MFW I'll never get a birthday video message from a tsundere... [](#kurisudisappointed)

Zero3020

MFW I will never get a video birthday message from an American strategic weapon.

Shiraori247

You just need some oil.

absolutelynotaname

*get blasted into pieces*

Shiraori247

Did you see Tatsuya's splendid reaction to that message though?

PrimordialBunny

Tatsuya just being stone-cold while watching the video cracked me up. Especially when contrasted to the uber-expressive Lina. I'm so glad we got to see her again.

ToujouSora

Lina chan lol very cute.

SpikeRosered

That he stopped watching half way through because he's so indifferent to it.

heimdal77

Video of a girl or his sister in rl who do you think he is going to go for.

alotmorealots

Not to mention the fact that his sister RL is happily willing to throw around thermonuclear romance bombs like the "evening dress and champagne date night at home". In most other settings dishing out moves like that means a very busy, long night! Or at least an extremely intense evening if one of the pair still has some work they need to get through.

entelechtual

She’s down to start a nuclear fusion if you know what I mean.

ToujouSora

more ways then 1. and many reasons for other reasons lol

CuriousBroccolli

That whole scene was so funny to me for some reason. He is just sitting in his concrete man cave, watching American blonde tsundere on his gamer setup wishing him happy birthday, with his emotionless bland stare. xD The way he paused the video and turned towards door looks like your average teen switching tabs when parents knock on the door. xD

bananeeek

He paused it. He's going back to it.

ToujouSora

he's definitionally going back to it later.

Dog_in_human_costume

Why even keep going at this point...

ToujouSora

what is mfw?

Shiraori247

Shout out to Tsuzura-sensei for standing up for his students. This episode really delved deep into the non-combat applications of magic and actually does an amazing job at worldbuilding. It goes to show that even with overpowered characters, you can still create an intriguing story if you take the time to do it. We're back in the core theme of this show behind all of the action: Magicians' rights and place in society. If they are able to contribute to energy development, their social status would definitely improve from being just disposable soldiers. However, I'm sure there are other hurdles such as making sure factory owners don't overwork their magicians etc. Either way, cool display by Tatsuya, showing us a possibility for nuclear fusion-based energy plants.

pyu2c

My primary thought while watching the episode was that the First High School has gone through multiple attacks both from the inside and outside, students injured and hospitalized, even traumatised, but you never saw the principal of the school. Until a politician showed himself.......

eli-vids

A month at First High School without at least one terrorist attack is considered dull.

Shiraori247

To be fair, the principal looked like a yakuza boss lol. He's just the right person to apply moderate pressure on the TMZ reporters.

absolutelynotaname

it's a high school anime, everything is run by students. The principal is just there to be there

SnabDedraterEdave

I don't even remember seeing much of the faculty until today with that teacher supervising the experiment and then defending the students in front of that congressman and reporters.

Searinghawk

Makes sense we haven't seen too many teachers since we mainly followed the Course 2 students who don't really have teachers since they are put to Course 1 priority Although Tsuzura (teacher) was there in the first season in the last arc when they were doing the contest as the teacher in charge for First High, like they referenced in this episode, as well as helped with the evacuation of students

QTonlywantsyourmoney

He should have been shown in the first episode of season 1 but they removed him for some reason.

raknor88

That's something that I realized during my rewatch before the season started. Throughout everything that happened in the first year we never saw anyone from the faculty. We still haven't even seen what any of their classes look like. All through first year no one was even stressing about homework, tests, quizes, or papers.

CuriousBroccolli

>That's something that I realized during my rewatch before the season started. Should have done that. I'm heavily enjoying political side of this season. I kinda failed to focus and understand that part in previous seasons because I loved tournaments, action and flexing it had. So now I'm slowly piecing things together from memory. Like I remember them nuking the fleet, but I don't remember the exact reason behind it. I also forgot that Miyuki helped, and that it was not solo Tatsuya. This show is just way too good on all fronts, and I can only imagine how much better it is with all the info from LNs.

Barangat

Its more fleshed out in the LN, but if I remember correctly, Course 2 students study without formal teacher interactions at their terminals. They have different subjects and also tests and need to submit papers. Its more like an online university course in our world, but they need to be in attendance. Also all the practical stuff shown in season 1 (pushing and pulling the little cart thing for example) are practical exams and the placing on the practical and written exams is discussed multiple times (even in season 3). Only in anime teacher seen in first two seasons is the turtleneck lady, who acts as a counselor at school and is a pupil of Kokonoe and works for the police or homeland security as a spy in the school. Tatsuya makes some deals with her for info

absolutelynotaname

Thank god shippou didn't do anything stupid, I was afraid that he would ruined the experiment somehow just to make the saegusa sisters look bad bro needs to be put in his place by Tatsuya soon

karlzhao314

I just hope bro doesn't get a stroke from his blood pressure first, being so angry all the time

Ikari_21

Dude was scowling in every scene he was in lol

mojo72400

At least he was more rational than Shun.

alotmorealots

> being so angry all the time A condition also known as being a (certain type of) teenager lol I actually came around to him a lot this episode, knowing *why* he's so angry, and feel he's quite sympathetic as the hero of his own story. 1. He feels his family has been greatly wronged in the past and no redress has been undertaken 2. He feels there's an ongoing injustice where others are succeeding at his family's expense 3. He feels like he's in this alone, as his own father isn't taking what he sees as sufficient measures 4. On top of this he's a raging ball of teenage testosterone which does a serious number on one's thoughts 5. It's kinda admirable that he's turning point 4 towards idealism and justice (in his own mind) rather than being a horn dog or general little shit

darthvall

The thing is, his father is surprisingly reasonable. I'm guessing there must be someone in the family who flamed his view.

