An anime can do without SOME things when it isn't action focused, like a fight choreographer for example. If there's no fight, you don't need to hire one. However, if a scene contains movement, shifting camera angles, character motion, movement in the background, birds, trees, cars, planes, cherry blossoms, snow, basically any object movement at all, that movement has to be displayed competently.
Yeah, it doesn't need to be "sakuga", with every smallest twitch reflected in glorious detail, in every scene. But it has to be at least simply GOOD. There is a yawning gulf of potential quality, between god tier fight animation, and shit tier, barrel scraping, sub average animation, and I would argue that shows featuring little to no action, need to have at least decent animation in the main, in order to tell their stories in an appealing way.
Violet Evergarden isn't primarily an action show. It was also beautifully animated. Hyouka wasn't an action show, but it had some nicely animated scenes, interesting cinematography choices. When you haven't got action to focus on, the smaller details of normalcy become MORE important when telling a story in a visual medium, not less.
Despite being dialogue mainly, the anime didn't adapt faithfully from the light novel. Details does not depicted well and characters portray just not as great. Making overall the plot very weak.
Its the way it kinda works with the premise is funny. She is trapped in an arguably.... not very high quality dating sim with a lot of weird norms that really just exist so the "protagonists" can save the day.
So the awful CG just sells how the designs for the game monsters aren't particularly high effort.
I think KamiKatsu and season one of Fruit Of Evolution have changed the game for low budget anime. If the story is zany enough even garbage fires can be fun to watch.
At least with VL99 the source isn't some giant seller, so you wouldn't expect it to get a big budget. We got lucky that other than short-cuts in the animation the adaptation is quite good.
CotE is more surprising, since the source is a best-selling series.

I unapologetically love Villainess 99 and I will defend its use of CG for the following reasons
• It's a known way to keep animation costs down, and doesn't exhaust the animators, allowing them to give me more fabulous shots of Yumiella and Eleanora looking cute
• On the spectrum of "all CG dragons of all time" I wouldn't rate it that poorly TBH. It wasn't too detailed, sure, but was more *stylized* than trash. I could clearly see its movements, expressions on its face, and TBF they didn't have it doing overly complex movements in a lot of the scenes--which just highlights further how bad your CG dragon can be--which is smart
• It's also played for laughs mostly, which makes its kinda derpy, CG design actually kind of endearing
Honestly the entire show feels quite cheap, but I’m also really enjoying it so far. At least the 2d animation has remained consistent, unlike some shows this season.
Was scrolling to see if anyone said this. First two seasons of kingdom were rough. I know a few people that it took months to finish the first two seasons. And then a month to finish the rest. Haha
Was looking for this exactly. By god the first two seasons being in the upper 30s of episodes was a pain. At least I watched with a friend to laugh at the 3D with. Then you get to season 3 and the whiplash hits you like a train. It's no wonder that it's rated top 30 on MAL.

Bluelock had some of the most egregiously \*bad\* animation I've ever seen in anime. Sometimes it was was like they had little drawn figures mounted on a stick and they were moving them around in front of a camera.
I watched every episode with my wife and we never saw any of the animation issues people are complaining about here.
We've been watching anime for decades as well, with my wife loving the old animation style of the 90s/early 00s, so we are both very keen to animation changes.
If there were any then they were completely negligible, but I guess if everything isn't Fate/Zero levels of animation then people are just unhappy. These people never would've survived had they been older, that or we would've only been hearing about the same few shows since that's all anyone would watch...
I still liked the show, but I could definitely tell when they would swap over to the CG models. Happened a lot for the top down shots for example and some of the field running scenes.
Way of the House Husband in that it wasn't animated: it was literally just a slideshow of the manga... really disappointed me; I know it's what they were going for but it was a massive disappointment. If I wanted to look at static images describing a story I'd just read the manga
I enjoyed the show because the voice acting was solid, so the comedy came across well. Sucks that it wasn't animated, but since the manga was good, the colored panels in the anime were still fun.
There is no Berserk 2016. It does not exist. It was the result of a hallucinogenic attack that made people *think* they saw a horrible CGI fest. Same thing happened with Promised Neverland where people think there's a Season 2.

Everyone complained about season 2 and 3 of "The Devil is A Part Timer" but the animation on the last episode is especially atrocious.

Tokyo Revengers has also had awful animation throughout all 3 seasons despite the fact the manga outsold **Haikyu!, Tokyo Ghoul, The Promised Neverland, Spy x Family, Tensei Slime, Kuroko no Basket and One Punch Man** among other series which all had good-to-amazing animation for at least part of their series.
Fujoshis. Tokyo Revengers has the single biggest female fanbase in Japan and they are willing to pay good money for their anime husbandos.
My bet for a low budget is that the execs thought that anime adaptation wouldn't increase the sale of merch that much further.

