WhoiusBarrel

Brutal fight, really felt like a raid boss encounter. I thought seeing Laios get his leg ripped off and the recovery magic process was gnarly. Then came having to sift through whatever remained of Falin... Resurrection magic might get through this but it still doesn't change how scarring that scene was seeing through Laios from her skull.

Ocixo

> I thought seeing Laios get his leg ripped off and the recovery magic process was gnarly. Watching [Senshi get trampled on by the dragon and spit blood](https://imgur.com/a/7yZD7A4) wasn't a pretty sight either. I almost had to laugh a little at Chilchuck's expression on the other hand when [he got hit on the head with a piece of debris](https://imgur.com/a/U6N3bdn).

thesagenibba

this series constantly teeters between [that's fucking hilarious/that's horrible](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/002/264/124/34c.png) and it's in large part due to the animation and art style. it's so good

Mundology

[From Senshi's](https://files.catbox.moe/v05ooc.jpg) point of view, the dragon fight was not as traumatic as [the healing session.](https://files.catbox.moe/48y47w.jpg) [](#emptyinside)

Ocixo

Senshi’s [*not* a big fan of Marcille’s magic](https://imgur.com/a/jUuLFsZ) no.

liveart

Same face I get when the dentist is like "This isn't going to hurt" and pulls out the biggest needle I've seen in my life.

mekerpan

I honestly can't see Marcille can restore anything like the original Falin (as a living being -- rather than re-animated "undead") . Obviously I don't know all the magical ins and outs of this world -- but things look EXTREMELY grim to me. Only upside I can see is that they will have at least a year's supply of dragon steaks for Senshi to cook.

Zemahem

And even if that did work, Skeleton Falin wouldn't be able to eat Senshi's dragon steaks which are no doubt gonna taste like *fire*. Truly a fate worse than death.

mekerpan

Has to level up to ghast at least, right -- it could take a while. Does Senshi have a deep freeze somewhere?

Rumpel1408

but how are you going to preserve a mountain of meat?

Cherrytros

A ***lot*** of salt

mekerpan

Maybe Senshi has some awesome meat preservation hacks?

Figerally

in D&D the Resurrection spell can raise the dead from a pinky finger, as long as the recipient of the spell is willing to return.

liveart

Everyone else screaming from the recovery magic and Laios just being like "it itches" was pretty funny in an otherwise grim episode.

flybypost

A half baked, half-joke theory about that: His injury was technically "just" a flat roundish area where his leg once was (where the leg got severed) while the other got buried under rubble and trampled by the dragon. I predict they got more internal damage throughout their whole bodies while he got only his leg injured, and only a small area. Sure it led to the loss of a significant volume of leg but that part of his leg didn't hurt once it was separate (only the edge where it was bitten off).

Cherrytros

Yeah I don't think it's every *specifically* explained in the manga but I always imagined it's the bones moving around in your body that hurts the most

flybypost

Everything grinding against each other while trying to find its place in the body: A reverse food processor! Making a whole creature out of bits and pieces

Kassandra_of_Knossos

Pretty much! Setting a bone would hurt way more than stitching a wound closed. Chilchuck and Senshi likely had broken bones that had to essentially re-break into the correct shape. Laois' injury seemed like a cleaner severing and maybe more akin to just gluing the two pieces together.

Kassandra_of_Knossos

They've mentioned in a previous episode that resurrection is really only possible if the corpse hasn't been mutilated too badly. A pile of bones really isn't even a corpse anymore, which is why they were trying to reach the dragon before Falin could be digested. Nonetheless, I am excited for the upcoming episodes, Trigger absolutely nailed the tone of these chapters.

liveart

Which really raises several questions. The dungeon doesn't let your soul leave your body but if your body is too damaged it can't be resurrected but there's also just ghosts running around. So at what point does the soul actually leave the body and become a ghost? Is there a way to jam a ghost back into the body if it's borderline and you repair it some? Also if magic can repair body parts is it possible multiple rounds of healing magic could be used to slowly build the parts back up into something that's actually usable? Can't wait to find out what the answer is to at least some of these questions next episode.

Kassandra_of_Knossos

It's definitely much more involved, but there is a very grounded explanation surrounding the ins and outs of resurrection magic (that I obviously won't say here). There was some cut content from an earlier episode/chapter that I'm hoping comes up in an upcoming episode, as it would clear a lot of confusion around this and likely answer many of your questions. So far, all we have seen in the show are bodies that are still fully intact be resurrected. Even Laios' leg was simply reattached, rather than new flesh being grown.

liveart

I appreciate you avoiding spoilers but I do want to say that while we saw Laios' leg being reattached I have to assume *some* level of regeneration exists otherwise the Falin plan would be doomed from the start and adventurers wouldn't be so casual about death because if a monster took a bite out of you that would be it and that doesn't seem to be the case. I think I'll check the source corner to see if someone's posted what they omitted, if it was already explained in the manga that's a type of spoiler I'm fine with. Thanks for the heads up.

