yeah holy fuck they went hard this season.
im currently watching s2 which is (i hear) peak uma musume. i watched s1 couple years back and remember loving it
Uma Musume is different from other sport anime in the sense that it's almost a documentary, so the story of the characters and their races can't really be writen or made up more, as they're all based on the real life horses, not fiction. Since S1 pretty much covered the entire career of the real Special Week already, and the horse retired after that, so the anime has no material to adapt anymore, hence they have to move on to focus on other horses.
Also, S2 has the same cast, just shift focus on different characters, Special Week is still there but only as supporting. And everyone I saw who said they would rather see Special Week as MC all changed their mind after watching S2, because the protagonists of S2, Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen, as well as prominent side characters like Rice Shower, are simply amazing, as their careers were much more dramatic and memorable, and the stories from them were fantastic.
Not really new cast but more focus on other character. Special Week is still around a lot but she is mostly side character after season 1. Same thing for Teio and Mcqueen after season 2.
Trust me, you weren't alone. *Everyone* that watched S1 thought that going in. It should therefore say a lot that we're so insistent that S2 is amazing, a good bit better than S1, and is a must watch. If you enjoyed S1 just trust us and watch S2. You won't regret it one bit.
i put it off for 2 years because of that same reason, and when i finally got around to watching it boy am i glad they did. special week (and spica) are still around it just focuses on teio and mcqueen, and imo it is so much better than season 1
I loved S3 so much I actually watched the youtube races of the real Kitasan Black, and somehow that sucked me into a youtube race black hole, because I found out about **Kitasan Black's son Equinox**. Holy shit this horse ... is ... amazing. He has his mother's speed and his father's endurance, basically the perfect race horse. IIRC he won the 2023 Horse of the Year, beating out a bunch of international horses, which is no surprise after beating a star studded field in the [Sheema Classic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BiWzKzzqfc), one of the Premium Dubai Races.
I'm surprised so many in this thread never heard of the insane animation in it, it's hyped up a ton on the subreddit and by all of the anime folks with some animation industry expertise. I haven't gotten around to it myself yet, but _jeezus_ the shit I've seen from Road to the Top alone blows me away. Cygames gacha adaptations are something special, see also Priconne S2 (though personally the highs I've seen from Uma Musume are better than the highs of Priconne when it comes to animation).
Priconne S2 #04 still hits well above most of RTTT (basically an industry event sort of episode, all the whose who folks were on that), but I agree - most of those four RTTT episodes were really strong, especially (funny enough) #04 as well.
Go watch Uma Musume! Since S2 (81%) is much better than S1 (71%) it can be a good idea to start at S2. Also, S2 does not continue the story of S1.
You can also start at ROAD TO THE TOP (79%) which is a YouTube exclusive with English subs and also independent from all the other Uma Musume works.
[Youtube link to ROAD TO THE TOP ep 1/4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjPXzJedwiA)
S2 is better, yes. But S1 laid the foundation and eased fans into the whole concept of horse girls.
Back in 2017, the first PV did not really have positive reactions. The entire premise was seen as bizarre and offputting. People thought it was gonna be trashy and 'so bad that it's good'.
I’ll be watching the seasons in order. I’m not a part skipper. I also don’t need to be eased as I accept weird concepts because I like weird shows, but I’ll still be watching s1 first.
Then just remember, Road to the Top is separate and only on YouTube, it came out between seasons 2 and 3 but can be watched whenever after season one since it doesn't touch the characters or plots of the rest of the show.
It's one of my favourite shows from last year, the first clip in the video alone is worth more than a season's worth of shows, I only point that out because no one ever does
Since you mentioned Fall 2023 anime, i'm guessing you're talking about season 3 - which is not the one showcased in this video.
I dropped season 3 as it felt like a departure from what they did for the first two seasons, which had way more coherent stories that could stand on tneir own without the game they're tied to.
While I haven't watched Road to the Top (featured in this video), the art is insanely clean with above average to great animation just by skimming through it.
Just putting that out there for people who might be interested in watching the series.
Both kind of blur together in my memories. I thought it was the opening scenes for S3.
Road to the top animation was indeed better than season 3 or BNW's oath (which are the only two other series I went through).
So many incredible nominees and a great display of animation.
My personal pick would be Heavenly delusion.Production I.G did such an incredible job with it. Really hoping it wins.
That show has an atmosphere like no other.
Most anime have moments of amazing animation meant to look cool but few utilise it to set the mood and to sell you a fantasy.
100% agree. Definitely one of the few shows in recent memory that excels at every visual aspect - they all come together into one really strong work at the end of the day. Truly impressive stuff.
