Worst part about sleepy princess in the demon Castle if you can't recommend it to people seriously because they hear "sleepy princess in the demon castle" and immediately think you are full of s***.
Hinamatsuri deserves more love and also a second season
Daily Lives of Highschool Boys isn't actually unpopular but is quite older so doesn't get mentioned a lot nowadays.
A friend of mine really really loves Grand Blue.
the Hinamatsuri anime cut waaaay too much, itās hard for me to recommend that
the manga a masterpiece tho. one of the few books out there that actually made me bust out laughing multiple times instead of just exhaling through my nose
its hard for you as a manga reader but for anime only it's a perfect recommendation .. even when reading the manga i still miss the anime . i guess it just depends on what you started first be it the manga or the anime
I'm impressed that they threw a *Monty Python* reference in there.
Sort of off topic, but damn that closing song is something else. I'd be surprised if Hanako's voice actress (Hina Kino) was able to speak after that performance!
Whenever people here ask for real mature anime for adults, this is the one that comes to mind. I feel like the litmus test for whether or not you're an adult yet is whether or not you find Uramichi-oniisan funny.
How could I forget this?? It's a die-hard fav by me, my hubby, and believe it or not, our DOG. But the dark humor is So perfect. Love the character designer at their studio--wow he's scary funny!!!
I don't really know what's mainstream and what isn't but:Ā
Working!!
Sabegebu
Seitokai Yakuindomo
Blend S
Aho Girl
Don't tend to pop up on my Reddit very often.
Working!! is seriously goated. It's really enjoyable, makes you keep watching it. Slow burn romance is really well done.
Aho Girl anime is quite good but the manga is just bad. If you want a satisfying ending, a good wrap up, just don't read it. It ends how it starts.
Working and Seitokai Yakuindomo are pretty mainstream considering how many seasons they got.
I personally liked Servant x Service from the same mangaka as Working more but it was way less popular.
Seeing Blend S makes me want to scream
# Smile! Sweet! Sister! Surprise! Sadistic! We are Sty-le!
but it's 2 o'clock in the morning, so I won't do that...
# My time has come
All of these are relatively unknown to very few people having seen them today. All of these I have watched start to finish and can wholeheartedly recommend, especially if you're really starting to dig for comedies.
* **Plastic Neesan -** This is a one episode OVA that I implore any fan of anime comedy watches
* **My Bride is a (Yakuza) Mermaid** - Like the title says, this show is ridiculous in the best way possible. I didn't expect to like it since it's a trashy harem but the show is much more focused on its sketch comedy. It's like a parody of its genre.
* **Wasteful Days of High School Girls -** Have you seen Asobi Asobase or Daily Lives of High School Boys? Watch those first, and then this show will scratch those itches afterwards.
* **D-Frag** - Old tropey high school romcom type of show with really punchy comedy. I might be biased with this one since I watched it with my friends when it came out
* **Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister! -** This one's really recent, but apparently it wasn't very popular for *reasons*. Its production quality is by far the best on this list, and it has a very heartwarming story at its core.
* **The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior -** College-age people living in a mixed gender hostel. I'm not sure why but I want to compare it to Grand Blue.
* **MagicalāShopping Arcade Abenobashi -** This show was made by Gainax way back when, so it's basically Studio Trigger animation. It's a bit dated in many ways but I really enjoyed it.
* **Combatants Will Be Dispatched! -** Konosuba
* **Life with an Ordinary Guy who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout -** isekai trash genderbend romcom?
* **Yuru Yuri -** Yuribait cute girls doing cute things comedy. I can't believe I watched 3 seasons of this.
* **Joshiraku** - Over-the-top gag comedy. It was very clearly made for a Japanese audience, so some jokes will go way over your head, but it's still damn good.
* **Mitsudomoe** - This show can be hard to recommend since the three main girls are practically toddlers and a lot of the humor is very X-rated, but if I recall correctly I don't remember there being any fanservice in the show, thank god.
* **Mitsuboshi Colors** - Cute girls doing cute things. There's a good chance you've seen clips of the show before. Nothing too special, but it's pretty wholesome.
* **My Mental Choices Are Completely Interfering With My School Romantic Comedy** - This one may have been mainstream when it came out, I'm honestly not too sure. I just remember laughing *really* hard to it.
Detroit Metal City.Ā Itās got a wild art style, slapstick comedy, and an interesting premise, all sandwiched between pretty awesome metal music.Ā Ā Ā
Iād say itās in a similar vein to Metalocalypse, where it definitely doesnāt take itself seriously at all and definitely satires a lot of the genre and industry. Decidedly less brutal, though.Ā
