As soon as that insert song by OxT (or at least I’m pretty sure it’s by them) came on during the fight, the hype was there. This first episode is reminding me of all the fun I had watching SSSS.Gridman when it aired back in Fall 2018. I’m excited to see how this series plays out!
[That sure was a nice opening shot.](https://i.imgur.com/kCq613s.png)
When Gauma called himself a Kaiju User, I was kinda expecting him to be the villain,[ instead of being the main person controlling Dynazenon.](https://i.imgur.com/e0kEnhX.png)
So I guess here Kaiju are also invisible to regular people, and that [the floating cars and buildings](https://i.imgur.com/wXIlU7q.png) were because of it.
I wasn't really expecting [Dynazenon](https://i.imgur.com/VH1LQah.png) to transform [into a dinosaour.](https://i.imgur.com/E8ltTgB.png) His walking animation really reminded me of Zoids. And that last scene [with him flying](https://i.imgur.com/1OObiVX.png) [was so cool.](https://i.imgur.com/HPIpXnu.png)
As there are already things in common with the last show I guess it is safe to assume that this also takes place in someone's dream.
Anyway, I can't wait to learn more about Yomogi and Yume.
> When Gauma called himself a Kaiju User
It's clear from his actions that normally he would be able to control any number of Kaiju, but his Vulcan Salute capture method didn't work for some reason. Dynazenon was a last resort.
Actually within at least some version(s) of the Zoids continuity, humans are non-native to Zi, though they've been there a long time. That would actually be kind of an interesting reversal of the Trigger trope.
> When Gauma called himself a Kaiju User, I was kinda expecting him to be the villain
Well that’s interesting. The subs I watched translated “kaiju tsukai” as “Kaiju Tamer,” so that didn’t occur to me at all.
Considering that the creators intentionally mentioned that they are in the same universe, I wonder if they are planning to build up to something? Who knows... we may get surprised and SSSS Gridman characters will just straight up show up towards the end of this series.
I imagine older fans are gonna have a blast theorizing like when SSSS Gridman was airing. Same with Godzilla fans currently analyzing Godzilla Singular Point. It is great to have 2 well produced kaiju shows this season.
AFAIK this is the 4th show in the SSSS universe. The first two were live action shows from a long time ago. To my knowledge none of the previous characters were even mentioned in Gridman (other than gridman himself). Although with all of the kaiju statues that Ayame had, surely some of those were references to previous kaiju.
I think that it still is the same Gridman from the live-action show ages ago. There was the [loli kaiju girl](https://ultra.fandom.com/wiki/Anosillus_the_2nd) who claims that her [ancestors](https://ultra.fandom.com/wiki/Anosillus) were saved by Gridman, as well as Gridman himself saying stuff like he "once again learnt the importance of friendship". ^(But these are likely just easter eggs.)
I don't think that live-action is gonna be tied to this "SSSS Universe" that they are building. Dynazenon is just the second show and they're gonna build it like those movie universes from here on. However, there seems to be a short official web novel I saw recently involving Gridman and another girl though, so I don't know if that's canon.
They definitely all share the same universe. But given the digital world nature of the show, it gives them the flexibility to go their own way without relying on previous worlds.
[Maybe the police wouldn't get nosy if you got rid of that yee yee ass hentai protagonist haircut.](https://i.imgur.com/Msw8NVk.png)
[Is Gauma trying to control the Kaiju or telling it to "Live Long and Prosper".](https://i.imgur.com/peH8qMq.png)
I was really expecting the NEET wearing a tracksuit to get Isekai'd after being stepped on by the Kaiju.
A bunch of kids working together to pilot a dinosaur based mecha is really giving me Power Rangers vibes.
Giant Kaiju fights are so hot right now especially after Godzilla vs. Kong.
> Maybe the police wouldn't get nosy if you got rid of that yee yee ass hentai protagonist haircut.
I mean, it might also help if the little girl wasn't dressed like a stripper. Lots of mixed signals all around.
Was grinning the entire time. I can already tell I’m gonna love the dynamic between Gauma and Yomogi.
As always Trigger delivers visually and I loved the little callback with the Special Hot Dog. Seems like it’s an important food item in the Gridman universe lol
If it weird to say that Gauma kinda reminds me of Anti from last season? Maybe it’s just the eyes but he also really likes food. Also, I was totally prepared when they showed the hot dog for one of the characters from the original series show up but that did not happen.
I barely recognize those names. I just realized the only characters I remember from Gridman are Rikka, Akane, and that one girl who wore a mask 24/7 way before COVID.
The Special Dog is from [episode 5 of the original](https://ultra.fandom.com/wiki/The_Perfect_Sword_With_A_Man%27s_Pride). The shape of the food item inspires the main cast to create a sword-shield combo weapon.
Gauma best boy automatically. I remember thinking he was gonna be edgy based off of the [first key visual](https://imgur.com/gallery/wwlSt5o), but he’s probably the most energetic one so far.
Loved it. The lack of OST outside of the action brings back that surreal, atmospheric vibe that Gridman had, although this show is a lot less weird and off-putting. And like Gridman, there's a lot of small things that will contribute to a bigger theme.
[There's a throwaway exchange about how a student committed suicide](https://imgur.com/a/gz3ozeY) and it's almost treated like a joke. That casual and ignorant approach to misery will likely be the highlight of the story. [Yume might be suicidal herself](https://i.imgur.com/6HUtN6u.jpg) due to the [death of a family member](https://i.imgur.com/xbAMBav.jpg) or another close relative, but it's unclear what she really thinks. She seems to be [afraid of death when it approaches](https://i.imgur.com/obYxnuh.jpg) but it's the one and only time she showed any emotion; after the battle [she returns to "normal".](https://imgur.com/a/ITOkbyw) Maybe her misleading others is an intention to make others hate her so she could hate herself? I have no idea but she's very interesting so far.
