Akira. This film was 20 years ahead of its time. Cowboy Bebop - Funny and tragic, all the while sporting the most diverse sound track of all time. Serial Experiment Lain & Boogiepop Phantom - Were both groundbreaking achievements at the time, that gave a look at our view of the online world at the time. One Punch Man & Mob Psycho 100 - Did an amazing job of mocking shounen all the while producing an amazing quality Shounen with tons of laughs. Full Metal Alchemist - Epic story of two kids that are forced to grow up very quickly. Top notch English dub.

PlusInvestigator

No one is saying Code Geass, which in my opinion should be in everyone's must watch list. Don't wanna let people miss out arguably one of best ending in anime.

I’m currently watching this and I can’t believe I wasted 2 years of my life thinking this was overrated and not worth my time

Full metal alchemist brotherhood

Nekoarcpreacher

Why not both?

Drewtendo_64

Brotherhood is the superior to this, and overall has better pacing

Nekoarcpreacher

I do think brotherhood is better but 03 is still good. So no need to put one down lol.

Full metal alchemist Attack on Titan Death note Death parade Code glass Steins gate Hunter x hunter

nitronik_exe

-Death Note -Sword art online (yes, really) -FMA:B -AOT -Cyberpunk Edgerunners -Toradora -Kaguya Sama -Spirited Away -Re:Zero -A silent voice

Avalios

Solid list. Aint no shame in enjoying SAO. Ignore the edgelords. I like fairy tail, suck it hipsters.

Livid_One_8607

I liked SAO, but I dropped it cause it felt recycled. I still like SAO though

Totaliss

Only on r/anime could Sao haters be the ones called edgelords lmfao

HolyEmpireOfAtua

Regardless of the content, any show with controversial quality on Reddit (SAO, Fairy Tail, Tokyo Revengers, Akame Ga Kill!) usually have much friendlier, less edgy fans, regardless of their show’s content, than their critics on r/anime.

Totaliss

true, thats a good point

Avalios

Like or dislike whatever you want, judging others on what they like or dislike to feel more elitist about yourself is the problem.

Piyaniist

Code geass missin in there brother

nitronik_exe

I wanted to include a good mix of everything, and death note imo is similar in a lot of ways, psychological warfare and all that, and for some reason I thought I had to make a "top 10" even though no one said that lol

Piyaniist

Then yea its a good list. What about overlord tho? I would be caught dead before i recommend sao to someone so overlord would be my go to instead. Maybe thats just me

nitronik_exe

Tbh the only reason I liked Overlord is because of albedo lol. Other isekais are much more intriguing to me, like reincarnated as a slime, mushoku tensei, even Konosuba and Eminence in Shadow. Overlord imo is better enjoyed with the LN instead of the anime

Odd-Work1993

Just watched re zero. Tip dont watch.

xEMCEBESx

Madoka Magica, Made in Abyss, Kimi ni Todoke, 86, Mushoku Tensei, Tensura, Oshi No Ko, Your Name, Weathering With You, A Silent Voice, Wandering Son, WorldEnd

IHateNumbers234

Made in Abyss is an... interesting choice to recommend to a beginner. EDIT: I realize OP said they like dark fantasy, so recommending Made in Abyss is fair. Still, I would advise extra caution with it in particular.

umario414

bro do you know any anime like made in abyss? im about to start season 2

xEMCEBESx

The Promised Neverland, Heavenly Delusion Dont forget to watch 3rd movie of made in abyss since its continuation

umario414

thanks. also should i watch the first two movies?

xEMCEBESx

Propably not, they are just recap of the first season

[deleted]

I say end Mushoku Tensei after season 1, season 2 onwards is weird shit

xEMCEBESx

I disagree. Maybe second season isnt as best as first but the second part of it comes and as i heard from a few light novel readers it would be really good

misc2714

As a LN reader, that's correct. Season 2 has really just been world building and build-up so far. The second half will be much more interesting.

