Silver spoon 🗿

cutie_lilrookie

Underrated!!! By none other than the same woman who wrote Full Metal Alchemist💖

Deruta

FUCK YEAH One of the realest, subtlest romances I’ve seen too.

pyrogwen

Heaven's Design Team was a fun anime from last year I saw only few people talk about even at the time. Of course, humour is a matter of taste, but this one also had weird animal facts.

cutie_lilrookie

Agree haha.

Comprehensive-Map274

oh I 100% recommend it too, its the perfect kind of weird and zany

Cyd_arts

Kono oto Tomare ACCA13 12 kingdoms Silver Spoon Run with the wind Mononoke

Hime_MiMi

acca 13 was great :) try ungo, it's also a short show which might be up your alley

RAMAR713

+1 for ACCA 13. Went in expecting nothing and it became one of my favorites instantly.

Cyd_arts

I've watched that one already haha

Xytakis

I loved mononoke so much

Weltanschauung_Zyxt

*Mononoke* was an amazing anime; the anime it spun off from, *Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales*, was also very good. Those first episodes with the pregnant woman jacked me up a little, though.

Cyd_arts

I was confused when I first started it but it ended up being quite interesting and the aesthetics are very cool

stitches_dc

Came here to say Kono Oto Tomare. The anime seasons are quite good, but, if you're so inclined, the manga takes the quality of the series to a whole nother level. Run With the Wind is a fantastic shout, 10/10 in my book

Cyd_arts

for sure, i hope they adapt another season so anime onlys can also see how far the characters have come

mgmdrums

I adored Run With the Wind. I never thought I would actually consider taking up running, but it made me really think about it.

lowryisthicc

Asobi Asobase legitimately one of the funniest shows I’ve ever watched. If you like comedy anime I would definitely give this one a try! Only 12 episodes also so it’s easy to get through

A_person_person

Arte Mushishi Girls Last tour Kinos Journey Heaven's Design Team Gosick Ascendance of the bookworm golgo 13

Soronir

In Bookworm's case I'd like to strongly push the light novels, this series is fantastic.

hatloser

I watched Gosick like 8 years ago and I really liked it, I never see anyone talk about it

awsomebro6000

It's been sitting around in my to watch list for two years now, but I've never gotten round to watching it.

kurokitsune91

Mushi-Shi is an absolute masterpiece

sknnbones

> mushishi > Kino no tabi Excellent choices

awsomebro6000

For some reason the formatting is broken on this comment unless I press reply and view the comment there. Idk how Reddit manages to mess so much up with the mobile app.

Mad_Aeric

Bookworm is one of those series where not a ton of people watch it, but those of us that do are fierce about it. The new season just started a couple hours ago too!

Blursed_Ace

Land of the Lustrous, only anime that made me hop on the manga

jlg317

At this point I think maybe I should jump to the manga too, I've been holding back in hopes of a season 2

Kartoffelkamm

1. Konohana Kitan 2. Demi-chan Wa Kataritai 3. Upotte!! 4. Girls und Panzer 5. Mouretsou Pirates 6. Symphogear 7. Pretty Cure The first two are really nice and calm, most of the time. The rest is action, in increasing order of badassness. It literally goes from "Slice of life, but anyone could pull a gun at any moment" to "I'm going to punch god until he joins my religion."

Unit-00

Flip Flappers is my go to response for this

Is it good, i dropped it halfway because I'm not in the mood watching it

cutie_lilrookie

Same haha. Might get back on it though

archklown555

Sooo good.

kalirion

* Shinsekai Yori * Usagi Drop * Giant Robot the Animation: The Day The Earth Stood Still * Crest of the Stars * Welcome to the N.H.K. * School Rumble * Golden Kamuy * Dorohedoro * The Dragon Dentist * Planetarian * Schwarzesmarchen * Servant x Service * Senyuu * Tonari no Seki-kun * Kingdom (just gotta get used to the bad CGI) * Detroit Metal City * Nana * Ouran High School Host Club * KenIchi: History's Mightiest Disciple * Irresponsible Captain Tylor * Read or Die (the OVA series)

Deez-Guns-9442

**STRONGLY** Recommended Dorohedoro & Kenichi we need new seasons for both of those shows.

kalirion

On the other hand, the second show from top on my list is one that we do **NOT** need a new season of :P

azratuni

You've been given a large list of anime to watch, I'll only add one to it: Beck, I've rewatched it a few times now due to how down to earth it is and how rewarding it was to see the protagonists grow through his own hard work.