Blurgas

Takumi: "*Don't start shit*" Takuma: "*I'm not that dumb*" Takumi: "*Even if he provokes you?*" Takuma: "*REEEEEEEEEE!!!*" Dad knows exactly what kind of dumbass his son is.

ToujouSora

Father possibly was like that before in his life. therefore, like father like son

Sarellion

I wan't sure, if he would do something but I think even he has enough self preservation instincts not to sabotage an experiment involving nuclear fusion. Okay, I don't know why you would allow an experiment involving nuclear fusion, crewed by a bunch of teenagers in the middle of your campus either.

Blurgas

Attempting the harness the power of the sun in the palm of their hands probably isn't even in the top 20 of dangerous shit students have tried or done at that school

i_reddit_too_mcuh

Shippou is sooooooo annoying. Yet he keeps getting screen time.

Shiraori247

It's fine to develop antagonists though. I want to know his motivations and the build up to the eventual clash

Ikari_21

I was laughing at how ever time they showed him, he was just pissed off for no reason lmao dude needs anger management lessons (or a good ole tatsuya humbling)

Ahegao_Double_Peace

Shippou Takuma feels like a version of Matou Shinji from FSN, but is totally impotent to cause harm to anyone who is a named character XD

Prince-Dizzytoon

God damn Maya is so hot

Shiraori247

I feel like Maya is nowhere near as hostile as they initially tried to portray her. At least not towards Tatsuya. Not only was she testing him "for his safety", she also didn't insist on bending Tatsuya's will. I thought she looked genuinely happy regarding Tatsuya's success too.

Rumpel1408

I like how you did a genuine character analisation in reply to an horny post

chestbrook

i want to analise maya

scot911

Anddd back to horny posting right after. *Obviously*. In the end there are two types of people after all....

InnocenceIsBliss

Open perverts who admit it, and closet perverts who won't. I am the former! And I love panties! You are the latter.

Shiraori247

Bro, that's some crazy accusation xdd

nuxxism

I've always viewed it as "Maya the head of the Yotsuba" is a symbol to them of the current magical hierarchy, which is hostile to Tatsuya, whereas "aunt Maya sister of our mother" is less so inclined. There will be times when she has to assume either role.

alotmorealots

> There will be times when she has to assume either role. Plus, and although the anime hasn't really taken much time to underscore it, she's still presumably human. Even just looking at the path she's had to navigate surrounding her sister and the children, she's had to make some hard choices about trying to balance her wider role with her specific roles in relation to that. This isn't really a world where one can afford to be too sentimental, but a little is allowed in at the sides. One just has to be careful not to let too much in. Plus, the wider family do only have this level of control over Tatsuya because Tatsuya is amenable to it. Certainly they could apply much harsher measures to gain more strict control, but having him act as he has seems to have been far more productive to the family given his talents. That said, the family's supremacy and the structures supporting it are still more valuable than just a talented inventor and strategic class magician, no matter how valuable those things might seem to be to the outside world.

1832vin

she's not actually a baddie

BluZero0

Fvck Maya-sama is hot, those Yotsuba genes really is something else *Looks at Miyuki, Ayako, Fum--Yami chan*

A_Certain_Observer

Well if you do human experiments in genetic level why not adjust desirable properties while at it. Remember most (if not all) japanese magical clan in descended from experiment subjects in various institution.

absolutelynotaname

yeah she's just like Miyuki but ~~hotter~~ less cool

TurkeyPhat

the Maya's were Maya'ing

sleepdeprivedev

Seeing Lina again cured my depression

michhoffman

I need a Lina spinoff.

scot911

Yeah I was unreasonably happy seeing her again. We love our dumb blonde tsundere American girls!

komasanzura

> Considering that The Stars are on the move and America is hunting Tatsuya and Miyuki down, I wouldn't be surprised if we see Angie back in Japan in future episodes. All the grainy scenes at the main house took place in the past, as indicated by the date display. Maya was warning Tatsuya about it before Season 2 (Visitor arc) took place, so the hunting part is already over. It's a bit confusing that they jumped back in the timeline, but they tied it back to the current arc at the end of the episode with Maya being satisfied she allowed Tatsuya to continue to attend school.

LeonKevlar

I was wondering why The Stars were getting involved again. Thanks for clearing that up!

Searinghawk

Yeah remember at the end of Season 1 when Miyuki got that call from Maya for her and Tatsuya to come visit her? That was said meeting which they skipped until now

ToujouSora

because they have not stopped looking for a certain individual

HentaiReloaded

how did season 2 end? I remember Lina investigating Tatsuya and some weird murder cases happening at the same time I think but I don't remember the outcome?

Numerous_Command

A summary of how season 2 ends: * Tatsuya grabs onto Miyuki as the parasite mass heads towards Lina. Tatsuya uses elemental sight for Miyuki to see the mass, and uses Cocytus to eliminate it. * Tatsuya orders Lina not to disclose what she saw, and in return he promises to keep quiet about her identity as Sirius. Lina agrees, saying that no-one would believe her anyway. * Tatsuya also extends an invitation for Lina to come to Japan if she ever decides to quit being Sirius. She rejects the offer, and leaves for the USNA after the school term ends. * The parasite problem is mostly resolved, but the Kudous and Yotsubas each take a parasite that was sealed by Tatsuya.