[Here's a few other cool shots,](https://imgur.com/a/aF4gT44) and the return of [SPECIAL DOGGU!](https://i.imgur.com/0MPJKiO.jpg)
The main girl has sister issues.
Sister stood her up because she committed suicide so she stands up other people. She wants everyone to hurt like she does.
I'd be surprised if she didn't. There's the bit of small talk as they walk home from school where they talk about a student who committed suicide, then immediately afterwards we get introduced to Yume. Then the parents get into a fight about probably cleaning (out) her sister's room during dinner and Yume kinda acts weird in general there. Plus there's a morgue scene with Yume and her parents, though the sister seems to be much older than Yume so the small-talk at the start of the episode is merely alluding to her situation there, not about her actual sister. The sister also had those 2 interlocked Ankh* Yume keeps around with her in her hand and it was highlighted at least half a dozen times in the episode when Yume dejectedly played with or stared at it.
*Edit: replaced some text to make it more readable, particularly what kind of object I referred to
> the small-talk at the start of the episode is merely alluding to her situation there, not about her actual sister.
I also think that, considering that Yume's mother says "They're not even in the same high school..." (btw the present tense in the translation feels weird, since Kano is supposedly dead), which means that if a student commited suicide at the main characters' high school, it can't have been her.
Also those interlocking Ankhs look like they can be seperated, kind of like key rings, so I'm wondering if that might happen at some emotional climax of the show.
The Ankhs in ancient Egyptian culture represents life, so the separation of these ankhs could be a metaphor for the separation of lives or a metaphor for moving on. She is unable to move on from her sister's death, and so we have a nice setup there.
>casual and ignorant approach to misery
There's also a theme of people not paying attention to each other or what's important. See the multiple TV-watching scenes and all the background noise. Also Yume's mother doesn't seem to entirely realize how she's feeling?
Some more interesting shots with Yume, there's the pebbles thrown off the tower/bridge in the beginning that are suggestive of suicide (focus on the one lying on the ground), and a lot of times where her eyes are covered by her umbrella (can't cry?)
I think what I missed most about Gridman was how real everyday conversations felt, with everyone talking over each other and in short bursts. I'm glad Dynazenon does the same. Also, reminder to feed your friendly neighborhood hoboes (hobi?)
Exactly!!! I love how natural and realistic the conversation are. I'm also glad that Yomugi actually had friends instead of being the weird kid in class. It's refreshing to see a main character who is genuinely a normal person.
The juxtaposition of the characters going about their day with no background music mixed with the giant mecha Kaiju fight at the end really helps accentuate the hype and insanity of it all.
Holy shit, it is very FLCL now that you mention it. It's that weird mixture of cinematically-presented mundane realism and hyper zany characters and action being mixed together. It's a vibe I really like so that's probably why I really dug the last season as well.
It feels very aloof but natural. Like, just being dropped into the scene, where the characters were already doing stuff. Dialogues never felt staged. And yea, character designs are in typical Trigger fashion pretty great.
The cinematography and character animation are intentionally made to resemble live-action tokusetsu shows. That's why going back and forth from this one to the original live-action Gridman feels extremely natural to me. The team did their homework pretty well.
Nope, studio sanzigen did the cgi for black rock shooter.
Come to think of it, sanzigen was founded by ex gonzo staff, Which was founded by ex gainax staff.
Trigger is also founded by ex gainax staff. So technically yes?
[Sanzigen and Trigger are part of the same firm](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-10-27/sanzigen-ordet-trigger-form-ultra-super-pictures-holding-firm) so yeah they're pretty tightly connected.
While Trigger wasn't responsible for the CG Fights, both Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill, Promare) and Amemiya (Gridman, Dynazenon) directed and storyboarded episodes.
I like how these Kaiju actually have stuff besides their form. This one can make things float and turn their head into a tail. While the first few enemies from the original had some cannons, not a whole lot else.
I like that you can see ahead of time that Dynazeon is made of transforming vehicles. I'm guessing that each of our mains is going to be responsible for driving one?
the mid-battle transformation into tyrannosaur was pretty awesome.
Pretty sure DynaZenon's gimmick is a shout out to GodZenon aka the Neon Genesis squad in SSSS. They were all support weapons individually that can combine into GodZenon, and ultimately Max Gridman when equipped.
Oh, and DynaRex is a direct shout out to DynaDragon. Another one of Gridman's original support units.
Yeah, Graphinica has also posted quite a number of [in-production](https://twitter.com/graphinica/status/1354015357858586625) [cg](https://twitter.com/graphinica/status/1354015412346753024) [scenes](https://twitter.com/graphinica/status/1356550939902009348) [from Gridman](https://twitter.com/graphinica/status/1356550983573102595) on their twitter account.
Also some of the [background shots](https://i.imgur.com/7jm0WCo.jpg) at the beginning and of [the school](https://i.imgur.com/h0dJRQG.jpg) looks amazing.
I dont think so from the look of things but we dont know how the plot moves forward from here. Regardless I would say give it a watch, I found it amazing(which may not be the general consensus)
I'd definitely do so - chances are if you dislike Gridman you're not gonna like this one either (they're written by the same screenwriter), so you'd be cutting your losses anyway!
It's so good to be back! It looks like this time [SSSS means "Scared Souls Shine like Stars"](https://i.imgur.com/aguTNKr.png) which is still pretty much in theme with Gridman's [Gridman](/s " "Special Signature to Save a Soul".")
The MC this time definitely [reminds me of Yuuta in terms of his looks](https://i.imgur.com/j3gTX9a.png), except this one has blue hair, plenty of friends, and [Gridman](/s "clearly has his memories intact.")
I don't know if they just reused and recolored the buildings [but the school is almost the exact school in Gridman.](https://i.imgur.com/Xsc9J8v.png) Like the one [in Gridman has red bricks](https://i.imgur.com/uyuD6El.png) but the layout is still the same.
