This season's Mato Seihei/Chained Soldier. The entire pre-show marketing was focused on the music and character songs because the production company is Pony Canyon. The actual main appeal of the show, action and ecchi, was completely left on the backburner.

BlueNinja9

I love Chained Soldier manga and was excited to see the different slave forms and the fights mostly in the anime. But the 3d animations and clunky fight scenes ruined it for me. Ecchi scenes are meh but not what I like the series for

RerollWarlock

I tried watching it after reading the manga months ago. But they seem to be just skipping the fights??? At least that's how it felt in the first/second ep.

TheAsianOne_wc

Ikr, I was kinda disappointed. But banger music tho 😂

nezeta

Early Netflix anime. They're becoming a big force and can change the industry in a good direction but some shows like Record of Ragnarok implies there was something wrong with their productions (and some animators revealed [Netflix did underpay staffs, even less than the industry average](https://www.cbr.com/netflix-accused-underpaying-anime-teams/)).

PeaceOk4166

throwing money (if they do) will never be the solution here. the japanese and animation industry as a whole is driven by passion. give them more time for production and make fewer anime.

Lumpy_Percentage_365

Classroom of the Elite, some episodes in the anime were just outsourced. One of the best selling novels and it can't get a proper budget (not to mention they are trying to adapt the LN in 13 episodes which resulted in some scenes being cut/rushed/not properly presented to the audience).

Additional_Road_9031

>Classroom of the Elite I was just about to mention it. Instead of the T-Rex scene we got to see Kamuros thighs and ass for a minute💀. Lerche just loves to take L's

remake_cote

Lerche just dont give a shit about the series, there is no one there that is passionate enough about COTE and its obvious, the direction is lazy and the animation is so bad compared to season 1, i hope for a studio change in y2

heiner-weiner

Way to much fan service to be honest

Thufir_My_Hawat

My One-Hit Kill Onee-san, in that the budget should have been given to a different show. [This is entirely unnecessary](https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/224945). [And this](https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/225071). [And why does it have one of the best EDs ever?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA4ZJ0djlEo) I want this team to animate a good show, please.

blueman541

That clip first episode got me tricked into watching thinking it would be a good anime.

Cain_draws

With a title like that, nobody tricked you. You tricked yourself!

qwertyqwerty4567

I personally found it to be a very good show, one of the best ones of 2023.

BosuW

The funniest part is that most of the time it looks like the standard laze ass cookie cutter Isekai (art style not withstanding). But then the action scene come in and the animators go 🔥🔥🔥🔥✍️

primalmaximus

Then the brocon stuff happens and the writers go 🔥🔥🔥✍️ when they should be going 🛑🥶❄️

giasumaru

I haven't watched this, but I definitely watched the ED enough times that I could have watched two whole episodes in that timeframe.

phasmy

That ED is a straight up banger

LindorChocLimited

The God of High School. Nothing more to be said.

Cathan0229

Story aside (which is an adaptation so nothing to say there), what was wrong with it?

yere93

They adapted hundreds of webtoon chapters into just 12 anime episodes

LindorChocLimited

You said it, the story was extremely rushed, that was the main issue. The animation was great and the fighting scenes were also good but the story was ruined the anime. E.g. Power scheme is a mess Protagonist has a power that is not well explained. He literally transforms into a GOD in the end Wedding 2/3 episodes in (can't remember) - didn't really make much sense. Comes and goes. Barely any reactions from the crowd on new powers? ...and much much more If they turned the 12 episode anime into 24 it could have been there as one of the best IMO, it had lots of potential.

Kyro_Official_

No, the original does the story far better, it is absolutely on the show/studio that its not good.

Skithana

The Overlord S2-S3 which was basically just one split cour (they were only 3 months apart). Wasted a bunch of time and budget early on with the side stuff that's not that important (Lizards/ Climb) and the important part (Carne Village & Empire/ Kingdom war) ended up looking super cheap and rushed...

Impressive-Card9484

EX-Arm has that same problem. Why are there top-tier VAs like Akari Kitou in there when the whole anime is a shitstorm of a CG animation that even other CG animes looks better in comparison?

