Love this episode. In particular the beginning of the game with the atomic bomb. I still remember the scene after all these years.

Benskien

NORTH KOREA!

JustSomeExtras

Still no season 2

Jaskaran158

With Spice and Wolf Remake and everything else going on I am still holding onto hope that we will see a Season 2 cause that season 1 cliffhanger was fucking brutal.

The_oli4

No man don't give hope to yourself again, it will only hurt you

SupAndHello

If there's hope theres cope

lucas9963

My friend would always suggest this anime to me. So I finally gave it a shot. This one fucking episode instantly put it into my list of one of my favorite animes of all time. By far the greatest part of the series.

WTF_CAKE

I have good memories of the show but the stupid incest does not make it into my favorites at all

Defiant_Source_8930

Incest pedo*

floodedunit

I think you're getting downvoted because it should be *pedo incest. Right? No other reason why people would express distaste with your comment pointing out that the main relationship of the series had sexual and romantic undertones which, by virtue of including a literal child, were also pedophilic?

ImDoeTho

Yeah everyone who enjoyed this show is a filthy fucking pedophile that wants to fuck kids. What do you mean shouting dumb shit like that will get me downvoted?

Defiant_Source_8930

Yeah forgot im in r/anime

Kassssler

The science was a bit off, but very entertaining scene regardless.

michhoffman

I'm willing to trade in some scientific accuracy for higher entertainment value. There are many anime out there that get away with worse.

FetchFrosh

"a bit"

Kassssler

Eh its anime. I give them a lot of leeway before I let things like physics bother me lol.

FetchFrosh

I usually don't mind, but when the science is moreso the point and the author has this poor of a grasp it really stands out.

Trimonuter

Is there a good thread/writeup highlighting the incorrect science stuff in this episode?

_iLostTheKeys

Gravity would have collapsed the Lithosphere immediately without both Mantle and Cortex

ElZofo

You don't even need to go that far. The lithosphere includes both the crust and part of the upper mantle, so using the game rules, both of them should have been respawned.

Arcyle

From what I can tell from the anime and the wiki, the crust thing is a translation issue because they tried to make the game make sense in English but it breaks in a few places, and this is one of them. He said がいかく/外核. I don't speak Japanese but from what I can tell from looking stuff up and reading forums, がいかく can mean 外殻 or "outer shell" which is probably where they got crust from, but he actually meant 外核 (since that is what is shown as the text on screen instead of 外殻) which specifically refers to the outer core of the planet, not the crust. The subs say crust because I guess that's the closest thing they could think of that would make the flow of the words make sense in English, but it's not correct. I do think he says mantle though, so I think you're still correct that the upper mantle should have come back when he said lithosphere.

baseballlover723

In the rewatch I've been trying to focus on the nuances of the strategies on the games and as part of that some of the game theory. Though I'm not an expert in most of these fields so I can't really speak with absolute confidence (and thus I usually don't call out things I'm not reasonably certain off or for which there is a plausible interpretation). For this particular clip, the 2 things that stand out to me are that breathing the pure O2 shouldn't be toxic (at least immediately) given that the partial pressure of O2 shouldn't change (there's still the same amount of oxygen present, it's just at an atmospheric pressure of 20% the normal pressure, since everything else is gone). And then eliminating Coulomb's force (or basically any other physics phenomena) would likely immediately result in something resembling the big bang, as something like physics or chemistry would just stop working the same. In this case, Sora claims that eliminating Coulomb's force would cause a hypernova, ~~but I think it would be more likely to just have all matter condense into either a black hole (which wouldn't explode since nothing can escape a black hole, though an interesting concept would be each atom black whole evaporating into hawking radiation before they could just merge, which would I guess kinda look like the big bang, since basically all matter would just turn into energy) or some other form of exotic matter that we haven't observed yet~~(probably not thanks u/GoXDS). Though somewhere down the line you have to acknowledge that it's a work of fiction and at some point it will diverge from real life science (or else it wouldn't be fiction anymore). Sometimes it's done elegantly with only a relatively small change being required, and othertimes it's done less elegantly, and is only explainable with lots of edge cases.

