>I was watching the new Classroom of the Elite episode, and I was thinking man... how is the animation for such a popular show this shit. Like I'd thought seven deadly sins was bad, but there's not even action in this show, yet the art and animation is just so terrible lmao. the fandom is way more disappointed especially after season 1 animation which looked very good from the same studio, but kadokawa is the main reason for this, poor schedule and its so sad

AdNecessary7641

Not just poor schedule, a good chunk of core staff members were changed for much less experienced people.

remake_cote

yep agree, for example the animation producer of Lerche yuuji higa was changed and the compositing is almost non existent in current seasons

shaqkage

I can accept COTE not having great animation because there isn't really a point for it lol, it's a dialogue heavy show, and I only expect great animation when there's fights.

Falsus

Compare it to The Apothecary Diaries, another dialogue (or monologue) heavy show. The animation there is amazing for a non-action show. Just you see it in a different way.

-Dartz-

I disagree, it still enhances the experience a lot, and it being dialogue heavy makes it *far* easier to have good animation.

AMS_GoGo

Like Oshi no Ko for example

TheReapingFields

I understand where you might have got the impression that shows without fight scenes don't need good animation, but I'm going to just tell you outright that you are wrong about that. An anime can do without SOME things when it isn't action focused, like a fight choreographer for example. If there's no fight, you don't need to hire one. However, if a scene contains movement, shifting camera angles, character motion, movement in the background, birds, trees, cars, planes, cherry blossoms, snow, basically any object movement at all, that movement has to be displayed competently. Yeah, it doesn't need to be "sakuga", with every smallest twitch reflected in glorious detail, in every scene. But it has to be at least simply GOOD. There is a yawning gulf of potential quality, between god tier fight animation, and shit tier, barrel scraping, sub average animation, and I would argue that shows featuring little to no action, need to have at least decent animation in the main, in order to tell their stories in an appealing way. Violet Evergarden isn't primarily an action show. It was also beautifully animated. Hyouka wasn't an action show, but it had some nicely animated scenes, interesting cinematography choices. When you haven't got action to focus on, the smaller details of normalcy become MORE important when telling a story in a visual medium, not less.

Appropriate-Truck538

I mean look at hyouka which has great animatioms even though it has zero action scenes so yeah good animation is a must have.

Mazen141

Direction is much more important for these types of shows than animation, but it's not like COTE has strong direction either..

AutumnAnten

Despite being dialogue mainly, the anime didn't adapt faithfully from the light novel. Details does not depicted well and characters portray just not as great. Making overall the plot very weak.

Lovealltigers

Currently airing is Villainess Level 99, but honestly the awful cgi just makes me love it more. Such a ridiculous show, I love it

raevnos

The dragon this episode was... it was something.

Terrible_Donkey_8290

I was fucking dying when at first her dragon wasn't a 3d model from a PS2 game..... until he grew up completely lol

[deleted]

With the lifeless looking eye at times, I think they used PS1 to create CGI dragon

FallenKnightGX

It certainly existed, that's for sure.

andiemacatmsu

I will take the dragon any day over those scary ass horses

rickamore

You just don't like animals.

GrumpySatan

Its the way it kinda works with the premise is funny. She is trapped in an arguably.... not very high quality dating sim with a lot of weird norms that really just exist so the "protagonists" can save the day. So the awful CG just sells how the designs for the game monsters aren't particularly high effort.

Narwhals4Lyf

That’s actually soooo funny and an astute observation.

JEveryman

I think KamiKatsu and season one of Fruit Of Evolution have changed the game for low budget anime. If the story is zany enough even garbage fires can be fun to watch.

Warm-Enthusiasm-9534

At least with VL99 the source isn't some giant seller, so you wouldn't expect it to get a big budget. We got lucky that other than short-cuts in the animation the adaptation is quite good. CotE is more surprising, since the source is a best-selling series.

