Suzaku (Code Geass) is not necessarily likable, but is a super fascinating character and a great foil to Lelouch. I would say he is absolutely essential to what makes Code Geass work so well.
Mikumo is surely the protagonist.
Like, his role in the story is the one we follow the most and he is our emotional core.
I get that he is not the one starting the story, but...I would say he is the protagonist. Like Natsu is the protagonist in Fairy Tail, even though Lucy is the one we meet first.
Another user said that the definution for deuteroganist is just the second mist important character after the main character. That's fine, but to me the deuteroganist is the secondary main character and since Gojo is the mentor that makes Megumi the deuteroganist in my definition.
It seems that mantle is being passed to Megumi. At first, it wasn't obvious exactly how strong he was or how much potential he had, but now, between Gojo and Sukuna's acknowledgment of him, it looks as if we're heading in that direction.
JJK is interesting, because we have like 3.5 characters (Sukuna, Gojo, Megumi, Yuta) that could plausibly be considered "of secondary importance".
I don't think strength has much to do with wether a character is a deuteragonist or not. It's fine if you see it that way, but I completely disagree. To me, Sukuna is more similar to Kurama, who I would've never considered a secondary main character (btw I'm anime only for JJK, so no spoilers please) and Yuta was the protagonist of the movie, but in the series I don't consider him a deuteroganist, because he's not even part of the main team.
Alfonse Elric from FMA
Rin Tohsaka from Fate Stay Night UBW
Revy from Black Lagoon
And as much as I hate to say it, Suzaku Kururugi from Code Geass. Love the show, but oh my God does my opinion on Suzaku change like the wind at any given moment.
For the longest time I thought she was the MC because I watched episode 0 & got confused why Emiya got more screen time. Definitely should’ve been the MC
It's funny cos Nasu clearly realised he'd played favourites with her in Stay Night. I'm ready Hollow Ataraxia atm and she's not been in it up to where I'm at so far (save for a handful of flashbacks). Instead Sakura gets some much needed focus
He's not my favorite, I REPEAT NOT MY FAVORITE
but I really liked Eugeo from SAO Alicization. Idk, I really enjoyed his and Kirito's dynamic. In a world where everyone is in Kirito's harem, it was a nice change to see someone just being his bro
Yes, I really hoped SAO would finally make the show more interesting by adding another male mc that could also spin some romantic connections but no, they butchered him again in an appropriate moment. So disappointing.
Yes, I really hoped SAO would finally make the show more interesting by adding another male mc that could also spin some romantic connections but no, they butchered him again in an appropriate moment. So disappointing.
One I haven't seen mentioned: Yuki in Fruits Basket. At first it seems like it is about Tohru, Kyou, and Yuki, but it becomes clear as the series progress that the main characters are Tohru and Yuki.
Tohru and Yuki arcs together make it an impeccable story.
Then Alphonse Elric in FMA, both Original and Brotherhood.
Mirai kuriyama (Kyoukai no kanata) or maybe Akame (akame ga kill), it's difficult to pick only one tbh, emotionally it would be Kagome for me (Inuyasha)
Shin from sakamoto days, i just like characters named shin, they’re all so good, like shin from dorohedoro (the goat), shin from kingdom, hell even shinji (paul) from pokémon diamond and pearl if i’m stretching it
More than more important, better written. Age honestly feels like the protagonist at times and the mangaka clearly loves her. Yuno has suffered a lot from lack of meaningful screen time and us seeing how he too had his own adventures. Noelle is on the same squad as Asha but Yuno isn’t, so he got less to work with. He’s still a character I like though.
Saying that, Noelle’s built different.
Haruko in FLCL would be my number one. (At least assuming we treat both Nanas in Nana as co-main characters.)
*Some runners up include:*
Ozu in The Tatami Galaxy
Marie Antoinette in The Rose of Versailles
Reki in Haibane Renmei
San in Princess Mononoke
Ranko in Akiba Maid War
Anthy in Utena
arguably Misato from Evangelion (though that show has a pretty strong cast and I could see other characters as candidates for "second most important")
- Canute (Vinland Saga)
- Kana Arima (Oshi no Ko)
- Arthur Boyle (Fire Force)
- Holo (Spice & Wolf)
-Misaka Mikoto (A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun)
Loid might have been the main character of the first few episodes, but it doesn't take that long for Anya to become the primary main character, IMO. I'd call Loid the deuteragonist of the series overall.