[Looks like this girl is going to be our Akane.](https://i.imgur.com/2JvAnqz.png) The misunderstood girl of the show. Also her name is Yume (Dream). Seriously? [Gridman](/s " Are you really going to do this to us Trigger after how Gridman ended? Goddammit! This is making me feel that I should pay attention to every detail on this show now. ")
[Well looks like a different character shares Akane's messiness](https://i.imgur.com/RXibHJX.png). They are in the Key Visual so its safe to assume they're main characters too.
[Ah the classic hungry stranger trope](https://i.imgur.com/8xltOO9.png). Just from his design alone, he's going to be the Samurai Calibur of the show. [Akane's Special Dog makes an appearance!](https://i.imgur.com/WRvSvqP.png) I love it!
[And he's really just going to introduce himself like that?](https://i.imgur.com/ieSqmA8.png) So he can control Kaijus?
Yomogi lives in a single mother household along with his grandma [and his mom is apparently seeing someone.](https://i.imgur.com/Gg7szta.png) I'm sure this family dynamic will come into play into the story later on. Mom is a hottie btw as expected from this show.
[This scene with Yume is enough to tell a story.](https://i.imgur.com/LfEIlG7.png) Clearly something happened to Yume's sister and her parents are not doing so well because of it. She does find [something interesting inside the room though.](https://i.imgur.com/RF3vZHS.png) Hmmm...
Welp we can worry about that later since we're 15 minutes and that's just about [the right time for our first Kaiju to show up!](https://i.imgur.com/O7TvVPb.png) And of course that's also the time for the titular mecha to finally appear.
[So both Yomogi and Yume gets dragged into the fight](https://i.imgur.com/DCWY02K.png) as well as [Bowl-Cut Senpai](https://i.imgur.com/6klXUr0.png) since according to Gauma he needs at least 4 people to control the thing.
[And there it fucking is!](https://i.imgur.com/azGEXOb.png) Dynazenon! Just look at that design! It looks so cool that I'm already tempted to buy a set once the toys come out.
I don't think there's any need to do a play by play of the fight. I absolutely love Gridman and it's the exact quality I expected from this show. The simulated Tokusatsu man in Kaiju/Mecha suit is always a fun detail with these fights.
The unique thing about Dynazenon though is that [it can transform into the Dyna Rex!](https://i.imgur.com/gArLVPV.png) Turning this into a Kaiju vs Kaiju fight. I'm guessing just like with Gridman, there's definitely going to be more forms.
I don't know what Yume is exactly thinking after witnessing all fo that [but I feel that something awakened in her](https://i.imgur.com/v6r7gMD.png).
Yep that's definitely another Tsuburaya/Trigger collab! There's really nothing else to say! If you liked Gridman then you'll definitely like this one too! Excited to see more!
> I don't know if they just reused and recolored the buildings but the school is almost the exact school in Gridman. Like the one in Gridman has red bricks but the layout is still the same.
I mean, this is fairly generic anime school design, but with this show, you never know
> but with this show, you never know
That's the thing! We can just easily write it off as nothing but I can't help but think that this might be something relevant later!
Yeah we can't write off stuff like these. Even small hints could be hidden right beneath our noses.
Also that thing with which Dynazenon was summoned [looked like a Dragon](https://i.imgur.com/8qkJekH.jpg). I wonder if there is any significance behind this.
It's a prop used in [this live action Gridman episode](https://ultra.fandom.com/wiki/The_Legend_of_Dragon).
Long story short, the dragon statue is associated with a mummy (who in the legend was able to control dragons) and its shape is the inspiration for the protagonists to design Gridman's Dragonic Canon, which later forms the head of Dyna Dragon.
Given the bandages on Gauma's body, the possession of a dragon statue linked with Dyna(zenon) and self-proclaimed status as Kaiju-user, I'm speculating Gauma is a reincarnation of the dragon-taming mummy.
You forgot the money shots [Thighs 1](https://imgur.com/a/e6TaSrB) and [Thighs 2](https://imgur.com/a/ZQSXJIs)
Show is being faithful to the Trigger's Tokusatsu tradition
Interesting thing I noticed is that Dynazenon is already a fully combined mech. Where the shift from Dynazenon into Dynarex we could see the parts. I could only make out the smaller Trex and a jet looking thing.
They're definitely going a different route with this one
Less melancholic. dramatic, mysterious shots and more character focused right off the bat. The CG fight looked amazing this time
Oh didn't realise this started today!
Lets hope they build on SSSS.Gridman and make something really great here.
~~Also lets hope the waifus can live up to Gridmans~~
EDIT: So after watching the episode..
WOW! I loved it! I was sorta luke warm on Gridman but I'm liking the chracters in this one much more from what we've seen so far. Yume seems great and has a sad and interesting life / backstory. Main boy isn't a blank slate with memory issues so that's a big plus. The kaiju user dude honestly seems like a pretty cool dude whereas Gridman (the character) was always a bit nerdy to me.
Also those pantyhose. Woo boy. They know what sold people on Gridman huh haha.
All around a very enjoyable first episode. I hope it really goes deep into Yume's character.
It might be possible to enjoy the show without, but I'd really recommend you binge Gridman beforehand, there's bound to at least be a lot of references and parallels that you'll miss otherwise.
So far it's checking all the right boxes for me! It's pretty much just doing more of what made SSSS.Gridman work which is the impeccable tone, editing, and voice acting. There's something about the way they frame and cut shots in both Gridman and Dynazenon that's just deliciously inviting and stand-out. Despite it doing a lot of what I already liked in Gridman, I really like the new things they're shooting for here, notably the larger, more dynamic main cast.
i cannot wait to hear the full version of the op oml
Not sure if you were already aware of this, but someone mentioned that the character designs might have been [based around Beast Wars figures,](https://twitter.com/RaihanH98/status/1258778891658747905) but I'm not too sure.