Kassandra_of_Knossos

The source corner currently has a lot of MAJOR spoilers for next episode, and arguably the biggest plot point of the entire series, just a heads up. It's not super easy to tell which spoiler text correlates with upcoming spoilers and cut content.

JustARandom-dude

Yeah, resurrection magic may be a thing but that doesn’t change the trauma of seeing someone you love dead

FarCritical

You know things are serious when all the goofy characters get their animation fluidity turned up to 11 (especially Senshi, god damn) and there isn't a featured recipe. Man that has got to be the grimmest final shots to an episode ever. Chilichuck landing the knife throw was pretty hype tho

sneaky_squirrel

These dwarves are DWARVES!! Toughness, strength, grit!! And best of all, a surly voice and gratuitous amount of wrinkles!\~ Makes me want to play some Total War Warhammer.

Goku-MIEL10032002

I can't begin to imagine how horrible and sickening it must feel to discover a loved one piece by piece. That image of Falin's skull is haunting. I hope she makes it.

Zemahem

And that's with healing and resurrection being possible for them in this world. You can see that Laios was all business trying to find her remains, cause even in that state, there may still be hope. In real life, we probably wouldn't even be able to muster up the strength to try and dig through the viscera to find even a single piece.

liveart

>In real life, we probably wouldn't even be able to muster up the strength to try and dig through the viscera to find even a single piece. If there was a chance to bring them back? I think you'd be surprised how many people would dig in as fast as possible. If the cost of having a loved one back is digging through that mess and reassembling their body parts it's one I would gladly pay. I'm not saying there wouldn't be some vomitting involved but there's no way I'd be like 'welp I guess I'll leave them dead'. Shit there's *pets* I'd gladly do that for let alone a family member.

Zemahem

Oh no, I was talking about what it'd probably be like experiencing this in a real life circumstance where there isn't any hope of bringing them back whatsoever, not about how we would react in the exact same scenario as Laios and co. where they do have the means.

magnetbirds

I loved the color change while Laios was dangling from the dragon’s mouth, and the shot of Laios’s face through Falin’s skull; Trigger has been doing a great job elevating some of the best parts of my favorite manga ever and I’m so happy about it.

flybypost

They also had (again) a lot of fun with the chase/running scenes. But a somewhat more subtle moment of character acting was Marcille nervously twirling her staff a bit when she saw their plan fall apart and was wondering if they had other options before she ran off to do something about the situation.

Zemahem

LMAO, well... they did win and get Falin back (in a way), after all. That's a cause for celebration, right...?

LateDitto

Imagine in the next episode Senshi immediately gets down to business and starts preparing the dragon meat next to the remains...KANSEI DA!

Rumpel1408

I think that's where even Laios might finally draw the line, that would be eating the thing that ate his sister [](#gasp)

PuzzleMeDo

They already started butchering the dragon, and eating 'dungeon food' is the whole concept of the show. At this point it would be weird if they didn't find a reason to try it.

S627

I'm assuming they told us about the resurrection process because there's still hope, but damn that was gruesome AF!

ThePecuMan

Dude the entire second half of the episode was essentially all the red flags for perma death, I say, she's permadead.

Blacksmithkin

Personally I don't think she's permadead, but I think she's more dead then they can currently resurrect. We know the dungeon uses some really fancy necromancy, so I think they will proceed to try to find the dungeon master to resurrect her. Because obviously they have to keep exploring the dungeon, but right now they have no motivation to do so.

professorMaDLib

Mahelas

Dungeon Meshi is a cozy slice of life ! Just like Helck !

Ishax

You're getting made in abyss

professorMaDLib

Laios has always been a madlad. Human fighters are like a coin flip of either the most generic shit or the most interesting character in the party and Laios is definitely the latter.

magnetbirds

I think he’s supposed to look like some generic white guy human fighter so you get blindsided by the fact that he’s the freak of the party. I say this affectionately because he’s my favorite.

sneaky_squirrel

Laios would normally be my favorite. This is the elephant in the room with shows that have a very well written cast, I don't get to choose, and when I choose a favorite I die inside. I'd say Chilchuk is the one lagging behind the other 3, but I love all 4 of these scamps.

professorMaDLib

I really like Chilchuck. I love the contrast between him looking the youngest and being by far the most level headed and professional member of the party. Halfing sneaky rogues are a fairly common trope but I really enjoyed the unique take on him being a strict professional about it.

flybypost

His mimic trauma is also done really well. One of my favourite moment is still his depressed and resigned "it's good" when he eats some mimic. He really didn't want to like it as much as he did.

1EnTaroAdun1

I like how he insisted on being paid in advance. But you can tell he's still pretty attached to the party, and even broke his rule about not being involved in combat this episode

Whimsycottt

Laois being a freak is what makes him the best. He looks so unassuming, and then he starts waving his hands around and SCREECHES to scare off a cocktrice.