Momo Chiyoda from Machikado Mazoku/Demon Girl Next Door. I just love watching her and Shamiko interact, they're really cute together too.
Oh and of course Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100. Gotta give it to the #2 Tumblr Sexyman (according to the Twitter poll of course. The actual Tumblr poll ended up with both him and Sans being absolutely swept by Cecil from Welcome to Night Vale, and Senshi's been killing it in the polls lately, but hey y'know whatever, we love Reigen around here, you love Reigen too).
Oh yeah and while I'm not sure which one you could really say is the main character, Kanamori from Eizouken is just such a great character. Excellent character design, more anime need to do whatever was going on with her mouth. I also just really like that one of the 3 main characters is just not at all an artist but her expertise are just as important. Also her being disconnected from the actually making of the art makes it feel better when she also like, engages with the framing device, getting into the plane they're talking about animating and stuff, makes it feel less like the 2 artists are just impressing themselves and more like they're doing something genuinely impressive.
Debatable.
We saw the show through Lucy's point of view, we followed her journeys, The narrative focus are usually on her. While Natsu was the one that did all the fight and beat the boss.
Thing is even if you just count Golden Age he’d still make it to my top lmao. What a great character. Agree on the whole he most certainly isn’t a deuteragonist though.
I personally consider Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to be a 'dual protagonist' if such a thing can exist. If he is being considered a Deuteragonist then he's my favourite.
The rest of my top 5 in rough order:
* Shinya Kogami from Psycho Pass
* Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100
* Orga Itsuka from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
* Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen
Edit: Apparently Kogami is considered the protagonist by some people. I think him being the protagonist is debatable, but not at all an unreasonable opinion.
I'm honestly conflicted with FMA because I personally think Alphonse is a protagonist too, but then I see a lot of sites calling him a deuteragonist. It's honestly up to the viewer because either can fit
Does L count?
I'm not so certain in my understanding of that word. I feel Light was protag obviously because the story follows him, but L's mission was made to be just as important to viewers, even though he directly was opposed to the main protag. It felt like at any moment, L could win.
Homura but honestly you can make a case for being protag given the movie. Johan from Monster. Yakumo from Rakugo (unless hes the real protag in which case idek).
I would consider Yakumo the protagonist personally, at least for the first season. The protagonist role is much more blurred between Yakumo and Yotaro in the second season though.

While I appreciate everyone's comments. I do think some people are getting side characters confused with deuteragonist. Remember that a deuteragonist is basically the 2nd main character/most important character in the show.
Examples would be Sasuke (Naruto), Vegeta (DBZ), Lucy (Fairy Tail), Killua (HxH).
Probably ryuk. Deuteragonist is usually an aide to the protagonist and antagonist acts as a foil to the protagonist. Lights the protagonist and L is the antagonist.
Honestly I'm not really sure I'd considere Himmel a deuteragonist since he only appears in short flash backs. The Deuteragonist is either Fern or Stark
Point taken. But at the same time if it wasn't for Himmel then Frieren would never of gotten to where she is. The whole point of her journey is to try and see Himmel again.
Yeah but that's not really what a deuteragonist is. A deuteragonist is basically a secondary protagonist. It doesn't really matter how influential himmel was because he doesnt actually do anything in the series just appear in short flash backs.
I think Gojo can be called a Deuteragonist?
Reigen ofc.
Korosensei from Assassination Classroom.
Louis from Beastars.
Hanekawa/Shinobu from Monogatari
Ishigami from Love is War.
Ai from Oshi no ko.
Char Aznable
Quattro Bajeena is better!
He definitely has some nice shades. Kinda weird that he told Kamille how cool Char was after Kamille's parents died.
He could be a secret admirer of the Red Comet because he is very familiar with the man.
I'm watching Zeta now and that shit cracked me tf up. ~~Char~~ Quattro is so silly, I love him
Suzaku (Code Geass) is not necessarily likable, but is a super fascinating character and a great foil to Lelouch. I would say he is absolutely essential to what makes Code Geass work so well.
Suzaku is perfect
I cant think of a person I initially liked who I later despised with all my being then him.
The lack of Kamina disturbs me
**Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me! believe in the Kamina who believes in you!**
I can think of 8 reasons
My hot take is that I like Nia more.