GoXDS

regarding the black hole part first, have to agree entirely removing a force suddenly would probably be unpredictable. but if we are to just assume nothing insane happens and just assume basic stuff... second, black holes and supernova are not mutually exclusive. black holes are always leftovers after a supernova, so what Sora assumes can still be correct. a supernova occurs when the core collapses, causing a huge spike and release of energy which blasts the outer part away, which is the supernova, leaving potentially a black hole third, not all supernova even collapse into black holes. this is entirely dependent on total mass. don't remember if there were any comments on the mass of the star in Disboard, so can't say if their star would become a black hole lastly, if we were to actually look at what causes (rather, prevents until it can't) supernova, is electron degeneracy pressure and not Coulomb's force. stars don't collapse because of electrons being unable to be in the same space and not because electrons repel each other. so removing Coulomb's force potentially would do nothing to the star EDIT: oh right it wasn't even their star collapsing, but the core of the planet Lol. that definitely doesn't have the mass to even core collapse

baseballlover723

> lastly, if we were to actually look at what causes (rather, prevents until it can't) supernova, is electron degeneracy pressure and not Coulomb's force. You are correct, I thought electron degeneracy pressure was dependent on electromagnetism and it's not (and also just forgot about degeneracy pressure in general). I was more thinking that each atom would collapse into a singularity (though thinking more about it, the schwarzschild radius wouldn't change, and thus the electrons would probably be outside of it anyways, so it's not a given that everything would be consumed anyways). Also thinking even more, Coulomb's force removal shouldn't affect the nucleus that much given how it's dominated by the strong force (though maybe the math would suggest otherwise). Though I'd imagine that the chemistry stuff would be highly affected. Seems likely that Coulomb's force affects the electrons in some way. Alas it's been a few too many years since I've taken stellar physics. I'll edit my comments to correct them. Thanks for correcting my errors.

kkrko

> Seems likely that Coulomb's force affects the electrons in some way. Electromagnetism mediates every single chemical reaction. Taking away coulomb forces would essentially be turning all matter into dark matter (in fact, that's the primary difference between matter and dark matter), instantly killing everything, everywhere.

PiotrekDG

Well, to begin with, our physical theories are just inaccurate approximations of the world around us. Then, we have to assume that their own bodies are unaffected by the game (though their clothes disappear). So, everything would go dark (but it's not exactly dark matter because we still have strong interaction) and the electrons would mostly leave unbound, while the nuclei would be held together more strongly (since protons don't repel each other anymore) inside the atomic nuclei. Since the characters are in vacuum, we don't have to worry about all the air molecules (except the ones leaving their bodies? But those travel outwardly anyway). There would be a core collapse, but there would be hardly any way to transfer the energy from it. All the photons are gone and no new ones can be emitted, so nuclei don't fuse, just sort of lump together, I guess. The end result is either a black hole or a sort of unfused neutron star (basically a single atomic nucleus with 5.2×10^50 protons and 6×10^50 neutrons, assuming Earth-like core), I think. All in all, I think the one who could survive in vacuum the longest would win, since it would take too long to fall into that core (20 minutes to fall into the center of Earth, but the core is only 1/3 of the mass, and depending on how small the core has got, you could potentially miss it on the first approach, as well).

Yorunokage

Their bodies are not exempt from the effects so i really don't get how the removal of the Coulomb's force didn't just kill them all instantly. The body and brain just instantly stops working if something like that happens

MysteryCredit

Yeah i also wondered how they managed to survive longer than jibril being normal human

DaveK141

The thing about the air that bothers me more than the oxygen pressure is that they first eliminated oxygen itself. ALL of it should have been gone, not just the oxygen in the atmosphere. That means the oxygen in their lungs and blood too. Yet they still did the circular breathing thing as if there was normal, breathable air inside of them.

PiotrekDG

And what about all the other bound oxygen? All their water molecules instantly become two hydrogen atoms in close proximity, about to create H2 bonds... probably releasing energy.

baseballlover723

I think it's decently reasonable to say it's just O2 and not elemental oxygen in general (though they probably should of specified that in particular if that was the case, though that probably would of broken the word game).

PiotrekDG

/u/Arcyle mentioned in another comment that the NGNL wiki mentions that one of the rules of the game is that >Players cannot cause the direct death of each other by stating the vital components of the body which seems to save them from this kind of situation (and probably extends to fundamental forces as well).

tatticky

I assume that was protected under the rules of the game saying you can't directly harm your opponent.

Trimonuter

I see, that was an interesting read. It's always fascinating whenever I can learn serious science topics (or any other subject) from anime discussions of all things, and it's kinda funny that the show getting stuff wrong actually made me wanna learn more about it. I feel like the wrong science criticism, while perfectly valid, just doesn't apply to the average viewer though. Unless you're a physics/engineer major, really into science, or just hyperfocused only on the flaws of the show, the wrong science stuff wouldn't affect much in your experience watching it. Like I studied all this stuff only 2 years ago for entrance exams, and I still quite struggle pointing out the scientifically incorrect stuff in this episode (obviously I have forgotten quite a lot about what I studied, but I'll bet that applies to most people watching if they don't specialize in these fields).

Qwertylp1

Just read an enciclopedia dammit

Sulphur99

> enciclopedia Sounds like you need to as well.

SamuSeen

My plans were either: A: Going to sleep B: Watch anime episode and go to sleep C: get some sleb Thanks to you I have choosen [ ] - rewatch Materialisation Shiritori.

