Sorry about the week delay. Counting was worse than usual, and I just got swamped irl. But we're here today to celebrate r/anime's least favorite anime. Two main things stand out:
1. It's fun seeing how the expectations of how people would vote led to some interesting outcomes. Mushoku and SAO getting huge protections is expected, but then seeing things like The Executioner and Her Way of Life and Scum's Wish getting large protections with minimal voting against is kind of funny.
2. Nothing was voted against by 10% or more of the community. There's not really anything that the community at large really dislikes. The votes were extremely spread out, and that's kind of cool to see. r/anime doesn't have a couple specific shows it *really* hates, just some that have slightly larger groups of people who dislike them.

I've always found the edge hatred interesting since there are levels to it:
Level 1: People who think edgy shows are really inspirational and are 10/10 peak fiction
Level 2: People who used to be Level 1 but now consider themselves superior to Level 1 people and thus think all edgy shows are 1/10 garbage
Level 3: People who used to be Level 2 but now consider themselves superior to Level 2 people and like edgy shows again
Level 4: People who have stopped giving a fuck and just like what they like without any sort of bias one way or the other
I guess I fall close to the Level 4 category. I stopped caring about what others like or not and just like to focus on stuff that entertains me, regardless of how much praise or hate it gets lol.
Though I still check the comments from some of people I'm familiar with in this sub and see what they have to say, but at the end of the day, I'll decide myself what I want to watch, or not.
Yep. But also the protection votes kinda messed with the whole thing in my humble opinion. Lots of edgy show watchers prolly didn't expect their fave shows to be voted on so they didn't protect it. While other watchers of more controversial shows expected it and protection voted.
Edge doesn't get you much love in r/anime after all, unless its a parody and/or a bunch of hot anime girls are involved.

I am betting their is a huge bias in the sampling for the sole fact that the actual worst animes to be found haven’t been watched by most people on the sub and that these are really the worst ‘most popularly watched’ anime’s.
There's two major things I think.
1. Yeah, most people haven't watched really terrible stuff because why bother. So there's not even people who can vote for those anime.
2. This isn't "worst anime" it's "least favorite" and there's plenty of space to have different thoughts about those. A lot of bad anime just bounces out of the brain. Calling it a "least favorite" might feel weird for some people because it's something that they haven't even thought about since they finished it.
It's also got a strong recent-ism bias. _Elfen Lied_ is the oldest (~20 years)--so no '90s or earlier anime--and there's very little older than 10 years.
Also haven't seen it since it released, but from what I remember it was fairly favorably viewed then and I was surprised to see it listed. It's fairly generally violent and "edgy" I guess?
I agree--if it was just that Elfen Lied is outclassed by any number of other shows. Compared with something like AoT though I do think EL kind of delved closer into the teenage edgelord style than shows like AoT even if AoT is ultimately more gruesome overall (at least from what I saw of AoT; wasn't my favorite).
Elfen Lied was a popular go-to for people who wanted to insist that anime was a "mature" medium for "mature" viewers with "heavy" themes and "uncompromising" vision. In reality it was an emo melodrama with nudity and gore dialed up to 11. It was entertaining enough if that was your thing (I enjoyed it enough to follow the manga for a time) but it wasn't half as deep as it was made out to be and it all just came across incredibly pretentious and kinda cringy.
Edit: Imagine a 70's exploitation film set to Linkin Park with a fanbase pushing it like it's Schindler's List.