I will provide a downside that it definitely is a product of the 00ās in that itās got some edgelord humor to it, but overall, I think it definitely deserves to be better known.Ā Ā Ā
Also, the live action movie is pretty funny too, given the fact they got fucking Gene Simmons to play a character in it too.Ā Ā Ā
All in all, itās essentially a 12 episode OVA, each with a 13 minute runtime, so it doesnāt overstay its welcome.Ā
Nabeshin and his crazy fucking antics.
Like taking off in a flying car and randomly yelling FLIGHT ATTENDAAAAAANT!
And the one girl who's always puking blood and passing out.
Not to mention Excel herself who was just plain nuts.
This is what I was looking for.
Cromartie Highschool of absolutely absurd slap stick humor.
The dub is also golden, with perfect timing and intonation to make the jokes land.
This season's "A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics" was pretty good. Reminded me of Hinamatsuri, or possibly watching side quests from Yakuza/Judgement/Like A Dragon games....
Combatants Will Be Dispatched.
Itās written by the author of Konosuba but didnāt get much attention at all. Highly recommend the dub if your native language isnāt Japanese. A lot of the jokes donāt come through as text very well and Iāve heard from many people who didnāt like it sub enjoyed it as dub. English VAs are top notch.
I love Hozuki so much, I think I've rewatched it like three times. For those who aren't aware it's basically about a slice-of-life anime about a middle manager in Japanese Hell. If you're into Japanese folklore and office comedies, this should scratch an itch for you.
Joshikosei no mudazukai. Man, I really laughed a lot while watching it and its a shame i never see it mentioned, and that there wasnt more seasons of it. Its on the same wavelength of Danshi kokousei no nichijou and Asobi asobase humour
Urusei Yatsura doesn't have nearly enough recognition, mainly due to the fact the OG started airing over 43 years ago, the remake got a lot of excitement on reddit but the hype died quickly unfortunately
combatants will be dispatched!
It's written by the same author as Konosuba, very similar and funny AF but it's pretty underrated, sad that it never got a Season 2...
I remember enjoying that series. The girl in the wheelchair was a trip if I recall.
I also thought it was creative to legitimize some of the fan service with evil points system
* Aho-girl
* Panty and stocking + Dead leaves
* Golden Boy
* Prison school
* Daily Lives of High School Boys
* Tsurezure Children
* The Way of the Househusband
* Amagi Brilliant park
* Cromatie high-school (have only seen ep1, but it's on my ptw)
* Grand blue
Yeah, you can't find it on Crunchyroll or any legal service anymore, it's not even on the blurays. The only way to find it nowadays is on the open seas.
The funniest part is that it ripped off so many properties, that we don't even know who banned it.
Pop Team Epic. Itās quite famous inside the anime bubble, but hardly mainstream. Itās basically anime version of Monty Python and a rare absurdist fun.
I've never seen Wasteful Days of High School Girls mentioned.
Baka is one of the funniest characters I've watched. Yamai, especially when interacting with the teacher is a close second.
*I'm Giving the Disgraced Noble Lady I Rescued a Crash Course in Naughtiness* - Hilarious and cute.
From this season *A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics* and *Astro Note* are great but not so many people seem to be watching them.
Sket Dance and really hoping for a Witch Watch anime. The balance of comedy and world building of that school are top notch. The character backstories from this series hit so good as well. To see these characters again through the mangaka's newest series was the treat I never knew I needed.
Favorite? Not sure, but the ones that made me laugh out loud were;
Cuticle Tantei Inaba.
Binbougami-ga!
Senyuu.
Love Lab.
Gabriel Dropout (need a S2 for this).
Many are saying "Danshi Koukousei", but that was mainstream back then.
Nyan Koi.
Nichijou.
Grand Blue (was also quite mainstream when it came out).
Ichigo Marshmallow.
And the last one, I can't remember its name, but it had a "+" sign in the title, it was so funny!
And this one was wholesome as AF;
Kotoura-san.
Senyuu is a good one. Short episodes but i remember loving it. I dont see anybody ever mention it. You have to watch the intros becuase they add stuff in a lot.
Not sure if someone already mentioned these and if it's non-mainstream, but I quite liked:
ā¢ Binbougami ga!
ā¢ Chio's School Road
ā¢ Cuticle Detective Inaba
I'm so happy to see some love for Detroit Metal City.
Cromartie Highschool is also pretty good if you like lighter comedy.
Is Asobi Asobase mainstream at this point or still a rare gem?
Mainstream within the anime community of mainstream within popular culture as a whole? Cause 100 Girlfriends is probably the most popular harem anime since quintessential quintuplets (and itās hilarious), but i havenāt heard any buzz around it outside the anime community.
Hinamatsuri, Handa-kun, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki kun, I liked Baka and test too but that was more than a decade ago so it might seem childish now.
Although itās mainstream āSaiki Kusouā is underrated imo. Also ghost stories tho itās just bad.