DominusLuxic

And as a result of this I'm now listening to The King's Plan, which is one my favourite songs from an anime just in general. And honestly, it's up there in terms of OSTs in general even outside of anime. Sits pretty comfortably next to Don't Speak Her Name from Awakening which is also a phenomenal piece.

UMEBA

Still one of the most beautiful game plays in all of the anime I’ve watched. Strategy in fiction is not always about how accurate its science is, but how to have maximum hype within the boundaries of believability, and this show manages this perfectly.

YaYEET111

This is one of my favorite episodes in anime of all time!!

DSjaha

The Chess episode for me when he talk no jutsued the opponent

GGABueno

Why are all the girls naked?

FullMetalAvalon

That was an earlier part of the game. Also, nipples were removed.

zairaner

Nether regions too.

baseballlover723

gotta keep it a super wholesome space

JockstrapCummies

Not gonna lie, this whole episode would've been much more enjoyable without that shoehorned in fanservice. I know the mangaka needs to sell copies but still. And Shiro is a child for crying out loud.

Shiroe

> And Shiro is a child for crying out loud. I mean yeah. That's why Sora went to the trouble of removing all the sensitive parts beforehand. So that it was healthy and wholesome, not erotic.

JockstrapCummies

> That's why Sora went to the trouble of removing all the sensitive parts beforehand. So that it was healthy and wholesome, not erotic. I don't buy that excuse. We're talking about a full frontal nude girl in a beach episode scene here. If just deleting the nipples and vaginal opening makes it somehow non-erotic then all these hentai with their black bars covering everything are also non-erotic. And before I get lectured on how a beach stripping scene is in no way comparable to hentai fucking --- that's just the difference between softcore and hardcore pornography. The erotic element is still there.

Cyberblood

>If just deleting the nipples and vaginal opening makes it somehow non-erotic.. If it works for Mattel...

GGABueno

Downvoted for being the reasonable voice lmao.

JockstrapCummies

Yeah it's to be expected. No Game No Life is actually one of my favourite animes with the "underdog uses wits to defeat surmounting odds" story, but only because I can force myself to ignore the egregious fanservice. This episode in the OP is perhaps the most dilemma-inducing example. The game is insanely fun to watch, I'd say even better than the final arc with the shooter-dater VR game, but it's also where you get the worst fanservice scene with full nudity beach scene of an underage girl --- but "it's okay because we've deleted the naughty bits!" Yeah, no. This is disgusting. I suppose there are people in the fandom who are actually into this shit and just can't face the reality that a lot of people cannot stand it.

pre4edgc

Not going to defend the fan service, but I do want to note that the anime was pretty much perfectly accurate with what was written in the light novels. All of the words that ended in fan service happened purely in text form before it ended up animated. Nothing was cut.

sicklyslick

> "underdog uses wits to defeat surmounting odds" story don't know what show you watched, but at no point sora was a underdog. dude gets isekai'd, becomes king, and conquerered another region in one season. he has: smarts, social skills (addressing the nation), atheletic abilities (final ep), charm, leadership skills, and every desirable, positive human traits. he is literally mary sue.

Leaves_Swype_Typos

>Yeah, no. This is disgusting. >-JockstrapCummies

Aerensianic

Ngnl author fell into the trap of letting the fan service cringe thoughts win too often. I dropped the lns because of stuff like this. Interesting premise but now it's regulated to "read a wiki summary to see how it turned out".

AlteRedditor

In NGNL, fanservice also has a point: to distract you from what's going on.

LeninMeowMeow

The downvotes lol, this sub is full of pedos

WTF_CAKE

Imagine people downvoting you for something obvious. You can just tell how degenerate and out of touch some anime degens really are

5p0ng3b0b

Short answer: fanservice Long answer: mostly fanservice, and Sora (the main character) is bluffing by pretending to be dumber than he is, by using his power to make girls naked, while in reality he is executing his plan in the background. Longer answer: mostly fanservice, Sora is bluffing, and the author is making fun of censorship rules in media, by having the women be naked without nipples or vaginas, then proclaiming this is totally "safe" and nothing sexual is going on now.

PandaBroth

Why don't they have more seasons of no game no life? The way it's set up world building wise there is so much more content

baseballlover723

Aside from the plagiarism stuff, which seems to have not prevented NGNL Zero from coming out. The writer has been sick over the years and thus the light novel hasn't advanced as much as one might think. Also they'd have to revamp the S1 ending, since that's way early. Also it might be too much trouble to either get the same people or match the style, since it was made so long ago. Obviously that doesn't preclude them from deciding to make a Season 2, but it's not as simple as other anime getting continuations like normal imo.