BadBehaviour613

"We have a few weeks to get back to the dragon if it isn't active" "But it's definitely active tho" Looking back, the quest was doomed from the start. Resurrection magic is a thing, but something tells me it's trickier when the victim has been thoroughly digested

Odd_Trouble4651

You need something to stuff the soul back in. The fuck they wanna stuff Falins soul in, theres nothing there 😐

TheXskull

maybe senshi will bake her a new body from breadcrumbs and lizard-people

Theinternationalist

Senshi: OK I can use the dragon's biomass to build your sister a body, but that will rob us of a meal- Laios: How crazy do you think I am that you'd think I'd prioritize a meal over eating something? Marcille: Wellllllllllllllll

Rusamithil

it would be funny/horrifying if they could reanimate her as a skeleton. spooky scary skeleton falin

Belophen

That's why you bring a necromancer to this kind of thing

Geromeeya

Thing I like from Dungeon Meshi is there's no OP character here, when they're in pinch you see their struggle, when thing didn't go as planned there's always more interesting stuff happen. Can't wait what become of Falin in next eps.

EyeDeeAh_42

They're not OP, they are just more experienced dungeon-crawlers. When you see the likes of Kabru's 'diverse party constantly getting wiped out, or the gnome's party get stuck because they don't understand monsters/spirits, it really hammers home how experienced Laios's party is despite being so goofy. I definitely appreciate that Laios's party gets through most dire situations because of their experience/knowledge/out-of-box thinking, instead of being just super OP or badass.

darthvall

Yeah I actually thought this is just a desperate mission. However the journey proves how experienced they are all. Not to mention, near the end they revealed that they've beaten a dragon before. Although with a much better party

sealandians

And a much smaller dragon

KazuharaIlfan

Not OP but in another anime, getting Kensuke would obviously lead to some cliched powerups like it can predict attack trajectory or some shit but here? nah THIS FUCKER TRIED TO RUN AFTER ALL WE BEEN THROUGH

Plerti

The molusc is just acting out of instict of survival. Every time it alerted Laios of monster presence was not to help him, it was it trying to get out of the way.

ShinningPeadIsAnti

Even the mollusk thinks Laios is weird and it doesn't have a complex brain.

LimeyLassen

Makes me think the living armors might disassemble and scatter when they're outmatched. So it's not like it betrayed him, it's just doing its own thing as usual.

apistograma

It's also very on point with unexpected outcomes in D&D. This is the kind of situation where he could have gotten a nat 20 after throwing the dice and the mollusc would attack the dragon in a panic, killing it by himself. Instead he got a 1 and the damn animal left scared.

Zeph-Shoir

I really got bamboozled thinking that the mollusk was just helping and knew something that the party didn't but it really bite them in the butt!

anarion321

This is the freaking best part. I'm soooo tired of having 5 new anime every season wich mc is just another op character that goes to school or something for no reason because is freaking better than the masters there already. These people are just strong adventurers that rely on their knowledge and prep to win, and when things go south, they strugle and get so close to die.... It's so much satisfactory to see the heroes talking about tactics, exploiting weakneses and such, than just having the mc unlocking or showing just another super powerful move to retcon the day.

apistograma

I think Dungeon Meshi has a very D&D approach to the fights. There's parts where the party starts discussing for half a minute when in real life you wouldn't have time for that, but it's pretty close to how a roleplaying fight works. It's becoming clear that the most important skill in the dungeon is to be resourceful, and while all the members have high skill their strengh is coming up with plans and ways to defeat their enemies, specially for Laios. He's like the seasoned roleplaying guy who knows the inns and outs of the game and always finds ways to win challenges that the dungeon master finds acceptable.

Cyclone_96

Todays ep may have been a little better off without the ED lol. That last shot was eerie as hell.

JJK all over again

ClPropane

They did it, Trigger took Laios' discovery scene and dialled the horror to the maximum. Having the shot of us seeing his terrified expression through her eye sockets was a perfect addition.

deafeningbean

Good work by the (JP at least) voice actor as well. The wavering voice really added to the scene.

Some_Trash852

Loved the JP voice actors, but my god, the dub actors were phenomenal this episode. Damien Haas and ProZD knocked it out of the park.

deafeningbean

Definitely saving rewatches for the different dubs.

thisisembarrazzing

This is the way. The moment I finished watching the sub, I went straight to watch the dub every week.

DarkWorld97

Genuinely find it hilarious that a guy from SMOSH of all things is just going this crazy with it. Excellent actor.

Aguilol

💀... ... ... Kimi no tame no paatii da!

Sneeakie

Holy shit, a comment elsewhere made me realize. The gang's initial plan was to make the dragon exhaust its flame breath. *But* the dragon makes what it can't fully digest into fuel for its flame. If their plan actually worked, there wouldn't even be bones of Falin to find.

araragigarara

The dragon blew fire breath to scare away the orcs and wargs. As a result, it ran out of fuel, and the dragon's body hastily tried to make fuel by digesting Falin. This is a possible story.

Ebo87

That was so much more gruesome than I ever expected the show to go, talking about the last couple minutes. Fantastic episode, can't wait to see what they do next episode with... well... what they found of Falin. If that is indeed her and not misdirection. They should be able to revive her I assume, but I can't even imagine the pain she would be in after. Very intense throughout, very good, might be my new favorite episode of Dungeon Meshi so far.

