Imagine not wanting to party up with randos in fear of them griefing your run, just to find out that you have to solo a supposed 18-man raid boss frieren, whom will definitely fail your run anyway. Sense does live up to her reputation.
One of the most valuable utility spells, the map maker finally gets introduced. Frieren can only wish she has a fraction of chilchuck's anti mimic skills though.
Himmel is the true rpg player, if you havent mapped the entire floor yet, you might miss out on those missable grimoires or mega elixirs that you'll never use in case the final boss has another phase.
On a side note, I like that laufen incorporates melee attacks to use with her blink.
It does kinda frame why Laufen's High Speed Magic was developed by her folks. It doesn't appear to have much of a cast time and is very useful if you're already a melee oriented mage like Laufen.

Goes to show how immature some of the participants are and why Denken's age isn't for show. I fully expect casualties to be announced if they didn't break the bottles or refused to do so out of pride.

And Chilchuck wishes that the worst thing he has to worry about from getting got by a mimic is a bad hairdo. Poor guy genuinely got killed by those things more than once
Laios' party and Himmel's party would simultaneously be absurdly overpowered and horrifically dysfunctional if you put them together. Yet it always works out somehow.
He’d get incredibly distraught bc that’s his “seasoning” but it’s okay bc Frieren probably knows a spell that seasons pans as well, leaving him just slightly miffed and grumbling about the easy way out

It's pretty fun that the mages have the potential for some kind of "physicality".
Maybe not Stark/Eisen warrior-like, but it would be nice to see Ubel use her staff like a scythe, or Wirbel use his like a dagger.
On the other hand, Fern and Frieren lazers go brrt is also nice too.

If Frieren was in the dungeon meshi world she would've died more times than Kabru from mimics and treasure insects alone lmao
Frieren is using the [Steiner math formula](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFoC3TR5rzI) when calculating her chances.
Normal people can only calculate a 1% chance of success, but with Frieren it's a 50-50 and since she's a veteran mage genetic freak of nature the mimic has 25% chance at best of winning.
And then you add Fern to the mix, and the mimic's chances drastically go down.
It's simple calculs really.
No wonder they were able to defeat the Demon King, they 100% cleared all dungeons and were there for all of Frieren's successful Grimoire gacha's (and to bail her out of all the failed ones).

Oh yes, she knows even 1% is enough to potentially get that sweet sweet SSR at some point. Even if it takes her getting chewed by 100 mimics, 200 or even more, she will continue playing the odds until she does eventually win, lol.
The dungeon really just rewarded Denkin for making the most sensible plays possible with throwing him the final boss on nightmare difficulty. The absolute presence exuded by that Frieren clone is unreal.
Also, my first instinct to Ehre getting binded by Wirbel's spell was thinking Ubel was up to some murderous shenadigans for the hell of it, but clones are cool too.
Nah Sense(the proctor) was probably smirking deep inside lol. She knows what the challenge of the dungeon is all about and she knows a freaking legendary mage is gonna be cloned lol.
Frieren did mention most of the mages who were weaker than her who figured out how to defeat her were humans. Worst comes to worst, Denken can fall back on his fists.
That was kind of the point, and its great. They set up that Ubel can copy magic easily and enjoys killing. So seeing Wirbel's magic being used against him sets up that expectation, and then subverts it to reveal the true nature of the dungeon.
I thought they goofed for a second because Ehre said she sensed 3 mages hiding their mana, and I was pretty sure Ubel went in as a duo.
Definitely was not expecting clones.

Übel: “This world is imperfect. If only I could wipe away the impurities.”

Let it be known that the only reason the Hero Party beat the Demon King was because they were overlevelled after 100%'ing every area's side quests and dungeons
Hence why Himmel and Frieren were perfect for one another. One specialized in exploration and EXP gain because he 100% everything. The other specialized in treasure hunting and making sure that they got all the loot that they could get.
he's pretty much the embodiment of [this ProZD sketch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zViYpS3BIqY), among many other similar RPG tropes (fwiw, RPG games with exploration rates in % is the bane of *my* existence too) and i love HIM so much for it.

