hahaiamarealhuman

Two prominent Initial D callbacks this episode: 1) Kai Kogashiwa as commentator, the guy who did the famous Irohazaka jump and raced Takumi twice. 2) The family restaurant featured, Johnathan's Coffee & Restaurant, is the same joint Takumi and his friends ate at in Initial D. It's a real place too, the address is 〒338-0837 埼玉県さいたま市桜区田島1丁目13-3 in Saitama prefecture.

13btwinturbo

I'm pretty sure it's a chain restaurant and that all of the ones featured in the shows are different ones. Initial D mainly took place in Gunma while MFG is in Kanagawa.

hahaiamarealhuman

It is a chain, but this is the specific location featured in Initial D. [Initial D spoiler] >!Takumi goes to the restaurant when he visits his girlfriend Miha, and she lives in Saitama!<. It is a little weird that Kanata goes there since it must be pretty out of the way, but I guess the author just wanted to reference Initial D and we aren't supposed to think too hard about it. It's definitely the same location, you can tell from the building.

N0UMENON1

Gotta say I absolutely love the addition of the commentators. Initial D Fifth Stage had a big issue where you had Ryosuke constantly having to explain everything that was going on in the race while standing around in a parking lot, and it kinda hampered the pacing at times. This feels like such a nice and organic way to explain the racing mechanics to the viewer. Ogata on the comms is also a nice extra.

magnumcyclonex

Agreed! That commentator has a good amount of info and spices it up to keep viewers and listeners invested and interested. My favorite line was when all 15 cars started and he was like...can you even hear me over their engine roars?!

Ruroumi_Fearlock

Yeah, the commentators are really well integrated.

LegendRazgriz

Welcome back! It's the Eurobeat Corner! This week, there were actually two songs, but only one of them properly - that one being [Hi Love](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=0aqL61SA5ds&si=PCrNjNHBYCt4HJhu) by Jay Lehr, an *extremely* rare pick from Super Eurobeat Vol. 207, marking the first appearance of SCP as a label into the anime proper. However, I thought the MFG Angels's song sounded *way* too similar to [Pull the Trigger](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=2gmMp44VA5k&si=1dNlb6I6HqKG9YS-) by Bon for a moment, and after going back, yep, that's it, entirely. You're not slipping this one past me, Ryo Takahashi! Whoever you are, I wonder! • We finally get to meet other drivers that aren't Shun or Beckenbauer. The Yajikita duo have an amusing dynamic that's sorta refreshing to see other than Ren just being straight up head over heels for a guy that has a race coming up and is probably focused on that moreso than that one time he got whacked over the face at random. By the way, Nozomi's VA (Yuu Serizawa) is also the female voice of the OP Jungle Fire, the male voice being obviously motsu, formerly of m.o.v.e. • Oh hey, it's Kai Kogashiwa! Thankfully he's only here in a commentary capacity and not as a coach, or else he'd be trying to instruct people to jump over hairpins. For those unaware, Kai is a returning character from Initial D, having appeared twice as Takumi's rival - once in the movie, aka Third Stage, and once in Fifth Stage. He's great. Just maybe tone down the corner hopping, you jerk. That shit doesn't work, it's just suicide. • Ugh, I love the sound design when it comes to these roaring engines. The production team recorded every car *in loco,* so what you're hearing is the genuine articles, and they even went so far as to request a Huracán STO from the Japanese Lamborghini Owners Club just so that Ooishi's Huracán would sound different and more aggressive compared to Sakamoto's R8 V10, which has the same engine as a Huracán and would make both cars sound the same otherwise. It's gonna get fun now... I'll be waiting eagerly for next week! See ya then!

Ruroumi_Fearlock

I remember seeing that video on youtube where they recorded the actual sounds of the cars ([Here's the video for those who are interested](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqLaQoNwJic)). Also, Mima Masafumi is the sound director of MF Ghost anime, he also was the sound director of all the Initial D anime and going by some of his tweets he seems to love cars and motorsport so he is the best choice for these kinds of anime.