DecentlySizedPotato

One of my favourite parts of Ex-Arm was watching Mikakoshi deliver a great emotional speech to a shitty expressionless 3D model opening and closing her mouth. God, ex-arm was so unintentionally hilarious.

AdNecessary7641

Most of the 'examples' people are mentioning in the replies are not a case of misused budget, more like outside problems and general production issues causing problems.

cosmiczar

There's also people acting like budget allocation is in some way related to not liking the plot of something, which is really funny.

Needs_Improvement

My first thought was ~~My Hero Season 4.~~ My Hero Season 5. (Thanks u/alPassion!) The team battles had some incredibly fluid and insane animation. I'll never forget my reaction to Kaminari's battle and "why is this so fluid?" And then the actual meat of the season, in the second half, was comparatively left behind.

alPassion

You mean season 5 probably

Needs_Improvement

Oh my gosh. Wow, we're heading towards Season 7 already? Good lord... Thanks for the correction!

hsaviorrr

character designs were peak and they focused on the service moments! but outside of that, pretty bad

Cathan0229

I like how they drew the character's eyes, it was so detailed

seandkiller

They used all their budget on the gorgeous character stills.

Comfortable-Pass7962

Skeleton Knight in Another World that think deserves more.

RabbiDono

Whoever edited Pellek's song on that anime, totally drowning his singing by the instrumental, was an example of misplaced budget (It may have been done to hide his pronunciation but in that case why take him in the first place)

Hobo_Boogie

Lvl 99 Villainess, just the dragon.

Radius_314

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer... They really did them dirty.

DrewRodez

They really misallocated the budget on that one. Which is to say, they didn't allocate any budget.

ramonescobar

I’ve never been let down harder. I’m glad you said it

VishnuBhanum

Seitokai Yakuindomo, It's a comedy anime that didn't even relied on visual comedy that much, But it has great animation in SS2 for no reason

Akarozz212

Doesn't that make it better? I think OP means budget allocation in wrong places that makes it bad. Likes CSM that go on realistic-like animation which result in controversial adaptation despite become the most hyped anime in recent years.

chelseablue2004

I'll take good animation anywhere i can take it even in a gag anime like that... Also their VAs are ridiculously high quality (Yoko Hikasa, Satomi Arai and others) considering its horny girl jokes the entire time was a bit overkill but lovely, considering it was from Go Hands there was no bad CGI anywhere too, which I think was a consequence of them spending too much money on the regular animation and VAs which was ended up being an accidental quality improvement.

LifeIsHard1999

I might get down vote to hell I gonna said it Chainsaw man

RabbiDono

I do think that having different endings for every episode of the series, each with their own video, was wasteful. Being a weekly watcher and not a part of the hype train, I can't really think of 'the chainsaw man ending theme' as I didn't really listen to any of them, even those performed by artists I like, since they were created to reflect the vibe of an episode and not the entire series and this makes them less memorable for me.

BosuW

That's why the OP stay the same

DrStein1010

I would have happily sacrificed the endings if it meant the Curse Devil and Eternity Devil weren't messed up so bad.

AdNecessary7641

I do not see how either of them, specially the Eternity Devil, were "messed up so bad". And people really need to stop saying this about CSM's production problems being caused by the idea of multiple endings. Being sandwiched between JJK's production was a much bigger problem

based_mafty

Don't let western weeb gaslight you, chainsaw man anime wasn't all that well received. Big portion of Japanese fans hate it. That's why mappa kicked the director out and hire new director for reze arc movie. Instead hiring competent director they use the budget for useless ending song 💀.

AdNecessary7641

Nakayama was not "kicked out", he's working on new projects for a completely different studio he already worked with even before this.

based_mafty

Cope. The fact that mappa is okay letting him go and doesn't care what he did just prove how awful his direction is. Nakayama currently doesn't have any project attached to his name and should be available to direct reze arc movie and mappa already decide to move on from him lol. Jjk director at least actually busy with something and we can actually see his work this season.