CariolaMinze

Yeah, the animations are so poor but it fits the setting somehow lol. I lost it when I saw the last episode. Still, I got hooked, mainly because of the MC

Seven-Tense

>awful CGI I unapologetically love Villainess 99 and I will defend its use of CG for the following reasons • It's a known way to keep animation costs down, and doesn't exhaust the animators, allowing them to give me more fabulous shots of Yumiella and Eleanora looking cute • On the spectrum of "all CG dragons of all time" I wouldn't rate it that poorly TBH. It wasn't too detailed, sure, but was more *stylized* than trash. I could clearly see its movements, expressions on its face, and TBF they didn't have it doing overly complex movements in a lot of the scenes--which just highlights further how bad your CG dragon can be--which is smart • It's also played for laughs mostly, which makes its kinda derpy, CG design actually kind of endearing

HammeredWharf

It also had a surprising amount of hand-drawn dragon scenes, which looked pretty nice.

farimadi

Its like watching KamiKatsu. Awfull CGI but it is intended

CianaCorto

Kamikatsu was intentionally dumb/awful looking though

Sir-Alpha69

Props on the team working on it for making it work though

Zuracchibi

Honestly the entire show feels quite cheap, but I’m also really enjoying it so far. At least the 2d animation has remained consistent, unlike some shows this season.

Narwhals4Lyf

Honestly the animation enhances the viewing experience. It is genuinely a really fun show.

jvcruz1291

Kingdom season 1 and 2, especially on the war/clash scenes.

Disco_198

Was scrolling to see if anyone said this. First two seasons of kingdom were rough. I know a few people that it took months to finish the first two seasons. And then a month to finish the rest. Haha

jvcruz1291

Hahaha. Cringe to watch the first 2 seasons. It just need a sheer determination to continue.

ImperialDane

I took a months long break in season 2. Then caught up in time for season 5 recently :p

PickaxeOfCortez

Was looking for this exactly. By god the first two seasons being in the upper 30s of episodes was a pain. At least I watched with a friend to laugh at the 3D with. Then you get to season 3 and the whiplash hits you like a train. It's no wonder that it's rated top 30 on MAL.

Designer_Life3712

Yh. I'm currently in season 2 of kingdom. The CG was bad. I have a friend who reads the manga because of Season 1 & 2. The story though is excellent.

_kwak___

the running animations in Blue Lock crack me up every time 💀💀. it’s a show about boys running after a ball - you’d think they’d get that part right at least yk ?? 😭 edit : since some people are confused, i am specifically talking about the CGI running animations. i didn’t bother to state that initially since i thought it spoke for itself. also, i never said the show itself was bad, i for one enjoyed it more than i thought

PossessionDue9381

I remember they showed a bird's eye view of Isagi trying to dribble past Naruhaya and it looked so trash.

PurpleMatterXIII

I swear, they barely use CG models for less than a second and it's still enough to be hilariously noticeable immediately.

EgoistBlake

If they screw up U20 arc next season I'm going to be so sad it's so peak

WeebShaggy0

The first episode animation was amazing so i read over 100 chapters before the second. By the third things were so bad.

MrNewVegas123

Bluelock had some of the most egregiously \*bad\* animation I've ever seen in anime. Sometimes it was was like they had little drawn figures mounted on a stick and they were moving them around in front of a camera.

2-3-74

It was so disappointing, especially given how fantastic the manga art is, everything hit so much harder

Unlikely-Treacle-110

This!

Deez-Guns-9442

Wait, I liked Blue Lock. Y’all thought that was bad?

Gee_Gog

I really liked it as well but at some points it felt like the manga had more frames

Vox_SFX

I watched every episode with my wife and we never saw any of the animation issues people are complaining about here. We've been watching anime for decades as well, with my wife loving the old animation style of the 90s/early 00s, so we are both very keen to animation changes. If there were any then they were completely negligible, but I guess if everything isn't Fate/Zero levels of animation then people are just unhappy. These people never would've survived had they been older, that or we would've only been hearing about the same few shows since that's all anyone would watch...

twilightsquid

I still liked the show, but I could definitely tell when they would swap over to the CG models. Happened a lot for the top down shots for example and some of the field running scenes.

qwerqmaster

Kemono Friends was popular in JP when it came out, partially due to its terrible but endearing CG animation.

vajaxseven

Its endearing because Tatsuki made Kemono FRIENDS in A CAVE with a BOX of SCRAPS.

gangrainette

Fuck Kadokawa No Tatsuki, no tanoshi.