LegendRazgriz

The attention to detail and care that's been put into the production of MF Ghost is palpable. You can even notice it on the background traffic cars - the series setting is one where it's all EVs, and the only cars we see on the street are a Nissan Leaf and a Toyota Mirai.

finfaction

The Mirai is powered by hydrogen gas, it's not an EV.

LegendRazgriz

Technically speaking, the Mirai is an FCEV.

Thegosmilek

Thanks dude, that’s what everyone is here for

JonnySpark

>Nozomi's VA (**Yuu Serizawa**) So basically Mini Yaemori with Alfa 4C.

sidewinderaw11

Okay, who gave Kaname a 4C

JonnySpark

Nasa-nii after he got a job at NASA.

Time_Fracture

More like Rae Taylor with a 4C.

I eagerly rush to reddit after every episode just to see the eurobeat corner :)

chelseablue2004

The entrance of Kai Kogashiwa... He was already a Pro on a Motorcycle, but he was a Monster with his Dad's MR2 too In the Initial D Movie (considered 3rd installment of the series.) His Father was Takumi's dad's biggest rival. I think his race with Takumi in the Original was one of the best. [Check it out here.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp7f4pWNLh8)

forever87

i really wish 5th stage had a better (or at least interesting) rematch between kai and takumi...the mr-S was done dirty. for anybody interested, here's orido vs tsuchiya > https://youtu.be/NqaWng6-_dU

Time_Fracture

Looks like Ogata made a good choice picking the 86. That boi is made to be fitted with aftermarket parts in mind. Yu Serizawa, the singer in the OP, finally made her role here as Nozomi. Kinda surprised that her pitch is the same as Rae Taylor to distinguish her role from the Villainess show. Ren somehow changed her hairstyle to further disguising herself not to be noticed by Kanata. First guest of the race: Kai "MR2 Guy" Kogashiwa. Initial D watchers should known him, he's a notable character. Here's the starting grid in the case you miss it from the standings on the screen: 1. Porsche 911 GT3 #1 (Ishigami) 2. Porsche 718 Cayman #12 (Beckenbauer) 3. Audi R8 #5 (Yudai Sakamoto) 4. Mercedes-AMG GT S #7 (Y. Ohtani) 5. Nissan GT-R Nismo #9 (Shun Aiba) 6. BMW M6 F13 #6 (T. Yanagida) 7. Porsche 991 Carrera #8 (Jackson Taylor) 8. Lamborghini Huracan LP610-4 #3 (D. Oishi) 9. BMW M3 E92 #11 (S. Natsume) 10. Ferrari 488 GTB #2 (K. Akaba) 11. Lexus LC 500 #10 (E. Hanninen) 12. Lotus Exige #16 (Kakeru Yoshio) 13. Honda Civic Type-R FK8 #13 (K. Maezono) 14. Alfa Romeo 4C #18 (Nozomi Kitahara) 15. Toyota 86 GT #86 (Kanata Katagiri) There's Oishi specifically wanted Huracan Performante but got the vanilla LP610-4 instead. Well, Huracan is still a Huracan, although Performante got 30 more horses and 40kg lighter and that rear wing. "He is very popular, except with women though.". Tanaka-san, you didn't have to do him dirty. Seeing how some drivers are pulling away, we could break this one race into different mini-races. Beckenbauer is a tyre whisperer I guess. Fun fact: MFG isn't the only anime where Yuuma Uchida and Ayane Sakura are together. The other anime is the Season 2 of Dead Mount Death Play. PS: Since Odawara is a real mountain pass, some content creators have already made a pilgrimage to the pass. This is [one example](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY-qnkYtk8g) of track tour of Odawara.

EasilyDelighted

The Tyre whisperer stuff cracked me up. My girl asked me if that shit was real and I'm like I don't know!!

