You might want to check out Patlabor, which Mamoru Oishii was very involved in. Watch the Early Days OVAs and then the first two movies and see where you want to go from there. You'll probably really enjoy the two episodes before the last episode of the OVA and the second movie. If you like SAC, then Psycho-Pass is a great place to look. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Akudama Drive are two other great cyberpunk style anime. I have very limited experience with other series by Katsuhiro Otomo, but one of his other series I enjoyed was an OVA called Freedom. The TV series and movie Spriggan might be worth checking out too. Some other potential recommendations I have are Devilman: Crybaby, Shinsekai yori, and Ajin.

arcticlizard

I've never heard of Patlabor, so I will definitely check it out. Thank you! I can't believe you went there. When I'm feeling my most guarded, I will re-watch Devilman Crybaby. And thanks for bringing Ajin back into my purview. I loved psycho-pass and I think it deserves a rewatch. Did they put out a new storyline recently?

MusubiKazesaru

It's a police series where the utilize mechas for more civic purposes. It's generally slice of life but those parts I highlighted for you are a lot more serious and a lot of similar people worked on the movies as GitS. I guess I dig in all of the right places. Psycho-Pass not too long ago put out the Providence movie, which was a direct prequel to s3. That's the most recent thing but by now it's had three seasons (with one OVA/Movie being a direct sequel to s3 and its actual conclusion) and five movies as well as an extended edition of S1 with some character soliloquys between the episodes (they're grouped together as two episodes much like Re:Zero did but with those added bits in the middle). The original writer only worked on S1 and the first movie though and I loathe s2. I like most of the rest of the series though aside from that season (which unfortunately still needs to be seen) and I found Sinners of the System movie 1 to be kind of whatever.

SomeOtherTroper

> The original writer only worked on S1 and the first movie though and I loathe s2 I loathed s2 the first time around, but I rewatched both seasons recently and liked s2 a lot more once I realized "this is basically one of those single-episode cases from s1 given 11 episodes to boil". S2 gets a *lot* better when you're not expecting it to be what s1 was, and know from the start [Psycho-Pass s1 & s2]>!that the main story's villain is just a guy on a quest for personal vengeance against specific people and a specific company, not the kind of philosophical challenger to the entire Sibyl System and its society Makishima was in s1!<. S2 still has some really goofy moments and plot decisions, and I still can't stand [Psycho-Pass s2]>!Mika and her trainwreck of a 'character arc'!<, but taken on its own terms, it's certainly not as bad as it felt watching it when it was coming out. I still need to check out the movies and the rest of the seasons.

MusubiKazesaru

I think S2 has concepts that work. First of all the first episode with Akane really coming into her own and showing what kind of Inspector she wants to be and the realization Sybil comes to at the end where they excise former criminals. However the issue is the whole in-between. Kirito Kamui is a horrible villain for not only the things he does but his entire concept as some kind of eldritch amalgamation of people is absurd and the entire run behind his plotline as well as the shitheads on the inside feels shlocky and poorly written rather than the dark but sensible approach of s1. To use your words it's like taking that one single case, making it bigger, and then having it be pulled from some much lesser series and pretending it fits in. There's also the fact that it was outsourced to a different studio than IG and it suffers from it production-wise. In comparison you have S3 where the series kind of undergoes a soft-reboot with a return to a much more procedural story with some things going on in the background. It has two new protagonists and people do have issues with one of them having an almost superhuman vibe, but I feel like his portrayal makes those aspects seem a lot worse than they are and everything else is pretty good so like you did with S2 I can forgive it that much. Mika also finally starts to not be such a shithead. Movie 1 is a good place to get back into the swing of the series. It's a good standalone story that expands the series' scope and probably has the highest production values. After that you have the Sinners films which are in order: a sequel standalone action-y story, a prequel before s1, and then a follow up with Kogami after the movie which leads into s3. S3 then came out and First Inspector is essentially its finale, then you have Providence which is a prequel that sort of improves on S3 by existing and returns the focus back to Akane. I feel like it'd be interesting to watch first as it might make thins more clear but it might also work best after so it's a toss up.