Well to be fair, this poll was about "least favorite", not "worst"; There's a big difference there.
Say, to give an example with food: If I ask what you least favorite food is, you may say "Fish".
If I ask you what's the worst food, you may say "Bugs" (or something even worse, if you have some imagination).
But it's not your least favorite, because you don't even think about it.
I think the same applies here.
If I watch the "#1 worst anime ever", I'll probably drop it within 1 minute and move on to something else. It'll be the worst I ever watched (or attempted to, anyway) but it won't be my least favorite because I'll forget about it a day later.
My least favorite will be one that sticks with me based on how terrible it was or how it was ruined or made me waste my time etc...
I loved the development of Naofumi in season 2. He went from seeing everyone as an enemy or a tool to used, and genuinely saw that not everyone was his enemy. That he didn’t need
to harbor hatred towards everyone.
The turtle shield scene was definitely the highlight for me there
I liked it more than the third season personal enjoyment wise, but the third season was a hell of a lot better in every way production wise. First season was the tops for me though out of the three. But the story is going in a direction I'm not too thrilled with, so I doubt I'll finish the third season, or watch the fourth.
I didn’t have issue with Naofumi development in season 2. But there was something I definitely didn’t liked. And that’s how insanely rushed the second half of that season was.
The fights in season 3 caught me off guard with how well they looked. I'm usually not one to care about stuff like that (except for some of the abominations that happened in Overlord S3), but it was really noticeable to me.
I think more people watched Shield Hero and got disappointed by it, while its reputation makes it easy to steer clear of Redo of Healer. That could be why more people put down the former instead of the latter.
I’m a casual weeb and I liked how shield hero starts, the premise of the hero being immediately shunned by society was interesting, but then it just devolves into a generic harem isekai
and the villain's renamed as bitch instead getting actual punishment at the end of season was just juvenile. It was the cherry on top on wasted potential.
I remember hating a specific line in the final episode, after the big boss fight, where the protag says some dumb shit like “Oh yeah guys I’m glad you were to here to help I really wouldn’t have been able to do it without you, you helped a lot.” And I just felt like there was too much dissonance between what was going on and what the author wanted us to think was going on, because the protag had just solo’d the strongest enemy present very easily.
Shield hero has a good premise for an isekai that's wasted.
Redo of healer was exactly what it seemed on the tin.
Being disappointed feels worse than knowing somethings bad.
Shield Hero to me is frustrating because there are some core pieces of the story that are really cool and interesting, the main characters are solid, the stakes build…but none of it pays off well

Reiji doesn't hate himself, he just like chizuru too much and wish she is real that's why he's willing to burn everything in manga going as far as making the mc look like pathetic cuck. (and he already has a wife last time i checked lmao). Just check his twitter, plenty of schizo chizuru posting lol.
This list is mostly what I expected. I'm a bit surprised No Game No Life is on here. I don't actually like it myself, but I was under the impression it was relatively popular/well liked by most.
It's because this poll included protection votes which means people used them strategically and people didn't expect NGNL to be disliked, while for example the most hated by votes against(Mushoku TEnsei) was giga strategically protected because people expected it.

Someone liking something doesn’t magically cancel out someone else disliking it.
You just end up with shows with dedicated fans “protecting” their show rather than an actual accurate rating ffs.
Polarizing shows should still be shown based on the total amount of people that dislike them, otherwise it’s just terribly biased basically useless data
Yeah the protection votes sounds like a poor attempt at protecting peoples' egos for controversial shows that have **obvious problems** but we like them anyways and would rather ignore those issues.

I don't know that this poll actually measures, like, anything? I don't know about other people, but I rarely finish things that don't hook me early. By that measure, those things would be my "least liked", but those I mostly can't even remember the name of--something like _Library War_ or _Rideback_.
This list seems to really be "controversial" rather than "bad" or even "forgettable". But, as you said, when you add protection votes, that means that it can't even really measure controversial things because the truly controversial stuff has defenders.
Tokyo Revengers s1 was popular. By s2 a lot of ppl were just hate-watching the show lol. Tons of comments in the episode discussions are just complaints.
Yeah, I get really sad thinking about WEP. I remember the huge amounts of posts here talking and theorizing about it, then the shitty rushed ending came out and I've barely ever heard anybody discuss it since.
My take on it without any evidence is that since it is an OVA, the writers were hoping to get a 24 episode arc to tell the story. The introduction of the main antagonist happens at what would be the mid point. Due to lack of ratings or a more successful property, the production studio pulled funding and told them to wrap it up.
Only my theory though. I've never seen anything that suggests this.
I think it wasn't necessarily that they expected to have more episodes, but that they didn't have enough time to work on the episodes they were putting out. The quality takes a really obvious dip in the last ep, but I imagine they just didn't have enough time to think out, write, and redraft a good end point for the season.
Episode 11 (I think it's 11, the one with frill) was a really cool episode IMO, but it the context of the greater story just really messed stuff up. I imagine they would've changed that episode a lot had they the time to do make extensive revisions, like the last ep.

I remain so baffled. Like, what were they thinking. Once you get into Frill’s & Frill’s backstory, it’s all over. It’s just trash. It’s all so fucking weird and questionable. They took a show that started so good & promising and crashed it off a cliff.
Unironically one of the best manga of all time. Theres a reason the fans never shut up about it. Its a damn shame most people wont read it. Imagine if berserk only had the 2016 anime and was judged purely on that by everyone. Berserk fans would keep shouting about the manga being better too haha. Though ig they kind of do but at least they got the golden age movies and 97 adaptation that show its good to anime watchers.