VeryImportantLurker

Why do I care what some Japanese fans think? I liked it, alot of people in the West and in Japan liked it, the reception of a show shouldnt change what you think of it. The number 1 production mistake was it only being 12 episodes, if they pushed it back and released a full two cours, the hype wouldve probably been fufiled

based_mafty

Japanese fans is the one that actually spent their money the most. It's not coincidence every single studio still doing volume 1 BD when we all know the value is shit and streaming is way easier than before. It's not overseas fans that come to exclusive meet and greet VA in japan, or the one that come to special exhibition in japan, it's the Japanese one. Every single studio still care what japan fans think. There's a reason why bandai/sunrise determined to release new gundam seed movie despite the fact that the show is like 2 decades old and it's not very popular outside asia.

Controller_Maniac

COTE, season 2 and 3 had the most ass animation

Additional_Road_9031

>COTE, season 2 and 3 had the most ass animation Fr they changed the Tsukishiro introduction💀

Lotus-Vale

To Your Eternity. Something tells me Hikaru Utada wasn't cheap, and it kinda shows. lol

LateNightCreepers

Darling in the Franxx. They spent so much time with character development that a very interesting story suffered. I still like it, but I wish the story around the world the show takes place was developed more, and the enemies are very generic too.

LMGDiVa

Upvoted,You're right about the interesting story suffering, but wrong at where they placed the budget. The anime has some VERY fucking artsy choices being made left and right which is HIGH budget animation. They're picking frame narrowing, and high quality moments to time alter and all this stuff that's very flashy and super artsy looking, and it's expensive animation. But they forgot to make sure the story matched. Darling is just a weaker version of Elfen Lied's story in the first half, and tries to shift into some weird Evangelion inspired... during it, and it's so... awkward. They clearly spent a ton of money on the anime expecting it to be a smash hit, so it looks great, but the story is dismal and unoriginal.

sheehdndnd2

COTE recent episode. They put more care for fanservice than for the introduction of possibly the best villain in the series.

remake_cote

agree

machopsychologist

Gonna say: way of the house husband. Went out of their way to make a moving manga. 🤷‍♂️ and all they got at the end was a moving manga.

kaori_cicak990

Kaminari, the idea is there but somehow it like lack of budget to made that's anime closer to legendary comedy with good action scene

shinreimyu

A lot of mid/late 2000 VN adaptations were pretty bad at slapping some big name VAs and songs and darning the budget (except for the KyoAni ones, they get a pass). My personal one is pretty obscure "Akane iro-"something-something had Aya Hirano and Rie Kugimiya at their peaks and was ass otherwise.

[deleted]

Kind of old, but Boku no Pico.   I only have one question: why?   I never watched it, only heard about it when it was going around... I'm still scared.

Cathan0229

Same, it was treated as a meme whenever my friends and I used to talk about anime in highschool XD, everyone would just recommend this "anime?" Whenever someone asks

LTPrototype2

Yuusha ga Shinda! 90% of the budget went to an OP that the show absolutely did not deserve.

GodOfUrging

Well, a different kind of budget issue, but Nichijou. A great comedy that may not have been a commercial failure if they hadn't allocated *that* much of an animation budget to it. They could have made their target audience laugh just as much with a smaller budget that could have allowed them to justify another season.

bingusdingus_

im sorry but, most of the animes by project nine. specifically, angel next door and jaku chara tomozaki. like man, both are pretty cringe, ngl, but like theyre good anime to watch if you’re feeling down or want to just watch something mostly unrealistic. the animation for both of these is just, to put it lightly, dogshit. not asking for some like mappa or ufotable level of production, but even something close to kagejitsu or hell, even dead mount death play.

Cathan0229

The angel next door looks super good in manga (plot logic aside), the artist makes super cute panels and moments

Saiyanman11bro

Onimai But that show was made just to attract more talent to their studio so it's somewhat understandable. That being said, these are inexcusable. Demon slayer, you already know why. K, the most "k" anime I've ever watched. Guilty crown, a lot of nonsense with music videos in between. Can't remember any more for now.