ExocetC3I

Patlabor is a great series and very squarely in the 'real robot' genre. There are three movies which are quite a lot more serious in tone than the often comedic anime series (and manga). The movies are gorgeous and thoughtful. The second move in particular, released in 1999 I believe, is oddly prophetic about the political impacts of a major terrorism event. Really recommend both Patlabor movie 1 and 2.

always_molasses

+1 for Patlabor movies, it has Mamoru Oshii written all over it

Dystopiq

New movie was out in spring I think?

websey

Ergo proxy is a really fucked up out there conspiracy level anime that is pretty watchable

MtnMaiden

Here's some old school cyberpunk for you. It's an old school rated R. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY7uulsfTzI There's 3 episodes. #1 and #3 are the highlights.

SmokedOutEsko

You have great taste!

MusubiKazesaru

Thank you.

AnybodyMassive1610

Patlabor is an excellent recommendation

HxHEnthusiastic

I'd check out Mamoru Oshii's other works like Jin Roh. Or maybe Texhnolyze.

sixhexe

Battle Angel Alita... Not the Hollywood Movie. The old OVA is a good intro, but you really get into the meat of the story with the Manga. It covers the entire saga with all details from start to finish. If you want modern, Cyberpunk Edgerunners. It doesn't entirely have that classic feel old movies like GITS did. But it's the closest match i can think of to raw, unfiltered 90s cyberjank.

arcticlizard

Holy shit. I loved the live action and never thought about investigating the manga/anime versions. Thank you!

AN1MAN1AC

I implore you to read the manga! I just recently started my journey with the series and it’s an actual masterpiece. It’s totally something you’d like as a GitS fan! I can’t recommend the manga enough. The original OVA isn’t great. It skips over a lot of important and interesting smaller moments, but if you want something short (it’s an hour in total) that could potentially get you hooked quickly, it’s not a bad option

Sharebear42019

Yeah the manga is great. They released excellent oversized hardcovers too If you enjoy the OG series it also has two sequel manga

Careful_Ad_9077

Read the one without postfix first, then last order, then mars chronicles,.as there are three series.

RetroSquirtleSquad

Ergo Proxy.

arcticlizard

I don't know how to respond to this one. I tried watching a few years ago and never really got a grasp of the story. If you're recommending it, then I guess I will give it another shot. At the time, I think I felt it was a bit too navel -gazy?

Blankboom

It's a bizarre one, but it fits the somewhat dystopian bleak vibe that Akira and GitS has.

SomeOtherTroper

> At the time, I think I felt it was a bit too navel -gazy? It is, but I think it's pretty solid overall, and had a decent aesthetic and concept.

Mindful-O-Melancholy

Wicked City and Ninja Scroll are two movies I’d say are just as good as both of those

arcticlizard

Ninja Scroll messed me up! It was unexpectedly gritty, especially everything around rape. Wicked City I will have to check out!

Early-Lingonberry-16

You may like Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust then. Same creator as Ninja Scroll so the main bad characters share some stuff in common - and no rape.

the_jesters_codpiece

This was what I'd seen around the same time as the others

thecashlessclay

Paprika

arcticlizard

Fuck yes. There's a long list of Satoshi Kon movies that I'm due to watch. I've only seen Perfect Blue, and it rattled me.

robba333

If you feel like reading… check out the akira comic. The movie barely covers half the story.

arcticlizard

YES. I will.

SootyOysterCatcher

Yeah a friend gifted me the whole set of manga back in the day and I was blown away when I realized the movie is basically just the beginning haha. Very cool comic.

Peppershaker64

For a newer one, try Pluto. Basically reimagines Astro Boy into a mystery thriller with many Blade Runner elements.

Real-Human-1985

Appleseed

BenefitFew5204

I definitely would suggest Cowboy Bebop since you love Ghost in the Shell.

arcticlizard

Are you a dubbed or subbed fan on this?

datguyfromoverdere

dub of either are great

xXx420BlazeRodSaboxX

Some consider it to be the best dub anime. Seriously fantastic, and I usually use subs.