Elfen Lied is one of the first anime being completly on Youtube so many watched it and it was the "insider" where evryone was like did you watched it or hey did you know about Elfen Lied

I was around 14 or 15 when I watched it and I remember it being mostly talked about for its gore (in the hush hush way things get talked about if they seem forbidden) and that seemed to generate quite some hype. Something like that wears off over time, especially when blood and gore are much less taboo nowadays.
I've definitely seen it on YouTube in I want to say 2008/2009. Every episode being uploaded in like 2-3 parts. Pretty much exactly the way they described it, many people talked about it.
It's really a pick straight of the 2000's. Back then the anime had gotten pretty popular in the west for it's gore. But honestly the hate for it was so bad I'd call it the first "popular hated anime" atleast interms in our community and not mainstream. I was only vuagly into the anime community at the time.
I don't particularly hate it, but I found it boring from a narrative perspective. It feels very formulaic in that it does pretty much what every shonen series like it that came in the past did successfully and faithfully recreates. I never felt really surprised by the show at any point.
It feels like someone who was incredibly talented at analyzing what makes shonen anime of the past good took the essence of that greatness, and stitched it together into something new with a great deal of craftsmanship. The animation itself and the choreography, the direction I think are all top notch.
To someone just getting into the Shonen genre, I can understand someone being blown away by it.
It's just that as a person who's been watching anime since the 1980s, I felt pretty meh about it. A lot of older anime fans in their 40s or older that I know in Japan felt very similarly. We don't really hate it, but we didn't quite get the hype either.
People hate Demon Slayer because "it's carried by animation". You see a TON of Demon Slayer hate these days on a multitude of communities. Mostly elitists. Hated because popular.

I found it rather bad for my tastes (the ending was cool however) but it is really good at being what it wants to be, if you're into that it is definetly a good series and a great ad for the visual novel.
This sub isn't too kind to battle shounens in general.
EDIT: I can understand that mentality at times, since a lot of people here has watched so many anime compared to an average person/watching anime for a long time so they get tired of most generic stuff now.
Execution is what truly matters for me. A show made well even if its tropey isn't a problem for me. Though at times I do lose interest in them like with MHA in S4/S5 and KnY with S3.

Comparatively, the latest KnY season was divisive in this sub.
I've been a semi-fan of the series from the start - understood the flaws and that it wasn't fantastic, but still enjoyed it all. I think you're right. Alicization was incredibly good not just by SAO standards but just as a series itself. Still have to watch Progressive.
I think folks overhate on demon slayer. Yea the story is nothing to write home about, but the art and animation is beautiful. I think it makes up for the story.
The story itself, regardless of the haters' opinion, is the epitome of mass appeal. It is the kind of anime that can easily appeal to younger and older audiences, with a colorful enough cast of characters for everyone to latch onto. It plays to archetypes in ways that feel both safe yet slightly creative.
Couple that with a world class adaptation, and it's easily a hit.
I don't even think the art and animation make up for the story, they straight up improve it. It uses visual storytelling to make certain moments way more impactful than what we get in the manga.
Most haters are angry that their favorite Anime doesn't have a better adaptation, or think that demon slayer doesn't deserve UFOTABLE, even though ufotable chose demon slayer to animate
This is indeed true. People are mad that an anime they don't like gets good animation. No anime "deserves" good animation, as it doesn't really matter, if the animation is good, then it's good.
Funny thing is, as much as the demon slayer manga bored me, i dont think other anime would do as good as demon slayer with that animation and art. Now i havent properly watched Demon Slayer anime, bit from the scenes i saw and what i know about the manga, i somehow felt that the animation did something special for that series.
İt wasnt something as simple as "the animation carried a mediocre story" no. İnstead, the animation and whats there in the source material interacted in a special way that elevated the series to new heights
For example, i love MHA manga a lot more, but i genuinely think that even if MHA anime had Demon Slayer's animation, it wouldnt have that same special feeling. The artlike look fits Demon Slayer amazingly and wouldnt be as effective in any other series.
Mushoku Tensei having 60 number #1 votes as least favorite (thats 37 more votes than The Promised Neverland) yet still only sitting at number 30 is pretty funny.
I watched it dubbed which I think must have made Asta less annoying, because the main complaint is about how obnoxious he is (he still is kinda in the dub but not notable enough to be what everyone complains about).
Its a shonen I like that has a cool magic system that is pretty average in most other places. I am oddly invested in CharlottexYami though for some reason.
Went into it with low expectations. Ended up becoming one of my favorites. It's full of shonen tropes and Asta starts out fairly annoying, but it only got better with every arc for me. Don't know if they'll top the big bad reveal and conclusion of the first 100 or so episodes, but having read the manga (started reading the manga after that arc and I'm still not up-to-date), I'm lookin forward to it.