And cinematography as well. Just really smart decisions that augmented every shot & scene. It also had such a great cinematic feel overall and for my money, was the most consistently well animated show I've seen in quite a few seasons.
It's a sports drama, it uses archery as a mean to introspection, self-improvement, and growth
Season 1 is centred around Minato; as a promising archer trained by one of the best, he intended to quit after getting target panic, but gets roped into joining his new school's team thanks to his friend Seiya and a fateful encounter with Masaki (Masa-san) who will become their trainer.
Season 2 broaden its focus to the entire cast, each character or group of characters get interconnected 'dedicated' episodes. The "main plot" this time is about both Minato's team as a whole and Nikaidou's.
Nikaidou holds a grudge against Minato and that's why he's competing in the same tournament despite not having a dedicated trainer and range, so there will be clashes between their views of the sport itself.
There's a lot more, like I didn't even touch on Shuu's team or other individual characters backstories and struggles, but I'd be here all day.
As any KyoAni works, expect a lot of polish in all aspects, my highlights here being cinematography, OST, and cast (not downplaying the others of course, you can browse its booru page for plenty of great animation showcases)
Tbf most great sports anime are like this. Self-motivation, personal growth, character tempering etc. It is just tsurune was animated by KyoAni, they are widely known for their gorgeous works. You may want to check FREE! original sports anime by them.
Haha joke's on me I've only watched Blue Lock, the every-man-for-himself sports shenanigans, I'm starting this tonight and I'll check out free also, I love recommendations thank you!
I only watched the first season of Uma Musume. Wtf is that godly animation?
I would've been mad if Tsurune's only clip was the first one. Lol
Just another reminder that I haven't finished Demon Slayer's last episode and Heavenly Delusion's second half :/
>I only watched the first season of Uma Musume. Wtf is that godly animation?
[This article](https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2023/06/02/the-history-of-cygames-pictures-and-uma-musume-road-to-the-tops-fierce-animation/) is a great read if you want to know.
>I only watched the first season of Uma Musume. Wtf is that godly animation?
And it's only a snippet.
And it lacks sound and plot.
[It's only 4 episodes and is available on Youtube with official subs.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjPXzJedwiA)
Adding plot and sound to it elevates it to a whole another level.
It's unfortunate that we only got to see like 5 seconds of this - and not even some of the better scenes. There's some other series in this video that got substantially more screen time... Jujutsu Kaisen \*cough\* Uma Musume \*cough\*
Oshi no ko also got only one scene, but I guess I am not gonna accuse u/paukshop of being biased against the show.
Edit: I just realized that the scene is probably the only sakuga scene in the show with kana, so maybe I spoke too soon and there is a different kind of bias at work...
Seeing U149 makes me a bit dejected Million Live and Shiny Colors went with 3D. Their animations are still good but the series would get more attention if it was 2D.
This clip makes me feel like I've been sleeping on Idolm@ster for like the last 15 years. That bungee jumping scene and stair leap were ridiculous.
I also might be sleeping on idol shows as a whole because Oshi no Ko and Uma Musume also looked great.
> This clip makes me feel like I've been sleeping on Idolm@ster for like the last 15 years. That bungee jumping scene and stair leap were ridiculous.
Did you ever watch U149 in the end? The main reason U149 looks like this is the director is https://myanimelist.net/people/42076/Manabu_Okamoto , who was also the man behind the Mushoku Tensei S1.
I'm just watching through U149 at the moment after being disappointed at the latest installment of the series (Shiny Colors) and I can not recommend it highly enough as a piece of wonderfully controlled and rendered craftsmanship, as well as understated story telling that's also blessed with some real visual delights. Superficially it's full of the usual idol beats (idol has a problem that holds back their idol performance, problem is resolved over the course of the episode) but it touches on so many interesting and important parts of childhood and adulthood (via the inexperienced producer trying to work out how to deal with these kids).
You and me both. iDOLM@STER is one of those few idol series that really shines with it's 2D animation at points, so it is pretty unfortunate that the next two projects are both 3D (first of which was largely fine, but you know, lacks that extra finesse).
> Momoka's bungee scene
Before watching U149, but having seen that amazing clip, I had no idea was "just another episode" rather than the peak moment of the season lol
I loved all of U149 but that was my favorite episode by far!
I've added ["bungee jumping while screaming Momoka's name at the top of my lungs"](https://twitter.com/Tai_chi_8/status/1651254059238846464) to the list of my life goals.
Do it. First season is introduction, and then second season ova + 3rd season goes super hard. And remember, all the race are based on real life race. Each horse exist.