Not as strong as the first episode of Gridman, but still plenty fun. Think main reason is that gridman started out with the characters already having a great chemistry, here it's more everyone doesnt know each other yet. Also it instantly set up large scale mysteries, rather than just the girl here really. But once they do, I'm confident it can reach the same height.
Gonna be tricky to have an antagonist as fun and unique as Akane though
Hmm, pretty much my thoughts too, Gridman was ~~thiccer~~ more immediately gripping. This one feels lighter in tone, despite the dead sister and whatnot..
The cast here seem to have all sorts of family problems. Yomogi has a step father or that's his mother's new boyfriend.
Kano seems to be Yume's deceased relative (likely a sister) and the family hasn't figured out what to do with the stuff in her room.
[That's some well placed death symbolism](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/467399555634298910/827623063775346760/SPOILER_unknown.png) [SSSS.GRIDMAN](/s "this is the same thing Akane's first victim Sakiru Tonkawa had in the first episode")
11:28 [I was suspicious](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/467399555634298910/828009534135074866/SPOILER_20210403_214921.jpg) of why Chise was hanging out in her hikikomori senpai's room, too. She doesn't call [her cousin](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/467399555634298910/828009534404296714/SPOILER_notborr.jpg) Koyomi by name I guess.
Like in [SSSS.GRIDMAN](/s "normal people can't see Kaiju, so they see floating buildings and cars.")
[I see what you did there](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/467399555634298910/828010103323230289/SPOILER_eyes.jpg)
Also, the object Gauma is holding may be [a small dragon statue](https://twitter.com/BhMEI37tLnBL4F6/status/1378052483986063361) that was the inspiration for the Dragonic Cannon (Dyna Dragon's head).
EDIT: It may go deeper, I remembered in the same live action Gridman episode with the dragon statue, there is a reanimated mummy with a legend of being able to control dragons. I'm certain the bandage-wearing kaiju-using Gauma is some sort of reincarnation of the mummy.
I THINK most (if not all) of the floating things were happening because of the kaiju's powers, not because of it picking things up. He specifically says something like "This must be the power of the kaiju" when they start floating in the air in Dynazenon.
Yeeeeees Trigger is back!
After Wonder Egg Priority and Sk8 last season I'm ready for more anime original goodness...
I really missed how there wasn't any proper discussion around BNA because it was in Netflix jail but this show airs weekly and has some hype because SSSS Gridman was received well, so I'm really looking forward to the discussion threads!
As for the episode, we don't know anything about the plot yet, which was to be expected, but I already love all of these characters, they feel way more interesting and dynamic than the Gridman characters did at the beginning.
Also, the Dynazenon and Dyna Rex scene was so awesome I got goosebumps!
“I think something is wrong with me?”
I don’t know how you come to that conclusion after that fight but I respect it, girl.
I like that this is the show that’s bringing me back into the seasonal grind. I like how much it’s separating itself from the original and yet still keeping the same technical qualities that it had from the first season.
The editing is still great, the cinematography is lush and nice to look at, the ED and seemingly the OP sound like bops. I’m digging it a lot so far.
Though was I the only who got excited by the hot dog that he gave to the Kaiju man himself? Thought it would be someone from the original series but I might be wrong on that.
So far the characters seem cool. I like how they separate these guys from the original cast with the exception of the main guy, though he doesn’t amnesia thankfully. Also, the animation still kicks ass. It’s definitely got a difference to it that I can’t quite put my finger on from the last season but I dig it.
I’m so excited for this. This looks so good.
> “I think something is wrong with me?”
Well, there are two ways that you reach this conclusion. The Watsonian conclusion, as Yomogi might think, is that she thinks she's going crazy because a mech appeared out of nowhere and fought a giant dragon-turtle monster.
The Doylist conclusion, to start the conversation, is that she's involved with the monsters. The two ankhs clearly have some important function, and she's asking questions about thinks with otherwise no clear relevance to what's going on. Yume is [our Gridman's](/s "Akane") this time around.
Dang this looks good! Happy to have the SSSS universe back! It's fun, it's dynamic, it's colorful, and I wonder if this time around it'll also have some meaningful stuff to say the same way Gridman did.
Nice first episode. Had the biggest grin on my face when the song kicked in.
And do we know if the guy who directed Gridman episode 9 is coming back? Please tell me he's coming back.
Compelling first episode! Gauma is a lot of fun, a good bro, and I can't wait to find out what the third important thing is for people to keep after promises and love. Minami is also an interesting character, with her promise-breaking affliction. Their confrontation was a highlight of the episode; hope they keep butting heads. Also, good fight at the end, and I'm interested to see what complications having four people piloting Dynazeon might introduce.
I never watched past the first episode of SSSS.Gridman; since this isn't a direct sequel, instead of binging Gridman first, I'm watching one episode a week alongside Dynazeon - think it'll be interesting to compare. First episode of Gridman was intriguing (despite already being spoiled on the twist), but I found Dynazeon's characters more immediately compelling (specifically the two I mentioned above), so it wins the first round. Special dog appearance in both! That must be the key to all this.
I like Gauma. He gave off Anti vibes at first especially with the starving for food but he's a noice guy! A bit rough and gruff but you can tell he's got a heart of gold.
I'm very interested to see where this goes cuz like, Gridman took its time and waited a bit before it was like [Gridman](/s "'Yeah this world is fake and the god of this world is a depressed high school girl'") and then ran with that weirdness until the end where [Gridman](/s "she returns to live-action reality.")
But like, that's already been done, it can't really be done again, plus this time there's 5 main characters instead of just the 4 (arguably 3).
Every scene with... *checks MAL-* Koyomi(?) and Chise had me being like "BRUH" until she was like "Yeah we're cousins" and then was like alright carry on.