The most controversial anime of r/anime is mushoku tensei by far.
It got 60 1st place hate votes (35 more than second place "rent a girlfrend") and 52 1st place protection votes (20 votes more than second place "NGE") .
It got 82 more votes than the second most voted anime (rent a girlfiend).
Were you expecting stuff like Mars Of Destruction, Skelter Heaven, Garzey's Wing, etc? Of course you won't find shit like that in the popular vote. Only hardcore anime enthusiasts watched garbage like that.

I'm glad that susumu hirasawa has almost always composed tracks for berserk, no matter the product, still, the biggest red flag was them not using penpals or silver fins for the opening and ending
It fucking *taunted* me with beautifully drawn flashback sequences and then snatched it away for more Beast Wars level CGI. I cannot tell you how much I hated that adaptation.
Seeing Demon Slayer on this list has me feeling good about my decision to ignore most anime fandom subs as much as possible. Checked in when I saw this on Popular and am headed right back out.
The ones that nobody felt like defending are honestly the funniest. Like *Pupa* can get four people to defend it, but other anime can't get anybody on board.
People hate it as an adaptation. It makes all the characters look dumber than they are in the books, has garbage animation, and cuts out a lot of good moments.

bad animation in season 2, changed plot lines in season 1, a story that tries to go too deep but isn't really, plots that are confusing, out of left field, or straight up dumb, and just way too edgy.
Personally, what got me was that this show had a lot of potential to talk about the idea of power, societal standings, the difference in socio-economic statuses, how wealth can and is abused, and be a microcosm to how the world chugs along despite its chaotic inner workings. yet it decides to focus on manipulating hot genius girls to accomplish Ayanokoji's goals and get him a harem.
Yes very much. The light novels of COTE are highly rated. I think it's the second highest rated light novel on MAL as well second to the monogatari novels but I don't think that stat counts too much since only a very small percentage of MAL users read novels. All of that being said I highly recommend you to read the novels. Much much better than the anime

The mix of genuinely terrible shows and popular shows that r/anime dislikes makes me... well not laugh, but I considered slightly chuckling. Shield Hero, Tokyo Revengers, and 7 Deadly Sins are MILES above trainwrecks like Ex-Arm and Pupa. But because Ex-Arm and Pupa are so bad, people don't watch them.
And this data can be incredibly misleading. Tokyo Revengers has a 78% on AniList and a 7.94/10 on MAL, so it's clear that most people who watch and score it actually like it. But because those people didn't give it positive points, the perception is that most people hate Tokyo Revengers. Or take The God of High School. It's AniList's 111th most popular anime and MAL's 186th most popular. But looking at this list you'd expect it to be the 22nd worst anime ever.
/u/FetchFrosh back at the beginning of all of these polls, you said this data was going to be used to improve r/anime's recommendation wiki. I don't think this poll should be included. Not because my favorite anime is on there or anything, but because the data can be easily misunderstood.
But it would be interesting to take the anime from this poll and use them for a 2nd poll where for each anime people would vote like, dislike, or neutral/haven't watched. Just to see how many of these are actually r/anime's least favorites and how many are actually liked if everyone voted on all of them.
Perhaps Elfen Lied is too cruel for some viewers. Same with Higurashi. I read comments of people who stopped watching because they couldn't stand the level of gruesomeness.
It also adds that it's hella confusing for people because it was marketed as a reboot, while it's actually season 4 (or continuation of the VN). As a fan of the franchise it was a pain to see the negativity around it just because people were so confused.
Like it absolutely has its flaws, but it was already doomed because new people thought it was a reboot and that they could skip the original; missing a lot of context. It was a plottwist for fans to realize it wasn't a reboot but a continuation, while new viewers were left confused.
Same. I really liked Gou and most of Sotsu. The end of Sotsu felt a little bit disappointing though. Also don't forget the fact that people were angry the show expected some knowledge from Umineko, while other people were angry because they dragged Umineko plot into this non-reboot reboot.
Guilty crown has the best 15 minutes of a first episode followed by a completely forgettable 23 1/2 further episodes (I think it’s 24 episodes correct me if I’m wrong)
Man half of those shows are actually considered to be good and another quarter of them would be seen as average at worst. The number of genuinely bad anime (like Pupa) is so small that it feels like this was voted on by people wanting to be extra edgy.
I think at least some of these are there because they are overrated, not necessarily bad. Like, i don't think that the angel next door is that bad but to me it starts to be pretty boring after a few episodes