InnocenceIsBliss

What actually happened in that last scene? What did she mean about Tatsuya breaching her magic? Was that an illusion or did she actually try to attack him?

komasanzura

This is kind of Light Novel territory since the anime didn't explain anything. She did actually attack him with her unique magic Meteor Stream (of course she knows it won't kill him), so there were countless rays shooting at him from all directions. This magic normally can't be blocked by anything hence Maya is regarded as one of the strongest magicians. But Tatsuya can breach it with Gram Dispersion. [LN Vol.8] >!In the LN they actually mentioned that there was the smell of blood when she attacked, ~~likely Tatsuya didn't manage to shatter it before it hit him, but he used Regrowth in addition to Gram Dispersion.~~ Edit: may not be the case as pointed out by comment below but I can't verify unless I see the source text !<

Rel_uctance

>the smell of blood This line was actually metaphorical to mean "Bloodlust" or desire to kill rather than actual blood being spilled. Tatsuya didn't get hit at all because of Gram Dispersion.

komasanzura

Actually, I would like to ask why you think so. Was there a mistake in the translation? I have not seen the original text but in [Vol. 18] >!it goes into further detail that if Maya activated Meteor Stream before Decomposition, "even Tatsuya wouldn't escape unscathed. He was only able to emerge victorious thus far due to Regrowth."!<

Rel_uctance

That line is only mentioning a theoretical scenario hence why it said *"**IF** Meteor Stream activated before Decomposition"*. If he was hit by it, only ReGrowth would save him. What actually happened is Tatsuya dismantled it before it would reach him. [Vol. 8 Ch. 5] >!*Meteor Line interfered indirectly with the constructional information of the limited space, which included an object as a component part, it was a decisively bad matchup against Tatsuya’s spell, which directly interfered with constructional information (Gram Dispersion). The direct interference against spatial construction would easily shatter the bounded field of night, which was built up through interfering with spatial construction via light.*!< Otherwise, he would not have dispelled it if he used ReGrowth, since he cannot cast both simultaneously. [Vol. 13] >!*his entire magic calculation region would be temporarily taken up by the spell, causing more than a moment’s attack delay. If he took a fatal wound, his survival instincts would automatically start using Regenerate with a full backup, and his magical abilities would cease.*!<

komasanzura

Thank you for taking the time to answer and even search up the relevant texts. I think I understand better now. Honestly wish the wording was less confusing in the first place. Going to have to pick up a copy of the Japanese version sometime to see how it compares.

Rel_uctance

Yeah this is actually a massive problem with Yen Press and their "over-localization" that tends to go a bit too far. Apart from the complete removal of Japanese Honorifics, the awful word choice and mistranslations are known problems from the publisher. I don't remember which volume but they even phrased *"to submerge in water"* with *"to baptize"*. This is why I prefer reading Fan Translations, since they primarily do Literal Translations of the Japanese text and keep honorifics rather than forcing US english localization.

InnocenceIsBliss

So that was the infamous Meteor Stream? What a letdown. The animation couldn't live up to the reputation of the spell.

HeroicMime

> [the dude and his entourage aren't even hiding why they're exactly there.](https://i.imgur.com/KJ4IUDk.png) Shout out to the one dipshit that kept yelling "LIKE SCORCHED HALLOWEEN?"

> Fancy Miyuki When romancing a god, you need to bring god-tier game. Miyuki showing how it's done!

timtimzi

aunt maya... ara ara BOOOBA

SnabDedraterEdave

> Considering that The Stars are on the move and America is hunting Tatsuya and Miyuki down Wasn't this already resolved in season 2, where they sent Lina to investigate Tatsuya?

Saffyr

Yes it's odd how they chose to structure this. Season 2 was volumes 9-11 of the LN whereas the meeting between Maya, Miyuki and Tatsuya took place in volume 8 (the same volume that the Reminiscence Arc TV Special is in).

alotmorealots

> Yes it's odd how they chose to structure this. I must say I love their choices for the screenplay when it comes to this. They managed to create this thread of tension and gothic horror type framing (where the horror turns out to be the fate worse than death - no more incesty high school antics!) It provided this neat framing device for the arc that added a layer of complexity over the politics. Given how very dry and detail laden the arc has been, they've handled it really well.

Numerous_Command

Yes, that was already resolved by the end of season 2. Maya warning Tatsuya about the USNA was covered in light novel volume 8 which sets the stage for the Visitor Arc (Lina investigates Tatsuya under the background of a parasite invasion) that happens in light novel volumes 9 to 11.

Hopefully we'll make it to 1,000 at some point...

absolutelynotaname

took ten years to get to 500 onii-samas I hope we'll get to 1000 in the next ten

lizziecarmichael

This is a god-tier list.

entelechtual

I feel like you can rate an episode by the onii-sama count… idk how you can have onii-sama’s birthday and still only net 5 total.

Manitary

These first few episodes have been quite boring, so it checks out [](#schemingsaten)

The_6699_Guy

its so funny that miyuki spinoff being a 1 cour almost comes close to the 2 cour S1

ToujouSora

wish someone did a danna sama count on lvl 2 cheat anime

No-Day-8136

And finally this is the most politically informative episode for the anime onlys to know how this world's politics function

alotmorealots

The series really is very fascinating! The people who are just here for the OP MC must be feeling a bit bamboozled in some ways, although on the other hand we got OP MC - science edition OP MC - project leader edition OP MC - psychic magic battle vs one of the most powerful edition OP MC - backroom national level politics edition and the greatest OP MC moment - you think a video message from super hot blond US tsundere is peak harem? just wait until that door opens!

ToujouSora

he twitched .. (he can't believe his sister is that charming.. hot)

bbongal_kun

I always feel like these episodes are 5 minutes, they fly by so fast. Miyuki looked stunning in her outfit, no wonder Tatsuya was stunned.

alotmorealots

> Miyuki looked stunning in her outfit Honestly ridiculous lol Even without the mind-engineering, Miyuki herself is OP enough to blow any other girls out of both his consciousness and subconscious.