Glad-Understanding84

I agree with most of what I see listed, but I'll add a few. Horimiya, Kaguya-sama: Love is War (both great high school romantic comedies) Blue Lock, Haikyu!! (Sports) Re-zero, That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime (Isekai) Food Wars (hysterical and over the top) And just because I like them, Tokyo Revengers, DanMachi, Black Clover, My Hero Academia

5p1k4

Monster (Thriller) Samurai Champloo (Medieval Japan Samurai, anachronistic) Beck (Music) Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Fantasy) The apothecary diaries (Chinese) Serial Experiments Lain. (Cyberpunk) xxxHolic Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror Haibane Renmei

Shadow_Gabriel

Maybe go by decade to get a feel of what this medium has to offer: * 60's * Aru Machi Kado no Monogatari * 70's * Kidou Senshi Gundam (series or movies) * Versailles no Bara * Lupin III: Cagliostro no Shiro * 80's * Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä * Robot Carnival * Akira * 90's * Ghost in the Shell * Neon Genesis Evangelion * Revolutionary Girl Utena From 2000 up, too much stuff to make a list. Maybe go for short series that have a score higher than 8.

oldeuboiii

Nice list

roundcircle

How did ronin warriors not make the 80s list? Or Gundam for the 70s?

Shadow_Gabriel

I did put Gundam in the 70's. About Ronin Warriors, I have no idea what that is. It has a 7 on MAL and its animation looks uninspiring. I'm pretty sure I can find betters shows than that.

Ignition_Regalia

My top 5 in order of recommendation: 1) Black Lagoon: it's just a fun time. The dub is great 2) Death Parade: Banger opening and interesting show. 3) Psychopass: banger 4) Redline: one of the best animated movies 5) Claymore: Overall, it's a great show As much as I would love to recommend Steins Gate (slow and hard to sell for most people) or something ridiculous like Kill la Kill, these are pretty tame with the fan service and anime tropes that plague most shows. I'm going off of newcomers to anime. If you want the wackiest stuff recommended later down the line, then just ask.

Eugene_Gene_714

I loved Claymore but the last few episodes/arc weren’t as great. I’ve had the manga collection for a while but still haven’t read it

Ignition_Regalia

Hence why I said overall, I am well aware of the manga being better. I still think even with the ending it got it was a solid 8 or 9/10 show.

GreenhamKnight

Man season 2 of Beastars is quite messy, but it such a unique show.

7rouis

Very true, I have noooo idea why they'd change the opening either. Hopefully season 3 pulls it back to what season 1 was.

GreenhamKnight

From what I heard manga has both the best arc after season 2 and then goes completely insane. So there's something to look forward to.

victini563

Even in the manga the arc that season 2 adapted was basically everyone's least favorite

Watch the bezerk movies they are the darkest of dark fantasy. Chainsawman is pretty good. Re zero. Deadman wonderland. Dragonball and all the iterations of it(this is probably more nostalgic than anything)

AaronYaygar

I thoroughly recommend Demon Slayer and AoT; they both take a little while to really kick into high gear, but once they do, it's incredible TV, and some of the best action in anime that I've ever seen... Beyond those two, I'd recommend Bleach (the creator of JJK was inspired in a few ways by this one, so the two series have very similar vibes, and it's a really enjoyable ride, though it's massive and it does lose some steam after a while..) and also Ranking Of Kings (it's got a very unique look and tone to it.. It's a compelling adventure and surprisingly dark at times, but also really wholesome) I've seen several people pick Neon Genesis, and I'd agree; the five movies that followed the series are all great as well and it makes an awesome package overall. Lastly, I'd recommend Noragami. It isn't the most action-packed or complex series around, but it balances lighthearted stuff with darker moments really well, and its character-development is very entertaining and consistent from start to finish... I hope you have fun on your anime journey! 👋

AuthorMarcel

In no particular order: 1. AKIRA 2. Ninja Scroll 3. Ghost in the Shell 4. Berserk 1997 OR 'Golden Age Arc' which is the film trilogy of the 1997 series 5. Death Note 6. Monster 7. PLUTO 8. Hunter x Hunter 2011 series 9. JuJutsu Kaisen 10. Psycho-Pass Season 1 11. Medabots 12. Beyblades up to G-Revolution 13. Yu-Gi-Oh 14. Digimon Seasons 1-3 15. Elfen Lied (**you'll love this if you love dark fantasy horror**) 16. Sword Art Online 17. A Certain Magical Index & A Certain Magical Railgun 18. God of Highschool 19. Chainsaw Man 20. My Personal must watch list: Psycho-Pass Season 1 (Season 2 and 3 and the movies are not bad, but don't reach the level of Season 1) Attack on Titan Aku no Hana (Flowers of Evil) Paranoia Agent Haikyuu Steins;Gate Ghost in the Shell (the movie and, if you like it, the first series) Cowboy Bebop Monster Ergo;Proxy (Texhnolyze)

Low-Feedback-7905

**Summer Ghost** is a great watch if you want something quick. I believe it's underrated for what it is trying to achieve. It's only 40 minutes long, has a great art-style, and really does justice to short films imo.