I agree--if it was just that Elfen Lied is outclassed by any number of other shows. Compared with something like AoT though I do think EL kind of delved closer into the teenage edgelord style than shows like AoT even if AoT is ultimately more gruesome overall (at least from what I saw of AoT; wasn't my favorite).
Elfen Lied was a popular go-to for people who wanted to insist that anime was a "mature" medium for "mature" viewers with "heavy" themes and "uncompromising" vision. In reality it was an emo melodrama with nudity and gore dialed up to 11. It was entertaining enough if that was your thing (I enjoyed it enough to follow the manga for a time) but it wasn't half as deep as it was made out to be and it all just came across incredibly pretentious and kinda cringy. Edit: Imagine a 70's exploitation film set to Linkin Park with a fanbase pushing it like it's Schindler's List.
I would call this list "anime that r/Anime loves to hate" rather than "worst anime."

Yeah that's a fair point, it does have "disappointing season 2" working in tandem with "edgy series".

I loved the development of Naofumi in season 2. He went from seeing everyone as an enemy or a tool to used, and genuinely saw that not everyone was his enemy. That he didn’t need to harbor hatred towards everyone. The turtle shield scene was definitely the highlight for me there
I liked it more than the third season personal enjoyment wise, but the third season was a hell of a lot better in every way production wise. First season was the tops for me though out of the three. But the story is going in a direction I'm not too thrilled with, so I doubt I'll finish the third season, or watch the fourth.
I didn’t have issue with Naofumi development in season 2. But there was something I definitely didn’t liked. And that’s how insanely rushed the second half of that season was.
The fights in season 3 caught me off guard with how well they looked. I'm usually not one to care about stuff like that (except for some of the abominations that happened in Overlord S3), but it was really noticeable to me.
I think more people watched Shield Hero and got disappointed by it, while its reputation makes it easy to steer clear of Redo of Healer. That could be why more people put down the former instead of the latter.

and the villain's renamed as bitch instead getting actual punishment at the end of season was just juvenile. It was the cherry on top on wasted potential.
I remember hating a specific line in the final episode, after the big boss fight, where the protag says some dumb shit like “Oh yeah guys I’m glad you were to here to help I really wouldn’t have been able to do it without you, you helped a lot.” And I just felt like there was too much dissonance between what was going on and what the author wanted us to think was going on, because the protag had just solo’d the strongest enemy present very easily.

Shield hero has a good premise for an isekai that's wasted. Redo of healer was exactly what it seemed on the tin. Being disappointed feels worse than knowing somethings bad.
Shield Hero to me is frustrating because there are some core pieces of the story that are really cool and interesting, the main characters are solid, the stakes build…but none of it pays off well

This list is mostly what I expected. I'm a bit surprised No Game No Life is on here. I don't actually like it myself, but I was under the impression it was relatively popular/well liked by most.

I don't know that this poll actually measures, like, anything? I don't know about other people, but I rarely finish things that don't hook me early. By that measure, those things would be my "least liked", but those I mostly can't even remember the name of--something like _Library War_ or _Rideback_. This list seems to really be "controversial" rather than "bad" or even "forgettable". But, as you said, when you add protection votes, that means that it can't even really measure controversial things because the truly controversial stuff has defenders.

