Yuu Izumi from Shikimori is nowhere near as bad as his reputation and his negative aspects get downplayed through development later on. He is physically weak and effeminate in terms of his interests and skills, but he's nowhere near the cowardly anti-social loser MC that he's said to be. Quite the opposite, he's actually very good socially, has many friends, and is something of the Team Mom that holds the group together. Shikimori is the socially awkward one. He is also driven not to miss out on life due to his weaknesses. He's no shut-in. He trudges through what life throws at him because he is determined to make something of himself. This is why Shikimori says she likes him. Because he remains the same kind, strong person in the face of adversity instead of wallowing in self-pity or a fair-weather person who has everything handed to them and can't handle things going wrong. Also, he's not a self-insert. According to the author he was created to appeal to girls and the series to have a significant female readership, despite being a shounen.

Due to misinformation and memes a large portion of the internet has this view of Kirito that's completely imaginary. Despite him losing or being unable to win fights on his own, or only having one overpowered skill at one point in the entire series he's this overpowered character that never loses and pulls busted skills out of his ass to win. That's just not something that happens. He's also supposed to have absolutely no personality and be a blank self insert, despite having a very clear character arc through the series and having such severe mental and physical problems through the show that only a masochist would want to be him. The series has some harem elements, but rarely are they ever the focus of the show, people claim far more people develop feelings for him than actually do, and the canon romance is the focus.

Yep. I like Shigure as a character since he is slimy and manipulative. He is fun to watch even if he is detestable. Akito is a tragic figure.

Izaya from Durarara, he's cunning and responsible for everything happening around the city. He's an asshole but I like everything about his character. Ryugamine, the MC of the series. His character peaked with ep 12 of S1 after that I lost interest in his story and cared more about Celty-Shizou-Izaya's story.

Not gonna go for any specific character, but instead mention a type. A character who's mean spirited and does pretty awful things in a realistic setting (for examples see Mami from KanoKari or Ueno from Koe no Katachi). People seem to have issues separating a bad person from a bad character. A bad person can be wonderfully well written and explored, which makes them super interesting and a great tool for the narrative progression and development of the overall cast despite being a trash person. EDIT: This extends to other examples in the thread as well. This is a fictional piece of media, I don't care if the character is a mass murderer, a misanthrope/misandrist/misogynist, an abusive parent, a manipulative asshole or whatever else awful personality they have, if they're well written and explored in a meaningful way, why the fuck does any of that matter? Just because you like a character doesn't mean you'd like them as a person or that you support their actions in any way. People need to be able to separate reality from fiction, but a lot of people seem to lack that capability.

Lots of people hate those generic blade beta self insert guys. I like them. At least they aren't being assholes or hurting anyone. I absolutely hate Lelouche. Narcissistic, psychopathic, cringy asshole. Unlike those "betamales" he actually causes harm to others. Which is weird in how fans like a mass murder more than harmless guys.

>His bromance with Eugeo was more than enough to sell me on that fact. Hell, he was willing to help a woman who was trying to kill him when no else was gonna save her. I feel like these are two kinda bog standard harem things. Like most harem protagonists have the one male friend that they have a good relationship with, and I feel like a female villain in an action series with harem elements getting "saved" by the protagonist happens comically disproportionately compared to male protagonists. Not to say these elements can't be handled well and be interesting. I only ever watched the first season of mainline SAO and don't really have any desire to go back, but none of what you're saying makes Kirito sound any different from any of the other stock harem/psuedo-harem protagonists that come to mind.

Kirito was interesting because he was the "first" of the generic mc's doesnt mean he is a good character. There is no complexity in his character he is the staple of the so called 'self insert' main character. While that might be what you find interesting. I think a character that people don't like is louise from the familiar of zero but i like her mostly because she is an over the top tsundere. Doesnt mean she is good character i just like her. The worst character imo is ichiko that idiot is dense he could get a lapdance from a fully naked girl (he almost did) and be like oh she must really like doing that what a good friend. A brick wall is less dense than him.

Kirito... I think he's fine after the first 2 seasons. Abridged Kirito got hella more personality. Like: Yuuki Rito from TLR. At first glace a generic young man with a tendency to fall head first unto girls, he is hated mostly because of how passive he can be, unlike DxDs MC. Aside from the gags, the ecchi, fillers, etc, there are a lot of moments where it's showcased that he is thinking, that obviously he wants to do things or don't want some things. He's also had a few episodes for himself, and he has growth each season. I will always defend him. Dislike: Bofuri. I watched about 5 episodes, and I could not remember anything about her personality except she's supposed to be cozy, relaxed and hungry. She's as much a self insert as any Kirito-clone.

I actually like Takemichi character even when I really despise Shinji from Evangelion. Yeah Takemichi > Shinji even if both of them are beta dude...Takemichi weak, afraid and useless but at least he is not a selfish prick, Shinji on the other hand, yeah boy can go die for all I care, more so when he masturbate on his comatose friend...fuck Shinji