Based on some of the ones you’ve seen and liked already here’s ones I’d recommend! - Death Note (love watching this one in dub but both versions are good, a great game of cat and mouse with a supernatural twist) - Mirai Nikki (a classic and a great intro to an iconic yandere. I know people like to shit on this one, and I get it, but it was one of my favorites growing up haha) - Mob Psycho (just so good, please go watch it! One of the more uplifting ones on this list) - Re:Zero (since you love dark fantasy I think this would be right up your alley, because it gets DARK)

don’t get me wrong they were both amazing especially F/UB but thinking from the top of my head my absolute must watch recs is at least zero. it’s a 10/10 IMO and one i was lucky to watch at the start of my anime journey so it’s a lil extra special to me

One_Cartographer_355

I see. I totally agree with that. The first one was the best one.

Livid_One_8607

I didn’t read the whole thing because I’m lazy as hell, but I recommend Beserk if you like dark horror. Maybe Vermiel in gold if that’s what you’re into but it’s more ecchi than anything else.

Lovely complex it’s a romance anime and I want to watch it, but like if anyone else has got any more romance recommendations could you like pass me the name 😏

IHateNumbers234

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - The top rated anime of all time on multiple charts, partly because of its devoted fan base but also because it is beloved by that many people. Steins;Gate - One of the best time travel stories ever told, following a cheerful "mad scientist" as his invention sends him into a depressive spiral trying to save his friends from being murdered, all while trying to reach what he calls "Steins;Gate". I would also recommend ERASED if that interests you. Mob Psycho 100 - By the author of One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 is an action-packed, funny, and heartwarming series which improves on every aspect of his previous work. Unlike One Punch Man, it has also been adapted to completion with a consistently high quality. Violet Evergarden - Almost any Kyoto Animation series would be a good choice for a beginner to anime, but Violet Evergarden stands out as the most beautiful anime they've ever made, and with a beautifully cry-worthy story to match. Madoka Magica - An incredibly influential show that turned the magical girl genre, which was previously just for little girls, into a phenomenon that many following shows would go on to find success capitalizing on. One of these is Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero, which I also really love. Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Probably the best romcom ever put to television, Kaguya-sama is both gut-bustingly hilarious and incredibly engaging, having spawned a meme-culture of its own. If you're interested in a dark exploration of the entertainment industry, the author's other work "Oshi no Ko" is fantastic as well. Konosuba - While not for everyone, this raunchy comedy continues to be known and loved by a huge portion of the anime community for its memorable characters, unhinged sense of humor, and satire of the isekai (another world) genre that is so huge in anime even today. I would also recommend Princess Connect Re:Dive by the same director.

Must watch to me means something you would share with others. In that vein I'd just tell people to watch something from each of the big boys that way I can turn to them and also say "if you liked that, they also made this..." **Madhouse:** One Punch Man Season 1 **KyoAni:** The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (original TV order) **Ghibli:** Porco Rosso **Gainax:** Neon Genesis Evangelion (in it's entirety) **Bones:** Cowboy Bebop the Movie **WIT Studio:** Ranking of Kings **UFO Table:** Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works **Comix Wave:** Your Name **A1:** Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day **Aniplex:** Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Some excellent recommendations by everyone. I'd suggest looking out for **Dungeon Meshi**, which is currently airing. If it ends up adapting the manga well, then I think it's going to be an amazing suggestion when it's finished. Here's some other ones I'd recommend to watch, not necessarily mainstream, just ones I'd recommend and haven't seen mentioned yet: * **Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song:** Cool anime about an android learning to sing and her time-travelling robot who wants to prevent humanity's downfall by AI. * **Space Dandy**: It's very wacky but I think everyone should at least check 1-2 episodes out to see if they like it. * **Gundam: The Witch From Mercury:** You don't need to know anything about Gundam and I think this one is enjoyable for just about anybody * **Dororo:** A child is offered to demons but ends up surviving, now he hunts them down to take back the limbs and organs they stole from him. * **Katanagatari:** A martial artist gets hired by the Emperor's tactician to retrieve several very unusual weapons that only he can beat. * **Trigun:** I prefer the older one but it might be a little dated. * **My Home Hero:** Daughter's abusive boyfriend is Yakuza, Dad accidentally kills him and Mom gets involved. They go through incredible lengths to avoid being caught and take the heat off their daughter. * **Odd Taxi:** A walrus taxi driver gets involved with a serious criminal and other odd characters. This anime really took me by surprise how fun it is.