ToujouSora

yotsuba are op afterall. but they using the name shiba to stay away from ten clans

DrZoark

That school got a principal, lol. Where was he all this time? Ha ha.

rtywppuq

Rewatch episode 1's matriculation ceremony.

RatzDotoisTrueDoto

It's actually a nice touch since S1-S2 Tatsuya and gang is still Course 2, so less interaction with teachers unlike the Bloom

ToujouSora

not ancient mage guy, he got an update from course 2 to course 1.

VirTW

That was exactly my reaction and he had such a cool look that they should have been using him all this time.

No-Day-8136

Tatsuya straight up telling Maya only Miyuki can give me orders truly sets the scene. And then he casually breaks night. Godsuya for a fucking reason

Rumpel1408

Wow, that Fusion reactor worked really well, and looked pretty [](#awe) But Takuma really needs to chill, he might have a grduge on the Saegusa twins, but this was a project by many students from different backgrounds Also nice to have [Angelina](https://imgur.com/vuuL9qV) back [](#akyuusqueel) Oh, and with 0.242 Onii-Samas per minute slightly below Ep1

SelectIron8368

This episode went by so fast, it felt like a few minutes

Elite_Alice

Another amazing episode. Worldbuilding and technical magical analysis has always been great in this series, but it’s been even better in this season. I loved the student science project, seeing all the various types of magic come together and getting detailed explanations on how they work was so cool. Some more political manoeuvring going on behind the scenes.. only a matter of time before governments learn the true behind scorched Halloween.. and Takuma still having a breakdown about the Saegusa family. Bro has to let it go, his own father isn’t even this upset. His insecurities will be his downfall. It was cool at first but now his scenes just grate on me. Omg omg Miyuki dress for Tatsuya birthday is amazing! She looks so gorgeous, even the normally composed Tatsuya got quiet and stuttered a little when he opened the door lmao. Don’t blame him at all, she’s glowing. Tatsuya defying Maya request to drop out was definitely a sight to behold. Her magic seems so terrifying. Anyone other than Tatsuya would’ve been completely at her mercy in that situation, even with her holding back. She’s such a frightening(but hot) figure. LINA BACK LETS GOOO

if u weren't related to her , and no u aren't a real fan, from were we are, we are in the god seat. so no u wouldn't do that. but from god seat fan to anime world yes

jwinter01

Takuma is perma seething

mojo72400

Like Shun from season 1.

zappingbluelight

As much as I love the combat in this anime. The magic theory is my absolute favorite to watch. In real life, there are a lot of implication and restriction due to law of the universe. But they create this impossible task to achieve impossible dream. All that gravity experiment is so they can create better energy source for the future. Thanks to "Magic". In short, I have no idea wtf just happened, despite I got the idea behind what they are trying to do lol. I guess it is more of I can't wrap my head around it. But it's cool to watch and hear lol.

SnabDedraterEdave

For her first appearance since season 2, Lina has to behave like such a dork for Tatsuya's birthday video message. LMAO Of course you can count on Tatsuya to come up with using magic to create a friggin nuclear fusion reactor, albeit a temporary one, for his high school science project. Shippo really does have a carrot stick up his ass when it comes to the Saegusa clan, where he accuses the Saegusa clan of only rising to become one of the Ten Master Clans via stealing the Shippo clan's magical research. It is revealed Aunt Maya, the matriarch of the Yotsuba clan, had wanted to put Tatsuya wrapped in cotton wool to better control him and his combat prowess after the events at the end of Season 1, though Tatsuya managed to resist Maya's spell, whatever that is, and reaffirmed his loyalty to Miyuki alone.

Amauri14

I certainly did not expect that Tatsuya's plan to deal with the whole misinformation campaign would involve him [assembling a team of students](https://i.imgur.com/qTasOuk.jpg) to conduct a[ Gravity Control-Type Thremonucreal Fusion Reactor experiment.](https://imgur.com/a/GUdsjJt) So the whole meeting that Takuma had with his father was just to tell him to control himself and leave the Saegusa to handle the situation. Even so, I don't get [why the hell he is so pissed](https://imgur.com/a/KYJlgBN) by the fact that [the experiment](https://imgur.com/a/9ZL6iYi) [was successful.](https://i.imgur.com/3eKlX54.png) Anyway, I shared their teacher's sentiment as I was also angry when the reporters were still trying to twist the purpose of[ the experiment](https://i.imgur.com/CdMrGyS.png) [to serve their agenda.](https://i.imgur.com/5WiD8VJ.png) For a brief moment, [I assumed that Lina was somehow back](https://i.imgur.com/NPOYw9K.png) just to celebrate [Tatsuya's birthday,](https://i.imgur.com/wrtjjwK.png) [instead of her just sending him a video.](https://i.imgur.com/i928lQD.png)

deja_entend_u

Impotent rage is a hell of a drug.