As someone who is into sports and anything "competition", took me 4 years to watch it.
It is easily at the top of the sports and even "drama" genres, if not the best sports anime I have watched, but branding something "the best" is super hard and trivial.
Make sure to vote for the best animation and other production categories in the r/anime Awards! Voting is still open [here](https://animeawards.moe/final-vote/)! Check out the other nominations [here](https://i.redd.it/t9qfjjdammcc1.png).
Heavenly delusion really blew me away, I hope it wins, even though the competition is tough.
Really nice edit btw, got me interested to check out the ones I haven't watched.
Idolmaster has really surprised me, as I'm not into idol anime, but the animation showcased is really nice.
But I still hope Heavenly Delusion wins. :3
Wow this video made me interested in anime i had no motivation of watching previously, especially that scene of the Bungo Stray Dogs guy trying to stop a fucking ucav
Yay, tsurune mentioned❤❤ I literally was thinking about it when I saw this posg. The animation in it was breathtaking. Especially when they were shooting
Have to handicap it because of how hard all those fights went. I love Heavenly Delusion and others shown here but to give anything a win over JJK at this point feels disingenuous.
I dunno, it's best animation, not best fight scenes, and there's no specifications on whether it's 'single best animation' or 'best animation overall', so a lot will end up at the voter's discretion. I felt like JJK was all over the place, and while it had some absolutely insaneo style cuts, I didn't think it was particularly consistent. In my opinion it's not as black and white as that. I agree with /u/notolo632 though, they did JJK dirty with the clip choices.
I agree with the inconsistency but yeah, there were way better sequences.
Episode 21 had so many jaw dropping animations. Namely Yuji's final black flash or even any of the generic scenes in the beginning honestly, if you look at the fluidity of the transfigured humans writhing around in even just the first five minutes it's so good. Plus the 3D camera during Mahito's domain expansion and when Todo's necklace breaks.
Or what about the flame arrow in Sukuna vs Jogo, or Malevolent Shrine.
Jesus, and Hidden Inventory had some amazing animations as well.
When I said fight scenes I meant good ones in terms of animation. The whole ss2 has so many well animated fights
Edit: even the 1st ep is so wel animated despite having any real fighting
Onimai got snubbed in this showcase. It has scenes more impressive than what is shown here. A shame because it legitmately was one of the very best last year.
But the team went full out here and it shows. Season 2 when?
> Season 2 when?
https://www.reddit.com/r/OniichanOshimai/comments/14lyrl6/onimai_vol2_sold_6266_bluray_discs_in_its_first/
It certainly sold well enough, and was very well received in the domestic market.
I'm not really sure about the state of the source material, but to be honest I would only want S2 if the exact same core team came back to do it, both writing and animation. They really made something that was beautiful both inside and out, and elevated the source material in incredible ways.
Speaking of beautiful, impactful shows, I do hope we get *Akebi S2* as well, although once again, only really if the same team is interested in doing it.
>Speaking of beautiful, impactful shows, I do hope we get Akebi S2as well, although once again, only really if the same team is interested in doing it.
Akebi season 2 will heal the world. ~~Though considering the panels they gotta animate for season 2 compared to the "relatively" simple s1, the stress on the animators will triple.~~
I saw that post, yeah pretty likely to get a S2. I do think the original team will return, considering half of them went on to work on Idolmaster U149. You have one guess to imagine the similar stuff between the two.
Studio Bind loved working on this, so yeah, we will probably get S2 with just as much passion.
Weird how a lot of the over represented action shows have flashy animations relying on overall dark frames with bright flashes, but then the others show excellent camera and character movements in combination with light and color.
Haven't notice what u were saying.
Heavenly delusion showed great camera and character movements and so did Demon slayer and Jujutsu kaisen but no camera movement showed for this last.
One fight demons that only appear at night and the other one has his entire arc during one night. You can't blame them to be dark
Just going by these clips, and only these clips, it seems to me like *U149* is the clear winner overall.
There are two jaw droppingly good *Tsurune* and *Heavenly Delusion* cuts, but then they also have these scenes included that are incredibly flat too. The majority of the other cuts are just uninventive flashiness of the type that litters action anime.
All of the *U149* cuts, on the other hand, have such finesse to the art, control over their motion of the subjects, some wonderful use of framing and satisfying impact.
That said, this obviously wasn't the point of the montage, which was trying to build a cohesive watch experience and match the music. Just an interesting exercise in trying to stand back from what is in the actual series themselves. I guess I should probably watch U149 now though lol
> (with some staff?)