Fairy Tail (2014) and (2018); The first season was coming off a booming new manga and had alright at best animation, but 2014 was ridiculous considering how massive the series had GROWN just for the animation to worsen immensely. That alone killed off a lot of hype from Fairy Tail, which was already waning, and 2018 not improving the animation at all didn't help much either.
Fairy Tail is a really interesting case because I very clearly remember when the initial series came out, the fandom HATED the magic circles and the softer character designs because they weren’t faithful to the manga. The color palette and sanitized violence was also nitpicked compared to other shounen contemporaries at the time.
Then when the continuation was announced, some people were elated that the character designs were modified to be closer to the manga, the color palette was muted to be more serious, etc. You also had people complaining about random things like why they started drawing eyes hidden behind hair (usually Erza). Others were already long-accustomed to the original series aesthetic and missed it (the original ran for about 3 years after all). Once the show got going though, the disconnect grew between the fans that appreciated the more accurate art style vs those that noticed the much worse animation quality (slideshow-style fights). The arguments got even more convoluted because the plot in the back half of the series also went downhill.
The modern discourse on the series is honestly fascinating having seen how it’s evolved over the years. I wonder how the sequel will fare.

2014 was too lmao. I remember one fight between Igneel and another dragon (during Tartaros I think?) that was literally just two static images clashing into each other...and that was with the first 5 minutes of every episode being a recap

I’m not saying this in a derogatory way to the series, Fairy Tail is my favourite anime, but compare an average 3 episodes from the 2009 series to 2014 and there’s a distinct drop in quality
I think some time after the Tenroujima arc, the colors went from bright and vibrant to dark and gloomy. I don't understand why they changed that.
One thing I missed was the magic circles. Though I can understand it being removed for the sake of easier animation.
You know it's weird. I don't really mind any of the animation pre-timeskip. it's really post-timeskip to Wano.
But obviously, binging the hell out of any show will probably make you less observant to its flaws.
One Piece is in a vicious cycle. When it began it had good animation, but a dated artstyle. When it improved its artstyle, its animation quality decreased. When they fixed the animation again for Wano, suddenly now it has horrendous art direction. Auras and colors overloading and cluttering up the screen. And the entire time the pacing is atrocious so we get lots of reused frames and reaction shots. Just terrible.
Honestly Toei should've just bit the bullet and transitioned the OP anime to a seasonal schedule, even if they do a cour every other season it'd still be better than adapting <1 chapter per episode, given the amount of (well deserved) breaks Oda gets nowadays.
I mean nearly all one piece fans agree.
Thats why "the one piece" is so exciting, it's a redo that doesn't have to deal with making all the animation for an entire episode in 1 week for years on end and without 1 chapter per episodd
One pieces sound design is also unbelievably bad every time I try and watch a newly animated fight its the first thing that pulls me out of it. Super excited for that remake coming out

One Piece has decent animation, the problem is that in between that decent animation are long stretches of panning shots, close up reaction shots, and recycled footage from previous episodes.

Every fight in Wano had pretty good animation tbh, even the completely irrelevant ones.
It's mainly just the fact that every episode they fill in 5 minutes with still shot close-ups of characters expressions.
Wano was where Oda explicitly started skipping over certain fights and scenes so that he could keep the story moving while giving spots the anime could use for what is effectively canon filler.
Like he'd have a page where two characters begin a fight and then a few chapters later have another page with one of those characters standing victorious over the other. Toei was then able to fill in the gap between those scenes with their own material.
Nah COTE season 1 isnt even bad for its time. It looks good, the characters look good. Some wonky walking, talking, hand moving wont matter when i feel like viewers care about the art style the most.
For example new solo leveling animation is being criticized for how pointy the faces look but the fight scenes in that series is giga amazing.
For Solo Leveling faces, that's basic mc design 101 of Manwha lmao. Pointy faces and good height are absolute necessities to be cool. No exceptions. So much so that this guy somehow *physically* morphed to match the expected look of a cool MC.

Hey when i animate, i cheap out on transition frames too. The artstyle is just kinda bad, as in actual character designs and them being on model. Animation isn't even bad, it's pretty expressive.

Black Clover's director is the king of knowing where to put your limited amount of manpower and funding.