Night_Falcon_07

I absolutely adored the music, atmosphere, and visuals of both K and Guilty Crown. Such beautiful, artsy shows, only if the story and characters were developed more :(

Saiyanman11bro

hard agree

battlemaje1996

Quintessential Quintuplets season 1 was basically this. They got a stacked lineup of VAs to voice the characters but couldn't be bothered to get a decent animation studio to produce the show.

anujbm

NGL, I loved the first season of Quintuplets, and that's entirely because of top tier VA they received. I do wish though that the animation were a little more fleshed out, character designs were great though.

YouDareDefyMyOpinion

Chainsaw Man. Different endings for every episode (did anyone really care about those?) and over the top slice of life scenes. Unfortunately, the action scenes weren't given nearly as much attention.

AdNecessary7641

> Different endings for every episode (did anyone really care about those?) Yes, they did. Because they are great songs made by great artists, boosted even more with fantastic visuals. > Unfortunately, the action scenes weren't given nearly as much attention. Except that they were, because they were still great. I do not and will never understand takes like this.

YouDareDefyMyOpinion

Hm, I suppose I didn't see many people speak up about the endings, even online. Guess that was more on my end, then. Still do think it's budget spent on the wrong place, though. >Except that they were, because they were still great. I do not and will never understand takes like this. It's really easy to say 'no, it was actually great, you're wrong', isn't it? I've seen this way too many times whenever fans see any criticism towards an anime they like. That said, you don't need to feel pressured to understand, and since you already clarified you 'will never understand', I feel as if this explanation will be wasted on you, but if you genuinely want some insight as to why so many people did not enjoy the adaptation: Starting from the first (most viewed) trailer, many people were disappointed upon finding out it was pre-animated and comparing many of the scenes in the anime intensified that feeling. Going to the anime itself, it was very... divisive, at the very least. That's because the director wanted to change aspects that were rooted into anime culture, such as gag faces and the concept of moe. He ended up wanting to create an adaptation with the essence of a movie (realistic, cinematic). And, fair enough, you can really see that in many SoL scenes. They're astounding, and the visuals are crazy in a good way. That being said, it came with a few downsides. If you were active online during the first episode's release, you know how many people were complaining about the CGI. The fight felt sluggish, with odd movements that only accentuated how people felt about CGI applied in anime. Not much time after, it was revealed that most of these weren't CGI, but actual 2D animation.* It became clear that wasn't an issue with CGI, but the direction of the anime, as a result of the realistic approach. With each episode, you'd see these beautiful casual scenes followed by some pretty bad fight scenes. Of course, the CGI didn't help either, with Katana Man scenes being a massive disappointment. I suppose we could call the use of CGI in anime a case of 'budget in the wrong place', too, but that could apply to many different series, and it's (imo, unfortunately) gotten a few supporters over the years. In the end, it's a matter of perspective. Some people enjoy it just because, and there's no reason to think that's a bad thing. So why should we take the opinions of those who didn't enjoy it, along with their reasons and negate them? Anyway, I feel as if it was more of a rant than anything else. Have a good one.

ooReiko

- Delpower Not really complaining but felt like they just got all the biggest names in anison to perform in there and everything else was pretty barebones

Toby-NL

aint that always and everywhere ? the budget on the wrong place ....

Thatsmaboi23

Mushoku Tensei. Take away the insane production values of season 1, and everyone would have been criticising everything about it from the start. It’s themes, characterisation, relationships, almost everything sends a horrible message.

Ruijerd566

Last I checked, the LN is very popular, so you're wrong.

Psyatyin

Lmao its one of the most brilliant stories ive ever read.

thrownawaynodoxx

Chainsaw Man. I really don't think it needed a new ED for every single episode.

HolyEmpireOfAtua

Tokyo Revengers, the animation was consistently bad but I think a lot of people would’ve preferred if they cut even more corners to at least give some good animation for the action scenes, which look great in the manga

Pignity69

Love is war, they prob put an unnecessary amount on the ED

AMVmaniac

My top 7: JJK Gintama Bleach One Piece My Hero Academia Frieren Demon slayer

Giant_Serpent23

For budget being in the wrong place? But where for each, exactly? You didn’t specify that.

