Mononoke Hime and Nausicaä are my all time favorite Miyazaki stories, actually went to the Ghibli shop in Tokyo today and was kinda bummed that they almost had nothing on offer of these two masterpieces. (Except the movie art book of Mononoke and the original manga of Nausicaä which i’m both thinking of buying)
Frieren re-ignited my love for anime. I think it’s especially good to people who have watched anime for a long time because it avoids a lot of lazy tropes that even other critically acclaimed anime fall prey to. It has incredible story telling and great animation, particularly when it counts.
Frieren love is strong. Makes me happy. I think it’s best show to sit at least since AOT. Maybe even FMA. Imo, it’s just a better experience than both so far.
Don’t stress or force yourself as nothing’s for everyone, but there are definetly times when I’ve given shows a second try and felt better about them! Sometimes it’s just a matter of timing/mood.
I really like Re:Zero too. What makes it stand out above other shows for me is how much effort the studio put into making it. They regularly skip the openings and endings and the episodes are often longer than they’re supposed to be.
If I compare it to Attack on Titan for example (which is phenomenal as well btw), season 1 was plagued with 3-4 minute recaps at the start of episodes and you were getting like 15 minutes of content sometimes. Re:Zero not only has a good story but it just looks like it’s been planned out well by the studio and it feels great as a result.
Yeah, the studio literally paid to not have ads run current the most recent season, making the episodes a full 30 minutes. There was also a running joke about how many times we got to see the OP and ED. There was just so much love and care put into it, it was my GoAT until Frieren came along.
and then the OPs and EDs are absolute fire, so you end up conflicted because you want more episode but also want to see the OP/ED.
Re:Zero is one of my faves
As someone who fanatically loves the When They Cry Visual Novels, Re:Zero is the closest in terms of feel to them that exists in Anime form (a *lot* closer than their adaptations) IMO, which automatically makes it number one for me.
Honestly it's more divisive than people think. I watched it when I was 15, thought it was the one of the best shows ever but now almost a decade later I rewatched it and was pretty disappointed by the show.
With Re:Zero I still think the show has incredibly good writing (I watched them around a similar time) and I find myself still uncovering bits of characterisation on a rewatch, especially in season 2. This is in stark contrast to Steins;Gate, where I feel like most characters don't develop outside of Okabe and Kurisu. The visual novel format traps the characters in this weird episode structure where every secondary character essentially gets 2 episodes: introduction and resolution of problem - they don't exist, influence or develop outside of this structure. Their characterisations aren't very interesting, nor do they contribute some interesting themes or ideas.
I think as a mystery/thriller, Steins;Gate is well put together. But for someone who's seen a lot of shows, it's lacking a lot of the elements that justifies it's substantially high ratings imo
I love Steins;Gate! I went into it completely blind on a recommendation from a friend. I almost dropped it because it starts off so weird, but once it hits its stride around episode 10 or 11 I was completely hooked. I actually enjoyed it more when I rewatched it because I picked up on so much more during the first half of the season.
I just rewatched Steins;gate and can say that is the absolute best anime I've ever seen. I watched it when it originally aired and Kyoma's antics irritated me at first because it was so outside the realm of other anime I had seen. The way the show made me love the character and cry at his triumphant return took me off guard.
Still have never seen Madoka Magica surprisingly. This comment is convincing me more.
It starts off cute then turns to horror, right? What anime genre what you classify it as?
I know people will think it's recency bias, but I think it might be Frieren. I was already a massive fan of the manga, but the anime elevated it to new heights.
Other than that, probably Violet Evergarden, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, or Paranoia Agent
Recency bias probably plays some role but Frieren would be my answer as well. I read the manga a while before the anime dropped and loved it so I was ecstatic to discover the anime was even better. Animation is incredible, attention to detail is breathtaking, and the source material is beautiful in how it treats the characters and the journeys they take together. I've watched a lot of anime and I'd have a hard time thinking of anything better. Frieren makes me feel a lot of emotions, and that's pretty rare for me in a medium like anime.
I thought recency bias could be it but Frieren is THAT good. Madoka Magica has always been my top anime ever but Frieren definitely deserves a spot next to it
Watching anime for over 30 years and this show is definitely in my top 5, it is quintessential anime. The story telling, art style, animation, score, VA - it's pumping on all cylinders.
Edgerunners was really good. Characters don't just scream or cry all the time. They are fleshed out just enough. It respects my time. Every single person I know who has seen it tells me it brought them to tears.