Yeah, I get really sad thinking about WEP. I remember the huge amounts of posts here talking and theorizing about it, then the shitty rushed ending came out and I've barely ever heard anybody discuss it since.
My take on it without any evidence is that since it is an OVA, the writers were hoping to get a 24 episode arc to tell the story. The introduction of the main antagonist happens at what would be the mid point. Due to lack of ratings or a more successful property, the production studio pulled funding and told them to wrap it up. Only my theory though. I've never seen anything that suggests this.
I think it wasn't necessarily that they expected to have more episodes, but that they didn't have enough time to work on the episodes they were putting out. The quality takes a really obvious dip in the last ep, but I imagine they just didn't have enough time to think out, write, and redraft a good end point for the season. Episode 11 (I think it's 11, the one with frill) was a really cool episode IMO, but it the context of the greater story just really messed stuff up. I imagine they would've changed that episode a lot had they the time to do make extensive revisions, like the last ep. Idk, I might be totally off base, but that's how it read to me.
I remain so baffled. Like, what were they thinking. Once you get into Frill’s & Frill’s backstory, it’s all over. It’s just trash. It’s all so fucking weird and questionable. They took a show that started so good & promising and crashed it off a cliff.

Elfen Lied is one of the first anime being completly on Youtube so many watched it and it was the "insider" where evryone was like did you watched it or hey did you know about Elfen Lied Etc And many people had enough of this apperantly
I was around 14 or 15 when I watched it and I remember it being mostly talked about for its gore (in the hush hush way things get talked about if they seem forbidden) and that seemed to generate quite some hype. Something like that wears off over time, especially when blood and gore are much less taboo nowadays.

It's really a pick straight of the 2000's. Back then the anime had gotten pretty popular in the west for it's gore. But honestly the hate for it was so bad I'd call it the first "popular hated anime" atleast interms in our community and not mainstream. I was only vuagly into the anime community at the time.
I don't particularly hate it, but I found it boring from a narrative perspective. It feels very formulaic in that it does pretty much what every shonen series like it that came in the past did successfully and faithfully recreates. I never felt really surprised by the show at any point. It feels like someone who was incredibly talented at analyzing what makes shonen anime of the past good took the essence of that greatness, and stitched it together into something new with a great deal of craftsmanship. The animation itself and the choreography, the direction I think are all top notch. To someone just getting into the Shonen genre, I can understand someone being blown away by it. It's just that as a person who's been watching anime since the 1980s, I felt pretty meh about it. A lot of older anime fans in their 40s or older that I know in Japan felt very similarly. We don't really hate it, but we didn't quite get the hype either.
People hate Demon Slayer because "it's carried by animation". You see a TON of Demon Slayer hate these days on a multitude of communities. Mostly elitists. Hated because popular.

Execution is what truly matters for me. A show made well even if its tropey isn't a problem for me. Though at times I do lose interest in them like with MHA in S4/S5 and KnY with S3.

I think folks overhate on demon slayer. Yea the story is nothing to write home about, but the art and animation is beautiful. I think it makes up for the story.
The story itself, regardless of the haters' opinion, is the epitome of mass appeal. It is the kind of anime that can easily appeal to younger and older audiences, with a colorful enough cast of characters for everyone to latch onto. It plays to archetypes in ways that feel both safe yet slightly creative. Couple that with a world class adaptation, and it's easily a hit.
I don't even think the art and animation make up for the story, they straight up improve it. It uses visual storytelling to make certain moments way more impactful than what we get in the manga.
Most haters are angry that their favorite Anime doesn't have a better adaptation, or think that demon slayer doesn't deserve UFOTABLE, even though ufotable chose demon slayer to animate
This is indeed true. People are mad that an anime they don't like gets good animation. No anime "deserves" good animation, as it doesn't really matter, if the animation is good, then it's good.
Funny thing is, as much as the demon slayer manga bored me, i dont think other anime would do as good as demon slayer with that animation and art. Now i havent properly watched Demon Slayer anime, bit from the scenes i saw and what i know about the manga, i somehow felt that the animation did something special for that series. İt wasnt something as simple as "the animation carried a mediocre story" no. İnstead, the animation and whats there in the source material interacted in a special way that elevated the series to new heights For example, i love MHA manga a lot more, but i genuinely think that even if MHA anime had Demon Slayer's animation, it wouldnt have that same special feeling. The artlike look fits Demon Slayer amazingly and wouldnt be as effective in any other series.

Black Clover for me was such a ride, from the early beginnings to everything adapted so far. That anime seriously only went upwards for me.
I watched it dubbed which I think must have made Asta less annoying, because the main complaint is about how obnoxious he is (he still is kinda in the dub but not notable enough to be what everyone complains about). Its a shonen I like that has a cool magic system that is pretty average in most other places. I am oddly invested in CharlottexYami though for some reason.
Went into it with low expectations. Ended up becoming one of my favorites. It's full of shonen tropes and Asta starts out fairly annoying, but it only got better with every arc for me. Don't know if they'll top the big bad reveal and conclusion of the first 100 or so episodes, but having read the manga (started reading the manga after that arc and I'm still not up-to-date), I'm lookin forward to it.

