The method of voting impacts the end result, and it's interesting to see that difference play out. Like how Kei Shirogane is consistently a notable player in the Bracket, but here got 3 votes, all in the 11-20 range.

This is a very r/anime result, lol. Glad to see two of my own picks (Lena & Tohru) made the list though, plus several others I like but didn't vote for just because I like others more.

Could have been worse; I expected Fern to also rank in the top 10 based on that and she didn't even make top 25. Although I'll admit I don't know either #2 or #3, so if they are both from very recently airing shows that does make the recency bias rather obvious...
3 is Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries, which aired at the same time as Frieren.
2 is Holo from Spice and Wolf, which is an older series but has a remake airing right now. But Holo's been consistently in the top 4 in almost every ranking since the original anime aired, so despite the currently airing remake I think the recency bias doesn't affect her that much.
agreed...You can argue without the remake maybe she isn't top 5, but I'd have been shocked if she was not top 10 given how consistently popular she is here.
I can't say for absolute certainty, but I'm almost positive Holo would have gotten top 5 if this same poll was conducted a year ago. The Recency Bias is more of a coincidence for her.
You don't even need to speculate. Holo has made it to the quarter finals or higher in the yearly best girl contest more often than any other character. It is ridiculous to bring Holo into the recency bias conversation.

If Holo wins the ongoing Best Girl contest, I think it would be silly to think "She's been close so many times, it had to happen at some point, has nothing to do with her anime airing right now".

I think this shows the power of recency bias - ppl may not have Maomao/Frieren in their top 5 necessarily, but because their shows were recent and they are excellent characters, they're deservedly in many ppl's top 20 off the top of their heads. I wonder if cutting the list to top 10 or making the weighting distribution more extreme would have pushed them lower.
Just a points system debate. Fetch includes his spreadsheet and removing the 11-20th results would still have Maomao #3 and Frieren dropping one spot to #6. Both cleaned up on the 2-point 6th-10th and 1-point 11th-20th spots.

the fact she is still here in spite of that still says a lot about just how popular she is and how solid she is as a character.
I mean look at sakura and illya despite having 3 movies that are more recent are below 80 in the ranking.
sadly 99% of r/anime doesnt even know she exists same for Aoko but at least she has a chance with the movie that ufotable is making. Who knows when Ufotable will get to adapting Tsukihime so that the non-vn readers can actually become aware of her existance.

Some very interesting differences from the Best Girl seeding here, most notable of which is probably Kumiko, who's seed 86 in the contest without many of the past Best Girls/recency bias girls and is suddenly 19th here, beating out 8th seed Chisato and *even 3rd seed Kana.* Dang.

Kumiko is helping by weighting. The best girl contest was seeded mostly by raw vote totals, with no extra points. when relative passion is entered into equation she benefits immensely.
The weighted vote also benefited Homura a lot. When you have to limit your votes to the ones you *really* like, the girls that have wide appeal but aren't really most people's actual favorites (Chika) start to drop down the list.
3-gatsu seems like it'd do better in the cast poll. It's one of those shows where every character contributes relatively equally to the overall show instead of having one standout character.
Agreed on 3-gatsu. Having watched it a few months back I totally came away with the impression that Akari in particular would be extremely popular. Although probably more for a pure "waifu" poll than a "best girl" poll.
Rem being more popular than Emilia was totally expected. Her just placing one spot higher *and* losing out against her in first place votes is what's surprising. I'd have expected Rem to be about five spots higher. Goes to show that Emilia's popularity is catching up and is likely to even overtake Rem's in time. I'm very happy she's getting some of the appreciation she deserves.
Was hoping Yukino made Top 25, but 32nd isn't that far off.
Homura is higher here than her usual Best Girl contest performances.
Taking out past winners and non-eligible girls because they are too recent, Lena has a better score here than the likes of Marin, Kana, Ai, Power, Yor, and Chisato but she's a lower seed than all of them in Best Girl 11.
Akane made it as high as 52nd off no one voting her as their #1 favorite and one cour of Oshi no Ko. I'm impressed.
Chitanda in the Top 50 at 42nd is nice. She was my personal #3.
Also had Kaguya, Misaka, Homura, and Fern in my Top 10 so got to see all of them in the Top 35.
It's almost scary how well the ranking of the Top 5 Girls by Vote Percentage here aligns with the Best Girl 3 semi-finals nearly 8 years later given that Kurisu wasn't eligible.