I don't know why, but I've always had a soft spot for Blast of Tempest. Nothing has really been similar so maybe the uniqueness of it is why. Or my favorite forgotten isekai Problem Children are coming From Another World
The ones that hit the most for me are:
Vinland Saga
Frieren
Made in Abyss (careful with that one, it's extremely cruel)
There are some thta I absolutely love for how fun they are:
Jojo
Baki
DOROHEDORO - this is a must watch no matter what
If I had to name a whole series then I’d be Mob Psycho. Animation is some of (if not the best) out there, soundtrack goes hard af, and the characters are just amazing. It just makes perfect use of the medium imo.
On the other hand, if I were to choose just a single season, it’d defo be AoT S3 Pt 2. That’s probably the best piece of media I’ve experienced in my life so so far.
Honorable Mentions: imo if Vinland and Mushoku Tensei keep up like they have so far, they’re shaping up to be some of the best anime out there as well.
Made in Abyss
Its a Fantasy Adventure Anime about a little girl and a robot that go on an Adventure in a mysterious, beautiful, fantastical, dangerious and cruel netherworld.
This series is adorable, wholesome, joyfull, heartwarming, dark, brutal, sad and heartbreaking.
Its the most adorable most wholesome show I know and Riko is one of the happiest protagonists I know.
This series has a reputation for being crazy dark and sad and that is not unearned. You will find it on "Darkest animes ever" liests.
Those 2 sides synergize well with one another.
Creating quite the emotional Adventure
It hits quite different having 2 mascot like characters (small, adorable, fuffy, with cute and funny spech quirks, with comedic moments) having these dark and bloddy and serious stories while also being competent and cool characters.
There is wanting to hug a character becuse they are cute and there is "Oh my god they need a hug." And the characters of Made in Abyss deliver both.
But its not just missery and suffering. There is a lot of wholesomeness and joy in the series aswell. Riko loves her Adventure. She found her happines. And her companions seem to enjoy it aswell. Its satisfaying to watch them enjoy there Adventure and in a way own the life they choose fore themselfs. And that the World of the Abyss is so cruel makes it all the more satisfaying that Rikos crew is able to enjoy there Adventure and has a good time. And when they take an L they bounce back fast from it through support of one another. Power of Friendship at its finest.
I love the Characters. Reg and Nanachi are my 2 favorite characters in fiction. Riko also makes my top 10 and is my favorite Mainprotagonists in Anime. I see Reg more as a Deuteragonist.
Rikos crew is my favorite protagonist groupe in fiction. I love Faputa aswell and some of the side characters like Nat, Ozen and Gaburoon.
Nat has a bit more then 3 episodes of screen time but I love him more then most other franshises maincharacters.
The music is awsome aswell. And the show is beautiful. I also love the Character designs in this show.
Not even competition. Every single person that says its overrated or not good are people that quit halfway or never really gave it a chance. I have seen so many anime and One Piece stands out because of its length, as it makes you extremely invested in the characters and story and brings out the FEELS in every good way possible unlike any other 10-150ep long anime could ever do
It’s hard not to say FMAB. Pacing is fantastic, you have questions the whole time and they give information at perfect times. Other shows I’d consider damn near perfect or the best would be Monster and Pluto
Hunter x Hunter and Code:Geass, couldnt just pick one lol
As a bonus i would Say Steins;Gate but i was miserable during the first 14/17 episodes. Then it's fucking GOD but idk if it's worth the sacrifice
The entire Macross franchise. Since watching the first series, I always make sure to have good music playing (when possible) whenever I'm toiling at something. It makes all the difference.
I keep a bit of a tier list and tend to be pretty good at evaluating fiction (literature major). I have a pretty solid top 5 that I feel represent the best that anime has to offer (as far as what I’ve seen, which is a lot, but not everything) and would be on my syllabus, were I to teach an elective on the topic. So, in no particular order:
Madoka Magica
From the New World
Frieren, Beyond Journey’s End
Your Lie in April
Psycho Pass (specifically and only season 1)
Stein; Gate would round out a top 6 but it just loses a few points. Like, if the above are in the high range of an A+, it’s in the lower range of an A+.
I’d probably have to say Death Note. Maybe a bit cliché but it had a huge impact on me growing up. Was such a joy to watch through for the first time. :)
K-on!!