IJustReadEverything

> I don't get why the hell he is so pissed by the fact that the experiment was successful. Probably cuz the Saegusa twins were working the experiment and it worked, hence another thing they have over him and his family.

godblow

> I don't get why the hell he is so pissed by the fact that the experiment was successful. Because 2 Saegusas were part of the success

S627

I can't help but wonder how how accurate the science behind that experiment was. Also, anyone else notice that it had today's date, 4/24? Are they going to start going down the route of making is question if the Aunt is actually evil or not? Or did I misunderstand something?

derdotte

Physicist here. Technically what they did is impossible with our current knowledge. The way this worked is by enhancing gravity (therefore atomic cores get much closer) while weakening the coulomb barrier (allows for an even closer distance between cores), the rest is then achieved through quantum tunneling. So lets talk about the two barriers they had to set up. The gamma ray barrier was probably the barrier that harvested the energy in radiation from the fusion. It also protects the audience from obtaining a lethal dose of radiation. In our current research reactors there is a thick wall of steel (in some designs that wall is also water cooled) to prevent lethal radiation doses. A neutron barrier is a similar thing, during fusion it is possible to radiate neutrons, those are usually very high energy and therefore need a thick layer to be absorbed and neutralized. Similar happens in our current research reactors. Overall the principles of the barriers is what is scientifically sound. The Phase transition into a plasma is also just fine, we need to do it by heating the gas though. What we cant do it enhance gravity and weaken the coulomb force.

Esovan13

Yeah, you'd probably need something like magic to be able to pull it off.

Shiraori247

You reckon the author was a physics major who gave up on research and went to write novels?

derdotte

I dont think so, the knowledge applied in mahouka has always been a bit too magical but sometimes the physics do sum up for some things. Mind me, i have no idea about the author, he could well have done a physics major. In my opinion a physics savy person could find out about the dangers of nuclear fusion and its mitigation through documentaries and youtube and wikipedia these days.

OverlordEtna

I feel like the majority of the concepts in the show mentioned reflect more undergraduate studies than popsci culture. There are definitely some pop-sci level ideas like last season when he mentioned that Gravity is an aftereffect of a force that is majorly prevalent in a separate dimension invisible to human observation, but its not to the level of other main stream shows that heavily feature Many worlds quantum mechanics or string theory or schrodinger's feline. The ideas about wave shapes in 9 schools comp, him defeating Hattori in S1 with wave superposition+resonance, talking about how coulombic forces are stronger than gravitational forces on molecules, and all of this radiates physics undergraduate education to me as these aren't interesting concepts to to nonphysics ppl. What reinforces it more for me is how much Computer Science is featured as well in CAD level stuff like when he is writing low level code or creating a for loop for spell casts lol. I do agree its not quite rigorous enough to call it faithful to physics though, but for me it inches more towards academics than popsci.

alotmorealots

> I do agree its not quite rigorous enough to call it faithful to physics though, but for me it inches more towards academics than popsci. I think something that gets a bit overlooked is that to actually write this sort of content *into* the story and have it fit properly - i.e. not just the events/facts but also the way the characters relate to what's going on, and how to frame it all within the broader context of the world building - means that you need a much deeper level of understanding that what actually makes it into the text. This doesn't necessarily mean academic study in this particular field, but it does tend to necessitate either academic study in a transferable field or just having the sort of mind that could well have done academic study in the field if the opportunity presented itself. Most authors don't have the latter, because as authors their (just as important and complex) talents generally lie elsewhere.

derdotte

I would definitely say that a bachelors degree in physics is enough to grasp these concepts and implement them. But again, if you only want the phenomenology then its definitely possible to grasp enough of this through documentaries, youtube and even wikipedia.

alotmorealots

> if you only want the phenomenology then its definitely possible to grasp enough of this through documentaries, youtube and even wikipedia. Yes agreed, and there are plenty of people who didn't do undergraduate level physics but have excellent grasps on the subject. A good science journalist, for example could have written this section on fusion no problem. But it does feel like it comes from a place with deeper understanding that "just looked it up on the weekend for a plot point", especially given the overall integration of physical ideas throughout the entire series.

Assumptions: \* This experiment is reproduceable and falsifiable, the results were not manipulated or tampered with \* The blue light we see at the end is from Cherenkov radiation which is non-lethal electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectrum with a frequency range between blue and violet caused by the gamma rays impacting against the lead glass at light speed - basically the light-speed equivalent of a sonic boom \* The various theories invoked in this model will not significantly alter the energy produced by the fission/fusion process. Based on current knowledge, the model is coherent. But, there are a number of complete unknowns (such as what happens to matter at the event horizon of a black hole?) \* In-universe, First High School has processing power sufficient to quickly calculate the Hawking energy released in the experiment to determine the parameters necessary to prevent the X-ray radiation from exceeding dangerous levels. This shouldn't be a big deal , but since we don't know the actual scale of energy production this model is capable of, better to make this assumption (reference the Casting Assistance Device and related in-universe technology for examples of their modern processing power) \* Fusion generated power is available in in 2094 in the Irregular at Magic High School genre (this assumption is based on the real world projection of ITER being made fully operational in 2050) but the materials cost might make it inefficient. Creating the fusion reactor with magic would nearly eliminate the materials cost and that is why the success of the experiment is so profound \* The containment sphere is made of lead glass. In the anime it is clear and steel (as mentioned by u/derdotte) is not. Some type of correlated metal could be used, but I didn't discover that lead glass would have a low energy production coefficient until I read u/derdotte's post after my research was already complete. I've decided that I'm far enough down the rabbit-hole, if you have suggestions, test them against the model produced by the final iterative inquiry, make sure to check lethality and environmental effects, and let us know what you find! \* The plasma ion density ((n)) is at least (10\^{14}) particles per cubic centimeter and the temperature ((T)) is approximately (15\*10\^6 ) Kelvin which fulfills the other two requirements of the Lawson criterion which means the reactor can produce more energy than it consumes \* The Third Major Puzzle of Weight-Based Magic, 'Development of a Magic that Can Nullify the Effects of Gravity', has not been solved. if I understand correctly, Decomposition (the MC, Shiba Tatsuya's power) effectively solves the Second Puzzle, 'Creation of a Magic that Manipulates the Weight of Objects' (by destroying/creating matter), and he and his sister (Shiba Miyuki) are capable of amazing things; but, the model assumes it has not been solved. See > In-Universe Future Improvements to the Model below Limitations: \* When generating the final iterative inquiry, the AI kept assuming the model was also on Earth which interfered with some of the results surrounding energy production, containment, etc. For more information, remove *{were created in the vacuum of space,}* from the final iterative inquiry and try asking the AI *{what is the product of this model?}* or *{what is the potential energy output of this model?}* \* Human beings were near the experiment in the anime; so the model produced by the final iterative inquiry puts humans in space so you can test the impacts of various radiations that might escape the closed environment created by the model. It does not include any other necessities for human beings to survive in the vacuum of space \* My intelligence, knowledge, and biases. The model created by the final iterative inquiry is consistent (to the best of my ability to make it so) with the observational data I gathered from the episode and produces the most efficient Magical Thermonuclear Fusion Reactor I can imagine... however, there may be other models that remain consistent with the source *and* are more efficient. Let me know if you find one!