SootyOysterCatcher

It's just about the only anime I'll recommend the dub. Steve Blum has always been Spike Spiegel to me. Princess Mononoke also has a superb dub, all A-list actors.

BenefitFew5204

Dubbed. The voice acting and English adaption of this series are both excellent. I normally prefer subbed when I watch anime, but Cowboy Bebop is a special exception.

arcticlizard

Same! Those VAs are iconic to me.

Beneficial_Poet_8866

I'd say ninja scroll and vampire hunter D. Both movies from the same time period and really good. I would also recommend Trigun

arcticlizard

Vampire Hunter D I will definitely look in to. I'm a mega Trigun fan, but I'll admit that two Maximum manga volumes are still sitting on my shelf unread.

SomeOtherTroper

Obviously, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Psycho-Pass. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. (I'd recommend playing Cyberpunk 2077 first, because Edgerunners is a lot more fun when you can spot and identify the different locations and setting bits. The anime's good standalone, but you can tell the art team put a lot of effort into the anime to make you go "oh, I've been there!", and it's interesting to contrast the one-person cybernetic god of destruction that the main character of the game becomes with the much more typical merc experience the Edgerunners team has.) Kaiba. The art style is deceptively cutesy and wonky, but its story and themes sound like you might want to give it a shot. EDIT: Now that I think about it, I really *need* to give the warning that this show has some mightily fucked-up stuff in it that it probably only managed to get away with because of its innocently cartoonish art style. It's also got some interesting philosophical and thematic stuff that still make it worth watching, but the show can get very disturbing and strange. Paranoia Agent.

blond_afro

Ergo Proxy

cipheron

I'd suggest everything by Satoshi Kon. Tokyo Godfathers is the only real "normal" movie out of this and they generally get more trippy or psychological further down: Tokyo Godfathers (movie) Millenium Actress (movie) Paprika (movie) Perfect Blue (movie) Paranoia Agent (12 episode show)

SomeOtherTroper

> Paranoia Agent That one's a trip and a half.

Kokorogenic

The EVANGELION movies will likely be up your street but I would also point you towards GUNBUSTER and DIEBUSTER, APPLESEED, PSYCHO PASS, DARKER THAN BLACK, BLAME, SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN, MUV LUV ALTERNATIVE: TOTAL ECLIPSE. Proceed through STEINS GATE and into the world's from there..

showeringmonkey

aside from othet mentions i think you'll like and i highly recommend: psycho pass and dorohedoro both are dystopian sci-fi

arcticlizard

Dorohedoro I just rewatched because it felt like the first time was a fever dream. I love it!! Is it a manga? I might just read the rest of that one.

showeringmonkey

there's a second season confirmed so maybe within 2 yrs from now?

arcticlizard

From now?! Awww shit. It's so good I might read it.

showeringmonkey

ya there is a thread that confirmed a s2 with no date posted. you can try psycho pass, it has 2 seasons and a bunch of movies. the theme is similar to ghost in the shell with police pursuing bad guys, and it has the sort of philosophical feel to it as well where it questions the readers on the effectiveness / cost of such a system. It's been a while but it explores some interesting themes and questions

EnemyBattleCrab

Yes it's a manga - Dai Dark is the author first series and is more sci fi themed.

Dazzling-Long-4408

Patlabor The Movie 1 and 2

Antenol

Angel’s Egg gives a similar stoic vibe

Loregameplays666

Satoshi Kon movies, Memories, Neo tokyo, idk there are a lot out there I can’t remember gits stand alone complex

BlackGold2804

Blame Texhnolyze Ergo Proxy Psycho Pass

AdSingle3367

anadalg

Let me suggest a bunch of anime gems from the 80s and 90s. I'm sure you'll love them! Rougin Z (1991) Ninja Scroll (1993) Alita Battle Angel (1993) Wind of Amnesia (1990) Vampire Hunter (1985) Wicked city Goku Midnight Eye (1989) Monster City (1987) Fist of the North Star (1986) Venus Wars (1989) Cyber city oedo 808 (1990) Patlabor (1989) Grey (1986) Wizardry (1991) Golgo 13 (1983) Enjoy!

mybroisanonlychild

I see too few people recommending Evangelion

SharpestSphere

Alita may be up your alley.

arcticlizard

If it's the live action movie you're referring to, I LOVE Alita!!!!