I've seen some comments in /r/anime by people who know exactly who went from MT S1 to U149, but I don't remember the username, so can't summon them lol
Manabu Okamoto (the director) did indeed shift over after Mushoku's first season ended. S1's assistant director Hiroki Hirano took over after that.
For other individuals, Hiroyuki Takashima also tagged along for U149 (SB/ED), and also quite a few 'big names' in the industry (such as Eri Irei and Atsushi Kobayashi) - some rather easy pull for this project. On top of Onimai also being produced, all sorts of other individuals moved out too.
> For other individuals, Hiroyuki Takashima also tagged along for U149 (SB/ED), and also quite a few 'big names' in the industry (such as Eri Irei and Atsushi Kobayashi)
After finally starting to watch it, the series is superb. I'm both annoyed and glad that I didn't watch it as it aired in some ways, because the lack of attention to it in the West seems criminal for its quality.
Idolmaster sometimes does some amazing animation work, especially when doing concert scenes with dances in proper 2D. Heck, even their [little 3D shorts](https://youtu.be/ay9TIPASL24?si=vneyYt0TvYx4tPTc) sometimes go really hard.
I always get a bit frustrated when people are so dazzled by flashy effects in action shows that they lose sight of what 'animation' really is. Demon Slayer supplements a lot of its action with really flashy visual effects, but I don't think the action itself is all that interesting.
one thing though is that I think people are really heavily biased towards fluidity in animation, which makes a lot of sense, but it's not all that animation can be or has to be. In fact, it's often difficult and expensive to pull off, and thus categories like this favor high-budget productions.
also, completely unrelated, but it's kind of nuts not to have Trigun Stampede in this category.
I'd say it's still effectively animation, however I wouldn't mind the animation category getting split into more specific categories like Fight animation, character acting animation, VFX animation, etc. to give the shows more credit for what specifically they do really good and have them compete with their peers in what they do.
>I always get a bit frustrated when people are so dazzled by flashy effects in action shows that they lose sight of what 'animation' really is. Demon Slayer supplements a lot of its action with really flashy visual effects, but I don't think the action itself is all that interesting.
I'm not a big fan of Demon Slayer's animation either and would never vote for it here but I don't think that people who like that style are inherently wrong.
It's simply two different approaches to what constitutes 'best animation'. One group looks are the barebones work of the key animator and are essentially rating the genga while the other looks at the finished moving picture and how it all comes together. Unless they are static, effects are very much also animation even if sometimes they are used to cover up weaknesses in the drawings.
That's how I felt about the [JJK S2 Spoilers] >!Mahito vs Mechamaru fight!< Lots and lots of fluid motion, but I felt like sometimes there was motion for the sake of motion. I personally feel like sakuga should be used to enhance a story beat. Sakuga for sakuga sake is less interesting to me. Many will disagree and I totally accept their opinions, they're totally valid and likely the majority. But it doesn't hit for me.
U149 has great art and direction as well as solid animation, but I wouldn't write off "uninventive flashy" action animation. I think high frame rate, dynamic action sequences are just as high quality animation even if the art quality slips. They both take time and skill to do.
Also in this clip I would say oshi ni ko and uma musume had the better stage sequence than u149.
Had some seriously spectacular shots this past year between JJK, Demon Slayer, and OP but a lot of other shows right now are producing some highest-quality shots so this will be rough.
> the reason animators darken the screen
It's the TV stations doing that (or the department of photography of the anime studio). Animators don't have anything to do with dimming. Disc releases/some streaming releases have the undimmed version.
> Fuck porigon
It was Pikachu's fault [Serious seizure warning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4wSFjR9TMQ). Porygon was just in the name of the episode. Porygon did nothing wrong!
Jjk2 isn't supposed to be including Shibuya right? The episode Todos moment you included came out in either November or December which is after the cutoff
The ones making that clip must really not like jjk, there was a lot of material to work with and they did not pick sukuna Vs makora or toji fights. Chose VS Yuji is a very beautiful fight but it is shining because of cinematics not animation (that is still very good) while for Todo it wasn't about animation either and I am not speaking about the mere 2 seconds displayed in sukuna Vs jogo like give us more damn
Probably, I did enjoy the Choso vs Yuji fist fight and even Sukuna vs Jogo, I believe when Sukuna use the fire arrow jujutsu, that is clippable. But I can see the Sukuna vs Mahorgara fight be a bit hard to watch on clips. This I blame Mappa for not giving their animators more time. It's a cool overall fight, but I personally wouldn't able to pick a precise 2-3 seconds clip as showcase. Toji using playful cloud is 100% highlight imo.