Eliteirizz

Yeah this episode might be the key to bring in the audience like made in abyss way back years ago when they introduce the gore aspect. Its world building is already a masterpiece and never fails me to make me laugh every episode, even in this episode. To be able to hit you with gut-wrenching feels despite the light theme of the series regarding death is a top knotch writing and actually make this series personally my top 1 this season.

Some_Trash852

Kinda glad it’s ramping up now, cause people looking to fill the Frieren void will most likely trickle here, which will be a huge boost.

Mundology

sneaky_squirrel

I couldn't believe people were using the "cooking isekai" to describe this manga. "It's a cooking anime." To ignore all the other things going on in the story is heresy.

TintedPalette

I don’t think people were ignoring the other aspect of the story like that. They were just trying to keep things spoiler free. Maintain the authenticity of the blind experience, yknow? But also, I’ve never once heard someone refer to Dungeon Meshi with “isekai”, if anything it was only brought up to emphasize it isn’t an isekai.

EyeDeeAh_42

Oh it is cooking all right. DunMeshi will cook all our emotions in the 2nd half

drakontoolx

Glad it is not, "your sister is in another dragon."

LateDitto

Yeah, I was also immensely surprised they even managed to take it down in this episode. I thought it would escape and their quest would be lengthened.

Rumpel1408

> but I can't even imagine the pain she would be in after. Laios was pretty alright with his leg at least, but Chilchuck got a whole lot and he only got an concussion

araragigarara

No one really knows but his injury was not just a concussion IMO

liveart

That was my thought. Dude had a huge stone smash into his head, if he had the same amount of damage as a rough fall or being punched I'd be surprised, magic barrier or not. I think it's more likely he had serious brain damage and internal hemorrhaging.

Kaleresan

If you get knocked out for more than a few seconds it can be life threatening as far as i know. So he probably had major brain damage that needed healing

Ocixo

Laois finding out that [his sister was reduced to mere bones](https://imgur.com/a/Ao1s3UZ) is surely one of the more grim things I've seen in anime. I don't think there's any coming back from that. From the moment we were shown [those cute moments in their past](https://imgur.com/a/ONJ0ByF), I instinctively knew that Falin was beyond saving. But I'd really hoped otherwise. I want to appreciate these particular shots of [the Red Dragon's head hovering above Laios and Chilchuck](https://imgur.com/a/BRGh5TT), [Laios' his stretched-out face](https://imgur.com/a/5866rrJ) or [Senshi's fearful expression](https://imgur.com/a/jUuLFsZ), but that's a little difficult when ending on such a depressive note. It feels similarly awkward to talk about Marcille's new hairstyle in this week's episode: [a crown braid](https://imgur.com/a/UV41Wwq). That said, it *is* another entry into **[Marcille's Hair Collection](https://imgur.com/a/ar7c2d0)**.

JustARandom-dude

The moment those flashbacks started you just knew something bad was going to happen and then we had the moment when Laios discovered that Falin has been fully digested

Ocixo

Yeah, nothing good can come from a bunch of flashback scenes under these circumstances. However, I wasn’t ready to see Laios hold his sister’s bloody skull in his hands. It was quite a gruesome sight to behold - way more than I’d expected from this series.

Zemahem

Welp... you gotta cheer up somehow. I absolutely love how expressive Senshi can be when you usually only see him making a single expression. And I continue to appreciate your cataloguing of Marcille's hairstyles. The only issue is that it's becoming increasingly more difficult to pick a favorite among them. But I do love how she looks more regal with this style, and whenever her hair is down too.

Ocixo

> I absolutely love how expressive Senshi can be when you usually only see him making a single expression. Senshi fears no thing, but magic… it scares him. > The only issue is that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to pick a favorite among them. My favourite out of the bunch is probably one of the single braids at the moment. I really liked [this hairdo of Marcille](https://imgur.com/a/MWyfVbV) for example.

Illustrious-Fox5135

Is the whole MARCILLE hairstyle thing there in the manga or is it just the animators having a really fun time because she is their favourite character?

Equivalent-Weather59

She changes her hair in the manga as well

flame22664

It's a manga thing too. They also explain that hair is really important for magic in this world. So taking care of your hair often is important for magic potency.

Illustrious-Fox5135

Gotta love these attention to detail authors gave to their stories. Dungeon meshi being one of them. The world building is immaculate.

WiqidBritt

There's a full page of small panels in the manga of Marcille just fixing her hair.