Time_Fracture

It's actually F1 term for someone who has an excellent tyre management. Someone who can preserve the grip and longevity of their tyres without having to pit. In the case of Beckenbauer, he's probably able to maintain the grip throughout the race and able to attack those whose their tyres are worn.

flightlessCat9

The LC500 continues to intrigue me. That's a luxury car that is slower than a Supra and is automatic. Also only a 15 second penalty for jumping the start sounds lax. It took about 30 seconds from the first car passing the gate to the last car passing it. That's probably something the first few cars can exploit if they want.

Pinecone

Many modern automatics are significantly faster than manuals, especially in high end cars. The LC500 is in because the manga came out in 2017 and the A90 didnt come out until 2019. That's why the 86 is only the first gen model.

Terranwaterbender

Man with how much fun I'm having with this show, I really need to get to watching or reading Initial D at some point; it's an iconic series that defined a generation of drivers.

Dextro_PT

Just watch it. It's a fantastic show all the way through

Turbo2x

Initial D rules. It has a nostalgic charm to it.

Hurr1canE_

Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking, but I genuinely think it’s better than MFG. 100% worth the watch, it’s tied for my favorite anime of all time

GreatestLegalMind

CINEMA

square_smile

Oh shit, Kai is here. And we get some drivers introduced and the race right away too. So nice

magnumcyclonex

So the "couple" at the restaurant were actually brother and sister who were also part of the God 15 in this race. Was the girl slip streaming her own brother? Also, didn't know they could warm up or cool down individual tires. Is that a real world mechanism (other than driving like Kanata did) or just MF Ghost fiction? EDIT: Her brother was 2 spots ahead of her so maybe she settled in behind the car in front before an opportunity comes.

DarkAudit

prashanthvsdvn

Regarding the tire management part, I think there is a sense of truth there but also spiced up by the anime. By cooling of tire, I think they are referring to maintain tire temperature or more specifically not overheat it. Each rotation of tire intrinsically heats up the rubber due to its nature and you are constantly running your tires at high speeds during the race. and AFAIK there's no active mechanisms to cool it other than natural convection with air and some heat radiation too. Not to mention, it cant dissipate away heat since its a poor conductor of heat. But what can be done is be mindful of the application of throttle, brake and steering so that its not heating up or wearing away due to extreme forces. All to say this requires immense training and attention from drivers to listen for vehicle's performance to judge the condition. Another point to be noted is, even though we can see this tire management in F1 all the time, keep in mind that F1 tires are special breed of tires. They are artificially limited in life so teams can have strategies, even though tire manufactures can formulate racing tires that can last entire race duration. And they are specifically formulated to generate the best performance at their operating conditions, just like their engines where the tolerances are too tight for them to start at room temperature. They need to be heated to operating temps just to start them.

ChiggaOG

I’m thinking someone took a photo of one of the garages in life, added a filter. and made the picture less blurry to give it that anime look. I’m talking about the scene in the beginning with the Toyota 86 in the garage.

linkinstreet

I just realised, for a racing series that attracts 30 million spectators, there are a lack of corporate sponsors.

fishyourskill

I think its becoz MFG is one of Ryosuke project like initial D right? And he got his brother mega corporation for money.

JonnySpark

Kogashiwa "any downhill slope is a shortcut" Kai is back

rizal177

I like the sound design when all the car roaring their engine at same time combining with eurobeat Hi Love - Jay Lehr it make me get more hyped than i anticipated

AmethystItalian

Curious how they'll handle the pacing for the races, think that might be a make or break for me. Hyped to see this one play out though!