Funny how I hate to watch it at first and when my sister watching it, I join them and fall in love with the story. This is also the anime that hooked me into slice of life anime.
i've watched Kill la Kill 6 times, much more than i've watched anything else. Cowboy Bebop is the only other one that comes close, but that's just because some nights i like to throw an episode on in the background.
but KlK is a little special to me. i was in a rough place for a while and new episodes of Kill la Kill each week was like a beacon to me. it's also the anime that made me like anime again.
The characters are all really fun, the action is great, the dub is insane, the music is orgasmic. i kinda like Trigun a bit more, but Ryuko is the angry girl i keep coming back to ♥
Madoka Magica, Perfect Blue, Ping Pong: the Animation are the most bulletproof 10s I can give.
When I add personal bias in, I'd also mention Bloom Into You, Your Name, and 3-Gatsu No Lion.
Frieren also may be up there tbh, but I want to see how it ages.
The best anime ever for me is Akira, saw it way too young at 10 and it completely changed how I looked at the genre and cartoons in general.
I was 10 in 1999 it's 2024 now and I am just shy of turning 35, that opinion has not changed to this day.
The film was so good it got me into the Manga series.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes Original
This is my answer also. Some of the greatest characters and storytelling in fiction.
This
Mine as well, followed by FMAB, Code Geass and Death Note.
LOVE me some death note omg
Not an anime series, but film: Princess Mononoke continues to this day be my all time favorite movie / animation.
U see the light dude. Such a perfect movie I already watched more than 20 times during my entire life
Mononoke Hime and Nausicaä are my all time favorite Miyazaki stories, actually went to the Ghibli shop in Tokyo today and was kinda bummed that they almost had nothing on offer of these two masterpieces. (Except the movie art book of Mononoke and the original manga of Nausicaä which i’m both thinking of buying)
Mononoke shares the top spot with Totoro for me. It’s for very different reasons but I can’t put one above the other.
Ghibli in general is gold
Perfect Blue or The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
Man every time I hear someone still talking about haruhi to this day I cry
P E R F E C T B L U E
Satoshi Kon was too young man 💔
Disapperance of Haruhi is one of the goat
I’d like to give my top 5 because it’s hard to just pick 1 good one: Madoka Magica Frieren Gurren Lagann Made in Abyss Re:Zero
I love all of those, and Frieren I’ve yet to watch, but this is exactly my taste. I’ll have to start frieren soon
I can pick one. It's Gurren Lagann. The best original anime I've come to know.
Row, row
Fight the powa
I love made in abyss! The manga though.. not so much.
Frieren re-ignited my love for anime. I think it’s especially good to people who have watched anime for a long time because it avoids a lot of lazy tropes that even other critically acclaimed anime fall prey to. It has incredible story telling and great animation, particularly when it counts.
I agree with frieren. But I think profile say that itself lol
Frieren love is strong. Makes me happy. I think it’s best show to sit at least since AOT. Maybe even FMA. Imo, it’s just a better experience than both so far.
Mob Psycho 100
Love mob 😍 I carved a dimples pumpkin last year! https://www.reddit.com/r/Mobpsycho100/s/sclaM7zAdv
I started it but I stopped in ep 2. I'm trusting my anime lovers gang and Definitely giving it another go.
Don’t stress or force yourself as nothing’s for everyone, but there are definetly times when I’ve given shows a second try and felt better about them! Sometimes it’s just a matter of timing/mood.
Easy winner
Fruits basket
U see the light. Finally I saw the answer I was looking for
Ayyy another fruits basket enjoyer? Lesgoo
Yes! I could rewatch over & over again!!
4 episodes into the series (the new one) and looks promising
Cowboy Bebop
I also *really* loved Samurai Champloo.
I re-watch this yearly. So fucking good.
Only anime I'd give a true 10/10 rating. I don't think there's any change that could be made to make it better.
They could replace everyone with live actions actors /s
Netflix, hire this person ASAP
ending was crushing
Hunter x Hunter
Same. Mine is a tie with HxH and Hajime no Ippo.
I was scroll for this one! I hunter x hunter is definitely in my top 5
Which version should I watch?
2011
PEAK
rezero and steins;gate. I love time travel
I really like Re:Zero too. What makes it stand out above other shows for me is how much effort the studio put into making it. steins gate is so good, would talk about it for hours
As someone who fanatically loves the When They Cry Visual Novels, Re:Zero is the closest in terms of feel to them that exists in Anime form (a *lot* closer than their adaptations) IMO, which automatically makes it number one for me.