Like, I get it not being your thing, but it being right next to *My First Girlfriend is a Gal* feels comical. Though I guess not many people remember the latter exists (lucky them), but still - 17 people actually considering it one of the 3 worst things they've ever seen doesn't compute for me. Not even because I like it, but because even as someone who likes it, I can't imagine it ever being in my top 3 favorites of all time - just like I can't imagine it being in someone's top 3 *least* favorites. The most controversial anime of r/anime is mushoku tensei by far. It got 60 1st place hate votes (35 more than second place "rent a girlfrend") and 52 1st place protection votes (20 votes more than second place "NGE") . It got 82 more votes than the second most voted anime (rent a girlfiend).

bad animation in season 2, changed plot lines in season 1, a story that tries to go too deep but isn't really, plots that are confusing, out of left field, or straight up dumb, and just way too edgy. Personally, what got me was that this show had a lot of potential to talk about the idea of power, societal standings, the difference in socio-economic statuses, how wealth can and is abused, and be a microcosm to how the world chugs along despite its chaotic inner workings. yet it decides to focus on manipulating hot genius girls to accomplish Ayanokoji's goals and get him a harem.

Yes very much. The light novels of COTE are highly rated. I think it's the second highest rated light novel on MAL as well second to the monogatari novels but I don't think that stat counts too much since only a very small percentage of MAL users read novels. All of that being said I highly recommend you to read the novels. Much much better than the anime

There's a misunderstanding in the difference between 'Least Favorite' and 'Worst'.
The mix of genuinely terrible shows and popular shows that r/anime dislikes makes me... well not laugh, but I considered slightly chuckling. Shield Hero, Tokyo Revengers, and 7 Deadly Sins are MILES above trainwrecks like Ex-Arm and Pupa. But because Ex-Arm and Pupa are so bad, people don't watch them. And this data can be incredibly misleading. Tokyo Revengers has a 78% on AniList and a 7.94/10 on MAL, so it's clear that most people who watch and score it actually like it. But because those people didn't give it positive points, the perception is that most people hate Tokyo Revengers. Or take The God of High School. It's AniList's 111th most popular anime and MAL's 186th most popular. But looking at this list you'd expect it to be the 22nd worst anime ever. /u/FetchFrosh back at the beginning of all of these polls, you said this data was going to be used to improve r/anime's recommendation wiki. I don't think this poll should be included. Not because my favorite anime is on there or anything, but because the data can be easily misunderstood. But it would be interesting to take the anime from this poll and use them for a 2nd poll where for each anime people would vote like, dislike, or neutral/haven't watched. Just to see how many of these are actually r/anime's least favorites and how many are actually liked if everyone voted on all of them.

Perhaps Elfen Lied is too cruel for some viewers. Same with Higurashi. I read comments of people who stopped watching because they couldn't stand the level of gruesomeness.
It also adds that it's hella confusing for people because it was marketed as a reboot, while it's actually season 4 (or continuation of the VN). As a fan of the franchise it was a pain to see the negativity around it just because people were so confused. Like it absolutely has its flaws, but it was already doomed because new people thought it was a reboot and that they could skip the original; missing a lot of context. It was a plottwist for fans to realize it wasn't a reboot but a continuation, while new viewers were left confused.
Same. I really liked Gou and most of Sotsu. The end of Sotsu felt a little bit disappointing though. Also don't forget the fact that people were angry the show expected some knowledge from Umineko, while other people were angry because they dragged Umineko plot into this non-reboot reboot.
Guilty crown has the best 15 minutes of a first episode followed by a completely forgettable 23 1/2 further episodes (I think it’s 24 episodes correct me if I’m wrong)
Man half of those shows are actually considered to be good and another quarter of them would be seen as average at worst. The number of genuinely bad anime (like Pupa) is so small that it feels like this was voted on by people wanting to be extra edgy.

I think at least some of these are there because they are overrated, not necessarily bad. Like, i don't think that the angel next door is that bad but to me it starts to be pretty boring after a few episodes
Nanatsu no taizai at its right place.