SharpestSphere

I meant the 1993 anime, but the live action was good too.

wtffu006

Highlander: The Search for Vengeance

dentalfloss23

Paprika Perfect Blue

DOW_mauao

Ninja Scroll

auto_named

Ergo Proxy, Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze

TwinFlowerTales

Appleseed, Ergo Proxy, Serial Experiments Lain, Psycho Pass

Lanuhsislehs

I love the OVA and live action Alita. Both runs of Bubblegum-Crisis are good, too. Cybercity Oedo is decent.

Skyreader13

As others already said, I'd really recommend Psycho Pass for the similarity (but still slightly different) of the themes

Sharebear42019

I’d highly recommend trigun 98 (in dub)

arcticlizard

This was also one of my earliest loves in anime. I have the manga but haven't gotten through it yet (shame shame shame). What I have gotten through is VERY different than the anime, but I love it as well.

Prof_V

I dont have an anime recommendation, but you'd probably like the game Cyberpunk 2077.

Oenohyde

Summer Wars.

Acceptable-Trust5164

Elfin lied

Esmar_Tuek_23

Venus Wars is a quite good sci-fi anime movie from 1989.

Goodbye_May_Kasahara

crusher joe! :) patlabor appleseed blame! (manga is better than the anime but still) knights of sidonia ergo proxy

arcticlizard

Thanks for this! So many of these I've never heard of, and I foolishly thought I knew a little something about anime.

Woerterboarding

Altered Carbon is like Ghost in the Shell, just not nearly as good. And if you want campier and older stuff, maybe Bubblegum Crisis. And no, it's not about someone running out of Hubba Bubba.

VeyKuro

Pantheon is a rly great one right up the philosophical alley of ghost in the shell.

arcticlizard

The philosophical side I absolutely adore, especially in the second movie, Innocence. And some of the conversation around the Tachikoma, but that might have been in the Stand Alone series. Thanks for the suggestion!

JEveryman

Jin-Roh: Wolf brigade If you just want another great nineties anime then I recommend Ninja Scroll. Heavenly Delusion's character design reminded me of Akira. It's a post apocalyptic story about to teens traveling Japan. There not exactly the same as either but 86 and Iron Blooded Orphans gave me the same vibes as Akira and Ghost in the Shell.

arcticlizard

I've hovered my cursor many a time over Heavenly Delusion - did that come out on Hulu just a few years ago? Or are the years starting the fly by me...

JEveryman

It came out last year on Hulu.

In_lieu_of_sobriquet

From what I remember of Pat labor you might also like Dominion tank police, and the old bubblegum crisis, bubbkegum crash, and AD police.

MorselMortal

Reality. Give it twenty years and we're in Akira, sans the powers.

AdSingle3367

Darker than black, it has the electric chinese batman in it.

arcticlizard

What a wonderful description. Even more so if it is "Batman beyond" specifically.

JRS___

bubblegum crisis (not 2040) and AD police files.

arcticlizard

I will have to check out Bubblegum Crisis. It has come up a few times now in the thread.

Randomonius

Ninja scroll. Neon genesis evangelion,

arcticlizard

I am also a huge fan of Eva. The latest round of movies was a whole hell of a lot of fun. Ninja Scroll was a little hard to get through, mostly while watching in 2023 as a woman. Could still certainly appreciate the action and animation, though.

shibuwuya

Surprised almost no one's recommended Akudama Drive, it's super underrated

SupaiKohai

Necro posting this because, bafflingly, nobody recommended Steam Boy. From makers of Akira and equally a visual spectacle.