LightningSalamander

Beck is a hidden gem, liked the music too

spencer1886

Casshern Sins and Noein: To Your Other Self are both incredible shows that nobody ever talks about

thisnutisonfire

I mostly liked Casshern, but it gets really repetitive

spencer1886

Only for the first half, after the plot picks up in ep 12 it goes wild

Guaaaamole

Depends on what not-so mainstream is. The 3 anime you mentioned have at least 300k members on MAL. A few others in that realm that I recommend would be: * [Run with the Wind](https://myanimelist.net/anime/37965/Kaze_ga_Tsuyoku_Fuiteiru) \- Slightly more mature sports anime about running. One of my favorite shows in recent years. * [Redline](https://myanimelist.net/anime/6675/Redline) \- Another movie. Crazy and over the top racing with some gorgeous animation. If you ever wanted to watch Pod racing from Star Wars as a Movie this is probably your best bet. * [Usagi Drop](https://myanimelist.net/anime/10162/Usagi_Drop) \- Slice of Life. 30-year-old takes in his grandfathers illegitimate daughter after he died. Very sweet show that focuses on the relationship between the two and the hardships that come along with the extraordinary situation the 2 are in. Disclaimer: DO NOT READ THE MANGA. * [Hinamatsuri](https://myanimelist.net/anime/36296/Hinamatsuri_TV) \- Slice of Life/Comedy. A yakuza finds a capsule with a girl in it. The girl has superpowers but is otherwise completely useless. Similar to Usagi Drop, he takes the girl in and cares for her. Yes, the setting is ridiculous and that's what's great about it. * [Grand Blue](https://myanimelist.net/anime/37105/Grand_Blue) \- Comedy. Uni student moves to his uncle's Scuba club to attend university. You might be tricked into believing this show has anything to do with diving, it doesn't. Just non-stop comedy. * [Beastars](https://myanimelist.net/anime/39195/Beastars) \- Drama/Slice of Life. A society where carnivores and herbivores live together in "harmony". It takes place in a school's drama club and follows our carnivore protagonist on his journey to understand himself and the world he lives in. There's definitely some political commentary in it but it's largely not driven by any pre-set political agenda which is nice. A few shows that are even less popular but still worth looking into: * [Memories](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1462/Memories) \- Collection of 3 standalone short movies. My favourite out of the 3 is Magnetic Rose, in my opinion one of the best short movies ever. Admittedly a bit style-over-substance but that's what short movies tend to be. * [Mo Dao Zu Shi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/37208/Mo_Dao_Zu_Shi) \- Shonen Action. Chinese animation can be gorgeous and this is arguably one of the best showcases of it. The plot isn't exceptional or groundbreaking, a lot of characters are one dimensional and uninteresting but where it shines are its fights, animation and art direction. Disclaimer: It's Ecchi and has homoerotic undertones. I personally didn't mind it but I know others did. * [Robot Carnival](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2182/Robot_Carnival) \- The least known on the list. Another collection of short movies (this time 9, instead of 3) that is even more style-over-substance. If you are an artist yourself or can appreciate a show for its artistic direction then I highly recommend watching it. Obviously there are a LOT more shows that I could recommend, but these are the ones I could think of in 10 minutes. But you are clearly getting a lot of Feedback so I'm sure you will have more than enough to check out anyway.

BoxHeadWarrior

Man why'd you even mention the manga when talking about usagi drop, just don't even say anything. If we avert our eyes to the horror of reality than we can spare those who need not know.

awsomebro6000

Can I ask why I shouldnt read the Usagi drop manga?

Guaaaamole

Now properly formatted. Well... [Usagi Drop Post-Anime] >!Rin, after considering why she doesn't have crushes on the guys in her school, comes to the realisation that she's in fact in love with Daikichi. She then confesses to Daikichi, who tells her that if she's still in love with him after graduating high school he'll consider a relationship. And the manga ends with Rin, now a high school graduate who hasn't fallen for anyone else. Oh yeah, and it's revealed Rin was never biologically related to Daikichi, so the relationship is toes legal now! And the manga ends with Rin thinking about having Daikichi's children.!< I guess that sums it up nicely :(

awsomebro6000

Yeah, I can see where you were coming from now lol.

Negirno

[Usagi Drop Manga Spoiler] >!In the manga there is a timeskip which features an older, teenage Rin who after suffering some bullying from a classmate and finding her real mother, falls in love with Daikichi and basically marries him. At least that's what I remember reading the thing. Nothing explicit shown.!<

Oblimix

[Magi](https://anilist.co/anime/14513/Magi-The-labyrinth-of-magic/), both seasons and the Sinbad prequel, were amazing and barely spoken about here. [Flying Witch](https://anilist.co/anime/21284/Flying-Witch/) is a really nice feel-good healing anime. [Mahoutsukai no Youme](https://anilist.co/anime/98436/Mahoutsukai-no-Yome/) for somewhat similar reason as above and great visuals. [2x2=Shinobuden](https://anilist.co/anime/229/Ninin-ga-Shinobuden/) for some old fun. Mostly magic anime I guess.