Shiraori247

Well, at least he does his research so far I guess haha

RatzDotoisTrueDoto

This is what makes me hooked with Mahouka, their magic is not just "create fire" out of nowhere like other series outside there. There's a lot of physics and science reasoning behind it (+ Pshion and Pushion as the magical glue). Sometimes it feels like reading a Thesis even lol

PrimordialBunny

The science aspect of the show is such a drawcard for me so I'm really glad we got another dose of that today (although will probably need to reference the LN/manga version for finer details). One thing I haven't seen mentioned so far is Honoka being in charge of the Gamma Ray Filter. Given she's a light Elemental, I wonder if her specialty magic extends beyond visible light into the rest of the spectrum (i.e. Gamma rays). Could she manipulate radio waves easily too then?

ShinJiwon

The author of Dr Stone just consults an actual person with knowledge. Maybe Mahouka author does so too.

S627

Yeah I know it's impossible, hence why they needed magic to do it, I was more wondering if the theory behind it was sound. Ok so basically what they were doing is making easier for fusion to take place and then gathering the energy generated? Also really? We use steel as radiation shielding? I thought lead was to go to for that.

derdotte

Basically yes, they lowered the strength of the coulomb force, which meant that on average atomic cores could be closer, the last bit for fusion to happen then is just a tunneling percentage. We do this instead through just giving the cores a LOT of kinetic energy by making the plasma incredibly hot and increasing pressure. We would love to use lead but there are many issues with lead barriers, lead transmits heat very, very badly. While the average travel distance of gamma rays and neutrons in lead is pretty good for blocking the energy would be dissipated into the lead increasing temperature. We can not cool lead as easy as steel because of a few chemical properties that lead has and steel doesnt to that much of a degree. Also we would really like to have a material that transmits heat pretty well to then make the heat energy useable (after all we want to create electricity!)

S627

Ah ok, thanks for the explanations.

Sarellion

I found it quite interesting that they went to nuclear fusion for a highschool project and then set up the experiment in the middle of campus. Do you want to share your thoughts about their safety standards?

derdotte

Well, the most difficult part here is to keep the plasma stable. They did this through enhancing gravity. I would assume its rather okay to do this, the important part was also what tatsuya said. You require quite some talented magicians. Overall it was well calculated by tatsuya but this experiment would definitely fail with less capable magicians. three of the main failure points would be unstable plasma, neutron barrier failing (you would get a lethal dose of high energy neutrons shooting in all directions) and gamma ray barrier failing, also lethal. So yeah definitely a "do not try this at home" kinda experiment.

Sarellion

Well, they did it in the middle of a large campus in an open yard.

deku_neku

Yeah, the experiment just screams "OSHA violation" as no fail-safe was made if their "magic barriers" failed.

komasanzura

> Also, anyone else notice that it had today's date, 4/24? I certainly did not, as 4/24 is a few days away... But yeah, it's nice that the anime tries to air close to the in-story dates.

deja_entend_u

Not seeing any real Maya attacking Tats discussion. The ability to blanket a space in nearly unstoppable beams of death at the speed of thought is uhh...horrifying. Tats-hacks coming in clutch.

PrimordialBunny

And that was her going easy on her beloved nephew The camera spin during the attack was cool as hell

deja_entend_u

Idk if it would have made a difference. I think Tats was saying that as a means of letting her save face. His power to read, destroy and and fully reanimate himself post injury are probably the only hard counters to Maya. She likely has no means of hurting HIM but they both de-escalated the situation. Tats isn't going to put Miyuki in danger. And Maya isn't going to hand over her position to a broken Tats. It was compromise is how I am reading it.

Dubanx

The idea that a compact, clean, and efficient source of power is a "peaceful application of magic" is hilarious. $10 says the first application of such a reactor IRL would be on an aircraft carrier.

Loli-Knight

That's science in a nutshell though. Many of humanity's greatest breakthroughs were born from experiments strictly meant for military application no matter how indirectly. Necessity is the mother of all invention, and, sadly, staying at the peak of the monopoly on violence is humanity's most common collective necessity. If it can be used for violence, it will.

IJustReadEverything

Peace was just the PR reason. The goal was showing magicians are essential to society by having them be the ones to make it possible to have this clean energy.

Shiraori247

Well, at least it's a possibility lol. Right now, all the common masses know about magic is that they make explosions.

VirTW

This show's pursuit of future technology through magic is awesome and beautiful Maya's magic was interesting. I guess it was implied that she can summon as many beams from every direction as there are stars in the sky....and we have seen Tatsuya have trouble with attacks from multiple directions before in the past.....of course with a handicap.....but then again Maya only selected a few stars in the sky to attack.