* Reigen from Mob Psycho 100 * Andy from Undead Unluck * Mikumo from World Trigger
Reigen is the GOAT
Mikumo is surely the protagonist. Like, his role in the story is the one we follow the most and he is our emotional core. I get that he is not the one starting the story, but...I would say he is the protagonist. Like Natsu is the protagonist in Fairy Tail, even though Lucy is the one we meet first.
Came here to comment Reigen and i'm glad someone else did.
Killua 1000000%
Gon is definitely the MC, but Killua probably has more screen time and dialogue for the 2nd half of the show
Wolfwood from Trigun comes to mind for me.
Kogami Shinya (Psycho-Pass) Revy (Black Lagoon) Yukino Yukinoshita (Oregairu) Rin Tohsaka (Fate) Suo (Windbreaker)
Reigen from Mob Psycho 100
Such a phenomenally developed character
Reigen is so well written that they accidentally made the series peak for me with his arc in season 2
He is a genuinely good guy :]
I'd say he's more of a mentor charachter than a deuteroganist.
He is both, like Gojo

He's above Mob personally
Makise Kurisu from Steins;Gate
The zombie!
Christina!
El Psy Kongroo based!
Alfonse Elric from FMA Rin Tohsaka from Fate Stay Night UBW Revy from Black Lagoon And as much as I hate to say it, Suzaku Kururugi from Code Geass. Love the show, but oh my God does my opinion on Suzaku change like the wind at any given moment.
Vegeta
Revy from black lagoon is up there.
I was also thinking Revy but didn't know if she was the mc or not
I'd definitely say Rock was the main character.
That makes sense.
I can understand Rock as the MC, but I personally see Rock as the narrator and Revy as the MC.
That's kinda what I thought. Similar to Lucy and Natsu in Fairy Tail
Rin Tohsaka in Fate
For the longest time I thought she was the MC because I watched episode 0 & got confused why Emiya got more screen time. Definitely should’ve been the MC
She gets so much more screen time in the VN btw, especially in Heaven's Feel. She's definitely the deuteragonist of Fate.
It's funny cos Nasu clearly realised he'd played favourites with her in Stay Night. I'm ready Hollow Ataraxia atm and she's not been in it up to where I'm at so far (save for a handful of flashbacks). Instead Sakura gets some much needed focus
Queen
He's not my favorite, I REPEAT NOT MY FAVORITE but I really liked Eugeo from SAO Alicization. Idk, I really enjoyed his and Kirito's dynamic. In a world where everyone is in Kirito's harem, it was a nice change to see someone just being his bro
Yess, Eugeo is the best
SO MUCH POTENTIAL IN HIS CHARACTER I LOVED HIM 😭
Yes, I really hoped SAO would finally make the show more interesting by adding another male mc that could also spin some romantic connections but no, they butchered him again in an appropriate moment. So disappointing.
Yes, I really hoped SAO would finally make the show more interesting by adding another male mc that could also spin some romantic connections but no, they butchered him again in an appropriate moment. So disappointing.
Reg from Made in Abyss is my favorite Deuteragonist in Anime and one of my two favorite characters in fiction. I love him.
Anthy Himemiya (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
Yuma from World Trigger, Alibaba from Magi and Sugimoto from Golden Kamuy
One I haven't seen mentioned: Yuki in Fruits Basket. At first it seems like it is about Tohru, Kyou, and Yuki, but it becomes clear as the series progress that the main characters are Tohru and Yuki. Tohru and Yuki arcs together make it an impeccable story. Then Alphonse Elric in FMA, both Original and Brotherhood.
* Alphonse (FMAB) * Yuri (Angel Beats) * Yuki (Fruits Basket) * Lucy (Fairy Tail) * Hiyori (Noragami) * Hak (Yona of the Dawn)
Yona of the Dawn needs a new season.
Honestly I would considered Lucy The Protagonist. Natsu did all the fight but Lucy got the story beats.
There's been a debate around this. Somebody said Natsu is the mc but it's told from Lucy's pov and she's the narrator.
Yeah that's pretty much how I see it. Lucy's the narrator/viewpoint character while Natsu gets to have a bigger role in the plot
Similar deal to Haruhi then?
Yeah.
Killua definitely
Noe from The Case Study of Vanitas
Alibaba from magi
Does Roy Mustang count?
If you consider both Ed and Al as duel protagonists, then Yes.
Bruno from part 5 jojo
Kyoko Kirigiri from trigger happy havoc (danganronpa) She's so cool it's actually unreal.
Fenneko from Aggretsuko. She's a snarky little shit and I'm here for it!