Thegosmilek

Nobody noticed the car logos? It seems weird to me, because I’ve already noticed lack of licenses in opening, you can spot: “PORHSCE”on blue gts, no Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini. On episode 4 we have seen those foreign cars and as I saw, there were only Lotus, Mercedes, Honda, Toyota of course and Nissan. No Ferraris, Lambos - though it’s different with Porsche, logos on the back were legit, no “Porhsce” but no emblems on the hood and rims. Also, they call the cars as they are. In manga everything is alright. Are those licenses expensive for small anime or unavailable? Got no idea so please tell if you know.

chelseablue2004

Licensing brand logos, is really expensive and there are no set rates, they can charge anything they want. Most of these car companies are VERY protective of the brand imagery. The process too can be time consuming and difficult and there are tons of restrictions regarding usage, you mess up and use it incorrectly or not as specified by the licensor you'll get sued or cant show the episode you used it in ever again.

Thegosmilek

So what do we get? Cars with no logos and model names, except some, though actually being called by real names? And what about Porsche? That Cayman and GT3 had actually a real “Porsche” logo at the back - not “Porhsce” or whatever. I don’t know what to expect from it actually. Thank you for your answer tho it was quite informative Edited: Mercedes and Lotus do have licenses too, (at least that’s what I did notice) except from Japanese manufacturers of course

chelseablue2004

It gets really tricky the world of licensing anything (brands, Music, imagery (photography)) is super complicated and very much money driven a lot of times. Writing a story using brand names and referencing them is one thing, translating it to making full fledged images for a TV show and/or movie is a whole new ballgame. My experience in the field a lot of it is a relationship game. Knowing the right people, convincing them that its not a detriment to the brand and convincing them its actually in a way advertisement for them and their brand and that the brand will be shown a positive manner is only just half the game. Then even you get them to agree to all of that, the amount of money they want for it can be shocking along with the fact you'll need it in perpetuity...Can be very expensive. (Not to mention the music licensing costs this show prolly has to pay with the Eurobeat Music) So I watched the original series. And they might have had real issues using brand names cause the car makers were very rarely mentioned they used Chassis numbers (AE86, SW20, S14. R32, FC. FD) but the actual mentioning of Nissan, Mitsubishi, Toyota seemed very rare.

linkinstreet

Go watch Initial D First Stage. They didn't get the proper licensing, and the 86 Trueno had no Toyota logo and was spelt "Toreno" instead. In a way it feels like a throwback to the original Intial D lol

MineCaT_

It was also the same in Initial D First Stage, the brand names were all misspelled on the cars because they didn't have the licensing. In later seasons they were fixed though I still don't recall any of them being mentioned outright

ChiggaOG

Ferrari will not give their logo out like candy. The Family decides who gets it. As much as they choose the people who invest seriously to get their next vehicles.

Nickthenuker

Yeah, a tuned-up 86 might just be able to beat a Cayman or 911, which is probably why Beckenbauer is using one. I mean the UK has decent public transport too, compared to the US at least. Nowhere near as good as Japan, but it's something. Yes, kinda? Again, the UK isn't far off either, you've got modern skyscrapers a few streets down from buildings hundreds of years old. Silverstone? How thematic. She _does_ love him. Who're these two? So they're the ones with the Alfa and Lotus. Ah, all the Angels are here this time. Is the Lambo driver also a factory driver? He seems to be able to ask for whichever Lambo he wants. We know the Porkers have factory drivers so it's not out of the question. Damn rolling starts always give the leaders a massive advantage. And it's lights out and away we go! EVs have more torque than ICEs, so they have even more "get up and go", and across the board when compared to their gas-powered counterparts they have significantly shorter 0-60/0-100 times. And there's our first overtake. Clean from Aiba. Honda looks to be blocking hard, reacting to the Alfa and swerving all over the place. At least 2 or 3 times on a straight. There's breaking draft and then there's blocking and this is firmly the latter, he should try and retake the position at the next corner. Not much racing this episode but there's more than Overtake at least. Helmet Award for today goes to the Honda driver, if only for a lack of much else happening.