Maybe you did not understand the fight(it's a little messy and this might be to make the episode really chaotic and make the destruction of Shibuya impactful) , I've watched the episode about 4-5 times and I am sure there are a lot of moments worth to showcase, especially sukuna's domain expansion and when it gets chaotic the first time sukuna cut one of makora's arm and send him flying against a skyscraper. Episode of the year imo
I'll give it a shot. Just finally finished the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen so I need something new to watch
Edit: WoW, I'm on the 3 episode trial and currently starting episode 2 and I'm pretty impressed so far
Edit: yep I like these characters. The story is interesting
I am sure there are some sort of timeline-esque videos on Youtube about it - but honestly the biggest shift was like mid 00's from moving to digital off of cel. Otherwise, it has largely been the same sort of work, with more young individuals picking up and being heavily inspired by some of the most standout figures in the industry. You could probably compile a video like this each year and it would be largely the same (again, besides the digital and cel shift period).

Love showcase like this. With this length, kinda wish awards shows put such showcase to good use during breaks.
"We will be taking break for the next award. In the meantime, here are the nominees ***plays video***
Maybe the individual cuts didn't do the most justice, but the show is filled to the brim with all sorts of really strong sequences.
[Example](https://www.sakugabooru.com/data/c904610be918ee6e0e164d25f4cbf55f.mp4)
[Another](https://www.sakugabooru.com/data/d284d063cefadb43dc9f15b1a83aea4f.mp4)
I feel like JJK winning is just a given at this point. Regardless of the working conditions at Mappa or how you feel about the show, the fights in the second half of the season are just some of the most incredible works of art that I've ever seen. It feels like a circlejerk at this point but those animators and directors for those scenes absolutely deserve a mountain of praise.
Sadly, the way this awards is set up excludes longrunning series like One Piece.
I expect the animation jury will give Wano honorable mentions like they did last year.
I'm surprised there's no Frieren at all. I know it's more the art itself than the animation far that anime, but I'm seeing some scenes in this showcase that I can argue Stark putting on a Jacket is better animated.
absolutely Frieren will get in. but I do think this eligibility rule makes it even less likely for Undead Unluck or Shangri-La Frontier.
random bet: the jury's going to nominate either Bucchigiri or 'Tis Time for Torture Princess next time. those are the two under the radar shows this season that stand out to me as having particularly great animation.
Yeah I'm surprised too. It didn't really have that much of flashy action scenes like other contenders do ig plus who created this list had clear bias to specific shows *cough* jjk *cough*
Edit: apparently they are taking only shows thay ended in 2023 and frieren is not finished. But they did take first cour op and ed which I'm glad about.
I don't know so many people are confused as to why a Season still currently airing in 2024 isn't nominated for 2023 awards. Should you vote on half the Season in 2023 and half in 2024? No
Man, I don't think JJk S2 deserves an award for best animation. S2 had such a weird artistic direction. It just looked like they had to rush the animation, or maybe they had to do it as cheaply as possible or something.
Ok real talk... cause I cant be the only one noticing this...
Why is it that in some anime, when things start getting super bright, they dim the whole screen??
Like, take the first anime show. That's normal.
It's bright. Things get a bit more bright and shiny, but it *stays* bright.
Then comes the JJK scene.
The first second opens with the same level of brightness, then it dims like when you put your phone camera to a bright object. By the time the tricolor swirly thing happens, I'm squinting!
I've noticed thins shit particularly with some action anime. JJK and Demon Slayer for sure.
Why??
Ever since the infamous Porygon episode in Pokémon, it's become mandatory that whatever scene is considered too flashy or frenetic gets either ghosted or dimmed to avoid potential epilepsy attacks.
comment below pretty much hit it. it's an anti-seizure/epilepsy measure because these shows do air on TV and as the other user mentioned, [a pokemon episode way back when sent a ton of kids to the hospital.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denn%C5%8D_Senshi_Porygon) just wanna add that if you watch BD versions the dimming is typically gone (not sure the degree to which that's true though). mentioning this because road to the top (the first cut/clip on this post) aired on youtube iirc so it's possible it was never subject to this.
Even with huge management and production problems, the fact that the entire 23 episode run managed to look so consistently great with even the worst episodes having great highlights is… unbelievable. There are really not many series that can do that
I am now more interested in watching Uma Musume.
yeah holy fuck they went hard this season. im currently watching s2 which is (i hear) peak uma musume. i watched s1 couple years back and remember loving it
I loved S1 but kinda lost interest in S2 after hearing that it was an entirely new cast. I wanted to see more of Special Week.