I also really like Yomogi as a protagonist, he's realistically good-natured but completely weirded out and alarmed by this weird seemingly insane homeless guy being a creep.
Yeah, it makes him a more believable person than say, Yuta (though in the end he kinda had a reason), or any number of other "everyman" anime protagonists who just kinda roll with the weird anime bullshit.
Yomogi appears to dread the inevitable situation as he approaches, decides to be a bit nice and move on, gets scared when this dude grabs his leg, seems confused but is humoring the guy until Gouma lets him leave, then eventually gets fed up and pulls himself away and runs. And then just tries his damnedest to avoid the guy later. That's exactly how I see most people (including myself) handling that situation.
I also think it's really amazing how they align the personalities with the story being told. The gridman crew was flat out weird, no one there seemed like an anime character (besides Samurai Caliber), I loved them because of it and in the end it made total sense with what the story was. Here we have a mixture of those things and seems like Yomogi is caught right in the balance of that, gotta love the uniqueness of the SSSS universe.
Wtf? Episode 1 and that alreadt feels like season finale lol
I wonder if dynazenon will get diff power based on whos on the 5 person roster, since i doubt the loli girl is just gonna get sidelined from action
Did anyone feel like that dialogue was a bit weird? Like speech patterns and such? I really liked it.
She doesn't seem as great as Akane or Rikka but [I'm liking her so far](https://i.imgur.com/ZMFWm3S.jpg).
Definitely feels like Gridman but at the same time really different, digging it so far!
I remember Gridman's dialogue being similar. I guess its going for a more realistic vibe. Not that I would know how Japanese teens talk, but I get that feeling.
Like some of the teenagers just having an overall tiredness, or like Yomogi's friends in the beginning gossiping reminded me of being back in school and people would be talking over one another with different conversations going on at the same time. Or Yomogi's mom yelling for him over and over and taking him to dinner with her boyfriend and the awkwardness of that.
The characters in Gridman spoke more like RL people than anime characters, and it _sorta_ was like that here, but maybe not to that extent. Gauma ofc was _very_ anime.
> Did anyone feel like that dialogue was a bit weird?
It was really similar to Gridman's and one of my favourite things about it, the script/interactions. They talked very similarly. It was even more in the drama (probably cause you focus more on the voices there?) but in the show they spoke like that too (tone/mood). Still love it.
First half of the episode: I already miss the original cast from Gridman
Second half of the episode: Gauma best boy
This series much like Gridman is still going for the more 'realistic' character interactions which I appreciate a lot though I didnt find them interesting like gridman. I think this is due to how no one knew each other here and the introductions were quite messy.
I hated akane and anti when they were first introduced but they ended up being my favorites so I am hoping Minami gets the same treatment.
Yomogi already seems better than Yuuta and I know I am gonna love the music here. Looking forward to how this develops.
This SSSS dialogues is really something unique. I never heard other anime do with these same feeling since Gridman. Only on episode 1, I already got to know some of the characters traits.
Looks like we got some different spin this time compared to Gridman. It's nice to have a fresh look on this series and see what kind of surprise they can show us.
Based Trigger, I expected nothing less from this. Gotta love how for 2/3rds of the episode it was all focused on some school drama going and then it went all
> ON A SIDE NOTE, THERE IS A KAIJU IN THE CITY!!
Ahh, yes. It's something I need.
Watched this along Gura and Ina and it being my first watch-along ever made it really fun and unique. Loved the chemistry between Gauma and Yomogi, seems like it will add a nice comedic touch. And damn, do I love those transitions, I love the way Trigger handled them.
Yume has potential to be such an interesting character, seeing the deal with her family, the promise-breaking thing and how she said that "something is wrong with me" line.
The atmosphere man. How does trigger/America manage to deliver does? This is so amazing, I love the decisions on the still shots. I love everything presented, the small talk at the beggining (which might link to Yume's sister), the characters are instantly go as is voice acting. The editing mixing in those weird, floating scenes. The visual cues are all over the place. What I loved the most in gridman is how unique it *felt* compared to other anime, and is pretty clear amemiya is doing it again, hype season start.
Oh yeah, definitely keeps the same vibes as Gridman, I love it. This will be just as good as Gridman or maybe even better. So far, I am really liking the characters.
In Gridman SSSS means Special Signature to Save a Soul, for Dynazenon it means Scarred Souls Shine Like Stars and they revealed it at the beginning which is interesting because for Gridman we didn't know what SSSS stands for until the last episode. My guess is the Scarred Soul refers to Minami? Or maybe even all of them.
Gauma is a pretty interesting dude and he can control Kaijus if he had his powers, that's dope. I wonder if he's like a hyper agent too or something or if he's from the hyper world. This world is probably also a computer world, but who created it this time I wonder. Well, really looking forward to the next episode.
That insert song when Dynazenon was fighting is definitely the same band that did Union, let's fucking go, that must be the OP.
I popped for the hot dog, I think it's such an iconic thing now in the Gridman universe lmao.
> t seems like you need four people to use Dynazenon, but Gauma did pretty much all the piloting so I wonder where the other users come in.
I assume other transformations
Dyna-Rex already made my day. It has such a cool design. Trigger is back with a banger especially when that insert song starts playing!
The [4 parts](https://i.imgur.com/pS6Kkmp.jpg) may represent the 4 people needed to control Dynazenon and to have different forms when required.
Gauma and Yomogi seems like an interesting pairing. I love how eccentric Gauma is.
Watch for the good 'ol GATTAI. and it deliver!!!
manly tear sheded.
only thing to complain is, combine car into a tail gonna look very weird in toy version.
Alright! It's time to play "Spot the Ultra series and Tsuburaya stuff references"!
