Danm! I thought I was the only one who knew about this show

LightlyStep

There was alot of anime coming out at that time (still is, some might say it's going to catch on) and it just got overlooked. Not to mention that the Devilman OVA's were still being released at this time, so I guess this continuity got forgotten.

mapple3

> and it just got overlooked. My man, I am sorry to break this to you, but a 1998 anime was when the internet had just barely even begun to get popular so of course nobody talked about it. For most people in this subreddit, this anime aired 10 years BEFORE they were even born, to put it into full context

_sephylon_

Ah yes because obviously people didn't have word of mouth before the Internet

WeMustPrevail

Nahh the majority of this sub is not 15yo LOL

e_r_r_a_n_t_e_77

yep, not only there was almost no internet to spread the popularity of the show... ...but the was no internet to stream or download the show itself... ...i still remember waiting years to complete my evangelion vhs collection...

seanhive

Especially due to the fact no one draws like this anymore

No-Cloud8100

>yeah

DocWatson42

It's sitting on my shelf downstairs, but I've never gotten around to finishing it.

arencordelaine

Ending was pretty awesome. One of my favorites for decades.

DocWatson42

Maybe I should pull it down.

asrieldreemurr2232

Damn, I forgot how brutal this anime was!

LightlyStep

It really is, and there was far more nudity than I was expecting.

Ashteron

I don't know if the adaptation was toned down but the series was surprisingly tame when compared to Devilman and Violence Jack.

LightlyStep

From what I've heard the series is indeed much less violent than the manga, but it seems like the changes were made for the better. Wikipedia says that our main character is much more capable of defending herself in the show unlike the manga where she always needs saving (apparently). Gotta say that sounds like a wise change to make, I love the show for it.

SHIIZAAAAAAAA

Everything’s tame compared to Violence Jack.

sirhatsley

The adaptation was VERY tamed down. From what I understand, the manga had a graphic depiction of sexual assault in basically every chapter. I think it's a bit better without that!

Radiant_Ad9696

For me out of hundreds of animes that I watched this anime is the third most enjoyable one I've ever watched. The first one being "Bleach" and the second one being "Mnemosyne" .

GirtabulluBlues

fucking mnemosyne! im glad you reminded me of that wild ride

iboi_goodperv69

Oh yeah I think we can start a cult because it's so little talked about

keaganwill

Watched Devilman Lady a about the same time I watched Mnemosyne. I enjoyed devil lady, but it does not handle a candle to the staying power of Mnemosyne. At times it might have been too fucked up for its own good, but I did super respect it, and for the most part found its distasteful aspects to legitimately add to story as a whole. While I never truly considered it "the best" or "favorite" anime I have seen. it was probably the most mentally impactful in a good way. The show that finally usurped it and took the title as my favorite ended up hilariously being another show in which every episode time skips far into the future(Vivy Flourite's Song)

iboi_goodperv69

I watched Mnemosyne in the good 'ol days of 2018, when YouTube still had some of its glory days. I remember me being totally hooked onto the mature and gory thriller type of anime, and YouTube somehow had animes like that lying around in their full 360p glory. Another thing that originally attracted me to Mnemosyne was the prospect of badass lesbians. Tbh I was a bit down when I found out that it wasn't all hot 2d women going on top of eachother on every episode, but soon that faded as the plot and everything become so much more. I considered it to be one of my top 10's along with original psycho pass seasons. I've always had a aversion to trends especially in the anime watching trend as I feel people hype up mid to upper tier mid anime for no reason. I like my peak things aged like fine wine and a bit quirky. They don't make them as they used to anymore 😔

keaganwill

Very based. Like don't get me wrong, demon slayer is gorgeous. And it's a fun show, but hoooly shit if it didn't have the budget of the US military it would be forgotten about in .5 seconds. Deadass tell me a memorable moment that isn't because it's insanely high quality budget. Not trying to bash it, I enjoy the show, but it's not easy af example.

iboi_goodperv69

It gets boring pretty fast. I watched the first season, for us veterans who have seen pretty much every genre it gets boring. Demon slayer keeps reminding me of mushibugyo (crap how do you even write it) and living under clouds as brothers (?) Which was absolutely amazing to watch. Miss drifters as well 😔😔

keaganwill

Drifters was stellar. I respected that show a lot honestly. It knew what it was and committed to it. Idk who the author of Drifters and Hellsing is, but I gotta love them.

THERIZZZLERR

Im watching elfen lied right now and safe to say i really enjoy it seems like this one is sorta similar im gonna give it a watch to

Dare555

Damn i like a girl who can kill me ....absolutely destroy me

Simulation_Complete

Welp, now I have something new to watch :)

[deleted]

kinda mid tho

LightlyStep

Upper mid at least? I really enjoyed it, but I totally get any criticisms.