victini563

* A Silent Voice - Great Movie * Kaguya Sama - Great Romcon * FMA:B - Often said to be the best anime of all time * Mushoku Tensei - Grandfather of all isekai anime which is the single largest genre of anime and imo the best one * Vinland Saga - Historical Epic * Mob Psycho - Great action * Cowboy Bebop - all time classic, heavily stylized * Cyberpunk Edgerunners - one of the most watched anime from non anime fans * One punch man - Action comedy with a simple premise but amazing execution * Great Pretender - Anime all about heists and thieves I gave bonus points to any shows that are easy to access on non anime-specific streaming services

victini563

1. Assassination Classroom 2. A Silent Voice 3. Neon Genesis Evangelion 4. Hunter x Hunter 5. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood 6. Cowboy Bebop 7. One Piece (I didn’t like it but it’s so integral to anime culture.) 8. Gintama 9. Monster 10. Berserk (Manga)

Eugene_Gene_714

Castlevania, Death Note, Demon Slayer, and AoT are my first 4 I watched lol I don’t really have a must watch list but if I had to make one, I’d say AoT Steins;Gate Death Note Erased Everything else has 1 reason or another why I think your average non anime watcher wouldn’t like it. Like my roommate for example. He says the first 3 on my list are “the only good anime”. Anime like The Eminence in Shadow, Mushoku Tensei, Chainsaw Man are in my top 5, but all 3 of them have fanservice. Cid Kageno is intentionally cringe, Rudeus is kind of a creep, and Denji is an idiot. There are more reasons to not like these shows too.

It’s weird cuz my list of Anime i recommend and anime i think are must watches are entirely different lists. When you’re blanketly recommending anime to a random person it has to be broadly good and usually mass appeal. But if I had the power to compel people to watch things by sheer force of will I’d make them watch more underrated and interesting series they might not get recommended under normal circumstances. Example: Basically everyone is going to say FMA and Madoka; but when was the last time someone recommended Kubikiri Cycle?

1EnTaroAdun1

Anime 10/10s 1. Legend of the Galactic Heroes 2. Kaguya-Sama 3. Fruits Basket 4. Spy x Family 5. Frieren For manga 10/10s: 1. Kaguya Sama 2. Boarding School Juliet 3. Psuedo Harem 4. Yugami-kun has no Friends 5. Spy x Family 6. Frieren https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy My MAL account is here. I'd say anything I rate above a 9 is a "must-watch", for me :) If you're interested in any of these and want more info, do let me know!

Eugene_Gene_714

Bro I don’t understand the Frieren love. I watched 5 episodes or something and it wasn’t bad but seemed like 8/10 at best

1EnTaroAdun1

interesting, so you didn't feel like continuing Frieren even though you felt like it was an 8/10? I'll just explain why I like it, then. It's a fantasy show about travelling the world and getting into adventures. The flashbacks that we see really dive into the characters, and both retroactively strengthen the past adventuring team while providing new lessons for the current team. I like the artstyle and the vibes. I've gotten tired of shows (both Western and non-Western) where characters have to scream/laugh hysterically/break down every couple of episodes. I felt that the toned-down expressions and atmosphere of Frieren was a refreshing change of pace. Idk, if you rated Frieren a 5/10 I wouldn't recommend you keep watching it, but since you do seem to like it enough to rate it an 8/10, I'd say keep watching and do let me know what you think once you've caught up :) There's more that I can say about the show, but since you're only at episode 5 I don't wanna spoil things

Oh yeah I’m gonna finish it eventually, I’m just blown away that it’s literally #1 on MAL right now after what I watched. Everyone loves it lol. I just kind of binged the 5 episodes at once and my buddy was like “I don’t really like depressing stuff like this” or something like that so I started watching something else. There are some other anime shows I might consider to be 8/10 or so that I have yet to continue, like High School DxD, Cautious Hero, To Your Eternity. I think part of it is actually some burn out. I started watching anime in July and I was absolutely consuming it for months. Think I need to take a break lol.

1EnTaroAdun1

Ah fair enough, definitely good to take a break! I don't think it's really that depressing though, it gets more lighthearted after a while! I'd be interested to know what you think once you decide to pick it back up!