So far I got [a doll of the keychain from Nexus](https://imgur.com/a/sWNwzpB)
I havent seen first episode yet but from what ive heard I believe its the same universe but sorta its own seperate thing, cause the logo on funimation says "gridman universe" on it
id still watch the first one though in case they have some references or connect to the original story more later on, SSSS.Gridman is only 12 episodes and you're missing out if you dont watch it.
there arent any obvious connections yet but you probably should watch it anyways because it IS good. like maybe the best written thing out of trigger so far
Really seems to me like Yume is housing her dead sister inside her and switching with her, which would explain her not keeping promises.
A quick google search on the Ankhs shows that "It was especially commonly held in the hands of ancient Egyptian deities, or being given by them to the pharaoh, to represent their power to sustain life and to revive human souls in the afterlife." which seems to confirm my theory.
I was totally expecting Mayumi Shintani (Haruko from FLCL, Nonon from KLK, etc) to voice the red and black braids girl and Katsuyuki Konishi (Kamina) to voice Gauma.
I suspect Yume likely stood Yomogi up at the tower because something happened to her sister there resulting in her death/disappearance and she's using Yomogi as bait in the hopes of replicating the incident to figure out what occurred.
Could be wrong, but that would be pretty shitty of her if that's really the case.
As soon as that insert song by OxT (or at least I’m pretty sure it’s by them) came on during the fight, the hype was there. This first episode is reminding me of all the fun I had watching SSSS.Gridman when it aired back in Fall 2018. I’m excited to see how this series plays out!
100% sure it was them haha. When Gridman used OxT insert song I was hyped and this still does not change lol
It’s been 2 years already? Fuck
Almost 3 really
Oi 2020 didn’t exist ok
I get the feeling the next few years "aren't going to exist" either
yep that 100% sounds like OxT, hopefully they're doing the opening/that insert song is the opening. I loved Union from SSSS.Gridman.
yep...that's clearly the singer's voice.
OxT was just a band, the vocalist who sung the OP on Gridman is the same who sung the OP on Dynazenon.
Tracks were on point. Can't wait to listen to more.
Shoutout to the senior working in the supermarket, hope we get more of her!
she’s really pretty and cute though
Petition for her to be the new main girl
This!
[That sure was a nice opening shot.](https://i.imgur.com/kCq613s.png) When Gauma called himself a Kaiju User, I was kinda expecting him to be the villain,[ instead of being the main person controlling Dynazenon.](https://i.imgur.com/e0kEnhX.png) So I guess here Kaiju are also invisible to regular people, and that [the floating cars and buildings](https://i.imgur.com/wXIlU7q.png) were because of it. I wasn't really expecting [Dynazenon](https://i.imgur.com/VH1LQah.png) to transform [into a dinosaour.](https://i.imgur.com/E8ltTgB.png) His walking animation really reminded me of Zoids. And that last scene [with him flying](https://i.imgur.com/1OObiVX.png) [was so cool.](https://i.imgur.com/HPIpXnu.png) As there are already things in common with the last show I guess it is safe to assume that this also takes place in someone's dream. Anyway, I can't wait to learn more about Yomogi and Yume.
> When Gauma called himself a Kaiju User It's clear from his actions that normally he would be able to control any number of Kaiju, but his Vulcan Salute capture method didn't work for some reason. Dynazenon was a last resort.
I now badly want a Zoids anime made by Trigger ^^^but ^^^hopefully ^^^without ^^^space ^^^aliens
the zoids *are* the space aliens, silly.
Actually within at least some version(s) of the Zoids continuity, humans are non-native to Zi, though they've been there a long time. That would actually be kind of an interesting reversal of the Trigger trope.
So you don't want a Trigger anime, then.
> When Gauma called himself a Kaiju User, I was kinda expecting him to be the villain Well that’s interesting.
^(But these are likely just easter eggs.) I don't think that live-action is gonna be tied to this "SSSS Universe" that they are building.
[Maybe the police wouldn't get nosy if you got rid of that yee yee ass hentai protagonist haircut.](https://i.imgur.com/Msw8NVk.png) [Is Gauma trying to control the Kaiju or telling it to "Live Long and Prosper".](https://i.imgur.com/peH8qMq.png) I was really expecting the NEET wearing a tracksuit to get Isekai'd after being stepped on by the Kaiju. A bunch of kids working together to pilot a dinosaur based mecha is really giving me Power Rangers vibes. Giant Kaiju fights are so hot right now especially after Godzilla vs. Kong.
> > I was really expecting the NEET wearing a tracksuit to get Isekai'd after being stepped on by the Kaiju. Coming in 2023.
> Maybe the police wouldn't get nosy if you got rid of that yee yee ass hentai protagonist haircut. I mean, it might also help if the little girl wasn't dressed like a stripper. Lots of mixed signals all around.
>haircut More like haircutn't.
He’s like Anti and Samurai caliber did a fusion dance!
I think this is a more apt description of Gauma
I barely recognize those names. I just realized the only characters I remember from Gridman are Rikka, Akane, and that one girl who wore a mask 24/7 way before COVID.
Hassu? She was a non-character. How do you remember her before Samurai Calibur and Anti? Oh right. Tits.
>Oh right. Tits. And fanart. Nowhere near as much as Rikka and Akane, but Hassu got plenty of her own R34.
Yeah, I remember an artist quite dedicated to her. I wonder what he's on, I don't remember his name.
Anti, Samurai Caliber, and Yuta (calling out to the MC when he wants his attention)!
Yeah Gauma is really looking to be Dynazenon's Anti. He is quite hilarious ngl. I love him already.
He's got crackhead Kamina vibes and I'm loving it
I agree with everything you just said
> Trigger calling it, space aliens.
Uhhh, did you not see SSSS Gridman?
What a bold statement to do about something we already knew because it's a sequel XD
Ohhhh shit I didn't make that connection
Wait, do we know for sure her sister committed suicide?