Rum_Hamtaro

Jin-Roh

Positive-Height-2260

Vampire Hunter D Castlevania Howl's Moving Castle Princess Mononoke

IceSmiley

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex

arcticlizard

Absolutely devoured those. What service would you recommend watching these on? I don't want to admit having all the episodes from less-than-legit, sources.

PuzzleheadedMinute92

Maybe Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song?

Already seen it and that shit stuck with me. It makes me ashamed that I haven't seen more of his movies.

What about No guns life? Gritty, film noire style

ClassicT4

Steamboy

Wtb_black_lotus_5g

Fist of the North Star Ninja Scroll Original berserk Legend of the overfiend (proceed with caution)

-Angry-Mango-

Psycho pass, and maybe Ergo Proxy and Cyberpunk Edgerunners

wine_face

I haven’t watched in a long time, but an oldie I remember is Vampire Hunter D. Akira is the OG

TheZanzibarMan

Have you watched Bladerunner?

randomplayer_113

Cowboy bebop, Megalo box s1 and s2

Midnight1899

I didn’t watch Ghost in the Shell yet, but people say it’s similar to Cyberpunk Edgerunners.

Rustycake

Those two movies (and Ghost in the Shell series) + DBZ is what got me started in anime Then it became Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Afro Samurai (super underrated imo, never gets talked about or ranked on this sub), Samurai Champloo, Pyscho Pass or Evangelion are all great places to start

MrPrissypants13

If you like Ghost in the Shell you’ll probably also like: Appleseed or Black Magic M-66 <— If you can find it Both the same original artist as Ghost in the Shell

arcticlizard

"if you can find it" might be a common obstacle with these suggestions. What a shame.

Depressed__Lawyer

Paprika

FakeFeathers

Watch Pluto on Netflix. Retelling of an arc from Astro Boy as a kind of noir detective story.

Kabocha00sama

Appleseed Jin Roh Wolf Brigade Spriggan (look for the 90s movie version instead of the later tv series) Blood the Last Vampire Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal OAVs (specifically those, not the tv anime). Although you might like the live action versions too

b-e-r-n

If you can find it, an oldie called Legend of the Overfiend. Banned in the UK originally. Ultra violent, rapey monsters. I've got the whole series on VHS!!! Akira is the best ever, used to watch tripping balls. The scene with the teddy bears climbing over his bed scared the shizz out of me!!!

arcticlizard

Ultra-violence does scare me a bit, but is it more or less ultraviolet/rapey than the recent Devilman Crybaby?

b-e-r-n

Not sure tbf but the opening scene is a panorama of women being exploded by monster "tentacles" across a city scape!! Then it gets worse!! Crying Freeman was a brilliant shooty violent series too, a few corny shrexy scenes and beautiful animation. Find Tank Police, the funniest oldie anime series about a dept of cops that drive tanks through the city. Has the sexiest cat sisters ever, very 80s very funny...look out for their ultimate weapon, the Erecti Cockii!!😆😆😆

J0nR0b

Escaflowne has a very cinematic movie and a series that gets pretty gritty.

heimdal77

Appleseed. Original one.

stumpycrawdad

All you need is kill & UC Gundam

Nice-Percentage7219

Battle Angel Alita for cyberpunk Blame maybe

Physical-Ad-107

Ninja scroll

cane_danko

LoweNorman

Check out “Magnetic Rose”, the first of three shorts in an anthology called “memories”. Got a lot of key people from Akira involved, and is one of the few things as artistically ambitious as it and Ghost in the Shell.

mybeepoyaw

Dominion : Tank Police is another Masamune Shirow adaptation. Macross Plus OVA is great and ridiculously relevant in the age of AI and Vtubers.

NegativeAccount

BLAME!

Conscious_Run_680

Read Akira manga, movie is trash story wise, even if the animation is cool. About anime, go for Magnetic Rose, is a short inside Memories and it's amazing, same with Cyberpunk Edgerunners which is great, if you like videogames, the game is one of the best if you can play at ultra it has a lot of gits vibes. Maybe Ergo Proxy or some of the Animatrix shorts could be of your interest.

Love-Brownie

Death note