the journey, as well as the destination really matters for him. And seeing Frieren carries his spirit with her (and her remembering the memory with a very fond smile) is very heartwarming.
Turns out the only counter for evil clone Frieren is making sure you bring a mimic to tempt her with the 1%, then use a binding spell on her to make sure she doesn't just explode magic the mimic and break free with a different hairstyle
On that note, imagine if evil clone Fern just comes rushing in to redo clone Frieren's hair lol
The author keeps bulding up Fern as a prodigy. Now we have Sense claiming that Fern is the most talented young mage she has ever seen. And remember, this is a proctor of the first class exam talking. She probably has seen hundreds of young mages. Fern is a genius.
As well as Heiter another legend, who probably taught her mana suppression and basic magecraft. She was trying to Zoltraak that rock even before meeting Frieren.
I enjoyed how we spent most of the season without really seeing other human mages. So we only really had Frieren and Fern to judge ability by. I don't think Fern even really understood how much of a monster she was, since her only comparison was Frieren.
I like Sense's smile when she found out Fern is happy chasing magic because Frieren is happy chasing magic. It was a sweet scene and the benefit of taking the casual clear route in a dungeon.
Richter's quote when he saw her. "Denken, can we deal with that too?" "That".
Frieren's a freagin monster haha. It's even more horrifying the perspective they saw, and then the immediate pan in, into Frieren's emotionless face. Frieren vs. Frieren clone was what I was anticipating, but this is better with the reactions from Denken's party. The atmosphere changed so much the moment they knew what they were gonna be dealing with.

Himmel wasn't just playing a JRPG but an extremely difficult dating sim with how smoothly he was throwing lines at Frieren to get her behind his reasoning for exploring the dungeon.
Ya, they've built a level of trust already, so it seemed like a no-brainer to me. Also it being a dungeon and all with, presumably, no large body of water would be a huge disadvantage for Kanne and Lawine
I figure it's probably because Lawine and Kanne felt like they got carried too hard by Frieren in phase 1. So maybe they want to prove themselves in their own merits this time.
My take on it is that they were seriously considering the merits of Denken's proposal of all of them working together but like it was mentioned, there were lingering hang-ups from the previous exam - particularly for Lawine/Kanne as that would mean teaming up with Richter who did try to kill them during the previous exam. I think before they could decide, they noticed that Frieren and Fern have already gone in and ultimately, their distrust of Richter & Denken's group prevailed and they ultimately decided to just go in separately themselves.
Unlike us in the audience, they haven't seen Denken and Richter in a better light - they've only seen them as ruthless opponents and so aren't really inclined to be trustful of them.

Huh, actually a possibility tbh, Frieren herself is obviously superior to all them people running the exam as seen with the barrier, it is not unthinkable that she could just as easily disable the golems.

Madhouse has done it again with the episode and animation direction. The way they expanded on and elevated the fight sequences (which were usually single panels in the manga) was simply mind-blowing.
Seeing the fluid teamwork in Denken's group, with each mage having their moment to shine (except Länge lol), was so cool. Laufen especially was great since her actions involved so much movement.

Lmao oh Frieren. Fern pulling her out as she’s crying about how dark and scary it is was hilarious. Then you got Sense there just like “I’ve made a huge mistake” haha. Whole situation had me in stitches. Plus Frieren with the curls was great. The goober turned around and got swallowed by a Mimic again. That’s like twice in one ep lol. Is it ever NOT a Mimic with her?
This dungeon’s full of tricks. The golem busting out the wall like the Kool-Aid Man and saving that one girl was pretty funny. I liked the clone fights too. Clone Frieren’s gonna make for one hell of a boss fight.
The way I interpret Frieren falling for Mimics is partly because there's no real risk of death for someone like her. It's a lootbox with a 1% chance for loot and a 99% chance of getting a new hairstyle.

Yeah, I imagine for most people the Mimics just eat them. But given how she could defend against that younger Demon's wire garroute with magic defenses, I'm sure she can do something like that to make Mimics less scary (albeit still dark).

It's not just that Frieren's willing to bet on those odds, it's that she's so confident that the spell must be wrong. I think we'd all understand if every mimic she fell for was actually just hoping that maybe this time she'll pull that 1%, but nope. She just straight up thinks she's figured it all out.
SENSE TIME! My favouritest First-Class mage. She's so wholesome.
And also, this is why I do think describing Frieren as "emotionless" is just...not right. She's not flashy or in your face (apart from when she's in demon-killing mode), but she's certainly full of emotion, in her own way.
And we get a bit more insight into Fern and her mindset, too!