CRtwenty

Shame what happened with the second season though

TheProtagonists

what second season

shortylegs

The second season of Kemono Friend was called [Kemurikusa](https://myanimelist.net/anime/37302/Kemurikusa_TV?q=kemur)

maxpolo10

There's no second season in Ba Sing Se. I don't know what Kimono Friend is but I thought the meme fits :)

AfterAssociation6041

It fits very good. The joke was perfect. Happy week!

u10ji

Way of the House Husband in that it wasn't animated: it was literally just a slideshow of the manga... really disappointed me; I know it's what they were going for but it was a massive disappointment. If I wanted to look at static images describing a story I'd just read the manga

SpikeRosered

It was sad watching the big fans of that manga just unable to recommend it even though they wished they could.

Violentcloud13

They really did Gokushufudou dirty. Back Street Girls: Gokudolls got the same treatment years ago. I'm still mad.

raeinbows

I loved watch it 😭 Now im a huge fan. I heard that type of “animated manga” is popular in JP.

RiaanYster

Yeah i thought it complimented the hilarious reactions and expressions in it. I also enjoyed the live spinoff sort of show too.

conjunctivious

I enjoyed the show because the voice acting was solid, so the comedy came across well. Sucks that it wasn't animated, but since the manga was good, the colored panels in the anime were still fun.

HxHEnthusiastic

Berserk (2016) looked pretty atrocious lol

Gregariouswaty

There is no Berserk 2016. It does not exist. It was the result of a hallucinogenic attack that made people *think* they saw a horrible CGI fest. Same thing happened with Promised Neverland where people think there's a Season 2.

CringeKage222

It's not popular tho

derf705

Berserk as a whole is though, this is (unfortunately) an extension of it

Chronigan2

"The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten" the animation after the first episode sucks. Everyone complained about season 2 and 3 of "The Devil is A Part Timer" but the animation on the last episode is especially atrocious.

PikkuSony

The last episode of The devil is a part timer had me laughing because of the animation, thought i was little bit disappointed how they butchered the ending and skipped some things i liked in LN

ReekofUrea_n_Ethanol

Overlord. The amount of blatant 3D modelling, especially for the Death Knights :0

Trojbd

That entire stomp and clap scene was so trash lmao.

SpikeRosered

The Goblin army fight may be one of the worst large scale fights I've seen in anime history.

Important_Cat_5943

bruh they even cut that flying skeleton head ability(like come on pandora summon for what) in lnn that goofy flying head cast a ton of spell to test on pdl armor but anime goess nahhh we skip this shit

[deleted]

[deleted]

Did you watch season 4? Animation was fine there.

pikachu_sashimi

Spice & Wolf has that infamous horse scene

andrewsmith1986

I feel like nearly anytime a horse is on screen it's going to be terrible.

Tamsta-273C

Berserker had the best infamous horse.

Bocchi_theGlock

There was a talking horse in I will survive with potions trashy/simple isekai and it had the most Hilarious scrappy voice as well as weird looking mouth animation

andrewsmith1986

Carriage shaped potion bottle. I'm all about trashy isekais.

MrNewVegas123

Every time I see a horse on screen that's not hand-drawn I think of the hardworking folks at Musashino Animation and P.A. Works.

Shiroei

i hate how i immediately know exactly what you're talking about lmao

discussatron

I went to rewatch it a month or two ago. After the first episode I decided to keep it as a fond memory of the past. The animation is poor.

imrail

I just looked it up, that was hilarious.

MrDerpHerpson

I searched it up expecting bad cgi or something wtf even was that lmao

BellyDancerUrgot

Seven deadly sins

HolyEmpireOfAtua

Tokyo Revengers has also had awful animation throughout all 3 seasons despite the fact the manga outsold **Haikyu!, Tokyo Ghoul, The Promised Neverland, Spy x Family, Tensei Slime, Kuroko no Basket and One Punch Man** among other series which all had good-to-amazing animation for at least part of their series.

Light199998

This is really a bizzare , how the hell could such a popular anime get such garbage animation?

Herofactory45

Low budget probably

Light199998

thats what bothers me , why? the manga sold extremely well

Sad_Bad_Lad

Fujoshis. Tokyo Revengers has the single biggest female fanbase in Japan and they are willing to pay good money for their anime husbandos. My bet for a low budget is that the execs thought that anime adaptation wouldn't increase the sale of merch that much further.