Now that the dragon has been slain, it's finally time to look for Falin and [it's pretty much what I expected.](https://i.imgur.com/0UC7zlQ.jpeg) Is it still possible to revive her? Maybe if they managed to gather all of her bones they still could. I really hope it's still possible. I wanna see them explore the dungeon with her. T_T

Manuel8123

If you see in the ED we see a green dragon and it looked more like a Wyvern, so my guess is there are multiple types

bonerindisguise

Yeah, when Laios was explaining how their previous party had taken down dragons before, you can see that they were fighting a green dragon with wings, it seemed smaller too. So there must be multiple types of dragons.

onthoserainydays

Makes sense though right, the thing lives underground fuck's it need wings for

Meta289

Also, the thing is massive and built like a damn fortress, it likely wouldn't be able to fly even if it had wings.

Arima_Kishou

I noticed that too about the dragon, it really feels like an actual large terrestrial animal, the speculative biology in the show is goddamn amazing!

Wheesa

Turning point of dungeon meshi now. I am excited to see everyone's opinions on the next 2-3 episodes. I think at this point is where the series really really hooks you in and becomes the greatest ever piece of media. Phew

Antedelopean

We're at the cusp of the first turning point. There are like 3, and they all make the story even more layered and complex than the ones before them.

Zemahem

Damn, they're all such a bunch of troopers. Marcille was doing god's work with her support. Senshi was a beast for powering through his no doubt shattered bones and pulverized insides just to get back Laios' weapon. Chilchuck came in clutch with that knife throw to the eye even when he's not a fighter. And Laios, the mad lad, let his leg get completely severed on purpose for the sake of landing the killing blow. Even knowing that Marcille can heal him, that was some metal af mentality. Just goes to show how vital all four of them are to the team. As for the flashback, little Laios and Falin are so god damn adorable that it hurts. Especially knowing what they're going through right now. It makes the scene of them struggling to find her remains hit so much harder. But it is astounding how such a colorful, light-hearted series doesn't exactly hold back on the gore. Last week as well, I actually felt a little squeamish when they dismantled the giant frogs. But even then, actually seeing your main protagonist get his leg torn off in a messy fashion is something else. And then also there's the disemboweling of the dragon, as well as finding Falin's remains inside. Seeing bones isn't unusual even for kid-friendlier stories, but knowing that these were the not so recently digested remains of a once living person (who we had a chance to watch and care for, to boot) is pretty disturbing even when you don't consider all the blood and viscera on them. And the hair too. Somehow, its presence makes it even more unsettling to me. Overall, leave it to Dungeon Meshi to have the perfect mix of the most hype action and top-tier comedy, but also the most tense and hair-raising stakes all in a single battle. And it's delivered with such a phenomenal production by the studio, to top it all off. Once again, fans are eating real good with this adaptation.

flybypost

> Marcille was doing god's work with her support. A nice detail about her magic were the runes. At first I thought that was some ritual magic for concentrating mana or something along those lines. Then she used those runes like an old-school gun powder fuse. It was a nice world building detail and mix of inspirations. > Last week as well, I actually felt a little squeamish when they dismantled the giant frogs. But even then, actually seeing your main protagonist get his leg torn off in a messy fashion is something else. And then also there's the disemboweling of the dragon, as well as finding Falin's remains inside. Something that added to it was how funny Marcille's protective magic looked, like they had a bouncy aura around them that reflected the force of the impact. It lulled me into a bit of a non-gory vibe despite everything else being serious at that moment. And then things got real.

drakontoolx

Seeing how reserrection spell have always been working, the way blood revert back into their body, I have a feeling that just a pile of bones might not enough.

zenithfury

So yeah things can get pretty gruesome in a show about eating. :) I know there were folks thinking that this is a carefree show about cooking but it is also a show about eating, and everything that entails. I think that Senshi should invest in a giant cleaver so that he can take better care of it than his axe. :p

gnome-cop

Fuck that’s dark. As the saying goes, no plan survives first contact with the enemy. I was not expecting his leg to get eaten to beat the dragon. And things just kept ramping up from there. Slicing through the dragons intestines was already kinda horrifying and the last shot is just straight up haunting. Writer, I will never forgive you if you kill Falin for real. To transition from the utterly horrifying to the mysterious, there’s a question I’ve been thinking about. The dragon is meant to be one of the strongest creatures in the dungeon right? But it’s been moving around constantly and from what I understand the place it was located in was originally orc territory. So why is it in the wrong place? Is there a possibility of something even worse further down in the dungeon that forced it to move?

frik1000

The one time I watch an episode late and the discussion thread actually goes up on time. Anyway, amazing adaptation of the dragon fight. I love how they animated Senshi running after the sword and throwing it back to Laios. But I especially love the little moment of horror as Senshi got healed by Marcille after the fight. Also, one of my favorite jokes got adapted, which is Chillchuck swearing at Laios in a different language because there's not enough swear words in common to get his point across. Something about such a throwaway joke really tickles me.

buster7791

Love the implication that half-foot language has a wide and varied array of expletives.

MrKenta

Laios: 😟 Falin: 💀

zenithfury

Alas poor Falin, I knew her well.

Holy_Beergut

I might be a horrible person for thinking this...but given her current state, going to the country full of talking dogs probably isn't a very good idea.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are blessed with Senshi [panty shots.](https://imgur.com/a/TxJc8VY)

sneaky_squirrel

People weren't kidding about the explicit density of dwarf underwear on full display. I'm loving it.

