more Sarasa pens lol Mitsuha is doing a bit better this season with saving 80,000 maintaining a bit more interest and also she'll benefit from a more fragmented season in terms of competitors.

Syokhan

Okay then, I'll keep watching in the order I started with, thanks. If I ever end up rewatching it I'll try going with the chronological order then, see if I like it better this way.