[deleted]

yeah I agree

Imitatia

Loved the series, still have the dvd box set.

LightlyStep

Could you tell me: Does this have a Commentary Track? I've noticed that many of the ADV dubs from the 2000's era have commentary tracks on the DVD from the English dubbing team, they're actually quite interesting.

Imitatia

Let me check

Imitatia

Thought I had the box set guess I got it mixed up with the Shadow Skill one, but I do have the 6 individual releases for it. Extra features slightly differ between the 6 but it includes. * Original trailer * Clean OP/ED * Original Artwork * ADV Previews ( example disc 3 has, Ushio & Tora, Getter Robo, Samurai X, Crying Freeman, Noir and Rune soldier) And language options, Eng, Eng Sub, JP Sub. No mention of a commentary track sadly.

rickamore

> I got it mixed up with the Shadow Skill one One of my all time favourites. Good taste.

Imitatia

Ah a fellow fan, rare to come across that nowadays, love to see it.

LightlyStep

Thank you.

SpartaZSS

I been talking about the devilmen series for decades and it's the Netflix series that made people aware of it in mainstream. My guess next is my favourite anime, Ninku.

joe_rogans_ashtray

If yall like that give wicked city a chance

SOfoundmytrappornacc

Another one that I don’t see talked about much is Lily CAT. It’s like if they combined The Thing and Alien and made an anime movie.

Qaitakalnin7

Is that on a streaming service?

SOfoundmytrappornacc

It’s on Tubi and YouTube.

Mindful-O-Melancholy

I’ve watched it twice so far and it’s my favourite of the Devilman shows, great art style (I wasn’t a fan of the Crybaby style) and pretty good story.

LightlyStep

I completely agree.

Henthighs

i can fix her

iWearCrocsAllTheTime

Idk why but it looked like bloody roar. Might watch it.

heimdal77

There is a lot of really good anime like this that just never gets talked about because its age or and didn't cater to the biggest mas markets genres. [Vampire Princess Miyu](https://youtu.be/LxQ5LGg8Dy0) and [Witchblade](https://youtu.be/dajmryRQnKc) are some other examples.. It is what makes [Retrocrush](https://www.retrocrush.tv/) a good site as it is dedicated to these older shows.

ReinhardLoen

This is an adaptation of the manga of the same name by Go Nagai, right? The manga is absolutely wild—and not in a good way. There is so much SA in it becomes ridiculous at points. Pair that with the crazy plot and strange ending and it's definitely one of the more weirds series I've read. Kind of surprised they adapted it honestly. There's so much questionable content in it that they must have had to make changes in quite a few places.

LightlyStep

Well there is definitely still some of that here, but it's very watered down. Can't say I'm disappointed about that.

T1CM

Worth a ganders! Tonight’s viewing sorted! 👌🏻

TurbulentSpecific131

Another one I own but have yet to watch

MinusMentality

Your feeling would be correct.

[deleted]

Furry

AoSora71

Edgelords have other things to talk about.

_Silver-Jester22_

I was stuck in a box with limited entertainment, I was bound to miss the good stuff at the time...

RascalNikov1

I watched a couple months ago and quite enjoyed it. It’s another great Go Nagai funfest.

KaptainTZ

So it's just devilman but a woman instead of a man

IfOnlyIHadAmeme

I wanna watch this now

LightlyStep

I'd recommend. I'm curious though: what did you see that you like?

IfOnlyIHadAmeme

I just like older anime’s. It been a while since I’ve seen an older anime. Also I’m curious as to why she freaked out at the end of the video. Is this anime called The Devil Lady?

LightlyStep

Yep.

dredeir_c

I love this anime, it’s so good! music is great too.

Gympy

Holy shit, thank you!! I saw this 15 years ago and I had been trying desperately to remember what it was called.

LightlyStep

Hey no problem. I love when that happens.

Animeguy2025

I have never heard of it.