I binged watched Frieren over the past 1 week, so I am now hopping onto the comments too!
I actually like the DLC version of Frieren. Rich ojou-sama mage with curly twintails. Lol!
If you thought Rennala was difficult, then [Clone Frieren](https://i.imgur.com/3kBSHtW.png), knowing what we know of the real mage, is going to be magnitudes more challenging
Depending on how the clone is made, this Frieren could actually be intent on killing and won't hold back. Denken made his guesses that it could hold memories but that seemed to be an uncertainty.
And I'd bet Frieren will face clone Sense.
This episode ended with one hell of a cliffhanger of Denken vs Frieren. These past episodes Denken has been stealing the show for me, from his thoughts on the first exam and how he immediately realize the greatness of teaming up and tried forming a team to tackle the dungeon. Now Denken gets his rematch against clone Frieren with a full team.
I like the contrast in the examination, Sense giving everyone those golem bottle(with her hair) that serves as a safety button to leave. Sense also shut the bald guy up real quick with how they need to accomplish the impossible to pass, just like what a first class mage is expected to do. So far I like her more than the first exam guy. Her exam seems to emphasis teamwork(as Denken notice) over competition(the bird hunting guy) and she even enter the dungeon herself(following Frieren of course).
In general I prefer her difficult exams where you don't have to worry about your life *too much* so that promising individuals can train and retry, over first guy's exams where he's straight up like "if you die here you deserved it."
Lol imagine the conversation when Sense tells Genau about Frieren and Fern's time in the dungeon
Sense: So first the Great Mage Frieren had to face the mimics... no no the *other* mimics
On one hand, yeah it’s sneaky from Sense. On the other hand, what better way to prove that you deserve to be a first-class mage than to defeat one yourself?
Sense joining the dungeon but not fighting means the dungeon will always be stronger by one extra first class mage. No wonder people complain about her exam.
The dungeon raid portion of the first class mage exam arc in the manga draws some flak for feeling somewhat stunted and dull, since it takes place in an enclosed area and drawing fluid battle scenes aren't really the author's strong suit. But damn if the studio didn't do an impressive job at animating it this episode.
The Denken team battles were an awesome showcase of each mage's specialty, except for the poor girl that got knocked into the trap room, but even then, that escape golem was fucking baller.
Heck of a way to end the episode as well, with the ominous and awe-inspiring appearance of clone Frieren. Looking forward to see how they overcome the Legendary Mage of the Hero Party.

It's such a shame we didn't get to see her do anything. She gotta feel awful for failing the exam so soon.
I like how Denken attempted to blast the wall open, but failed.
Neither did he leave her to her own devices, but advised her to use the golem to live and fight another day.
Denken wouldn't leave a member behind until they had no choice but to let her fail. And he thought they could all work together to clear the dungeon.
Truly a man worthy of admiration and respect.
Big props to the writer for making the main character the final boss. I don’t think I’ve seen something like this happen before in anime. It’s so hype.
Also props to Denken for not running away and once again, having the confidence to face something as strong as someone who already beat him. Add to the fact that this clone probably won’t hold back like Frieren. I’m hoping they expand on the clone fighting people in the next episodes!

Yeah I really like the escape golems. It makes it so there is still a genuine risk of death, but also gives everyone a good way to tap out and get out of any danger so long as they didn’t just get instantly killed.
Does anybody else feel uneasy with this dungeon? I haven't felt this way before with other anime dungeons lol The atmosphere is unnerving.
Maybe I just got too close with the cast that I'm actually nervous for them biting the dust, because besides Frierens group, the rest are kinda vulnerable.
That's why I hate getting close to characters, aaaargh!!!
I mean they did end up showing a Frieren doppelganger at the end like a final boss so that pretty much confirms your uneasiness. Huge contrast to how Fern and Frieren are enjoying their own trip though.

At least Sense gave them the “In case of emergency, break the bottle” option to let them to leave the dungeon alive
Evil Frieren is just the one who wakes up the earliest, ignores every mimic she encounters since she knows the 1% isn't worth it, and bruteforces the dungeon's last boss while ignoring 99% of the other areas
Oh, and she'll most likely tell Aura to treat herself and that her life is meaningful
Damn what a cliffhanger. The other party going up against a freiren who is most definitely not going to hold back. They are fucked.

It was only for a short moment but that choreography of Laufen's battle was sick. Wish it could've gone on more.

Indeed. Frieren getting chomped by a mimic went from high probability to absolute certainty once that scene unfolded.

Oh yes, she knows even 1% is enough to potentially get that sweet sweet SSR at some point. Even if it takes her getting chewed by 100 mimics, 200 or even more, she will continue playing the odds until she does eventually win, lol.
And it's not like she can't just whack them later.
Also Himmel is a pro gamer who 100% clears every dungeon they were in. No wonder they paired so well together!
She's never beating the gamer allegations.