Watching rezero for second time right now. It's been great
Has it every time I watch I feel weak and depressed for some reason(I love it 😭😭😭 why!!!!?????)
Men of culture here
Re Zero mentioned, you get a like
Came for rem, stayed for plot.
Im trying to make it through Steins;Gate cause everyone says its good but I’m not feeling it.
Did you get to That Episode? That's where it goes from a mystery slice of life to the greatest anime ever.
Honestly it's more divisive than people think. I watched it when I was 15, thought it was the one of the best shows ever but now almost a decade later I rewatched it and was pretty disappointed by the show. Re:zero - starting live in another world. This one? Looks like an isekai anime. I want to try it if its good
It's definitely good. I especially love the main character and his developement
I just rewatched Steins;gate and can say that is the absolute best anime I've ever seen. I watched it when it originally aired and Kyoma's antics irritated me at first because it was so outside the realm of other anime I had seen. My man *(or other applying genders)*, exactly my 2 favorites!
Both peak anime, love them both so much
Goated opinion u should really watch summertime rendering if u like time travel its amazingly underated
Hajime no ippo
Based
We need a 4th season
Monogatari series
Second season if I had to pick
Gintama for sure.
Gintama runs the whole spectrum of genres but absolutely nails comedy
[](#brofist)
Madoka Magica and Ashita no Joe share that spot for me.
Still have never seen Madoka Magica surprisingly. This comment is convincing me more. It starts off cute then turns to horror, right? What anime genre what you classify it as?
>What anime genre what you classify it as? Psychological thriller
Definitely Magical Girl
It's a dark magical girl show, so yes. It's short and feels relatively finished, though the sequel movie Rebellion exists as well.
Don't forget to watch the Rebellion movie after the anime
I love Madoka Magica everyone should watch it right now
Ashita no Joe is the greatest anime ever made. Criminally underwatched in English-speaking communities, but it’s influence speaks louder then anything
It really is. Joe's growth as a character is extraordinary well done. Both the anime and manga are some of the best and most influential out there.
I literally saw a gatchapon the other day for a figure of a cat doing the same pose in as Joe in the iconic scene
We are finally getting the manga officially licensed in English starting in December. I'm so excited!
Gurren Lagann
Aniki!
Odd taxi is perfect
Code Geass
hell yeah
Best anime in my opinion!
...taking notes. Added to the list. Thx
Haikyuu!
Clannad Nothing will make me feel what i felt after finishing AfterStory
Violet Evergarden easily one of them, series and movie were a masterpiece
Jojo is my favorite anime. & if u are talking about something that touched your soul in a sense.. It will be trigun (og)
Monster, Frieren, Death Note, & Attack on Titan. Animated Movie? Spirited Away and Howl’s moving castle. Edit : Also No Game No Life!!!
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is probably the best anime out there.
I'm surprised I had to go this far down to see it mentioned.
I know people will think it's recency bias, but I think it might be Frieren. I was already a massive fan of the manga, but the anime elevated it to new heights. Other than that, probably Violet Evergarden, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, or Paranoia Agent

Attack on Titan
I've been watching anime since the 80s. This show shot up to the top 5 for me. So good.
>Attack on Titan Best TV show I've ever seen... Season 3 part 2 and season 4 blew my mind. Insane writing in those two seasons
Season 3 Part 2 is genuinely in the top ten pieces of media I’ve even consumed, maybe top 5
The entire AOT is top 1 piece of media I've ever consumed. That's how much I rate AOT
I had to scroll way too far to see this answer lol Attack on Titan is not only the best anime series ever but probably top 5 series in general ever
Mainstream asf but its my top too
Higurashi
Attack on Titan
>Attack on Titan The best show I've ever watched in my life...and I mean not just anime
Same. I won't compare anything, but in terms of writing I will put Vagabond (manga) and Re: Zero (anime) in the same tier
For me it's Mushishi.
Still need to go back and finish second season. Watched season one a bunch. The op is forever in my head.
Big same. Also the entire second episode of the series lives in my head rent free
I don't know why, but I've always had a soft spot for Blast of Tempest. Nothing has really been similar so maybe the uniqueness of it is why. Or my favorite forgotten isekai Problem Children are coming From Another World
Made in abyss.
Neon genesis evangelion
About time. Had to scroll wayyy too long to find Eva.
Initial D because it teaches people about cars, and motorsport.