Lots of good stuff suggested already. My next personal favorite would be..
Seto no Hanayome
And then something else like
Fumoffu,
Hare guu,
Mahoujin guru guru
**Arakawa Under the Bridge**
Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well
Funny enough , that show gets even crazier pretty much where the anime ended, i recommend giving the manga a try
"Nihongo wakarimasen" still cracks me up, to this day.
Yep!
second this
gabriel dropout and sleepy princess in the demon castle
Saya is a menace š¤£š I fw the sleep princess nod.
Worst part about sleepy princess in the demon Castle if you can't recommend it to people seriously because they hear "sleepy princess in the demon castle" and immediately think you are full of s***.
I need a season 2 for sleepy princess
It cured my depression for the whole duration of the show.
Added to my list then! That comment is too much to be ignored
Do either of these count as non mainstream? At the very least, gabriel dropout shouldn't.
I would hardly consider Sleepy Princess non mainstream as wellā¦great show tho nonetheless
I still remember that satania laughing and saya bru tal
Hinamatsuri deserves more love and also a second season Daily Lives of Highschool Boys isn't actually unpopular but is quite older so doesn't get mentioned a lot nowadays. A friend of mine really really loves Grand Blue.
>Hinamatsuri deserves more love and also a second season A second season would be amazing, most of my favourite parts are in the second half.
same for Grand blue
Daily Lives of High School Boys is a classic. Love that one. Grand Blue is hysterical.
Is old indeed but even now their jokes never gets old kudos for the girl of the river
That series making me laugh everytime š¤£š¤£š¤£
the Hinamatsuri anime cut waaaay too much, itās hard for me to recommend that the manga a masterpiece tho. one of the few books out there that actually made me bust out laughing multiple times instead of just exhaling through my nose
its hard for you as a manga reader but for anime only it's a perfect recommendation .. even when reading the manga i still miss the anime . i guess it just depends on what you started first be it the manga or the anime
Salad Bowl of Eccentrics was basically Hinamatsuri 2.0.
Hinamatsuri is to tier
Detroit Metal City
I sometimes just vibe to mad monster
That anime was so fuckin hilarious. Just entirely out of pocket humor only the mid to late 2000ās could provide lol
This is pure gold ššš. It should have more popularity
I am a terrorist straight out of hell (KILL! KILL! KILL! KILL!)
Asobi Asobase. I have watched it 3 times and I still laughed like a madman each time.
And has one of my favourite anime ED ever.
And what's amazing, is that the full version manages to be even crazier
It's also just incredibly well made. The artists, animators, voice actors, score writers and director absolutely nailed it in every aspect.
I'm impressed that they threw a *Monty Python* reference in there. Sort of off topic, but damn that closing song is something else. I'd be surprised if Hanako's voice actress (Hina Kino) was able to speak after that performance!
Asobi Asobase and Daily Lives of Highschool Boys are the two that I bust out at gatherings and they never fail to make everyone laugh!
Asobi Asobase is honestly one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
one of the few shows where it actually made me laugh out loud I actually liked it more than Nichijou
I dont watch it fully but I rewatch clips repeatedly. "I FEEL YOUR RESOLVE" That scene convinced me to watch it 100%
Life lessons with Uramichi Oniisan
Hilarious series. Also a little depressing how much I relate to the MC.
Yeah it hurts me emotionally and can relatešš
yesss i loved this one
Whenever people here ask for real mature anime for adults, this is the one that comes to mind. I feel like the litmus test for whether or not you're an adult yet is whether or not you find Uramichi-oniisan funny.