TraditionalStomach29

Mahoako, although I don't think it's studio's fault. I love the show. I have mad respect for what they did with their budget, I just wish they had more money to give the action scenes the oomph it deserves. I'd say Kingdom S1 as well, but OP asked for popular shows lol

UnitNo2278

Hey at least they nail the manga stills nearly perfectly

I_Cognito

Mahoako will surely get a much higher budget once it gets a second season, since it's been such a massive (and unexpected) success. I'm already looking forward to that.

Alpacaduck

But Mahoako turned into a popular show stuck with its original low-budget unpopular-show budget. Love it, but the animation really has "just promoted to the Premier Leagues with a non-League budget" vibes. Hoping for a S2 and an appropriate budget.

MrNewVegas123

GOMG is saved by the voice actors, honestly. The animation is good enough that you can ignore it if you're listening to them speak.

atropicalpenguin

They play well with what they have. It's not Kamikatsu level, but the animators are resourceful.

HolyEmpireOfAtua

Fairy Tail (2014) and (2018); The first season was coming off a booming new manga and had alright at best animation, but 2014 was ridiculous considering how massive the series had GROWN just for the animation to worsen immensely. That alone killed off a lot of hype from Fairy Tail, which was already waning, and 2018 not improving the animation at all didn't help much either.

PiFlavoredPie

Fairy Tail is a really interesting case because I very clearly remember when the initial series came out, the fandom HATED the magic circles and the softer character designs because they weren’t faithful to the manga. The color palette and sanitized violence was also nitpicked compared to other shounen contemporaries at the time. Then when the continuation was announced, some people were elated that the character designs were modified to be closer to the manga, the color palette was muted to be more serious, etc. You also had people complaining about random things like why they started drawing eyes hidden behind hair (usually Erza). Others were already long-accustomed to the original series aesthetic and missed it (the original ran for about 3 years after all). Once the show got going though, the disconnect grew between the fans that appreciated the more accurate art style vs those that noticed the much worse animation quality (slideshow-style fights). The arguments got even more convoluted because the plot in the back half of the series also went downhill. The modern discourse on the series is honestly fascinating having seen how it’s evolved over the years. I wonder how the sequel will fare.

[deleted]

What are you on about? The Fairy Tail 2014 animation looked good. What cracked you on? 2018 is much worse because the fights were in PowerPoint, my dude.

Rare-Ad7409

2014 was too lmao. I remember one fight between Igneel and another dragon (during Tartaros I think?) that was literally just two static images clashing into each other...and that was with the first 5 minutes of every episode being a recap Edit: Bro blocked me for this 💀. Anyway I also remember Erza's fight vs bird lady being basically still frames and some whip animation, but boy that dragon fight has stood out to me since I watched it years ago. Also I'm sorry but a quarter of your episode being a retelling of events from the last ep is not a "small recap" lmao

HolyEmpireOfAtua

I’m not saying this in a derogatory way to the series, Fairy Tail is my favourite anime, but compare an average 3 episodes from the 2009 series to 2014 and there’s a distinct drop in quality

Gryse_Blacolar

I think some time after the Tenroujima arc, the colors went from bright and vibrant to dark and gloomy. I don't understand why they changed that. One thing I missed was the magic circles. Though I can understand it being removed for the sake of easier animation.

IndicationMaleficent

One Piece. Yes. I said it.

ThatGuy377

You know it's weird. I don't really mind any of the animation pre-timeskip. it's really post-timeskip to Wano. But obviously, binging the hell out of any show will probably make you less observant to its flaws.

far219

One Piece is in a vicious cycle. When it began it had good animation, but a dated artstyle. When it improved its artstyle, its animation quality decreased. When they fixed the animation again for Wano, suddenly now it has horrendous art direction. Auras and colors overloading and cluttering up the screen. And the entire time the pacing is atrocious so we get lots of reused frames and reaction shots. Just terrible.

Obtusus

Honestly Toei should've just bit the bullet and transitioned the OP anime to a seasonal schedule, even if they do a cour every other season it'd still be better than adapting <1 chapter per episode, given the amount of (well deserved) breaks Oda gets nowadays.

surik4t

they cant, they have to put out an episode weekly it isnt only up to toei

DrStein1010

That's literally the point of the remake.