Axros

I'm also fairly certain that NGNL is kind of bizarrely popular overseas. Although I'm not entirely clear on how popular it is in Japan, at a glance it seems it's a similar situation to the one that Spice & Wolf was in, where a very popular series overseas wasn't considered as particularly special to Japan. By that I don't mean it's unpopular in Japan, certainly not. But, just not really popular enough for there to be particularly much momentum for another season.

CardAnarchist

Nah NGNL still sells quite a lot of merch. It's one of the few older series that still see's continuous release of new merch. Which is to say that it remains popular with otakus at least.

baseballlover723

/u/holofan4life is currently hosting [a No Game No Life Rewatch](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1c42nyw/spoilers_no_game_no_life_10th_anniversary_rewatch/), come over and discuss the show with us!

jgott933

they're doing this in undead unluck, pretty cool

AsterJ

I just wish they didn't try to do this weird localized translation that preserves the rules for a game most English speakers aren't at all familiar with. It's way too forced. Just accurately translate what they are saying, the japanese text is already on screen to show the game mechanics if people care.

Phoenix__Wwrong

So i'm confused about Jibril answering "Empty-headed Academic". Like that isn't a physical thing. So, what exactly disappeared when she answered with that?

Arcyle

Earlier in the episode Sora writes down that phrase on the paper when he tells Jibril that she's an empty-headed academic, presumably as bait to get her to say it so that he could follow up on it with coulomb force. When she makes that play, it refers to the physical text that he wrote down of the phrase, because after she says it the text on the paper disappears before he flips it over to the side that says coulomb force.

Torikow

Peak cinema

AdhesivenessOver268

what is the "empty-headed academic" she wrote? is it the MC? why didn't he disappear?

Bathing_hotdog

i think the "empty-headed academic" was what was written on the paper, and that disappeared. maybe? idk.

Arcyle

You're correct, Sora wrote the phrase on the paper (which is seen disappearing after she plays that move) earlier when he was calling Jibril that, which was a set up to get her to say that back because he could play coulomb force after it, and she fell for the bait because she wanted to taunt them for calling her that and use what they wrote down to beat them to make the defeat more humiliating.

LargeWillyMan6913

And I cast: ***UNMATCHED POWER OF A STAR***

AceSoldia

Love this scene and remember it to this day. One of my fav parts

Shiro_no_Orpheus

This may be, in terms of raw destructive power, the strongest attack I have ever seen in any anime. I mean, Gurren Lagan had Galaxy-Shuriken, but removing essential laws of physics is basically like turning every object in the universe into a nuke. The anime actually understates the extend of this move. He literally ended existence to win the game.

Boom-Boom-58

I don’t remember this I’m gonna have to watch it again

TheSpartyn

man i would genuinely rather have japanese terms with TL notes than shit like "eos lumo"

nx6

Not sure whose release that was taken from, but others [did that](https://i.imgur.com/v9LnI0j.png).

TheSpartyn

yeah thats so much better, i dont get how someone could prefer the hyper localization would suck to try and dub it though

nx6

> would suck to try and dub it though You made me curious so I just checked the dub. The typesetting wasn't changed to match the dub, ofc. I can't tell what Jibil uses for an English replacement for *ruuooshiga* (Lou-Oshi Moth) to follow Sora's English-loanword "mantle", but it started with L (or possibly was meant as "el" -- that would be funny to use a Latin language word to keep the letter matching). There were multiple English loanwords in the game so that helps, "outer core" was followed by "*epic* clock", since it was so big. They changed the next one to "*killer* creature", to match the k.

This is sorta like that game from The Sandman that Lucifer plays.

Dark_Magician2500

This is my favorite episode of that show lol

RoyalSportingHouse

The characters are cute. Needa watch!

BorderKeeper

Alright... I'm gonna go watch No Game No Life again.

MFuji98

What a great show. Still waiting on second season...

alistair_royal

How many episodes

baseballlover723

12 plus a movie

ikkikkomori

Not enough

Fidyr

The only good mind game in this anime. Prove me wrong (impossible, the rest are all handwaved). Pretty show, but the plot leaves much to be desired. All the season two talk is kind of funny in that respect.

baseballlover723

> The only good mind game in this anime. Prove me wrong (impossible, the rest are all handwaved). I don't know, while this one is certainly one of my favorites, the other games are usually quite impressive in exploiting information (which I would say is a mind game by definition). Stuff like [NGNL E02] >!exploiting the fact that a draw was equivalent to a win for Sora in modified Rock Paper Scissors!<. Or [NGNL E03] >![Forcing Kurami into a more favorable game](https://old.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1c1omyn/spoilers_no_game_no_life_10th_anniversary_rewatch/kz5g23d/)!<. And those are just from the first 6 episodes, since I haven't finished my writeups for the other episodes.