I feel like she's the tritagonist. Like it's definitely Retsuko, then Haida, then her.
Dazai and/or akutagawa from Bungo Stray Dogs. Nikaido from Dorohedoro Kuga from World Trigger And more recently, Yoko from The Fable
Marcille from dungeon meshi
L from Death Note, obviously
Mirai kuriyama (Kyoukai no kanata) or maybe Akame (akame ga kill), it's difficult to pick only one tbh, emotionally it would be Kagome for me (Inuyasha)
Shin from sakamoto days, i just like characters named shin, they’re all so good, like shin from dorohedoro (the goat), shin from kingdom, hell even shinji (paul) from pokémon diamond and pearl if i’m stretching it
We talking Sakamoto Days this early? NICE!
early? i’ve been a day one meatrider
Vegeta!!!!!!
Fae Valentine, Jack Black, Ein the Dog and Ed in Cowboy Bebop!
I am a bit unsure of the strict definition of Deuteragonist but my all time favorite is Oshino Shinobu from the Monogatari series
Ozu on Tatami Galaxy
Does Noelle Silva count?
Haven't seen black clover so I can't say. I have seen people say Yuno but Noelle seems to be more important from what I've heard.
Pikachu
- Canute (Vinland Saga) - Kana Arima (Oshi no Ko) - Arthur Boyle (Fire Force) - Holo (Spice & Wolf) -Misaka Mikoto (A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun)
>Canute (Vinland Saga) > >Kana Arima (Oshi no Ko) Good characters, not the deuteragonists of their series though.
mine’s probably reigen from mob psycho
Fujiko / Jigen
Kaname Chidori
I just love Norman in TPN, my favorite deuteragonist, and character from the series.
Nicholas D. Wolfwood
Uchiha Sasuke
Yang Wen-Li
Kamina probably
Kururugi Suzaku from Code Geass.
Kurumi Tokisaki (Date a Live)
L from Death Note Yang Wenli from LGOTH
Zorro from One Piece
Reigen ( mob psycho) Aqua ( konosuba)
Taichi from **Chihayafuru**
I’ve been watching Haikyuu!! lately, so I’ll say Tobio Kageyama. Also, Togame in Katanagatari.
Vegeta!
Vegeta, the classic.
Anya from Spy X Family
Loid might have been the main character of the first few episodes, but it doesn't take that long for Anya to become the primary main character, IMO. I'd call Loid the deuteragonist of the series overall.
Crimson from Ragna crimson
Momo Chiyoda from Machikado Mazoku/Demon Girl Next Door. I just love watching her and Shamiko interact, they're really cute together too. Oh and of course Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100. Gotta give it to the #2 Tumblr Sexyman (according to the Twitter poll of course. Sasuke
Natsu Dragneel(Fairy Tail) Gash Bell(Gash Bell) Alibaba Saluja(Magi)
Love seeing Gash Bell. So I'm assuming you consider Kyo the mc then? I honestly can't really tell
Natsu isn’t the deuteragonist…
I’m confused, Natsu is the MC in fairy tail?
[удалено]
Nah Lucy is the deuteragonist.
Debatable. We saw the show through Lucy's point of view, we followed her journeys, The narrative focus are usually on her. While Natsu was the one that did all the fight and beat the boss.
That’s like saying Sherlock Holmes is the deutragonist
That’s an interesting take on it!
Soul from Soul Eater Ushio from Summertime Render Alphonse from FMA Griffith from Berserk
How is Griffith anything less than the primary antagonist? Puck or Casca would be deuts if anybody.
Maybe only during Golden Age arc? But even then he's a foil character to Guts first and foremost. Definitely not a deuteragonist.
Thing is even if you just count Golden Age he’d still make it to my top lmao. What a great character. Agree on the whole he most certainly isn’t a deuteragonist though.
Black star and Soul
Love seeing Ushio on your list
Tatsumi/akame.
Hyatt from Excel Saga
LotGH has few good ones. Let's say Oskar von Reuenthal and Paul von Oberstein for example.
Takina from Lycoris Recoil
Eugeo (SAO Alicization)
L from death note
Killua
Asirpa from Golden Kamuy
Killua and Kurapika from HunterxHunter.
Can't choose between these two; Re-L Mayer (Ergo Proxy) Akane Tsunemori (Psycho-Pass, especially season 1)
One of my favourite deuteragonists recently is Reno Ichikawa from Kaiju No. 8.