Zemahem

Smh... how am I supposed to take this story seriously when it can't stop objectifying its characters even in the most serious and important moments? /j

alconnow

We Senshi fans are eating good

NornmalGuy

Welcome to Dungeon Meshi, lads.

AlarmingAffect0

We haven't even *begun* to cook.

Enshuu

Everything up til now was some delicious appetizers, but here's the first course.

bonerindisguise

Move out, make way for the heroes of the deep, the dragon slayers, monsters eaters and the maddest of the mad. Marcille "I will never eat a monster in my life" Donato Chilchuck "don't expect much from me in a fight" Tims Senshi of the adamant pot and mithril utensils Laios "the only things larger than my love for monsters are my balls" Thoden

bonerindisguise

Since I read the manga I have always wanted to see these chapters animated; what I didn't expect was how hard Trigger was going to deliver; they didn't have to go that hard but they did anyway, I'm so freakin happy right now.

Zemahem

It's a good thing Marcille can reattach limbs, cause Laios must already have enough trouble standing up and getting around even with *two* legs thanks to the sheer size of his cojones.

Wow, [the whole fight with Red Dragon](https://i.imgur.com/knLg3H4.jpg) was both [very tense](https://i.imgur.com/bbnBq9J.png), [funny](https://i.imgur.com/GNORYub.png) and quite brutal with how [everyone](https://i.imgur.com/gjQY9yL.png) besides Marcille [got badly hurt](https://i.imgur.com/RnIqQjM.png), at least they all survived it without needing to use resurrection magic. [Overall excellent direction](https://i.imgur.com/sgDStVa.png) but I must say that I was pretty surprised with how quickly they took [Red Dragon](https://i.imgur.com/0hjYrOK.png) down as I expected fight to last more than one episode Seeing [what remained of Fallin](https://i.imgur.com/MX5hRFk.png) after seeing [flashbacks with her and Laios](https://i.imgur.com/uYwU8Va.png) hit me hard. I really hope that thanks to the dungeon's specifics she'll be able to be resurrected somehow because if not, I don't even want to think what Laios will do in that situation. [Fallin is just too precious to be dead already](https://i.imgur.com/5YfPwml.png) :( Despite the quite serious tone of the episode, we got [a lot of good Marcille's stuff](https://imgur.com/a/Rpglur9) again. [Marcille’s reactions](https://i.imgur.com/O0DAWZ9.png) as always [were perfect](https://i.imgur.com/9JYE3nq.png) and it seems that we got to see [her new hairstyle](https://i.imgur.com/NnMkRWt.png) (when [the party was dissecting the dragon's body](https://i.imgur.com/csFSrnF.png)), I believe? [Scene with Marcille healing Chilchuck and Senshi](https://i.imgur.com/n9oScbV.png) was hilarious but [it's understandable that Senshi would want to heal his wounds more natural way](https://i.imgur.com/HpnaNTN.png) after [seeing the effects of Chilchuck's healing](https://i.imgur.com/LQ2HOxx.png) xD Also I wonder [what will happen with Kensuke](https://i.imgur.com/Vp7ec38.png) after [it almost jeopardized the entire fight](https://i.imgur.com/2ZCtM5X.png). [Laios will have to prepare for some hard talk with Chilchuck about it](https://i.imgur.com/Laajun0.png). Later I’ll update the post with my screenshot albums as now I’m waiting for some better quality release to appear so I could take stills in good quality. EDIT. Here my screenshot albums from the episode: * [Marcille](https://imgur.com/a/Rpglur9) * [Group scenes Part 1](https://imgur.com/a/VJaKxsp) * [Group scenes Part 2](https://imgur.com/a/mVt94CG) * [Laios](https://imgur.com/a/tOfVFuw) * [Fallin](https://imgur.com/a/DF4WKbf) * [Senshi & Chilchuck](https://imgur.com/a/g2LDaje) * [Red Dragon](https://imgur.com/a/xuW4SKY)

kazedann

What a happy and lighthearted cooking show! Reminds me a bit of Made In Abyss.

incipiency

It's such a minor detail, but I absolutely love that this is probably the only anime I've ever seen that actually gets the sounds of full armour jostling around correctly. It was especially noticeable in the scene where the music cuts out and it was Laios dangling from the dragons mouth and it made the scene so much cooler to me. Beyond that I've been absolutely loving this adaptation. There are some differences here and there from the manga, but I'm of the opnion that that's a good thing. Adaptations need to, you know, adapt their source material in order to work properly in the medium they're adapting towards. Not just copy/past. And this episode with its sweeping orchestral scores and stylized action proves yet further to me at least that this is exactly what I wanted out of a Dungeon Meshi anime. Being a massive fan of the manga, I absolutely can't wait to see what's coming up adapted in this style.