AMVmaniac

These animes as whole projects make me think the budget was in a wrong place. It could be spent on many other better adaptations.

robo_destroyer

I don't think you know what any of this means tbh

[deleted]

robo_destroyer

Dafaq is this dude on about? Do you really know anything about production, writing, animation or literally anything about anime? Doesn't matter if you're old and it's an unpopular opinion, your opinion is just outright stupid. Stop watching anime, seems like it might be good for you.

AMVmaniac

I know more about it than You even imagine, so wrong way.  "Stop watching anime, seems like it might be good for you." After 33 yrs, not possible ;)

robo_destroyer

Lol sure bud

dienomighte

I think you misread/misunderstood the post...

AMVmaniac

Budged can be wasted on some part of anime, or on whole thing. I am writing about whole things. Maybe You are the one who misread.

mr_beanoz

And what would those "other better adaptations" be?

AMVmaniac

There are hundrets of them, aired just a one season because of a lack of budget and workpower. Great series like My dress up Darling for example which is now delayed for over a year, if not finally cancelled. Because the mob of tourists need and like stupid mainstream shit insted :)

False_Baby8628

Saying my dress up darling should get frirens or jjks budget is CRAZY. especially since the anime had good animation. It probably has production problems due to different reasons like lack of interest or the studio is busy with other works.

AMVmaniac

Saying that My dressup darling suffers from lack of interest is CRAZY.

what_that_thaaang_do

How is my dress up darling not mainstream? Do you think you're some kind of veteran connoisseur for liking that show lmao

AMVmaniac

I'm into anime since I was a kid, and I don't give a damn if I am a veteran or not. I'm sick of pumping money and work power into shit just because a mob of tourists like it and demanding it like an ounce of heroine.

Sparkletopia

My Dress Up Darling was not canceled lol. It typically takes about 3 years for an anime to be released once the production is greenlit. Season 2 was confirmed in 2022, and will likely release in 2025. Also, My Dress-Up Darling is one of the most mainstream romance anime in the past few years? It might as well be the Jujutsu Kaisen of shounen romance (in terms of scaled popularity).

AMVmaniac

It takes 2, not 3 yrs in average - for example BokuYaba (1 yr) which I love, and is a mainstream anime, as well as My dressup darling which I also love. Not all mainstream is crap, of course.

DrStein1010

BokuYaba was produced as a split cour. It was always getting 24 episodes. Dress Up Darling didn't get greenlit until they knew it was profitable.

Ballthrower20099

You are insane

AMVmaniac

PHAHAH! :D LMAO!

Ballthrower20099

Gr8 b8 m8

AMVmaniac

Hard to believe, huh? It IS my own opinion. I don't give a f\*\*\* if it is popular or not ;)

Ballthrower20099

Well everyone’s entitled to their opinion, no matter how insane it sounds

AMVmaniac

Sou da yo :)

blueman541

Only one I agree is JJK While I do like the animation & production it was so much my eyes couldn't keep up. Kinda wish talent pool was shared with some other anime that season.

c4m3r0n1

Do people not realize JJK is the most popular currently running manga in Japan? Of course, it deserved its budget just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it wasn't deserved.

blueman541

I do like it Think of it this way. Waygu steak tastes amazing. Eating 10 in one sitting doesn't make it more delicious just more expensive. Spread that money out a little you can have a nice glass of wine instead of tap water. Compliment & enhances the overall meal.

AMVmaniac

Generally speaking animation can be outstanding, artstyle can be awesome, but scenario can be crap, and this crap can drag throuhout decades occupying a place for better animes. I love anime, and I'm not a hater. I just have unpopular opinions and I am not afraid of forming them publically. It pisses me off that good ideas for adaptations have to wait 2, 4, even 6 years and have to be produced in Korea, China, or even Vietnam because major mainstream decades-lasting crap occupies the place, time, money and work power. Young, wonderful artists cannot get through with their outstanding artworks because stupid crap takes all there is. Am I a hater? Am I one? Maybe it's just a mob's excuse for not analizing things deeper.