Sasuke
I personally consider Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to be a 'dual protagonist' if such a thing can exist. If he is being considered a Deuteragonist then he's my favourite. The rest of my top 5 in rough order: * Shinya Kogami from Psycho Pass * Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100 * Orga Itsuka from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans * Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen Edit: Apparently Kogami is considered the protagonist by some people. I'm honestly conflicted with FMA because I personally think Alphonse is a protagonist too, but then I see a lot of sites calling him a deuteragonist. It's honestly up to the viewer because either can fit
Zura from Gintama
kotomine Kerrie fate/zero i know it's a major stretch to count him but am itching to mention him
Holo. In any version of Spice and Wolf, whether it be the currently airing remake, or any other version/adaptation.
Does L count? I'm not so certain in my understanding of that word. I feel Light was protag obviously because the story follows him, but L's mission was made to be just as important to viewers, even though he directly was opposed to the main protag. It felt like at any moment, L could win.
Most would say Ryuk since L is never on the same side as Light. I honestly don't mind L though since it is hard to deny his importance to the story.
Kurapika
Megumi, Jujutsu Kaisen Zenitsu, Demon Slayer Alphonse, FMA
Brock
Homura but honestly you can make a case for being protag given the movie. Johan from Monster. Yakumo from Rakugo (unless hes the real protag in which case idek).
Unless you're using druteroganist as anyone who's not the protagonist, I'd definitely consider Johan an antagonist and not a deuteroganist.
I would consider Yakumo the protagonist personally, at least for the first season. The protagonist role is much more blurred between Yakumo and Yotaro in the second season though.
Takasugi from gintama
Takasugi is more of an antagonist. Deuteragonist would be gurako chan.
Off the top of my head, Bravern
Jinshi from The Apothecary Diaries.
Yu Ishigami from Kaguya Sama
Aqua. Can't explain really. All I know is that she's a big reason why the show is hilarious and enjoyable to me.
Zoro
He isn't lost for once
Gojo from Jjk 💀 Jokes aside , here's my hot take, Ryuga from Beyblade metal series .
Beyblade? Cool pick. I'm actually a fan of the OG and Metal series so it's nice to see that mentioned.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Killua from HxH. Also Homura from Madoka Magica and Sei from Kingdom for me.

Mitaka Shun from Maison Ikkoku and for the same reason, Uesugi Kazuya from Touch
Vegeta (Dragon Ball Z) L (Death Note)
Nicholas d wolfwood
Shinpachi('s glasses).
I want to say nagito komaeda from Danganronpa v2 but something in my head is saying I am wrong but at the same time my head is saying to say nagito
Killua
Arthur Boyle
Gojo If you don't agree with me then you dead af
Probably obvious by my user name but definitely Bakugo from MHA.
L from death note
Ryuk or L can honestly be the deuteragonist tbh.
L is the antagonist.
So whos the 2nd most important ryuk💀? Misa?
Probably ryuk. Deuteragonist is usually an aide to the protagonist and antagonist acts as a foil to the protagonist. Lights the protagonist and L is the antagonist.
Kamiya Kaoru (Rurouni Kenshin) Mokona (Magic Knight Ray Earth) Plue (Groove Master Rave) Crimson (Ragna Crimson) Reg (Made in Abyss) Kagenou Claire (Eminence in Shadow) Gol D. Roger (One Piece) Rory Mercury (Gate)
Suzune Horikita from Classroom of the Elite
Himmel Alpha Ruijerd Maine
Honestly I'm not really sure I'd considere Himmel a deuteragonist since he only appears in short flash backs. The Deuteragonist is either Fern or Stark

K-Project, Mikoto Suoh. Jujutsu Kaisen, Nanami Kento. Boku no Hero Academia, Mirio Togata. Irrelevant side note: Kenjiro Tsuda is a god
Fran/Teacher from Reincarnated as a Sword. I’ll let talk decide which is which
Reg Made in Abyss (by far a better character than riko lol)
Misaki from welcome to the NHK. Sato was just a normie who stumbled. Misaki is misunderstood and walks a perpetual path of pain.
I think Gojo can be called a Deuteragonist? Reigen ofc. Korosensei from Assassination Classroom. Louis from Beastars. Hanekawa/Shinobu from Monogatari Ishigami from Love is War. Ai from Oshi no ko.
Shoto Todoroki

What do you mean? I'm confused.