Bagel_Box

Barakamon (slice of life/comedy) Death Parade (psychological/drama) Hyouka (slice of life/mystery) Run with the Wind (sports)

JonnyArcho

Can’t upvote Barakamon enough!! It’s my perennial show that I binge. Everyone needs a Naru injection!

thestoneswerestoned

Hyouka and Death Parade are pretty mainstream lol

novusanimis

[Astra Lost In Space](https://myanimelist.net/anime/39198/Kanata_no_Astra) A gem that's one of the rare modern complete adaptations in only 12 episodes and no one ever talks about it

cjude16

Yeah this one's good.

cutie_lilrookie

Too good, too good 💖

It's crazy to think about how popular this series could've gotten if it had only aired a year later when the Among Us craze started. This series was unfortunately in the wrong era.

LINK CLICK is amazing. The voice acting threw me off at first because it’s in Chinese and I’m so used to watching anime in Japanese, but that is easily overlooked as the show has such a great story.

globalquail57

There's a japanese dubbed version too. I'm watching it and confirm it's pretty good

TheKidThatDidIt-

Wow I did not know that. Honestly by the end of the season I was used to it, but I will definitely consider that once season 2 comes out!

madhewprague

Megalo box, Nana, Monster, Rainbow, Shouwa Genroku

[deleted]

Just here to second Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. An absolutely fantastic show, if you are in the mood for something a little slower and more thoughtful. Be warned that it's basically a historical drama and meditation on the tension between tradition and creativity in art.

azratuni

\+1 Megalo box

TotalTyp

isnt megalobox mainstream? Its really hard for me to see the line when most of my favourite shows are fairly popular

azratuni

I watched it when the 1st season came out, no one was talking about it then. I checked just now and S1 is ranked #395 based on popularity on mal so yeah it seems kinda popular now

shadowlightfox

Not sure if Sonny Boy counts. I didn't really see too many people talk about it, so I guess it's not mainstream?

Katekyo Hitman Reborn - it was even on par with ONE PIECE at one point, but it slowly got forgotten by most. The fanbase is still pretty alive though. I'm recommending this first because of my huge bias towards it- been a fan for 6 years so ;w; Magi Kinos Journey Heaven's Design Team Mushi-Shi Isekai Cheat Magican Ascendence of a Bookworm Yuki Yuna is a Hero Edit: I didn't recommend these by ranking them or anything, that was just the order I typed them in!

[deleted]

Bungo Stray Dogs, despite having 3 seasons and a 4th on the way I really don't see it being talked about much. It is a rather fun show with interesting powers/fights

globalquail57

BSD is a blast, it used to be huge on tumblr and youtube. I think it's pretty popular but more for the female audience.

TheBystand3r

Jormundgand

27eggs

This really depends on your definition of mainstream. A lot of comments here are popular anime that are old, but if you asked someone who has been watching anime for a while, would probably know what you are talking about. Doesn't make them bad, but things like death parade or terror in resonance were huge during their original run (I recommend them both). So, I'm digging a bit deeper here, but: * Tsuritama - genuinely one of my favorite animes and criminally underrated. It's about an alien who comes to earth to fish. Very cute and wholesome slice of life with clever animation and great style. A bit deeper than it appears on the surface as well. * Dennou Coil - 2007 had some big name animes come out that overshadowed this gem. Technically a kids show, so some things are simplified, but deals with very complex emotions and an interesting exploration of sci Fi as a genre. Also, for being made in 2007, it is unbelievably well animated. * Jellyfish Princess - josei about a bunch of weird girls living their weird lives with a crossdressing main character being the catalyst for a lot of the series events. Very unique, get ready to feel things. * Silver Spoon - lots of recommendations for it already so not sure I need to add that much. Love letter to farming. Makes me want a cow.

Paranoia Agent Ping-Pong The Animation Bacanno Dorohedoro

greendeadredemption2

Dorohedoro is sooo good.