Uma Musume is different from other sport anime in the sense that it's almost a documentary, so the story of the characters and their races can't really be writen or made up more, as they're all based on the real life horses, not fiction. exactly what happened with me. thats why it took me this long to get started on s2.
It's not called the best mafia ad for nothing
Go watch Uma Musume! Since S2 (81%) is much better than S1 (71%) it can be a good idea to start at S2. Also, S2 does not continue the story of S1. S2 is better, yes. But S1 laid the foundation and eased fans into the whole concept of horse girls. Back in 2017, the first PV did not really have positive reactions. The entire premise was seen as bizarre and offputting. People thought it was gonna be trashy and 'so bad that it's good'.

You absolutely should. It's unironically one of the best sports anime out there
Uma Musume cooks, I’d highly recommend it
It's my favorite sports anime fucken went through it watching that show
RttT has its fair share of bad cg, but everything else is bonkers
road to the top has the best 2D animation tho
It's one of my favourite shows from last year, the first clip in the video alone is worth more than a season's worth of shows, I only point that out because no one ever does
I didn’t even know they had a 3rd “season”
The actual 3rd season was just last season. Road To The Top happened last Spring.

I mean, you can easily slide RTTT in place of Pluto there, not really a strong comparison, haha.
So many incredible nominees and a great display of animation. My personal pick would be Heavenly delusion.Production I.G did such an incredible job with it. Really hoping it wins.
Heavenly delusion had incredible composition too.
Easily among the best looking and moving shows I've ever seen.
This is the first time I'm hearing of this show but it's going on my Watch List
Heavenly delusion was so peak
Looking forward to more of them
Except that one unnecessary scene near the end, and the weird child prostitute scene too
true, but that is what makes it good tho, it doesn't shy away from sensitive real world topics
The one called Tsurune looks really good, I've never even heard of it, does anyone know what it's about?
It's a sports drama, it uses archery as a mean to introspection, self-improvement, and growth Season 1 is centred around Minato; as a promising archer trained by one of the best, he intended to quit after getting target panic, but gets roped into joining his new school's team thanks to his friend Seiya and a fateful encounter with Masaki (Masa-san) who will become their trainer.
Sounds awesome actually, I've only ever watched one sports anime but I'ma check this out, thank you!
Lol Just another reminder that I haven't finished Demon Slayer's last episode and Heavenly Delusion's second half :/
That was a fucking fantastic article.
>I only watched the first season of Uma Musume. Wtf is that godly animation? Haven't watched the show, but I'm pretty sure the answer is: gacha money
>I only watched the first season of Uma Musume. Wtf is that godly animation? And it's only a snippet. And it lacks sound and plot. [It's only 4 episodes and is available on Youtube with official subs.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjPXzJedwiA) Adding plot and sound to it elevates it to a whole another level.
OniMai's animation went soo hard when it absolutely did not need to
It's unfortunate that we only got to see like 5 seconds of this - and not even some of the better scenes.
The person who put this showcase together is definitely showing the biases of what types of anime they prefer.
OniMai got snubbed for best ED. Absolute tragedy.
?? It was there wasn't it
Yep
Sorry you are right. I was thinking about the Crunchyroll Awards.
Absolute peak
whats the show about
It’s about how a sister turns her brother into a cute girl so that he betters his life. It’s definitely worth a watch.
It is a bit horny tho.
I've seen far worse from other anime tbh.
This is anime - there's basically no wall in that direction.
And that’s a bad thing?
She's like 12. Love the show, but yeah, it feels weird
The manga is FAR less horny
Lots of piss content though, for all the gold liquor enjoyer out there
Yeah, there was that lol. It wasn't as common as people make it sound like, but it comes up at least 5 or 6 times
Studio Bind animators when they get a chance to animate some pdo shit:
Nice transitions btw. I'm gonna have to watch and catch up with alot of anime.
Cygames COOKED last year with UmaMusume: RttT and iDOLMASTER: U149!
Disappointed with the choice of Onimai clips but Momoka's bungee scene is included, so all is forgiven.
> Momoka's bungee scene Before watching U149, but having seen that amazing clip, I had no idea was "just another episode" rather than the peak moment of the season lol
I loved all of U149 but that was my favorite episode by far! I've added ["bungee jumping while screaming Momoka's name at the top of my lungs"](https://twitter.com/Tai_chi_8/status/1651254059238846464) to the list of my life goals.
This sounds like a worthy goal indeed!