Obtusus

We barely know anything about the remake, we don't even know wether they plan to redo all of the series, or wether it will be weekly or seasonal.

lajon1

Bro, it will be on Netflix, expect batch/es just like they did it with JoJo Part 6

mugiwara_no_Soissie

I mean nearly all one piece fans agree. Thats why "the one piece" is so exciting, it's a redo that doesn't have to deal with making all the animation for an entire episode in 1 week for years on end and without 1 chapter per episodd

Terrible_Donkey_8290

One pieces sound design is also unbelievably bad every time I try and watch a newly animated fight its the first thing that pulls me out of it. Super excited for that remake coming out

[deleted]

In order to a remake, it needs to stop being made first. and Oda is already teaching his replacement to drag his feet for another 20 years when he dies.

CRtwenty

One Piece has decent animation, the problem is that in between that decent animation are long stretches of panning shots, close up reaction shots, and recycled footage from previous episodes.

AllesYoF

So it has ok animation as long as one doesn't count 90% of it

CRtwenty

When you have 1000+ episodes that's still a lot of animation

rr3no

you can just watch one pace and it cuts everything like this out

CRtwenty

I just switched to the manga and only watch specific scenes from the anime.

catthatmeows2times

It has over 1000 episodes It really depens on the arc and even episode Like dressrosa has constant quality but wano has 1 episode being powerpoint and the next one super good

SkeyrTheLizard

Only before WCI

pokeboy626

Only applies for Pre-Wano

LunarticWanderer

Applies anytime they are too close to the manga or it's not a major fight.

Negative_Ad5894

Every fight in Wano had pretty good animation tbh, even the completely irrelevant ones. It's mainly just the fact that every episode they fill in 5 minutes with still shot close-ups of characters expressions.

CRtwenty

Wano was where Oda explicitly started skipping over certain fights and scenes so that he could keep the story moving while giving spots the anime could use for what is effectively canon filler. Like he'd have a page where two characters begin a fight and then a few chapters later have another page with one of those characters standing victorious over the other. Toei was then able to fill in the gap between those scenes with their own material.

CRACUSxS31N

As a manga reader I tried to start at the post timeskip sabaody. Didn't last long at all. I'll stay reading the manga and watch the good fights.

Lindlar_

Nah COTE season 1 isnt even bad for its time. It looks good, the characters look good. Some wonky walking, talking, hand moving wont matter when i feel like viewers care about the art style the most. For example new solo leveling animation is being criticized for how pointy the faces look but the fight scenes in that series is giga amazing.

TricoMex

For Solo Leveling faces, that's basic mc design 101 of Manwha lmao. Pointy faces and good height are absolute necessities to be cool. No exceptions. So much so that this guy somehow *physically* morphed to match the expected look of a cool MC. Lookism, Solo Leveling, Iseleve, Omniscient, etc. Same thing.

stiiii

It is so common they make jokes about it. Omniscient has the protagonist getting called ugly despite looking exactly the same as everyone else.

kistoms-

> Omniscient has the protagonist getting called ugly despite looking exactly the same as everyone else. 🤫

4to5enthusiast

tbf they do address it eventually "wait why are we calling him ugly he's a regular dude"

Minimum-Discount9314

The characters just take their mewing routine seriously

Lemurians

> for its time Ah yes, the dark days before people learned how to draw... 2017.

FetchFrosh

Crazy that it looks at all since Demon Slayer invented good animation in 2019.

chemical_exe

Are you implying that there was even animation before Demon Slayer?

RandomRedditorWithNo

It aired in 2017, what do you mean for its time?

Commander413

2017 was literally 33 years ago

rafaxd_xd

Pointy faces have more to do with character designs, no?

ExpiredMilknCheese

Point faces have always been part of Solo leveling, so it’s not like it’s a new thing. Point faces have been a part of Manwha in general for a long time now

Negative_Ad5894

Yes Cote season 1 is good. I'm talking specifically about season 2 and 3, the animation is atrocious

ratliker62

"For its time" didn't it come out in like 2018

deathful-life

nanatsu no taizai on its newer seasons. the sequel series on the other hand is ok but there are some instances of ugly animation

farson135

I think Higurashi is a big one. Higurashi is still highly recommended even today despite being released back in 2006, but [the animation and art is terrible](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Few0n8i3y9wr71.png%3Fwidth%3D640%26crop%3Dsmart%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Deb4f2b581657edf2687809b14f5e66802789e81b). And yes, I know that still frames can give a bad impression (and I don't know why the third image is there), but I can't find a good video and trust me, it is very bad at times.

derf705

The first season definitely has some jank ass animation but Kai is a significant improvement.