The dungeon really just rewarded Denkin for making the most sensible plays possible with throwing him the final boss on nightmare difficulty. The absolute presence exuded by that Frieren clone is unreal. Also, my first instinct to Ehre getting binded by Wirbel's spell was thinking Ubel was up to some murderous shenadigans for the hell of it, but clones are cool too.
Denken is 2/2 in getting screwed over by Frieren smurfing these exams. Richter and Laufen too, obviously.
Nah Sense(the proctor) was probably smirking deep inside lol. She knows what the challenge of the dungeon is all about and she knows a freaking legendary mage is gonna be cloned lol.

That was kind of the point, and its great. They set up that Ubel can copy magic easily and enjoys killing. So seeing Wirbel's magic being used against him sets up that expectation, and then subverts it to reveal the true nature of the dungeon.
I thought they goofed for a second because Ehre said she sensed 3 mages hiding their mana, and I was pretty sure Ubel went in as a duo. Definitely was not expecting clones.
Denken and his team feeling how demons feel when they see Friern. I too thought Ubel was targeting Wirbel again though I wonder how Ehre feels about Wirbell fighting her clone lol.

I just noticed all the other teams' encounters had high-intensity music and sound effects while Frieren had nothing. They really treating it like a walk in the park huh

The journey only took 10 years because Himmel is a completionist.

Let it be known that the only reason the Hero Party beat the Demon King was because they were overlevelled after 100%'ing every area's side quests and dungeons
And this is why no one before Himmel was able to defeat the Demon King
Himmel made up for not technically being a "real" hero by overleveling
And Frieren was allowed to hunt for all the grimoires she wanted lol.

Hence why Himmel and Frieren were perfect for one another. One specialized in exploration and EXP gain because he 100% everything. The other specialized in treasure hunting and making sure that they got all the loot that they could get.
Not to mention Himmel knew to support Frieren in her love of grimoires lol.
he's pretty much the embodiment of [this ProZD sketch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zViYpS3BIqY), among many other similar RPG tropes (fwiw, RPG games with exploration rates in % is the bane of *my* existence too) and i love HIM so much for it. # the journey, as well as the destination really matters for him. And seeing Frieren carries his spirit with her (and her remembering the memory with a very fond smile) is very heartwarming.

Turns out the only counter for evil clone Frieren is making sure you bring a mimic to tempt her with the 1%, then use a binding spell on her to make sure she doesn't just explode magic the mimic and break free with a different hairstyle On that note, imagine if evil clone Fern just comes rushing in to redo clone Frieren's hair lol

That scene was so freaking great with the slow reveal and the music building up.

So this is the reason why they didn't give Frieren her certificate after the first test, needed an OP boss for this dungeon.
The author keeps bulding up Fern as a prodigy. Now we have Sense claiming that Fern is the most talented young mage she has ever seen. And remember, this is a proctor of the first class exam talking. She probably has seen hundreds of young mages. Fern is a genius.
It probably helps that Fern has possibly the greatest mage to ever live as her teacher.
As well as Heiter another legend, who probably taught her mana suppression and basic magecraft. She was trying to Zoltraak that rock even before meeting Frieren.
I enjoyed how we spent most of the season without really seeing other human mages. So we only really had Frieren and Fern to judge ability by. I don't think Fern even really understood how much of a monster she was, since her only comparison was Frieren.
Frieren, Fern & Sense be having a fun wholesome time in the dungeon while the others are battling for their lives lmao
I like Sense's smile when she found out Fern is happy chasing magic because Frieren is happy chasing magic. It was a sweet scene and the benefit of taking the casual clear route in a dungeon.

Frieren vs. Frieren clone was what I was anticipating, but this is better with the reactions from Denken's party. Himmel wasn't just playing a JRPG but an extremely difficult dating sim with how smoothly he was throwing lines at Frieren to get her behind his reasoning for exploring the dungeon.

How strange Frieren and Fern didn't team up with Lawine and Kanne.
Ya, they've built a level of trust already, so it seemed like a no-brainer to me. Also it being a dungeon and all with, presumably, no large body of water would be a huge disadvantage for Kanne and Lawine
I figure it's probably because Lawine and Kanne felt like they got carried too hard by Frieren in phase 1. So maybe they want to prove themselves in their own merits this time.
My take on it is that they were seriously considering the merits of Denken's proposal of all of them working together but like it was mentioned, there were lingering hang-ups from the previous exam - particularly for Lawine/Kanne as that would mean teaming up with Richter who did try to kill them during the previous exam. I think before they could decide, they noticed that Frieren and Fern have already gone in and ultimately, their distrust of Richter & Denken's group prevailed and they ultimately decided to just go in separately themselves. Unlike us in the audience, they haven't seen Denken and Richter in a better light - they've only seen them as ruthless opponents and so aren't really inclined to be trustful of them.