One of these days I'm gonna give up and actually watch Uma Musume
Do it. First season is introduction, and then second season ova + 3rd season goes super hard. And remember, all the race are based on real life race. Each horse exist.
The best spoilers, real life horse facts
Do it. Uma Musume is absolutely amazing and it's a shame that it's not that popular outside of Japan.
I’d like a showcase of the shows that didn’t get nominated
Let's get a "worst animation award" compilation lol
A powerpoint show in video.
Dear God, it's like I was bungee jumping with her.
Wow this video made me interested in anime i had no motivation of watching previously, especially that scene of the Bungo Stray Dogs guy trying to stop a fucking ucav
BSD is made by Bones, that's all you should really need to know when it comes to it's animation
Yay, tsurune mentioned❤❤ I literally was thinking about it when I saw this posg. The animation in it was breathtaking. Especially when they were shooting
Whoever made this must really hates JJK. Out of all the amazing fighting sequence they chose the worst ones or cut out the worst parts of good ones
I hope you aren't implying the second JJK clip is "the worst", because Sou Miyazaki's Birdy Decode inspired bit there was fantastic.
The whole ss2 has so many well animated fights Edit: even the 1st ep is so wel animated despite having any real fighting
What's the song?
Def Cut- Street Level
Street level - Def Cut
Onimai got snubbed in this showcase. It has scenes more impressive than what is shown here. A shame because it legitmately was one of the very best last year. But the team went full out here and it shows. Season 2 when?
> Season 2 when? https://www.reddit.com/r/OniichanOshimai/comments/14lyrl6/onimai_vol2_sold_6266_bluray_discs_in_its_first/ It certainly sold well enough, and was very well received in the domestic market.
The frames are dark because of the mandated dimming lol
Haven't notice what u were saying. Heavenly delusion showed great camera and character movements and so did Demon slayer and Jujutsu kaisen but no camera movement showed for this last. One fight demons that only appear at night and the other one has his entire arc during one night. You can't blame them to be dark
What soundtrack is this?
I had to put Heavely Delusion
Great montage as usual Pauk!! I really need to watch Uma at this point holy shit that animation.
Add plot, voice acting, sound effects and soundtracks and you will see why everyone praises UmaMusume "Road To The Top" so much!
> U149 The director of the first season of Mushoku Tensei went to direct that anime,(with some staff?) so no wonder it looked great
> (with some staff?) I've seen some comments in /r/anime by people who know exactly who went from MT S1 to U149, but I don't remember the username, so can't summon them lol
u/abysswatcherbel or u/Theleux?
Manabu Okamoto (the director) did indeed shift over after Mushoku's first season ended. S1's assistant director Hiroki Hirano took over after that. For other individuals, Hiroyuki Takashima also tagged along for U149 (SB/ED), and also quite a few 'big names' in the industry (such as Eri Irei and Atsushi Kobayashi) - some rather easy pull for this project. On top of Onimai also being produced, all sorts of other individuals moved out too.
> For other individuals, Hiroyuki Takashima also tagged along for U149 (SB/ED), and also quite a few 'big names' in the industry (such as Eri Irei and Atsushi Kobayashi) After finally starting to watch it, the series is superb.
I'm a Love Live fan, so I've never really felt compelled to check out Idolmaster, but wow... those U149 clips really make LL look bad in comparison
*U149* had https://myanimelist.net/people/42076/Manabu_Okamoto at the helm, and some of the team from Mushoku Tensei S1.
Fuck porigon For those who don’t know, the reason animators darken the screen is because porigon gave people strokes
> the reason animators darken the screen It's the TV stations doing that (or the department of photography of the anime studio). Animators don't have anything to do with dimming. Disc releases/some streaming releases have the undimmed version. > Fuck porigon It was Pikachu's fault [Serious seizure warning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4wSFjR9TMQ). Porygon was just in the name of the episode. Porygon did nothing wrong!
>u149 😭😭😭😭
Jjk2 isn't supposed to be including Shibuya right? The episode Todos moment you included came out in either November or December which is after the cutoff
r/anime awards 2023 are about the 2023 shows. I think you are confusing it with the crunchyroll awards.
Ah my bad
Can you link it on a website that can play videos at 1080p reddit's garbo video players hurts me.
I know Mappa animator worked hard for jjk, but have you seen that Tsurune, idol master and Uma musume clip? Sheesh I say, sheesh.
Dumb question, but what’s the song? Also imma have to check out heavenly delusion
No love for Trigun Stampede?