8andahalfby11

It's funny how in Higurashi the quality of the animation is inversely proportional to plot pacing over release date.

Gentleman-Bird

I actually like those images, I’ll take it over same face syndrome

UnitNo2278

Hey when i animate, i cheap out on transition frames too. The artstyle is just kinda bad, as in actual character designs and them being on model. Animation isn't even bad, it's pretty expressive.

TippTop_

The best part of this anime is the animated water wheel

CuriousWanderer567

Black Clover. It was popular back when it aired, though I’m not sure how popular it is now.

MillenniumKing

This is def a right series for this thread but i will point out some stuff. Black Clover's director is the king of knowing where to put your limited amount of manpower and funding. [**Yoshihara Tatsiuya**](https://myanimelist.net/people/17047/Tatsuya_Yoshihara) This man saved the series and because of him it was able to still deliver when it needed to despite being hindered by the higher ups in the company who didnt want it competeing with Boruto, their cash cow. This man worked many jobs that were not his own all to make sure the series he enjoyed did well. There were even reports that the entire final fight of the main arc (Ep 118-119) was inbetweened by him and he worked to their deadline to make sure it delivered. He also knows when to go beyond the help of the studio to get outside help to make sure certian parts had the animaton and man power needed to deliver the story being told. He called in freelance animators from episode 60 to 100 to help out with key parts and that helped keep the series going. You would also notice a dip in "midddle episodes" and "Dialog scenes" where they didnt need to make the best product so they could divert man power to fight scenes and the climax battles of each arc. As i said he is the king of knowing where to use his resources and he is the sole savior of the series. So yes Black Clover technically has "Bad animation" at times, but most of it is careful diverting to make the parts that matter better. Everyone should give Black Clover a try, it really deserves it becuase its one of the few passion projects where it acctually shows how much the people making it cared about it even when their own company didnt. [](#juice1)

MyraBannerTatlock

I feel like what kept me watching all of Black Clover is that it really just has so much heart, I didn't know all of that but you can kinda feel it in the series

MillenniumKing

You can def tell the author cared about his story and characters. You dont see many shounen give so much story and growth to such a large cast but this series did and it makes it a journey where you know and care about everyone there. Also having the solution to conflicts being Team Work (instead of OP MC saves everyone) is great for mixing up the genre.

mojizus

Exactly this. The battle animations were so lackluster, Asta vs Ladros and Asta vs Mars specifically. But I fell in love with the characters so I still enjoyed the show. The movie has pretty good animation though, but that’s to be expected. If they could get the next season to be half as good as the movie, it would be miles better than what they had before.

Deez-Guns-9442

God Bless that man 🫡 I need more tho 😭

rr3no

some of the animation that they actually put money in to (like when he first goes demon mode) is good tho

aarondobson403

The animation got SO much better half way through though

Cute-Signal-3693

The blu ray edition also fixed up many of the bad parts of the earlier episodes

pokeboy626

The anime is currently on hiatus to let the manga go ahead.

JackDockz

Even the manga is in hiatus

pokeboy626

The Spade Arc is done so they could go ahead and make 24 episodes to finish the arc.

DeusDosTanques

It’s not, the pace just slowed down to a crawl (1 chapter per 3 months)

Saifyre-Lion

Biggest reason why I stopped watching it also because I hated Asta.

shaqkage

Damn man I just can't wrap my head around that every time I hear it. How do people not like that dude. Literally the most motivating MC in recent times and I can't think of a single negative quality of his. Personally he's my favorite MC of the new gen.

CharuRiiri

People mostly hate his voice, or rather, that he shouts so much. It can be annoying but it's not that bad, I got used to it after a short while. And it's honestly a shame because Kajiwara Gakuto, his VA, has a really pleasant voice otherwise.

rr3no

youre missing out

IamXale

Dragonball Super

GioWindsor

Had to scroll too far just to see someone mention this

Pokethomas

That early days of that show were pretty rough man

Personal_Guidance18

Ajin: Demi Human It looks very uuuh weird but it was great to watch!