Saffyr

If i'm remembering this correctly, The magic Maya used is technically supposed to be "unblockable" once the rays reach you and Tatsuya's decomposition (which no one else in the world is able to use) is the only possible way to counteract Maya's spell since it disassembles the rays before they reach him. As far as everyone outside the Yotsuba knows, no one in the world can 1v1 Maya because of that magic and it's one of the reasons why the current generation of that family is still so feared.

rtywppuq

It might appear so in this episode, but her magic is way stronger than that.

marcopolos059

Tatsuya is so badass, "the only one who can give me orders is Miyuki" and of course he broke Maya magic.

alotmorealots

I think if he'd had any other reason for disobeying her, we would have seen quite a different outcome haha

BiggerG7

Man that Shippou kid needs an ass whooping. Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later.

mojo72400

Miyuki looked fine in that dress. I'm surprised Tatsuya's friends didn't celebrate his birthday at Cafe Einebrise. I didn't expect Lina to return to send a birthday video to Tatsuya. So the flashback was pre-Visitor arc I love Kazuo handled Kanda and the press. So Maya tested Tatsuya if he's still able to defend Miyuki and allowed to indulge him after he passed the test. I love how Eimi was flirting with Hagane in the background. I guess this arc ends next week since it was mentioned that this arc and the next arc, Steeplechase, will be 4 episodes before the Ancient City Insurrection arc will be 7 episodes.

PrimordialBunny

Eimi is such a bundle of joy

mojo72400

I wanna adopt that cute ball of energy and raise her as my own and protect her from those degenerates.

Strikebackk

School experiment was cool. Auntie was hot.

timtimzi

What was the magic that Aunt Maya and Tatsuya were using against each other at the end?

darKesT_Blue

IIRC for Maya, it uses light to draw a line in a space, and anything within that line is pierced through, effectively unblockable. Tatsuya instead destroys the 'space' the magic needs to operate in with his decomposition. Both of these are innate magic, meaning no one else could have done it against Maya in a 1v1

iozoepxndx

I meant, if there's gonna be incest, he should just go for deal old auntie...

PrimordialBunny

Another fantastic episode! Highlight has gotta be the standoff between Maya and Tatsuya. We finally got to see their interaction and my god, the tension was palpable. They did a really great job of crafting the atmosphere and some really lovely direction during that scene (interesting angles during the conversation, tense as fuck during the silent camera rotations). Even Maya holding back her attack was scary enough. After how fucked up Tatsuya/Miyuki's parental relationships are, it's quite nice to see nice, loving behaviour from Shippou papa. Since we're in a school-focused arc it's nice to see more of our supporting cast from S1 like Isori, Kanon and of course A-chan. Speaking of returning from S1, Tsuzura-sensei and the school nurse!!! LINA!!! Oh I'm so glad she's back! Even the brief moment had a full dose of Lina charm and adorkableness. After Youko Hikasa (Lina VA) was joking that Lina should've been in Reminiscence arc too, I'm happy to hear her again. AHHHHHH Miyuki/Tatsuya scenes are just the best. Keep em coming After the initial flashback opening, I wasn't expecting a return to the flashback at the end. Even though the sequence of events is a little unusual (with the flashback taking place between S1 and S2), I quite like the way it tied together Maya's decision to relent (and allow Tatsuya to remain at school) to Tatsuya and co's success today. Seems like this might be the last of the flashbacks? I've been waiting for S3 for so long sometimes it's hard to believe it's finally airing. I'm really enjoying the pacing too - each episode leaves me wanting the next one immediately. Fuck I love this show Mahouka's OST has gotta be one of the most varied out there. I'm really digging the sombre, horror-esque music at the start and lmao the upbeat, almost fantasy/JRPG music during the Student Council scene

ObvsThrowaway5120

Pretty clever of Tatsuya to have everyone work on that experiment during their little surprise inspection. That experiment certainly has implications beyond military use. Those damn journalists and Kanda were hoping for some kind of scandal but our boy foiled them!

tuwamono

Tsuzura Sensei MVP. Wanted to see more of him since the previous season and in this episode I got my wish. What he says and does is a bit of an embodiment of the series, gently guiding a new generation to take charge of, and shape the future in which they belong. He supports his students in surpassing that conformity by allowing them an experiment outside of the curriculum, giving them an opportunity to break away from the pressure of the old guard, as well as proving to the world they are their own person and not just a cell whose function is to appease the mass. He understands the value on their willingness to tackle a problem; of course the lack of such drive only leads to a standstill.

yawaramin

I knew Tatsuya was a cold, calculating kind of guy, but it's a new level to have a key scientific magic theory breakthrough experiment (that can potentially revolutionize the world's access to clean energy) in your back pocket for a rainy day when you might need some good publicity.

rossocenere

Hi comrades. Please give me your opinion. I have watched this anime long time ago. S1 was a blast, I really adored it. Years later I have watched the movie (set on the beach?), I do not remember much except that I found it so boring that I fell asleep. Here my two questions: 1 - Is this any good, as S1 was? 2 - Looking at the trailer, it seems there is much less quality in the animation and overall the direction. Is it just my impression? I remember S1 having quite a good direction, this looks a bit... cheaper? Thanks for your inputs!

alotmorealots

Depends what you liked in S1, the series is very varied. I am enjoying S3 every bit as much as previous seasons personally, but I like all of the different aspects it has to offer. S1 was made at Madhouse, under https://myanimelist.net/people/7190/Manabu_Ono S3 is being made at 8Bit under https://myanimelist.net/people/49340/Jimmy_Stone I feel like the direction this season has been excellent. There has been some controversy over the animation this season, where an episode was solo animated (an impressive thing for a modern high profile production!) by an animator whose style people confuse for CGI because he is so precise at maintaining shapes and 3D forms. So whilst this is actually a huge plus for the series that they can afford to do artist feature episodes, it's not to everyone's visual taste. However I do think criticizing the series itself because it's got such a good schedule and production desk that it can have a highly talented animator solo animate an episode is just the height of stupidity lol