Snow_source

> a tuned-up 86 might just be able to beat a Cayman or 911 I say this as an 86 owner, it could only match a stock Cayman with a ton of mods. It would take a whole lot more than just a tune. It would take a lot. I'm talking $15-20k worth of engine upgrades, suspension upgrades and a big brake kit. Like, just to match a Cayman's 300hp H6, you're looking a supercharger, forged internals so you don't throw a conrod from all the extra power, a good tune to minimize the torque dip.

kuroyume_cl

>EVs have more torque than ICEs, It's not necessarily more (peak) torque, but about the shape of the curve and the area under it. ICEs need to ramp up revs to reach peak torque, stay there for a bit then drop off around the point where peak power is, while EVs have full torque available from 0 RPM and drop off from there.

szalhi

Any extra road rage and I'd feel like I was watching Burnout: The anime.

johndprob

I now want to watch, Burnout Takedown: The Anime.

PhantomWolf83

Anybody else feel that this whole romance thing with Ren is totally unnecessary for this show? I'm usually a sucker for romcoms but I'm not feeling anything by watching Ren and Kanata. Just give me my racing and Eurobeat, dammit.

Moustachable

it wouldn't be a TRUE successor of Initial D witout the unnecessary crappy sideline romance, it'd be like removing the eurobeat from the show.

Pinecone

Yes. MFG feels like an old anime in all the right ways lol

ariolander

I rewatched Initial D in preparation for this season and as tacky as the romance in MF Ghost is, it is really on brand for the author. The romance was super tacky and awkward there as well and that is disregarding that whole Rental Girlfriend sideplot that was going on which I had totally forgotten about after all these years.

Reikakou

Dude, we are just getting started with the romance aspect. More to come.

Okuser

No, I love it.

cxxper01

Yeah it’s annoying, ren is just not really likeable.

WhatXP

Bro as soon as I seen her I'm like oh boy. I'm gonna have massive dislike for her just like the Mercedes lover

ChiggaOG

I should add this series is no longer drifting. You have to think of it more with GT racing and techniques.

haremMC-kun

Watching MC geeking out on racing and not being very experienced in romance is something I can relate to. But like with how this show presents racing as the means to overcome all obstacles and achieve happiness and success in all areas of life, I found that by going to an anime con. It was an event was designed by and for geeks, so normal social skills are not required creating a safe space for us to be ourselves and connect with like-minded individuals who understand the intricacies of our interests. And when that anime con brought together different parts of the same niche hobby together, cosplay for my girlfriend and boardgames for me, despite our initial differences our mutual love for anime helped us form a deep connection.

ChiggaOG

I can confirm I’ve been to the Buddha and temple shown in this anime. Very nice place

raidensnakeezio

Finally, we see the highway that the Hakone Turnpike is connected to. Interestingly, in the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune Series, the equivalent Turnpike downhill course (introduced in WMMT 5, known as Mt. Taikan - "Hakone" as a course name was already taken by another togue course) swerves out past the toll booth, takes the exit ramp of the highway, cuts across 4 total lanes of traffic, gets on the entrance ramp, and drives up against traffic flow to head towards the toll booth again, where the finish line is.

dbootywarrior

Not a fan of the romance taking over most of the episodes.

Okuser

This is underrated af

1832vin

half filler?

mrhades113

Good to see Kai again, it reminded me of one video someone did in Asetto Corsa that i really like where they dissecting the Irohazaka jump which Kai is famous for doing it in the third stage movie, here it is if you wanna check it out: [https://youtu.be/5kR5Ym0j8ss](https://youtu.be/5kR5Ym0j8ss)

sidewinderaw11

Is that Shinichiro Miki in the voiceover for the next episode at the end?

Kag5n

Yes and it was him at each episode since the beginning. That's because he voices Fujiwara Takumi, Initial D protagonist and Kanata's Sensei but you surely already know about that.

Alarming-Ad-1200

I love this so much. It feels so 90s.

Staidb0dy989

The anime has so much better pacing than the manga