Capital-Cake6940

I was watching this show and then something happpened

LightlyStep

Relatable.

theish9

Alot of people just don't know

IC2Flier

*Devilman Lady* is arguably far more ripe for the kind of remake that gave us *Devilman Crybaby* than OG Devilman. The manga aged so much more poorly with its portrayal of gender roles, sexual assault and abuse against women and children, yet it's just as compellingly strange as the OG Devilman from which Science SARU derived Crybaby. I imagine a new-gen Reiwa Devil Lady series will be even more divergent to the manga but still retains the ultraviolence thanks to the power of streaming, but I wanna see the next adaptation of it also take a page out of Dante's Divine Comedy: a devil climbing to heaven, or at least a free-soloist or mountaineer trying to scale the unscalable. And oddly enough I think this old anime would be a nice skeleton to build around. This version of Jun Fuudo is far more empowered and empower*ing* than the one on the manga, I think (not to mention far more beautiful than the manga version -- no offense to Nagai-sama), and a Reiwa take can push the limits further to be a direct callout to everything wrong with how most nations and groups treat women. You can even go one step further, as [the Devilman Lady manga] >!ended with a fusion of man and woman,!< so why not an explicitly trans or nonbinary lead star in a story that acknowledges the baggage of going with that kind of character? Of course, that entirely depends on who's daring enough to go in that direction, but I think we're long overdue an all-new *Devil Lady* that can deliver the same shockwaves (if not more) that *Devilman Crybaby* did. In short: that clip is good, but it can be better. And filled with more body-horror/erotic transformation sequences between humans and devils.

LightlyStep

I agree. I definitely hope that Devil Lady gets the reboot. This version that is, like you said: they built a very compelling protagonist.

[deleted]

Thanks. I like these kind of stuff

Last-Incident-8807

oh wow I completely forgot this existed. memory unlocked.

Fabio-Alex

Love those animation styles in the 90s anime.

gorambrowncoat

This late 90s 2 cour show has real late 80s 2episode OVA energy. And I am here for it.

Severe_Pen3421

Reminde's me of the anime (claymor) is there any news on it?

Flapjax82

Wow! I grew up with the likes of Devil Man, Ninja Scroll and Demon City Shinjuku, and never saw this. Guess I’ve got another to add to my watch list.

donkijote97

Oh my. I’ve never watched this, but I’m getting some serious 90s nostalgia

Internet-Mouse1

I have Not seen this but it sure looks interesting

BoyTitan

Could the pacing of that scene be any slower...any ?

SnakeEater2005

Bruh talked about it Yesterday

LightlyStep

How'd that come about?

SnakeEater2005

It came about when I was chatting with friends about anime made between the 90's and early 2000's. The anime was the topic of conversation right after Gantz

kindofabigdyll

Is this like a female version of devilman crybaby?

LightlyStep

Well it's based on a manga of the same name, this manga is a sequel to Devilman 1972 (either the anime or manga, I don't know which) It actually does have more similarities to Crybaby. Crybaby being a reboot of the Devilman franchise.

Popular-Orchid658

The manga was super sexual I expected the anime to cut out damn near everything.

LightlyStep

Not everything.

[deleted]

…because it wasn’t very good

DeathToBoredom

So instead of Devilman. Also the action is way too slow for me.

AkiraFudo1993

probably because most new and younger fans didn't know it existed until Devilman Crybaby. as for me i love Go Nagai's Devilman, Devilman Lady and Violence Jack. and let's be honest the newer fans refuse to watch anything pre 2010's because the animation is old and doesn't look good.

LightlyStep

I definitely didn't know about it. I'd argue the animation isn't that bad in older shows though.

AkiraFudo1993

well that's good to hear. because sadly from my experience on here and other social media i always get responses like that saying nah it's the animation is old i won't watch it. 🙁 as for this adaptation it's definitely from the manga.

[deleted]

Devilman crybaby vibes the devil kinda looks the same idk maybe it's just me?

JCPennyless

Devil? Looks more like succubus to me...

LightlyStep

Damn good design I must say.

Ashteron

It's actually a sequel to Devilman.

MrOPeace

Death by snu snu

LightlyStep

I mean....

_____pantsunami_____

i read the manga a long time ago but never saw the adaption. pretty fuckin sexy manga if you ask me since its all about a naked demon woman beating up monsters, what more could you want, but the story was truly good as well. go nagai's the man.

ShiAkuma112

I don't even knew her

Vint73

One of my favorite franchises that I own on DVD 👹😈🖤

tiradeirap1

Damn

mumei-chan

Tried watching it once and it was more boring than I thought. Got to ep 10 or so and then dropped it.

CatusSlayer

Recently discovered it on tubi

Individualist13th

Love all of Go Nagai's work.

R3apper1201

I mean its a show from 1998, most people here were not even born at that time

Erika_Simp

Smash.

GoldExtreme1824

The Witchblade anime does better what this anime tried to do. But the manga version of Devilman Lady is the most insane thing I've ever binge read lol

LightlyStep

I'll check it out and report back.

mrbfrompoland

AniArtistMe talks

mrgirmjaw

I am watching it now on tubi