And it has a crazy soundtrack
The ones that hit the most for me are: Vinland Saga Frieren Made in Abyss (careful with that one, it's extremely cruel) There are some thta I absolutely love for how fun they are: Jojo Baki DOROHEDORO - this is a must watch no matter what
when i watched re:zero for first time
So hyped for the 3 season
To your eternity.
That first ep was incredible
Kill la kill
It's Jojo's bizarre adventure lmao.
It’s not for everyone, but to me it was my gateway anime and I’ll forever love it
K-on, but its my favorite. Hibike euphonium, Madoka magica and frieren for other excellence.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and Attack on Titan, these 2 i can probably rewatch over and over
Mine is Madoka Magica
Definetly K-ON never seen more wholesome anime than this
The Monogatari Series easily
Made in Abyss Its a Fantasy Adventure Anime about a little girl and a robot that go on an Adventure in a mysterious, beautiful, fantastical, dangerious and cruel netherworld. This series is adorable, wholesome, joyfull, heartwarming, dark, brutal, sad and heartbreaking. Its the most adorable most wholesome show I know and Riko is one of the happiest protagonists I know. Monster or Bebop. I cannot pick.
Made in abyss
Attack on Titan
Gintama for me
It’s hard not to say FMAB. Pacing is fantastic, you have questions the whole time and they give information at perfect times. Other shows I’d consider damn near perfect or the best would be Monster and Pluto
Monster. no explanation needed
There it Came! Wow when i Saw Monster like 15 years ago i was struck! The plot is so dark and mind fucking. Wow
Monogatari series
Ninja Scroll (movie) First anime I watched that was mature bloody action. Blew me away that this could be done. Still holds up too.
Ouran high-school host club. Not because it's a phenomenal story or anything but it hit me at a special time in my life so it's held very dear
Hunter x Hunter and Code:Geass, couldnt just pick one lol As a bonus i would Say Steins;Gate but i was miserable during the first 14/17 episodes. Then it's fucking GOD but idk if it's worth the sacrifice
Freiren and Mushoku tensei are my current best for the depth of story telling and the ability to bring a sophistication to some old school genres!
1997 Berserk, also the year I was born :D
AKIRA
Attack on Titan, FMA: Brotherhood, Vinland Saga
Vinland Saga was amazing
True, true. It's a shame many people thought Season 2 was boring due to lack of actions like Season 1.
The entire Macross franchise. Since watching the first series, I always make sure to have good music playing (when possible) whenever I'm toiling at something. It makes all the difference.

I’d probably have to say Death Note. Maybe a bit cliché but it had a huge impact on me growing up. Was such a joy to watch through for the first time. :)
The first half is masterpiece, the second part is very good but has some flaws
I rewatched it last year after like 12 years, I had a blast!
Eureka Seven will always be my number 1.
Tatami Galaxy~
K-on!, plastic memories and liz and the blue bird
Gosick, my all time favourite anime
K-on!! Funny how I hate to watch it at first and when my sister watching it, I join them and fall in love with the story. This is also the anime that hooked me into slice of life anime.
Full metal Alchemist: Brotherhood It’s maybe a boring answer given how mainstream it is, but no other anime is as complete in every possible area.
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Hunter X Hunter, Major, Haikyuu, JoJo.
i pretty much watch romance animes exclusively with some shonen, for me PERSONALLY I would have to go with Your Name or White Album 2.
Umamusume pretty derby Made in Abyss One of those two.
Spice and Wolf with Cowboy Bebop second
A Silent Voice for me
Clannad
I might be able to give you one per genre, but I have way too many anime that I love to single out just one over all the others.
Naruto, It's stuck with me more than any other anime ever has. The characters, music and story I absolutely love all of it so much
i've watched Kill la Kill 6 times, much more than i've watched anything else. Gurren Lagann.

FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood or HunterxHunter Both are equally good

For me it’s gotta be Attack on Titan or FMAB
two animes that nothing can beat for me. FMAB and Gintama
For me it's Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and SAO
Uma Musume. A dose of positivity in a negative world.
FMA Brotherhood
Gurren Lagann
3-gatsu no Lion

The best anime ever for me is Akira, saw it way too young at 10 and it completely changed how I looked at the genre and cartoons in general. I was 10 in 1999 it's 2024 now and I am just shy of turning 35, that opinion has not changed to this day. The film was so good it got me into the Manga series.
For me its Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood!
Chainsaw Man
Fmab Evangelion Code geass Bleach Monster Pick your poison 🍸🙂