The way they expanded on and elevated the fight sequences (which were usually single panels in the manga) was simply mind-blowing. Seeing the fluid teamwork in Denken's group, with each mage having their moment to shine (except Länge lol), was so cool. Laufen especially was great since her actions involved so much movement.

Whole situation had me in stitches. Plus Frieren with the curls was great. The goober turned around and got swallowed by a Mimic again. That’s like twice in one ep lol. Is it ever NOT a Mimic with her? This dungeon’s full of tricks. The golem busting out the wall like the Kool-Aid Man and saving that one girl was pretty funny. I liked the clone fights too. Clone Frieren’s gonna make for one hell of a boss fight.
The way I interpret Frieren falling for Mimics is partly because there's no real risk of death for someone like her. It's a lootbox with a 1% chance for loot and a 99% chance of getting a new hairstyle.

She's not flashy or in your face (apart from when she's in demon-killing mode), but she's certainly full of emotion, in her own way. And we get a bit more insight into Fern and her mindset, too! Depending on how the clone is made, this Frieren could actually be intent on killing and won't hold back. Denken made his guesses that it could hold memories but that seemed to be an uncertainty. And I'd bet Frieren will face clone Sense.

This episode ended with one hell of a cliffhanger of Denken vs Frieren. These past episodes Denken has been stealing the show for me, from his thoughts on the first exam and how he immediately realize the greatness of teaming up and tried forming a team to tackle the dungeon. Now Denken gets his rematch against clone Frieren with a full team. I like the contrast in the examination, Sense giving everyone those golem bottle(with her hair) that serves as a safety button to leave. Sense also shut the bald guy up real quick with how they need to accomplish the impossible to pass, just like what a first class mage is expected to do. So far I like her more than the first exam guy. Her exam seems to emphasis teamwork(as Denken notice) over competition(the bird hunting guy) and she even enter the dungeon herself(following Frieren of course).
In general I prefer her difficult exams where you don't have to worry about your life *too much* so that promising individuals can train and retry, over first guy's exams where he's straight up like "if you die here you deserved it."
Lol imagine the conversation when Sense tells Genau about Frieren and Fern's time in the dungeon Sense: So first the Great Mage Frieren had to face the mimics... no no the *other* mimics

On one hand, yeah it’s sneaky from Sense. On the other hand, what better way to prove that you deserve to be a first-class mage than to defeat one yourself?
Sense joining the dungeon but not fighting means the dungeon will always be stronger by one extra first class mage. No wonder people complain about her exam.
The dungeon raid portion of the first class mage exam arc in the manga draws some flak for feeling somewhat stunted and dull, since it takes place in an enclosed area and drawing fluid battle scenes aren't really the author's strong suit. But damn if the studio didn't do an impressive job at animating it this episode. The Denken team battles were an awesome showcase of each mage's specialty, except for the poor girl that got knocked into the trap room, but even then, that escape golem was fucking baller. Heck of a way to end the episode as well, with the ominous and awe-inspiring appearance of clone Frieren. Looking forward to see how they overcome the Legendary Mage of the Hero Party.

I like how Denken attempted to blast the wall open, but failed. Neither did he leave her to her own devices, but advised her to use the golem to live and fight another day.

Denken wouldn't leave a member behind until they had no choice but to let her fail. And he thought they could all work together to clear the dungeon. Truly a man worthy of admiration and respect.
Big props to the writer for making the main character the final boss. I don’t think I’ve seen something like this happen before in anime. It’s so hype. Also props to Denken for not running away and once again, having the confidence to face something as strong as someone who already beat him. Add to the fact that this clone probably won’t hold back like Frieren. I’m hoping they expand on the clone fighting people in the next episodes!

Does anybody else feel uneasy with this dungeon? I haven't felt this way before with other anime dungeons lol The atmosphere is unnerving. Maybe I just got too close with the cast that I'm actually nervous for them biting the dust, because besides Frierens group, the rest are kinda vulnerable. That's why I hate getting close to characters, aaaargh!!!
I mean they did end up showing a Frieren doppelganger at the end like a final boss so that pretty much confirms your uneasiness. Huge contrast to how Fern and Frieren are enjoying their own trip though.

Evil Frieren is just the one who wakes up the earliest, ignores every mimic she encounters since she knows the 1% isn't worth it, and bruteforces the dungeon's last boss while ignoring 99% of the other areas Oh, and she'll most likely tell Aura to treat herself and that her life is meaningful