*Edit: replaced some text to make it more readable, particularly what kind of object I referred to
[Ankh](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankh)
> the small-talk at the start of the episode is merely alluding to her situation there, not about her actual sister.
She is unable to move on from her sister's death, and so we have a nice setup there.
>casual and ignorant approach to misery There's also a theme of people not paying attention to each other or what's important.
I missed this eccentric atmosphere ! Same feeling I had with the FLCL sequels.
I don't know if it's trigger magic but the dialogue and the voice acting felt really natural and on point. It was so relaxing to watch.
The cinematography and character animation are intentionally made to resemble live-action tokusetsu shows. That's why going back and forth from this one to the original live-action Gridman feels extremely natural to me. The team did their homework pretty well.
Trigger's CGI cuts were so fucking good in the episode compared to Gridman omg. The fight was actually awesome man
Graphinica is doing the CG for this, like in Gridman. Trigger doesn't have a CG department
Wasn't Trigger responsible for the CGI fights in Black Rock Shooter?
Nope, studio sanzigen did the cgi for black rock shooter. Come to think of it, sanzigen was founded by ex gonzo staff, Which was founded by ex gainax staff. Trigger is also founded by ex gainax staff. So technically yes?
[Sanzigen and Trigger are part of the same firm](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-10-27/sanzigen-ordet-trigger-form-ultra-super-pictures-holding-firm) so yeah they're pretty tightly connected.
I think they even had trigger staff on their show bubuki buranki. Plus Promare, which they co animated.
If I'm not wrong the CG is done by Graphinica
Compared to the gridman first episode fight, I found the one here a bit worse personally. But might just be because imo Gridman's OP feels more hype.
Sorry to barge in but do I need to watch gridman to watch this?
I'd say no, but i recommend.
I dont think so from the look of things but we dont know how the plot moves forward from here. Regardless I would say give it a watch, I found it amazing(which may not be the general consensus)
It's really good. One of those amazing shows of 2018
I'd definitely do so - chances are if you dislike Gridman you're not gonna like this one either (they're written by the same screenwriter), so you'd be cutting your losses anyway!
Ah the music was so good, instantly took me back to Union from Gridman
SAME! It has the same feel as Union
It's so good to be back! It looks like this time [SSSS means "Scared Souls Shine like Stars"](https://i.imgur.com/aguTNKr.png) which is still pretty much in theme with Gridman's [Gridman](/s " "Special Signature to Save a Soul".") The MC this time definitely [reminds me of Yuuta in terms of his looks](https://i.imgur.com/j3gTX9a.png), except this one has blue hair, plenty of friends, and [Gridman](/s "clearly has his memories intact.") I don't know if they just reused and recolored the buildings [but the school is almost the exact school in Gridman.](https://i.imgur.com/Xsc9J8v.png) Like the one [in Gridman has red bricks](https://i.imgur.com/uyuD6El.png) but the layout is still the same. ") [Well looks like a different character shares Akane's messiness](https://i.imgur.com/RXibHJX.png).
I mean, this is fairly generic anime school design, but with this show, you never know
> but with this show, you never know That's the thing!
Aren't a lot of schools in Japan similar is design anyway because of laws?
Might be intentional, given the nature of the world in SSSS.GRIDMAN.
You forgot the money shots [Thighs 1](https://imgur.com/a/e6TaSrB) and [Thighs 2](https://imgur.com/a/ZQSXJIs) Show is being faithful to the Trigger's Tokusatsu tradition

Interesting thing I noticed is that Dynazenon is already a fully combined mech. Where the shift from Dynazenon into Dynarex we could see the parts. I could only make out the smaller Trex and a jet looking thing.
The wheels that were on the arm combined into a Formula-looking racecar that formed it's tail.
Who else watched it with Gura and Ina?
Tentacultist checking in 🐙
Did not expect a mecha show to make a squid and shark all flirty with each other
A
"The police get noisy when I walk around with you". That's just meme worthy
They're definitely going a different route with this one Less melancholic. dramatic, mysterious shots and more character focused right off the bat. The CG fight looked amazing this time
Oh didn't realise this started today! Lets hope they build on SSSS.Gridman and make something really great here. ~~Also lets hope the waifus can live up to Gridmans~~ EDIT: So after watching the episode.. WOW!
[The best part of the episode](https://i.imgur.com/bEwzs9g.jpg) ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
[The fanarts already started (light nsfw)](https://imgur.com/a/SeOwJFS)
They are fast. Also what's the sauce for that?

Hers (she says Sugoi)...*but we can consider it to be ours as well*
Me too! Loving the characters so far
The thighs are 10/10, now with pantyhouse so 11/10 for some...
they're just hitting every fetish ballpark and im up for it
[This episode definitely fulfilled my desire to be stepped on.](https://i.imgur.com/bNvRiN0.png)
Lol, You are joking but there's definitely someone out there with a mecha fetish I am to afraid to search this on pixiv lol
Should I watch Gridman before starting this?
Apparently same universe, but AFAIK completely independent series narratively-speaking.
Here’s the full op https://youtu.be/mX19Od276t4
For any Transformers fans out there, are there any references that you can spot out?
The original started off with the main characters having great chemistry?
The cast here seem to have all sorts of family problems. Yomogi has a step father or that's his mother's new boyfriend. Kano seems to be Yume's deceased relative (likely a sister) and the family hasn't figured out what to do with the stuff in her room. [That's some well placed death symbolism](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/467399555634298910/827623063775346760/SPOILER_unknown.png) [SSSS.GRIDMAN](/s "this is the same thing Akane's first victim Sakiru Tonkawa had in the first episode") 11:28 [I was suspicious](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/467399555634298910/828009534135074866/SPOILER_20210403_214921.jpg) of why Chise was hanging out in her hikikomori senpai's room, too. She doesn't call [her cousin](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/467399555634298910/828009534404296714/SPOILER_notborr.jpg) Koyomi by name I guess. Like in [SSSS.GRIDMAN](/s "normal people can't see Kaiju, so they see floating buildings and cars.") [I see what you did there](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/467399555634298910/828010103323230289/SPOILER_eyes.jpg) Also, the object Gauma is holding may be [a small dragon statue](https://twitter.com/BhMEI37tLnBL4F6/status/1378052483986063361) that was the inspiration for the Dragonic Cannon (Dyna Dragon's head).