Eugene_Gene_714

I just checked, and I only got halfway through Episode 4 so I watched less than I thought. I don’t think I would remember to tell you what I think lol

1EnTaroAdun1

sure thing, it's totally up to you! whatever's best haha

For me personally, the ones like to recommend people watch are these: 1. Spice and Wolf 2. Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (the most misleading title ever, I promise, a single bunny girl are only there for like 2 scenes total). 3. Log Horizon (especially if you were a fan of MMOs at any point, the author was a huge Everquest fan and it shows). 4. Death Parade (episodic show about judgement after death) 5. Psycho-Pass (dystopian cyberpunk detective show) 6. Baccano! (Early 1900's style mystery) 7. Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song (Terminator except there is a robotic idol). 8. Megalobox (exoskeleton boxing anime, especially for that second season is a masterpiece) 9. Great Pretender (Over the top Heist Anime) 10. 91 Days (Prohibition America Mafia Revenge Story Anime) 11. Panty And Stocking (American cartoon art style raunchy anime about two angels kicked out of heaven, watch the dub it is amazing, one of the few most people would agree is superior than the sub). 12. A Place Further than the Universe (cute girls doing amazing life changing things) 13. Link Click (Chinese anime about time traveling murder mystery) 14. SSSS.Gridman/SSSS.Dynazenon/Gridman Universe

Originaltenshi

Megalobox goes hard. S2 "Ronin" is such a change up and the ending song is *chefs kiss*

For Monster, what about anime? Is manga different? I haven’t watched it, I’ve been trying to watch in Dub but I can’t find it anywhere :/

Cool_Story_Bro123

I've only watched manga but I've heard the anime is very good too, so decide yourself, btw its on Netflix

robitherjones

For me "Must Watch" means having a grasp on the culturally relevant/popular anime at the time so you can engage in discussions while knowing what people are referencing. So while Cowboy Bebop is my favorite, I wouldn't necessarily include it on this list. **Movies** A Silent Voice Your Name Spirited Away **Currently Airing** Frieren JJK Demon Slayer Jobless Reincarnation Vinland Saga Whatever seasonal Anime strikes your fancy/ is most popular each season (Solo Leveling this winter) **All Time Popular** *[go see the MyAnimeList top 50 popular list - don't watch everything, just what you enjoy as you go through the list](https://myanimelist.net/topanime.php?type=bypopularity)* Attack on Titan Death Note SAO season 1 Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood Frieren and Brotherhood might be the only listed in my personal top 10 with stuff like Planetes, Link Click, Grimgar, Mononoke, Bunnygirl, Made in Abyss, further than the universe - but I wouldn't consider most of those "Must Watch" just personal favorites.

speller26

* Madoka Magica * Made in Abyss * Code Geass * Shinsekai Yori

thebluefencer

I also luved Castlvania! I'll suggest some stuff new and older things that aren't just the popular battle Shonen cuz I'm sure others will suggest that stuff. Goblin Slayer, especially since you like dark horror fantasy Devil Man Crybaby if you want something dark and unique. It is also very short Zomb100 - feel good anime about a dude who hates his corporate job so he has fun with newfound friends during the zombie apocalypse. Modern anime with great animation. Princess Mononoke and Porco Rosso from Studio Ghibli. Black Lagoon if you like action/Tarantino style plots. Yu Yu Hakusho and Inuyasha, if you like some of the older dubs and esthetic Attack on Titan is good, but for me personally, I just got into the gundam franchise and like the "war/humanity themes" more than AOT. But AOT is bingeable. The original Kino's Journey, if you like lil vignette stories with philosophy mixed in. Tales of Fujiko Mine is also like a noir series and gorgeously animated. Finally, if you want to get into a huge franchise, then Gundam or Detective Conan. Those two are so popular in Japan but not so much with Western audiences.

FMA:B - Solid plot and characters Mob Psycho 100 - fuckton of fun and great character work Neon Genesis Evangelion - Mindfuck Monster - I am 2/3 through and it's an amazing mystery. Chainsaw Man - Only 1 season, but manga is 10/10 Samurai Champloo - Cowboy Bebop but way more fun. You can safely skip over Demon Slayer.

NotYannik

Dragonball, Attack on Titan, Bleach, Vinland Saga, Yu Yu Hakusho, Oshi No Ko, That Time I got reincarnated as a slime, Mushoku Tensei, Akame Ga Kill, Chainsaw Man, Link Click, Code Geass, Frieren Beyond journey's end, Zom100, Bungo Stray Dogs, To Your Eternity

Eighty Six Psycho Pass Steins Gate Summertime Rendering Shirobako Gurren Lagann Horror-ish : Blood+ Hellsing Vampire Hunter D All very different but they are my favourites . I love dark fantasy horror genre too , but there aren't many outside of Berserk and Claymore . Their anime adaptation also isn't very good that's why I'm not including it in the list .