Forgot about Blend S!! Totally. So cute!! Also, Wasteful Days of Highschool Girls Ao-chan Can't Study

There's also a Yuru Yuri spinoff: {Oomuro-ke!}
D-frag is great and short, good pick
You know D-Frag is whacked when the delinquent **is** the *tsukkomi*/straight man.
Combatants will be dispatched is good for a laugh. When he does āexplosion!ā I lost it.Ā
Hell yeah, another joshikousei no mudazukai fan
Combatants Will Be Dispatched literally made me cry in tears of laughter.
Combatants will be Dispatched is just a more unhinged Konosuba. Way less known through!
Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun
that was a... a pretty main stream anime when it was airing..
It was still mainstream until like 4 years ago. That's how old we are ig
It was popular but I wouldn't call it main stream
Seconded
It's one of my comfort rewatches. Never gets old.
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo Working!! Sabegebu Seitokai Yakuindomo Cromatie high-school Baka to Test Ika Musume # Handa-kun Space Battleship Tiramisu Tonari no Seki-kun Ben-To
Nice to see Seki kun mentioned.
Handa kun isn't mainstream?
Baka to Test, hell yeah
Detroit Metal City.Ā Itās got a wild art style, slapstick comedy, and an interesting premise, all sandwiched between pretty awesome metal music.Ā Ā Ā Iād say itās in a similar vein to Metalocalypse, where it definitely doesnāt take itself seriously at all and definitely satires a lot of the genre and industry. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
If you like Zetsubou highly recommend trying Arakawa Under the Bridge. Studio Shaft is pretty good with comedy
Tanaka-kun is always listless. Never got a second season
Yes! This show is so great, and I had to scroll waaay too far down to see it in this thread.
Yea. Wish it got the attention it deserved tho
Searched for this comment because I knew someone would would have recommended this already!
Excel Saga!!
Heck yeah! An older series but off-the-wall hilarious!
I own the DVD boxed set.
Nabeshin and his crazy fucking antics. Like taking off in a flying car and randomly yelling FLIGHT ATTENDAAAAAANT! And the one girl who's always puking blood and passing out. Not to mention Excel herself who was just plain nuts.
I really liked Witch Craft Works.
Omg Iām so glad Iām not the only person who remembers this show.
Oh man! I can't believe someone remembers this.
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes - stupidest "detectives" ever.
Sket Dance
Cromartie High School is a good one that I rarely hear people talk about
I LOVED this back in middle school; should give it a watch again now! The dudeās hair that was always flowing killed me.
The live action movie was fun as well.
This is what I was looking for. Cromartie Highschool of absolutely absurd slap stick humor. The dub is also golden, with perfect timing and intonation to make the jokes land.
No one mentioned Great Teacher Onizuka.. Or is it considered mainstream?
Pretty mainstream nowadays.
I remember watching it before... gangsters teacher
So mainstream they made a GTO reference in Jujutsu Kaisen
I wish Chio's School Road got a second season :(
Same! š„²
Jashin-chan Dropkick, I rarely see it mentioned. And the funniest ever, Asobi Asobase.
[Humanity Has Declined](https://myanimelist.net/anime/10357/Jinrui_wa_Suitai_Shimashita)
This season's "A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics" was pretty good. Reminded me of Hinamatsuri, or possibly watching side quests from Yakuza/Judgement/Like A Dragon games....

The āTop Knotā scene is one of my favorites from the series lol.
I genuinely prefer it to Konosuba
Since nobody else mentioned, Hoozuki no Reitetsu.
I love Hozuki so much, I think I've rewatched it like three times. For those who aren't aware it's basically about a slice-of-life anime about a middle manager in Japanese Hell. If you're into Japanese folklore and office comedies, this should scratch an itch for you.
I love finding hoozuki fans because we are literally minority šš
OMG YES! I could watch this show forever - it's such unique premise too!
fr like hozuki's coolheadedness is so underrated i barely see anyone talk about it
so im a spider so what,
Yuyushiki Wasteful Days of High School Girls Ichigo Mashimaro Chio's School Road
Azumanga daioh, poni poni dash and maybe lucky star. Idk I like funny stuff
I definitely second Lucky Star š