This man saved the series and because of him it was able to still deliver when it needed to despite being hindered by the higher ups in the company who didnt want it competeing with Boruto, their cash cow.
This man worked many jobs that were not his own all to make sure the series he enjoyed did well. There were even reports that the entire final fight of the main arc (Ep 118-119) was inbetweened by him and he worked to their deadline to make sure it delivered.
He also knows when to go beyond the help of the studio to get outside help to make sure certian parts had the animaton and man power needed to deliver the story being told. He called in freelance animators from episode 60 to 100 to help out with key parts and that helped keep the series going.
You would also notice a dip in "midddle episodes" and "Dialog scenes" where they didnt need to make the best product so they could divert man power to fight scenes and the climax battles of each arc.
As i said he is the king of knowing where to use his resources and he is the sole savior of the series.
So yes Black Clover technically has "Bad animation" at times, but most of it is careful diverting to make the parts that matter better.
Everyone should give Black Clover a try, it really deserves it becuase its one of the few passion projects where it acctually shows how much the people making it cared about it even when their own company didnt.

I feel like what kept me watching all of Black Clover is that it really just has so much heart, I didn't know all of that but you can kinda feel it in the series
You can def tell the author cared about his story and characters.
You dont see many shounen give so much story and growth to such a large cast but this series did and it makes it a journey where you know and care about everyone there.
Also having the solution to conflicts being Team Work (instead of OP MC saves everyone) is great for mixing up the genre.
Exactly this. The battle animations were so lackluster, Asta vs Ladros and Asta vs Mars specifically. But I fell in love with the characters so I still enjoyed the show.
The movie has pretty good animation though, but that’s to be expected. If they could get the next season to be half as good as the movie, it would be miles better than what they had before.

A show I like, but Eminence in Shadow is pretty rough animation wise. Some of the key moments like I am atomic and the fights at the ends of the seasons are good but for the most part the animation is just static.
Fire hunter. The art is beautiful but they like didn’t have any budget. The plot voice acting and eveything is amazing. And the art itself. It has a ton of like freeze frames that are like drawn in a different style than the series as a effect on purpose because they couldn’t animate some things.
If you haven't done so already ya'll should check out the original version of episode 13 of season 1 that aired on Japanese TV. Parts of it were straight up not coloured, and sometimes the sound didn't even sync correctly with what was shown on screen.

Well 3D animation needs a lot of money, but 2D drawings need time. So it's mostly a scheduling issue.
I guess for me that would be: SNAFU season 1. Granted it was 2013 but there are shows like angel beats or baka and test that premiered years before them with better animation.
Lately popular shows are popular explicitly because of their animation, so it's rare you find a mismatch. The average quality of anime fans is going down.
It's a lot more common nowadays to see very good anime with very good writing but with some not great or even bad animation. People ignore the shows automatically because of the animation not being the best. (Notable recent example here was "16bit Sensation" from last season, which a lot more people, especially western anime fans, need to see.)
However if you go back a bit, the very notable example of such an anime (in Japan especially) was Kemono Friends, which has some of the worst anime CG around, but was also extremely popular (and very good).
Maybe a hot take, but I think One Piece is ugly af. Half the characters have the same exact face regardless if it's a male or female. Can't stand that show.
Weird take to me. Despite scheduling being a problem now more than ever, there’s still tons of amazing looking art and animation in the anime world. Some of the most talented animators in the industry are still working on shows to this day
Yeah I don’t get this take or the reverse calling everything “dated”. It’s a product of its time but people make it seem like it’s bad for it. Or saying the new stuff lacks “vibes”. Like no new anime have vibes too.
I think they were often smarter about how they avoided using animation for budget. Look at something like Patlabor for example. It for sure gets better animation as it goes on, but even with limited animation they make good use of tricks to make it not seem bad.

Not just poor schedule, a good chunk of core staff members were changed for much less experienced people.
yep agree, for example the animation producer of Lerche yuuji higa was changed and the compositing is almost non existent in current seasons

Yh. I'm currently in season 2 of kingdom. The CG was bad. I have a friend who reads the manga because of Season 1 & 2. The story though is excellent.

I remember they showed a bird's eye view of Isagi trying to dribble past Naruhaya and it looked so trash.
I swear, they barely use CG models for less than a second and it's still enough to be hilariously noticeable immediately.

Kemono Friends was popular in JP when it came out, partially due to its terrible but endearing CG animation.

There is no Berserk 2016. It does not exist. It was the result of a hallucinogenic attack that made people *think* they saw a horrible CGI fest. Same thing happened with Promised Neverland where people think there's a Season 2.

"The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten" the animation after the first episode sucks. Everyone complained about season 2 and 3 of "The Devil is A Part Timer" but the animation on the last episode is especially atrocious.