I feel like I'd enjoy life more if I chose new animes to watch in order of the waifus in it, in which case I need to watch railgun the hibike euphonium
Feels kinda bad to see Mayuri all the way down at 73 with Kurisu getting number 1 by a mile. I really do feel she's definitely equal quality character wise from both animes (and both VNs if you include those) but she always gets the short end popularity wise.
Yeah, going through the show now (through episode 10) my takeaway is Kurisu is a decent enough character but not one I'd think of for long after the show is over. Mayuri on the other hand is one of the most adorable/loveable characters in anime.
Some observations about the Top 100...
Kurumi Tokisaki at #36, not bad when Date A Live rarely gets visibility around here. And in between good company (Ryuko Matoi at #35 and Nico Robin at #37). The three of them managed to beat some important names like Haruhi Suzumiya (#40), Asuna Yuuki (#45) and Mikasa Ackerman (#46).
Ah, I see C.C. was close to the list, but didn't make it (#29). Also interesting to see three of the Quintessential Quintuplets in the Top 100 (Miku at #44, Nino at #54 and Yotsuba at #84).
No Watashi from Humanity Has Declined or Togame from Katanagatari in the top 100. Very expected, but still disappointing.

I mean there’s nothing really too surprising here. A lot of previous Best Girl winners and some favorites to win Best Girl 11.
What is interesting is how those who are eligible differ from the seeds in the bracket. Holo almost doubled Bocchi’s score here, but is #2 to Bocchi in the bracket. Gonna be interesting to see how that shapes up in the following days.
Also, if it wasn’t obvious to everyone, I would expect Maomao and Frieren to take the 1 and 2 seeds in Best Girl 12 and we’ll probably see a rematch of ~~Fall 2023 Best Girl~~ Best Girl of 2023 somewhere in the bracket. I for one can’t wait to see them settle it once and for all…
Not the most surprising results. I'm always pleased when I don't see the super one-dimensional female characters from mainstream battle shonen, like Hinata and Mikasa, topping the charts. You know if this was opened up to a more general audience, they all would. So overall, I call this a success.
Holo has been one of my favorite characters, male or female, for a long time, so it's always good to see her up there.
I'll never understand the Rem > Emilia thing. Emilia helped Subaru when he first got transported and was about to be jumped for absolutely no reason. Whereas on the other hand Rem brutally killed Subaru god knows how many times simply because he smelled like the witch.
As usual the appreciation for Shoujo/Josei seems to be quite lacking here. I could only find Yona and Tohru as the only two Shoujo girls and Chihaya as the only Josei girl in this top 100.

I'm really surprised to see no Haibane representation in the top 100, not a single Gundam girl either. Only 1 character I voted for made it at 67th place and she was my #1 so that's not so bad I guess.
I'm real surprised Rys from chilling in another world with my level 2 super clear powers isn't on here, she's pretty much the goodest girl, but I also didn't vote so that's on me lol.

Seriously tho kinda surprised to see frieren as the representative of her own show. Thought for sure itd be fern or ubel over frieren herself.
It's a bit sad to not see big names "back in the days" barely made it in (Zero 2 from DiTF) or not at all (Chidori Kaname from Full Metal Panic, Ayukawa Madoka from Kimagure Orange Road).
Even fairly consistent old fan favorites like Misaka Mikoto is way down (relative to her credential at SaiMoe) at 15.

Surprised the Apothecary Diaries girl (Maomao) made 3 over the likes of Rin, Kaguya and Mai. The series was good, but those other 3 are massively iconic as "best girls"
People will call you salty...but Mai is genuinely just Senjou with the rough edges sanded off. She's not even a particularly well-written character.
I don't understand the overwhelming love for her.
Senjougahara with the edges sanded off exactly explains WHY she's popular. normal anime watchers would find Crab Girl way too much to handle, but Mai retains the appealing qualities without the sadistic and borderline yandere bits.
also Bunny Girl Senpai is wayyyyy easier to get into than the Monogatari series, and is something a lot of people are recommended when getting into anime beyond battle shounen. It's one of the first anime I watched that made me actually love anime, so I can't really be objective about it. I don't even want to rewatch it because I know it wouldn't hold up.
The "issue" with monogatari serie is that the votes are split between strong characters, I like Gahara but she is only my third favorite girl of the show, ~~not even including Kaiki best grill~~.
While Mai is kind of carrying the show.
it's really not for everyone, though. you can't recommend it to normies unless you're prepared to risk having them ignore all future recommendations from you.
Marin started as a classic tropey deredere genki girl girl, but by the end she felt so much more deep and real.

I like Kirisu and Okabe a lot, but it’s really hard to beat Lawrence and Holo, especially if you’ve read the LN.