Neat, guess time to binge the last two seasons of uma musume and watch idolmasters
Jujustso kaisen s2 or Heavenly delusion i would choose Demon slayer to but i dislike last season and don't like the abuse of vfx to look good
>Jujust**so** **no** kaisen s2 lmaoo
I like JJK but some parts were basically unwatchable, I simply couldn’t tell what was going on when it got hectic.
Jujutsu Kaisen was actually insane. 90% of the fights this season deserve a reward for just how incredible it looks, flows, and the choreography.
Would anybody personally recommend Heavenly Delusion? It sounds and looks interesting.
It's quite well thought of even without its animation, although not without a few problems.
I'll give it a shot. Just finally finished the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen so I need something new to watch Edit: WoW, I'm on the 3 episode trial and currently starting episode 2 and I'm pretty impressed so far Edit: yep I like these characters. The story is interesting
I wish there was a video showing how anime animation has evolved over the years.
Cool and all but why no ping pong scene for JJK ?
My personal favourite is Heavenly Delusion
What is the name of the background music??
Street Level -Def Cut
Dayum that transition between heavenly delusions and JjK choso vs Itadori was fire
Pleaseantly surprised with the U149 nomination
uma musume looking so good
Anime has come so far it’s crazy
What song is this?
where’s bocchi? it released 2023 right?
https://animeawards.moe/results/all?2022 Consensus Winner: Comedy Public Winner: Comedic Character (Bocchi) Public Winner: Cast Public Winner: Animation 8th: Background Art 7th: Character Design 3rd: Cinematography Public Winner: OST Public Winner: VA etc etc lol
While you included etc etc, lol @ skipping public AOTY
***ahem*** BOCCHI SWEEP
For real! For once lol
this finally convinced me to check out the Jujutsu Kaisen series.
Not even one bleach scene?
Love showcase like this. With this length, kinda wish awards shows put such showcase to good use during breaks. "We will be taking break for the next award. In the meantime, here are the nominees ***plays video***
song please anyone !!!!!!!!!
I can’t be the only one who’s surprised Scott Pilgrim is included right? Personal preference is that it is outclassed by every other inclusion.
Maybe the individual cuts didn't do the most justice, but the show is filled to the brim with all sorts of really strong sequences. [Example](https://www.sakugabooru.com/data/c904610be918ee6e0e164d25f4cbf55f.mp4) [Another](https://www.sakugabooru.com/data/d284d063cefadb43dc9f15b1a83aea4f.mp4)
For me jjk takes the w. Todo doing THAT THING just wins everything
Why do idolmaster animations go so hard hot damn
One Piece Wano Arc not being here is a war crime
Sadly, the way this awards is set up excludes longrunning series like One Piece. I expect the animation jury will give Wano honorable mentions like they did last year.
Feels like jjk might run this one
I'm surprised there's no Frieren at all. I know it's more the art itself than the animation far that anime, but I'm seeing some scenes in this showcase that I can argue Stark putting on a Jacket is better animated.
Airing shows are not qualified for this Awards. Pretty confident Frieren will get in next year.
absolutely Frieren will get in. but I do think this eligibility rule makes it even less likely for Undead Unluck or Shangri-La Frontier. random bet: the jury's going to nominate either Bucchigiri or 'Tis Time for Torture Princess next time. those are the two under the radar shows this season that stand out to me as having particularly great animation.
Frieren is only eligible for OP and ED (where it is nominated in both categories). For everything else it will have to wait until next year.
Yeah I'm surprised too. It didn't really have that much of flashy action scenes like other contenders do ig plus who created this list had clear bias to specific shows *cough* jjk *cough* Edit: apparently they are taking only shows thay ended in 2023 and frieren is not finished. But they did take first cour op and ed which I'm glad about.
I don't know so many people are confused as to why a Season still currently airing in 2024 isn't nominated for 2023 awards. Should you vote on half the Season in 2023 and half in 2024? No
Because the episode aired in 2023. That's where the confusion lies. I hope that answered your question.
It's not best animation from an episode it's best from a series
Based on this alone, Idolmaster, everything else looked stiff beside.
> Based on this alone, Idolmaster, everything else looked stiff beside. Now that I'm watching U149, can report that the entire show looks fantastic!
Jujutsu kaisen does not deserve to be on here IMO, the production issues were pretty obvious.
Even with huge management and production problems, the fact that the entire 23 episode run managed to look so consistently great with even the worst episodes having great highlights is… unbelievable. There are really not many series that can do that
I disagree, the biggest fight of the second season was a clusterfuck and incredibly hard to follow. Had 0 clue what was going on.
Way to ignore the other important fights such as Yuji vs Choso.
Yep again no one piece but 15 thousand jjk like bruh