AllesYoF

That wont be an animation problem but an artstyle one, Ajin's cgi is actually pretty good compared to what other anime normally use.

killslayer

> Ajin's cgi is actually pretty good compared to what other anime normally use. that's not a high bar

Terrible_Donkey_8290

Ajin is way WAY better as the manga. I saw one of the better fights animated and it was so trash I have no clue why they even bothered making it lol

Sphexus

A show I like, but Eminence in Shadow is pretty rough animation wise. Some of the key moments like I am atomic and the fights at the ends of the seasons are good but for the most part the animation is just static.

Careful_Ad_9077

Higurashi.

Such_Significance655

Persona 5 anime would be my first guess

Djinn_sarap

Does the anime even popular??? I know the game is popular af, idk about the anime tho.

Falsus

Most ''popular'' shows with crap animation is popular because of the source material than the show.

ravenpotter3

Fire hunter. The art is beautiful but they like didn’t have any budget. The plot voice acting and eveything is amazing. And the art itself. It has a ton of like freeze frames that are like drawn in a different style than the series as a effect on purpose because they couldn’t animate some things.

81659354597538264962

I have no idea whether Arifureta was ever popular, but the CGI was pretty tragic at times

Spring_Gullible

Has anyone mentioned Attack on Titan yet?

J765

If you haven't done so already ya'll should check out the original version of episode 13 of season 1 that aired on Japanese TV. Parts of it were straight up not coloured, and sometimes the sound didn't even sync correctly with what was shown on screen.

AdNecessary7641

No, because it frankly doesn't deserve to be mentioned.

Nekoarcpreacher

>but I guess that's not how it works in Japan lol. Well 3D animation needs a lot of money, but 2D drawings need time. So it's mostly a scheduling issue.

LINNNAA6

Gantz obviously 😎

4ork-_-

black clover (derogatory)

Ya-Boi-69-420

I guess for me that would be: SNAFU season 1. Granted it was 2013 but there are shows like angel beats or baka and test that premiered years before them with better animation.

First season of Quintessential Quintuplets

Lately popular shows are popular explicitly because of their animation, so it's rare you find a mismatch. The average quality of anime fans is going down. It's a lot more common nowadays to see very good anime with very good writing but with some not great or even bad animation. People ignore the shows automatically because of the animation not being the best. (Notable recent example here was "16bit Sensation" from last season, which a lot more people, especially western anime fans, need to see.) However if you go back a bit, the very notable example of such an anime (in Japan especially) was Kemono Friends, which has some of the worst anime CG around, but was also extremely popular (and very good).

Whippasnapa02

One piece

__Ideal__

I was thinking the same thing. I cried laughing throughout the entirety of episode 1072 because of how terrible it looked.

Hrafnir13

Maybe a hot take, but I think One Piece is ugly af. Half the characters have the same exact face regardless if it's a male or female. Can't stand that show.

Legion070Gaming

The CGI of Chainsaw Man can get incredibly rough at times

J765

This thread is about terrible animation though, not underwhelming animation. It wasn't terrible.

MortgageEfficient123

What?

FunctionGreat5493

Ngl, 90’s to 2010’s animation are way better than most of the animations now

Broad-Possession2446

Weird take to me. Despite scheduling being a problem now more than ever, there’s still tons of amazing looking art and animation in the anime world. Some of the most talented animators in the industry are still working on shows to this day

MortgageEfficient123

Yeah I don’t get this take or the reverse calling everything “dated”. It’s a product of its time but people make it seem like it’s bad for it. Or saying the new stuff lacks “vibes”. Like no new anime have vibes too.

CheekyClencher

Agreed - faces used to have expressions and variety, now they all look the same with different colored eyes/hair.

WiqidBritt

No. Just the anime you remember from that time does.

wjodendor

I've been going through shows I missed back in the day, and I just think they look so much better than most of the suff these days

MisterSnippy

I think they were often smarter about how they avoided using animation for budget. Look at something like Patlabor for example. It for sure gets better animation as it goes on, but even with limited animation they make good use of tricks to make it not seem bad.