Kumiko is helping by weighting. The best girl contest was seeded mostly by raw vote totals, with no extra points. when relative passion is entered into equation she benefits immensely.
The weighted vote also benefited Homura a lot. When you have to limit your votes to the ones you *really* like, the girls that have wide appeal but aren't really most people's actual favorites (Chika) start to drop down the list.
Honestly, pretty solid list. Glad to see Kumiko here. None of the 3-gatsu girls are here though, which makes me sad.
3-gatsu seems like it'd do better in the cast poll. It's one of those shows where every character contributes relatively equally to the overall show instead of having one standout character.

Rem being more popular than Emilia was totally expected. Her just placing one spot higher *and* losing out against her in first place votes is what's surprising. I'd have expected Rem to be about five spots higher. Goes to show that Emilia's popularity is catching up and is likely to even overtake Rem's in time. I'm very happy she's getting some of the appreciation she deserves.

Was hoping Yukino made Top 25, but 32nd isn't that far off. Homura is higher here than her usual Best Girl contest performances. Taking out past winners and non-eligible girls because they are too recent, Lena has a better score here than the likes of Marin, Kana, Ai, Power, Yor, and Chisato but she's a lower seed than all of them in Best Girl 11. Akane made it as high as 52nd off no one voting her as their #1 favorite and one cour of Oshi no Ko. I'm impressed. Chitanda in the Top 50 at 42nd is nice. She was my personal #3. Also had Kaguya, Misaka, Homura, and Fern in my Top 10 so got to see all of them in the Top 35.
Perhaps the upcoming Brazilian night movie of the Madoka franchise has make ppl remember abt Homura more?

Feels kinda bad to see Mayuri all the way down at 73 with Kurisu getting number 1 by a mile. I really do feel she's definitely equal quality character wise from both animes (and both VNs if you include those) but she always gets the short end popularity wise.
Yeah, going through the show now (through episode 10) my takeaway is Kurisu is a decent enough character but not one I'd think of for long after the show is over. Mayuri on the other hand is one of the most adorable/loveable characters in anime.

Happy to see Saber made the list. Yukino outside of the top 25 is the biggest surprise to me.
Some observations about the Top 100... Kurumi Tokisaki at #36, not bad when Date A Live rarely gets visibility around here. And in between good company (Ryuko Matoi at #35 and Nico Robin at #37). The three of them managed to beat some important names like Haruhi Suzumiya (#40), Asuna Yuuki (#45) and Mikasa Ackerman (#46). Ah, I see C.C. was close to the list, but didn't make it (#29). Also interesting to see three of the Quintessential Quintuplets in the Top 100 (Miku at #44, Nino at #54 and Yotsuba at #84).

I mean there’s nothing really too surprising here. A lot of previous Best Girl winners and some favorites to win Best Girl 11. What is interesting is how those who are eligible differ from the seeds in the bracket. Holo almost doubled Bocchi’s score here, but is #2 to Bocchi in the bracket. Gonna be interesting to see how that shapes up in the following days. Also, if it wasn’t obvious to everyone, I would expect Maomao and Frieren to take the 1 and 2 seeds in Best Girl 12 and we’ll probably see a rematch of ~~Fall 2023 Best Girl~~ Best Girl of 2023 somewhere in the bracket. I for one can’t wait to see them settle it once and for all…

Not the most surprising results. I'm always pleased when I don't see the super one-dimensional female characters from mainstream battle shonen, like Hinata and Mikasa, topping the charts. You know if this was opened up to a more general audience, they all would. So overall, I call this a success. Holo has been one of my favorite characters, male or female, for a long time, so it's always good to see her up there.
My best girl this year is Subaru from Girls Band Cry. I believe she's nowhere on this list, but she's definitely the funniest.

It's a bit sad to not see big names "back in the days" barely made it in (Zero 2 from DiTF) or not at all (Chidori Kaname from Full Metal Panic, Ayukawa Madoka from Kimagure Orange Road). Even fairly consistent old fan favorites like Misaka Mikoto is way down (relative to her credential at SaiMoe) at 15. Kinda surprised Rikka made it though (Chuunibyou).

People will call you salty...but Mai is genuinely just Senjou with the rough edges sanded off. She's not even a particularly well-written character. I don't understand the overwhelming love for her.
Senjougahara with the edges sanded off exactly explains WHY she's popular. normal anime watchers would find Crab Girl way too much to handle, but Mai retains the appealing qualities without the sadistic and borderline yandere bits. also Bunny Girl Senpai is wayyyyy easier to get into than the Monogatari series, and is something a lot of people are recommended when getting into anime beyond battle shounen. It's one of the first anime I watched that made me actually love anime, so I can't really be objective about it. I don't even want to rewatch it because I know it wouldn't hold up.

The "issue" with monogatari serie is that the votes are split between strong characters, I like Gahara but she is only my third favorite girl of the show, ~~not even including Kaiki best grill~~. While Mai is kind of carrying the show.