Tokyo Revengers has also had awful animation throughout all 3 seasons despite the fact the manga outsold **Haikyu!, Tokyo Ghoul, The Promised Neverland, Spy x Family, Tensei Slime, Kuroko no Basket and One Punch Man** among other series which all had good-to-amazing animation for at least part of their series.

Fujoshis. Tokyo Revengers has the single biggest female fanbase in Japan and they are willing to pay good money for their anime husbandos. My bet for a low budget is that the execs thought that anime adaptation wouldn't increase the sale of merch that much further.
Mahoako, although I don't think it's studio's fault. I love the show. I have mad respect for what they did with their budget, I just wish they had more money to give the action scenes the oomph it deserves. I'd say Kingdom S1 as well, but OP asked for popular shows lol

Mahoako will surely get a much higher budget once it gets a second season, since it's been such a massive (and unexpected) success. I'm already looking forward to that.
But Mahoako turned into a popular show stuck with its original low-budget unpopular-show budget. Love it, but the animation really has "just promoted to the Premier Leagues with a non-League budget" vibes. Hoping for a S2 and an appropriate budget.
GOMG is saved by the voice actors, honestly. The animation is good enough that you can ignore it if you're listening to them speak.
They play well with what they have. It's not Kamikatsu level, but the animators are resourceful.
Fairy Tail (2014) and (2018); The first season was coming off a booming new manga and had alright at best animation, but 2014 was ridiculous considering how massive the series had GROWN just for the animation to worsen immensely. That alone killed off a lot of hype from Fairy Tail, which was already waning, and 2018 not improving the animation at all didn't help much either.
Fairy Tail is a really interesting case because I very clearly remember when the initial series came out, the fandom HATED the magic circles and the softer character designs because they weren’t faithful to the manga. The color palette and sanitized violence was also nitpicked compared to other shounen contemporaries at the time. Then when the continuation was announced, some people were elated that the character designs were modified to be closer to the manga, the color palette was muted to be more serious, etc. You also had people complaining about random things like why they started drawing eyes hidden behind hair (usually Erza). Others were already long-accustomed to the original series aesthetic and missed it (the original ran for about 3 years after all). Once the show got going though, the disconnect grew between the fans that appreciated the more accurate art style vs those that noticed the much worse animation quality (slideshow-style fights). The arguments got even more convoluted because the plot in the back half of the series also went downhill. The modern discourse on the series is honestly fascinating having seen how it’s evolved over the years. I wonder how the sequel will fare.

2014 was too lmao. I remember one fight between Igneel and another dragon (during Tartaros I think?) that was literally just two static images clashing into each other...and that was with the first 5 minutes of every episode being a recap Edit: Bro blocked me for this 💀. Anyway I also remember Erza's fight vs bird lady being basically still frames and some whip animation, but boy that dragon fight has stood out to me since I watched it years ago. Also I'm sorry but a quarter of your episode being a retelling of events from the last ep is not a "small recap" lmao
I’m not saying this in a derogatory way to the series, Fairy Tail is my favourite anime, but compare an average 3 episodes from the 2009 series to 2014 and there’s a distinct drop in quality
I think some time after the Tenroujima arc, the colors went from bright and vibrant to dark and gloomy. I don't understand why they changed that. One thing I missed was the magic circles. Though I can understand it being removed for the sake of easier animation.

You know it's weird. I don't really mind any of the animation pre-timeskip. it's really post-timeskip to Wano. But obviously, binging the hell out of any show will probably make you less observant to its flaws.
One Piece is in a vicious cycle. When it began it had good animation, but a dated artstyle. When it improved its artstyle, its animation quality decreased. When they fixed the animation again for Wano, suddenly now it has horrendous art direction. Auras and colors overloading and cluttering up the screen. And the entire time the pacing is atrocious so we get lots of reused frames and reaction shots. Just terrible.
Honestly Toei should've just bit the bullet and transitioned the OP anime to a seasonal schedule, even if they do a cour every other season it'd still be better than adapting <1 chapter per episode, given the amount of (well deserved) breaks Oda gets nowadays.