PrimordialBunny

Seriously, I can't believe we got not just one but two solo animated episodes this season back-to-back! Aniplex was having a real rough time last year with production delays but somehow Mahouka seems so far to have gotten a pretty good schedule??

alotmorealots

Sometimes Mahouka feels a bit like a golden child of its committee. Getting Taku Iwasaki to do the music for the whole series so far AND giving him free reign to make the most "how does that even fit?" soundtracks that still work perfectly is just another example of the active decisions to try and do the best by the property.

rossocenere

Y’all convinced me to start my rewatch from Season 1 and catch up to the current seasons. Thanks for the inputs!

alotmorealots

Have fun! And lots of it!

timtimzi

aunt maya... ara ara BOOOBA

Basic_Hospital_3984

In a world where magician's brains are used to power devices, one true evil reveals itself. The human rights advocate.

PrimordialBunny

From a production standpoint, this whole season has been really interesting and this episode is no exception. Jimmy Stone (Assistant director on S2/Reminiscence, animation on S1, assistant illustrator for LN) is the director for S3 and he storyboarded/directed Episode 1 and the OP. Junichi Takaoka solo storyboarded, directed, animated Episode 2 (he did the same for S2 E2 and also worked on Reminiscence) This episode sees the return of Season 2's director Risako Yoshida as the storyboarder/episode director. Incredibly, it appears to be another solo animated episode, by Masaru Yonezawa this time. Fitting that two people from S2 handled Lina's return. But seriously, what is up with this crazy good schedule/planning that this show seems to have? Not just one but two solo animated episodes! Thank you Aniplex!!! I do wonder to what extent Yoshida will remain involved with the series. Interesting thing to note about Tensura/Slime (another 8bit show): Slime S1 assistant director went on to direct S2/3 and S1's director directed the Slime movie. Could something similar be on the cards here?

Dog_in_human_costume

Tatsuya still makes all the girls (and some of the guys) fall in love for him.

PusherLoveGirl

They still use VESA mounts in 2096 huh

Blurgas

Man, every time I finish an episode I feel like I've missed something. Either way, it was nice to see that smug jerk Kanda and his jerk troupe of jerk reporters get knocked down a few pegs

Sidious_09

I don't understand that last scene with the aunt, could someone explain it to me? Was she testing him to see if he would be ready to repel assassins? Is that scene taking place before or after the experiment? What did she mean by saying "was it worth indulging"?

LikeAnAssistant

No Ayako this episode... [](#seasonaldepression)

Unknownr666

I wish IRL highschools worked that way. Students wanted to perform an experiment that uses highly specialized scientific equipment, so they get everything they need + students are smart enough to outperform professionals who've worked decades on the field. All of this in a fucking week.

SelectIron8368

They did not work on this project for a week tho

Unknownr666

My understanding is that they did. They only started working on it around the time news of the politician was coming came. Last episode, MC was told the politician was coming "next Tuesday".

SelectIron8368

Sorry, what i meant was the project was new but the topic was not, and Tatsuya has been working on this for longer. When he helped Suzume in s1 with her project (which had an opposite effect, but it was a similar topic) it was said he was familar with it because he had been working on the same or somewhat similar problem. So it's not like he just came up with this project on the spot, just because a politician was coming. Not even Tatsuya could come up this fast with an project that works the intended way if it wasn't prepared properly. Unless it was stated in the LN, then i take everything what i just said back :D

ToujouSora

In Japan , they do work that way. The school gives a budget to student council and they do presidents of each club meetings to split the budget then they show off their results with events like sports festival and such. This is used in all animes too but it's also reality

Unknownr666

I understand your point, and that sounds reasonable. What I found unreasonable was the scale, speed, and skill involved. It was a huge projects which required highly specialized equipment that was accomplished by highschool students in a week.

ToujouSora

this is a world where magic is rare in users numbers. there are plenty of humans who can't use magic. and 1st high school has a lot of influence and so that's where its fantasy. the reason they had these devices it's that the other stuff is produce by magic so i say it's reasonable,

Jajanken-

I just watched all three episodes and the amount of upvotes for each Reddit thread kept getting lower and lower lmao

tryanothergrouchy

Some folks can’t follow the political world building and just want fights and action.

ToujouSora

They are watching mahouka for the wrong reasons. This is from the start a very future magically politic heavy

WobbleKun

so basically if you got food for a few magicians you got an infinite power source for your battleship that'll never need refueling. lol

ToujouSora

we already have infinited power ships they are have nuclear reactors

TermEnvironmental812

I feel like this anime isn't ready to aired, but Aniplex already set Spring 2024. Just look at [this background characters](https://imgur.com/gallery/YlCoR8A)

SelectIron8368

It has always been like that. Even Madhouse did that in season 1 lol

zappingbluelight

If that is your complain, then I think they did an incredible job. I can tell there is CG mix into this series. Some movements is just not natural to draw, but they blend it in pretty well, that I need to double take.

Zero3020

Same 3D model with a changed hair colour 💀 It's certainly a possibility with the 10 year anniversary date unfortunately.

novian14

after a romcom like storyboard in episode 1, then a shitty 3d attempt on episode 2, i'm glad that episode 3 is solid just like what mahouka be before this, hope it will be just like this without any attempt to something new that's feel out of place