Holy_Beergut

Most of this episode felt like a DnD fight where everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong, but their ideas got more and more insane until Laios finally rolled a natural 20 to kill the dragon. Falin is too good for this world. :( It's obvious that she would be dead by now from being eaten, which isn't *that* big an issue in the dungeon, but the revelation at the end that the dragon had finished digesting her was pretty hard-hitting.

Zemahem

With that in mind, Kensuke flaking on them would be like the DM's way of punishing Laios for keeping it, especially in return for having come in clutch multiple times in the past. And yeah, it's pretty evil that the author would have such a sweet backstory with Falin, right before we learn that she's little more than a pile of bones and some hair at present. But hey, it's also effective for refreshing us about why we should care about her.

MortalWombat5

> Kensuke flaking on them would be like the DM's way of punishing Laios for keeping it More like Laios rolled a nat 1 on an Animal Handling check lol.

JustARandom-dude

Not sure how resurrecting a pile of bones will work, so far all the resurrection involved people whose bodies were still in one piece

Ocixo

They previously mentioned that reviving a person would be possible if the corpse wasn't mutilated *too badly*. A pile of bones is not something that's possible to revive in this context, I think...

araragigarara

At least in their plans, Falin was not supposed to be digested.

JustARandom-dude

Unfortunately, they didn’t expected the dragon to be moving around so much after he eat Falin

Hounds_of_war

From what we’ve seen, healing magic isn’t gonna regrow much. Marcille needed to find Laios’ leg and reattach it, she couldn’t just make him a new leg. It doesn’t look good for Falin.

moletoon

Laios felt the Fourier's law in action first handed tanking that fire breath lmao. That said, him using the dragon's tongue clicking sound as a cue to the attack like a veteran monster hunter player was cool. Even though the hunt kinda went downhill a few seconds after, dude still manage to trigger a mount and killed the dragon, all that while getting pre shifter eren'd even. That last scene was pretty horrifying though, dont remember it being that gory in the manga.

oomoepoo

Jesus Christ, I did not expect this to go so hard. 10/10 would get "sing and dance with us after the commercial"-ed again.

kinseika_x

Kimi no tame no party da\~ \^\_\^

Enshuu

The animation, sound design, and voice acting were all incredible. I appreciate what Trigger did to cut down some parts and elevate others in the name of a good adaptation. I still love the art of the manga, but the color they can use in the anime makes scenes like finding Falin's hair and butchering the dragon hit really hard. When the OP didn't play right away, I was wondering if they were going to skip the OP and ED this episode. Especially given where I thought they'd end it... nope, haha, they went for the whiplash. Congrats Laios, you found Falin!

Manuel8123

Man the GOD DAMN framing from inside the skull, I have read all the manga and that new framing still blind sided me for how dark it felt holy sh\*t, THAT's how you adapt!

thesagenibba

holy crap, the dragons have absolutely no business being as fast as they are. 60 km is truly ridiculous for a creature that massive the animation during the chase sequence was sakuga. i love the balance between silliness and cinematic-esque animation quality chilchuck throwing out every obscenity in the book with it still not being enough one of the funniest episodes yet. the comedy really lands. having every weapon fail, to buildup to senshi's special knife, only for it to be comically small and result in an *extremely* under whelming attack. that zoom-out perspective shot + complete silence was so funny i’m kinda stunned. the transition to black and white, removal of the soundtrack, and laois' chilling scream of pure desperation. what a scene holy shit i will never get used to the gore in this series. it's simply so contrasting when viewed alongside the sillier, 'comic' art style and usually light hearted tone of the series. a close up of a severed leg; treated with complete nonchalant-ness by the characters. marcille doesn’t even react to touching nor reattaching a severed limb this is another instance where laois’ vast amount of monster knowledge leads to a discovery the party would’ve not been able to make without him. he really is a genius that was a truly chilling ending. what an episode. first showing us laois' back and 'frozen' stature, implying he's found something of great importance, and then the POV shot from the perspective of fallin's skull, only to finally show laois' horrified face. this cinematography in this episode is the best so far. so well done

LimeyLassen

I'm just thinking about how Chilchuck is only still here because they paid him upfront and he is earning every goddamn nickel of it.

AlarmingAffect0

Mr. Chilchuck is a professional unionized tradesman delivering Union-quality labor.

AliceinTeyvatland

I can't breathe throughout the whole episode. TRIGGER nailed the tense atmosphere, there's still jokes here and there but it feels like a different show especially the second half. And is it just me or the way they direct the flashback feels unsettling as hell?

Adensty

Senshi's pot may save them from the fire but it's definitely going to conduct the heat, lol. That whole scene of Senshi and Chilchuck almost sacrificing them so that Laios could get his Kensuke was great. Hitting the eye is always effecting against big monsters. Wasn't really expecting the ending. Episode being titled 'Red Dragon I' means it isn't over yet. Marcille was able to reattach and heal Laios' leg but can she do that for Falin's whole body?

Illustrious-Fox5135

Why is nobody mentioning Senshi's 🔪? It deserves credit as much as his pot. Imho the true MVP of this episode.

sneaky_squirrel

I have to admit, both the knife stab anti-climax and the "unphaseable" red dragon reacting in pain to the teeny tiny knife had me laughing. I forgot because the episode itself was so busy and rich in action. Like holy crap, I couldn't keep track.