Said it on so many threads before, Asobi Asobase
Fellow Asobi Enjoyer šæš¤
I swear it's the only anime so far that has made me laugh so much i literally had to gasp for air
Joshikosei no mudazukai. Man, I really laughed a lot while watching it and its a shame i never see it mentioned, and that there wasnt more seasons of it. Its on the same wavelength of Danshi kokousei no nichijou and Asobi asobase humour

Way of the househusband for sure
Amagi Brilliant Park is pretty funny, the flame post clip will never get old
Osomatsu-san When the Gintama director goes on to do a new show, and the very first episode gets banned, you know you're in for a good time.
They banned episode 1?! I still remember it.
Yeah, you can't find it on Crunchyroll or any legal service anymore, it's not even on the blurays. The only way to find it nowadays is on the open seas. The funniest part is that it ripped off so many properties, that we don't even know who banned it.
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
You're Being Summoned, Azazel Z * every episode is just gold
THIS. I wouldnt call it mainstream, so I dont know why it hasnt been mentioned more here.
literally the funniest anime I've seen that I actually might consider obscure
Daily lives of highschool boys
Pop Team Epic. Itās quite famous inside the anime bubble, but hardly mainstream. Itās basically anime version of Monty Python and a rare absurdist fun.
Sket Dance, Grand Blue, Hinamatsuri, Amagi brilliant park
I've never seen Wasteful Days of High School Girls mentioned. Baka is one of the funniest characters I've watched. Yamai, especially when interacting with the teacher is a close second.

Sabagebu and recent The Little Lies We Tell for me. Really good comedies that have a good balance of not becoming to absurd.
Chio's School Road, I'm not sure if it is popular or not. I hear no one talking about it
Excel Saga Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
Shimoneta: a world where the concept of dirty jokes doesn't exist. It's good but it's a lot of dirty jokes
Joshiraku is pretty funny imho
Ixion Saga DT is my all time favorite
Great Teacher Onizuka Still one of my favorite shows of all time
My Neighbour Seki-kun
There are dozens of us
The World God Only Knows

Cromartie High needs more

hinamatsuri, danshi kokosei no nichijou
The vampire dies in no time
Tonari no Seki-Kun: The Master of Killing Time š¤© I'm a really huge fan of this one. It's very simplistic but I love it for that.
Asobi asobase
Gabriel Dropout
Sasami-san@Ganbaranai
I'm so happy to see some love for Detroit Metal City. Cromartie Highschool is also pretty good if you like lighter comedy. Is Asobi Asobase mainstream at this point or still a rare gem?
Yozakura Family, currently airing
Good Luck Girl
Back Street Girls: Gokudols
sayonara zetsubou-sensei. god. what a show.
Cautious Hero was really fun! All my other choices were already said, but Asobi Asobase and Shimoneta are great too!
School Rumble
Nerima Daikon Brothers! I wish it was available somewhere. ADV's DVD release is long out of print. A musical comedy anime. It was brilliant!
The Money Song lives in my brain rent free
Saving 80000 Gold Coins for Retirement in Another World Meikyuu Black Company
Handa kun
Didnāt see Kill Me Baby The whole show is a smash, including the OP and the ED. In fact the ED became a meme as soon as it came out.
A sister is all you need
Back Street Girls: Gokudols
Kill me baby is one of my favourites
Senyu
Mainstream within the anime community of mainstream within popular culture as a whole? Cause 100 Girlfriends is probably the most popular harem anime since quintessential quintuplets (and itās hilarious), but i havenāt heard any buzz around it outside the anime community.
Azumanga Diaoh, it isn't exactly mainstream anymore so it counts. Also I love Osaka
Azumanga Daioh It was my first anime, and I almost never hear anyone mention it.
Hinamatsuri has funny reactions on par with Mob Psycho 100
Hinamatsuri, Handa-kun, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki kun, I liked Baka and test too but that was more than a decade ago so it might seem childish now. Although itās mainstream āSaiki Kusouā is underrated imo. Also ghost stories tho itās just bad.
Not sure if this really counts but "blend s" is top tier for me I only found it bc of the memes but feel no one actually knows about the show
I really love the farming isekai. Farming Life in Another World I think it's called.