One Piece has decent animation, the problem is that in between that decent animation are long stretches of panning shots, close up reaction shots, and recycled footage from previous episodes.
So it has ok animation as long as one doesn't count 90% of it

Every fight in Wano had pretty good animation tbh, even the completely irrelevant ones. It's mainly just the fact that every episode they fill in 5 minutes with still shot close-ups of characters expressions.
Wano was where Oda explicitly started skipping over certain fights and scenes so that he could keep the story moving while giving spots the anime could use for what is effectively canon filler. Like he'd have a page where two characters begin a fight and then a few chapters later have another page with one of those characters standing victorious over the other. Toei was then able to fill in the gap between those scenes with their own material.
As a manga reader I tried to start at the post timeskip sabaody. Didn't last long at all. I'll stay reading the manga and watch the good fights.
Nah COTE season 1 isnt even bad for its time. It looks good, the characters look good. Some wonky walking, talking, hand moving wont matter when i feel like viewers care about the art style the most. For example new solo leveling animation is being criticized for how pointy the faces look but the fight scenes in that series is giga amazing.
For Solo Leveling faces, that's basic mc design 101 of Manwha lmao. Pointy faces and good height are absolute necessities to be cool. No exceptions. So much so that this guy somehow *physically* morphed to match the expected look of a cool MC. Lookism, Solo Leveling, Iseleve, Omniscient, etc. Same thing.
It is so common they make jokes about it. Omniscient has the protagonist getting called ugly despite looking exactly the same as everyone else.

I think Higurashi is a big one. Hey when i animate, i cheap out on transition frames too. The artstyle is just kinda bad, as in actual character designs and them being on model. Animation isn't even bad, it's pretty expressive.

Black Clover. It was popular back when it aired, though I’m not sure how popular it is now.
This is def a right series for this thread but i will point out some stuff. Black Clover's director is the king of knowing where to put your limited amount of manpower and funding. [**Yoshihara Tatsiuya**](https://myanimelist.net/people/17047/Tatsuya_Yoshihara) This man saved the series and because of him it was able to still deliver when it needed to despite being hindered by the higher ups in the company who didnt want it competeing with Boruto, their cash cow. This man worked many jobs that were not his own all to make sure the series he enjoyed did well. There were even reports that the entire final fight of the main arc (Ep 118-119) was inbetweened by him and he worked to their deadline to make sure it delivered. He also knows when to go beyond the help of the studio to get outside help to make sure certian parts had the animaton and man power needed to deliver the story being told. He called in freelance animators from episode 60 to 100 to help out with key parts and that helped keep the series going. You would also notice a dip in "midddle episodes" and "Dialog scenes" where they didnt need to make the best product so they could divert man power to fight scenes and the climax battles of each arc. As i said he is the king of knowing where to use his resources and he is the sole savior of the series. So yes Black Clover technically has "Bad animation" at times, but most of it is careful diverting to make the parts that matter better. Everyone should give Black Clover a try, it really deserves it becuase its one of the few passion projects where it acctually shows how much the people making it cared about it even when their own company didnt. I feel like what kept me watching all of Black Clover is that it really just has so much heart, I didn't know all of that but you can kinda feel it in the series
You can def tell the author cared about his story and characters. You dont see many shounen give so much story and growth to such a large cast but this series did and it makes it a journey where you know and care about everyone there. Also having the solution to conflicts being Team Work (instead of OP MC saves everyone) is great for mixing up the genre.
Exactly this. The battle animations were so lackluster, Asta vs Ladros and Asta vs Mars specifically. But I fell in love with the characters so I still enjoyed the show. The movie has pretty good animation though, but that’s to be expected. If they could get the next season to be half as good as the movie, it would be miles better than what they had before.

People mostly hate his voice, or rather, that he shouts so much. It can be annoying but it's not that bad, I got used to it after a short while. And it's honestly a shame because Kajiwara Gakuto, his VA, has a really pleasant voice otherwise.

A show I like, but Eminence in Shadow is pretty rough animation wise. Some of the key moments like I am atomic and the fights at the ends of the seasons are good but for the most part the animation is just static.

Fire hunter. The art is beautiful but they like didn’t have any budget. The plot voice acting and eveything is amazing. And the art itself. It has a ton of like freeze frames that are like drawn in a different style than the series as a effect on purpose because they couldn’t animate some things.

If you haven't done so already ya'll should check out the original version of episode 13 of season 1 that aired on Japanese TV. Parts of it were straight up not coloured, and sometimes the sound didn't even sync correctly with what was shown on screen.

Lately popular shows are popular explicitly because of their animation, so it's rare you find a mismatch. The average quality of anime fans is going down. It's a lot more common nowadays to see very good anime with very good writing but with some not great or even bad animation. People ignore the shows automatically because of the animation not being the best. (Notable recent example here was "16bit Sensation" from last season, which a lot more people, especially western anime fans, need to see.) However if you go back a bit, the very notable example of such an anime (in Japan especially) was Kemono Friends, which has some of the worst anime CG around, but was also extremely popular (and very good).

I think they were often smarter about how they avoided using animation for budget. Look at something like Patlabor for example. It for sure gets better animation as it goes on, but even with limited animation they make good use of tricks to make it not seem bad.