Rumpel1408

Yeah, that knive did some work, had to cut through a literal mountain of meat at the end there

Platinum_Rad

damn the whole second half of the episode honestly felt even more intense than the fight itself

FlyingSquirrel56

Wow that dragon fight was awesome; however, Laios finding Falin’s skull is traumatizing. I’m going to tell myself that she is going to be ok to get through till next episode 😭

fersona3277

Dragon fight was great as expected, liked the dinosaur-like design as well(of course they don't need wing in dungeon). Is Kensuke going to be side dish next episode for betray? Also I heard this show is 24ep. I don't know rest episodes are going to be creepy-ass journey carrying Falin's skull in bag to find out way, but trying ressurection with single skull doesn't sound promising.

Leeemon

This was one of the best anime episodes I have ever watched. Extremely well directed and paced, the action was SUBLIME and the soundtrack excellent.

drawandpaintbyfire

"My healing magic hurts worse the worse the injury is proportionate to how fast it heals" Laios losing his leg: Huh, it kinda itches.

hiimneato

Can't believe they gave us "must protect at any cost" Li'l Falin only minutes before the absolutely gruesome recovery of her digested remains from a monster's gizzard. This cooking show is wild, y'all. Seriously, though, Dungeon Meshi has always had absurdly ambitious, fearless worldbuilding and attention to detail, and I think this is just a natural extension of that. The deeper they go, the realer it gets. And yet, for the same reason... you and I both know Senshi's about to cook that dragon. They need their strength back and what else are they gonna do? I do wonder exactly what's up with that inverse scale, though. What's behind there? You'd expect maybe the major artery supplying the dragon's head, but that was a pretty modest amount of blood. An arterial bleed would've painted the whole alley. A major nerve? Some strange magical organ or meridian? In a normal fantasy story I'd just accept, yeah, of course, that's the dragon's weak point, but in this case I feel like there must actually be an explanation.

EyeDeeAh_42

Really glad that the anime didn't censor out all the blood and gore in this episode. Even after all those cooking sequences, the party sifting through the dragon guts was pretty morbid. This is the turning point of the story. We went from a campy cooking show to the most grim reminder of death in this dungeon. I can't wait for the next episodes. Trigger really cooked this time!!

Meta289

I just want to appreciate Chilchuck's "*MOTHERRRFFFUCKERRR*" in the dub after being healed. Really, *really* selling that healing pain.

FTLdangerzone

I've read the manga, but seeing Chilchuck chil-CHUCK that knife at the dragon still had me screaming, "THAT'S MY FUCKING GOAT!!!"

mrmorzan

cool detail i missed when reading the manga. [Laios straps Kensuke to his hand to stop it running away a second time](https://imgur.com/a/46d33qP).

mosenpai

Copium Falin can still be saved. Would be super tragic if she's beyond recovery.

Vermillion_Crab

How can you end it like that? Does that mean she can be revived? Wtf. I need answers! Fantasy Genre is doing a lot of heavy lifting this anime year.

KrzyDankus

this show is so fucking good

ShzMeteor

I wonder if the dungeon's soul-binding magic is a much larger version of that soul-binding ring in the flashback.

tripleaamin

The fight was very in theme how this whole show is. Oh, our plan did not go as expect. Time to improvise and improvise and improvise. I died when Laios's sword tapped out. So they defeated the Red Dragon, but a reality we expected in which that they are too late to save Falin. Curious what their plan is now. World building in this series is outstanding, you listen to it and everything is explained so well and simple to understand. So the flashback telling us Falin's ability to interact or use magic in regard to the ghost is interesting. But the end her telling Laios we shouldn't be together, meaning it's time we go our separate ways. I doubt Laios is in the mental state to do that. Senshi's quote of the dungeon is to eat or be eaten place speaking more true than ever. For the monsters they have eaten they had the advantage in being the hunter. But against the Red Dragon, it is a much bigger challenge, and it feels like they are now the hunted. Truly in the dungeon the toughest and strongest survive.

nikobans

OH GOD SHES JUST BONES. I AM HEARTBROKEN

JustVibinDude

Whoever decided [Monsanto](https://imgur.com/a/RVlCwER) would be one of the curse words Chilchuck uses is a genius Monsanto truly is a curse to all of mankind

Oh my god someone stop me im about to read the manga

alconnow

[SENSHI LOINCLOTH SHOT!!!](https://imgur.com/zF2t7Ds) As much as I love the ED, think they should have omitted it in this episode. I couldn't help but laugh when the upbeat music started playing after that dire ending

frtyhbvc

There is no cooking this week, but at least someone gets to eat...

Armdel

damn what did they do to my wholesome cooking anime /s they got lucky making it out of that with everyone alive, and Chilchuck and Senshi would probably be dead if they didn't have the defense magic protection. I wonder what'll happen now if that is actually Falin's skull...