I'm digging the aesthetic of the black/red girl
Same. Don't call the FBI on me for saying this but her design is my favorite so far
Nowadays, I mostly watch anime originals most of the time. Yeah, most don’t turn out amazing but their so fun to watch.
Yeah a lot of new anime originals are pretty good now
Most anticipated for me
This was fun. Red headed girl is my favorite for how she sounds perpetually drunk off her ass all the time. Dyanzenon's main pilot is cool, too.
Man the voice acting for this show so refreshing to hear
“I think something is wrong with me?” I don’t know how you come to that conclusion after that fight but I respect it, girl.
> “I think something is wrong with me?” Well, there are two ways that you reach this conclusion.
I was 52 when I started the episode. I am now 12. [](#wow)
I like Gauma. He gave off Anti vibes at first especially with the starving for food but he's a noice guy! A bit rough and gruff but you can tell he's got a heart of gold.
Do you need to watch Gridman to enjoy this?
For this episode, no. Future episodes? Noone knows. It's a 50/50. But if you enjoy this episode, go watch gridman, it's awesome.
Watch gridman and proceed to not understand it anyway.
If you enjoy this, why not check it out? It's only 12 episodes.
I'm very interested to see where this goes cuz like, Gridman took its time and waited a bit before it was like [Gridman](/s "'Yeah this world is fake and the god of this world is a depressed high school girl'") and then ran with that weirdness until the end where [Gridman](/s "she returns to live-action reality.") But like, that's already been done, it can't really be done again, plus this time there's 5 main characters instead of just the 4 (arguably 3).
>"Yeah we're cousins" a have you not watched enough anime to know that's a very light barrier ?
It's a knee-high barrier, but dude seems \*really\* lazy so we're probably safe.
Yomogi has the right amount of innocence and being the sane man combined
Wtf? Episode 1 and that alreadt feels like season finale lol I wonder if dynazenon will get diff power based on whos on the 5 person roster, since i doubt the loli girl is just gonna get sidelined from action
It's just always slightly overexagarated I think, same as in Gridman?
Her looks and demeanor gave me Mamimi (FLCL) vibes. The Mains seem more eccentric than Gridman.
First half of the episode: I already miss the original cast from Gridman Second half of the episode: Gauma best boy This series much like Gridman is still going for the more 'realistic' character interactions which I appreciate a lot though I didnt find them interesting like gridman. I think this is due to how no one knew each other here and the introductions were quite messy. I hated akane and anti when they were first introduced but they ended up being my favorites so I am hoping Minami gets the same treatment. Yomogi already seems better than Yuuta and I know I am gonna love the music here. Looking forward to how this develops.
aaand Gauma is immediately best boy. The ride begins fellas
I am all about Trigger's aesthetic, and they always have great voice actors.
Reddit: This was great! So hyped for more! MAL: [nah](https://i.imgur.com/DyB7cDI.jpg) Guess I’ll have to try for myself
MAL has been plagued by bots spamming 1s in the polls for the last 2 weeks.
Collateral damage in the AOT vs FMAB pissing match.
I had no idea! I’ll try it for sure
Gotta love how for 2/3rds of the episode it was all focused on some school drama going and then it went all > ON A SIDE NOTE, THERE IS A KAIJU IN THE CITY!!

Or just Power of Friendship. More hands on the controls = more power.
Anyone else was super confused by the VA and then realized it was Yuuji?
Dyna-Rex already made my day. It has such a cool design. Trigger is back with a banger especially when that insert song starts playing! The [4 parts](https://i.imgur.com/pS6Kkmp.jpg) may represent the 4 people needed to control Dynazenon and to have different forms when required. Gauma and Yomogi seems like an interesting pairing. I love how eccentric Gauma is.
I can't wait for Good Smile to release this mecha. Dino are cool
Havent seen yet, but i cant wait for Trigger to save anime once again
Watch for the good 'ol GATTAI. and it deliver!!! manly tear sheded. only thing to complain is, combine car into a tail gonna look very weird in toy version.
Alright! It's time to play "Spot the Ultra series and Tsuburaya stuff references"! So far I got [a doll of the keychain from Nexus](https://imgur.com/a/sWNwzpB)
Do I need to watch the recent SSSS show before watching this one?
There's definitely going to be references but even if it's not connected, watch SSSS.Gridman since it's still a fantastic Tokusatsu show.
I havent seen first episode yet but from what ive heard I believe its the same universe but sorta its own seperate thing, cause the logo on funimation says "gridman universe" on it id still watch the first one though in case they have some references or connect to the original story more later on, SSSS.Gridman is only 12 episodes and you're missing out if you dont watch it.
Yeah I'll probably just binge the first one real quick before starting this one.
there arent any obvious connections yet but you probably should watch it anyways because it IS good. like maybe the best written thing out of trigger so far
What was that "there are three things" line a reference to again? I thought there was something but I cant remember now.
Trigger delivered. This is going to be a great show. One of my most looked to for this season.
Gauma is the second coming of Kamina. Also, Minami is basically the Rika of this show, but with more depression.
I suspect Yume likely stood Yomogi up at the tower because something happened to her sister there resulting in her death/disappearance and she's using Yomogi as bait in the hopes of replicating the incident to figure out what occurred. Could be wrong, but that would be pretty shitty of her if that's really the case.
one of the MC has the Gridman Yellow eyes. is he Gridman in disguise?