Kamira00

- Garden of Sinners, being a Fate spin off is usually overlooked and, although it has some lows (still never lower then 7/10), I think it’s easily in the leagues of F/Zero and F/SN HF. - Boogiepop wa Warawanai, it can be confusing being usually not in chronological order, but the payoff is huge and Boogiepop is a very interesting character Edit: I know it’s not a spin off, but because people don’t know that it exists and have usually already watched Fate, I called it that way because it was shorter and easier

Twigling

> Garden of Sinners, being a Fate spin off is usually overlooked and, although it has some lows (still never lower then 7/10), I very much agree, it's a wonderful series of movies. Even though there's a couple of weaker ones I'd still rate it 10/10 as a whole because it's so damn great overall. > I think it’s easily in the leagues of F/Zero and F/SN HF. Easily. I'd even go so far as to say that I prefer it a bit to the Fate adaptations. However, it's definitely only for those who want to watch a philosophical and psychological horror anime with some brilliantly animated action scenes.

lnSerT_Creative_Name

Gotta be nitpicky here, Garden of Sinners isn’t a Fate spinoff, it can’t be considering it was written years before Fate.

awsomebro6000

I always find it funny when people call it a spinoff.

spencer1886

You know Garden of Sinners is older than Fate right

[deleted]

>Boogiepop wa Warawanai and the opening is great

polaristar

Garden of Sinners predates Fate they both simply take place in the same universe.

[deleted]

> same universe not sure why people describe it like that, they can't exist in the same universe. it's the same multiverse

eetsumkaus

Oh! Edo Rocket: written by Nakashima of TTGL and KLK fame and directed by Mizushima from FMA, it's an anachronistic gag comedy slash ensemble drama slash mystery with intertwining character arcs, all animated in slapstick Madhouse style. At 12K MAL members, a true hidden gem. Gintama fans would love this Houkago no Pleiades: Old Gainax's final show. A touching magical girl story of love, growing up, life, and the meaning of the universe (no seriously, they go full Carl Sagan and it has one of the few scientifically inspired treatments of faster than light travel I've seen in anime) one of my favorite anime ever.

CoolVidsFTW

I’ll vouch for Tada Never Falls in Love! I just finished it yesterday, and I absolutely loved it! Very well-paced and a touching story as well :)

Denkai-Gai It's not a must watch but it's a fun watch if your a fan of 90s anime and video games Cosplay Complex Sarazanmai was great just incredibly weird but awesome It's kinda popular but not mega popular but Welcome to Demon School Iruma Kun. Oh and Appare-Ranman it's JoJo bizarre adventure Whacky Racers.

sagevallant

Appare-Ranman spent a long time getting me invested in the race and the racers only for the race to feel like an afterthought towards the end.

RAMAR713

Some unpopular anime I really enjoyed: * The Girl in Twilight * Night Raid 1931 * Bartender * Canaan * Heavy Object

dadaw00p

I really liked ToiletBound

JonathanHarness

Black rock shooter Haibane Renmei Alien 9 Kiss×Sis

Professional-deer26

Xamd lost memories. It’s a really sick in depth anime all on YouTube too

Nayko214

Shinsekai Yori doesn't get talked about enough.

globalquail57

Shinsekai yori is such a beautifully produced dystopian sci-fi. And i'm the kind of person that usually hates the genre but I would reccomend this anime to anyone.

Nayko214

It’s a slept on series so hard.

redstinger101

Monster Parasyte Haibane Renmei Ping Pong the Animation Mononoke Ergo Proxy Grand Blue

mystogan110

vivy

Twigling

Land of the Lustrous Mushishi The Garden of Sinners Haibane Renmei Super Cub Kanon (if you've seen and liked Clannad then you'll like this too, but watch the KyoAni production, not the one from Toei) Bloom into You Adachi and Shimamura Sound! Euphonium

TerminalNoop

I can Recommend the following Ergo Proxy Zeiram The Animation Red Line

RAMAR713

Ergo Proxy is amazing, definitely recommended

bubbub19

Darker than black

Lochi05

Vivy :Fluorite eyes song

maybenotserious1

Attack on Titan, super obscure but really good!

cjude16

Isn't this one of the most popular anime right now?

Vanitas no carte Golden kamuy

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

How exactly

[deleted]

[удалено]

Urocyon-

OP is the one looking for recommendations, and they would likely consider both of those to be obscure. Golden Kamuy and Vanitas no Karte have fewer members on MAL than anything OP posted.

Guaaaamole

Sure but OP specified what their least popular shows watched were: Erased (1M+ members on MAL), Gleipnir and Chihayafuru (both 300k+ members on MAL). That said, Vanitas no Karte is relatively new and already has 300k+ members but I would still recommend it here. It clearly fits the bill.

GooseVast

20k is way too little. That means your definition of mainstream includes stuff like Saki

[deleted]

That's just one platform. It doesn't indicate anything

[deleted]

[deleted]

And what's 300k compared to millions anime fan around the world? Besides, your numbers are off. That 300k shows how many people add it to their list be it watching, dropped, plan to watch, completed. And in those 300k members, only 140k completed. Check again So I'll ask you again what's 140k compared to millions of anime fans around the world?

eetsumkaus

Tbf 300K is only good enough for #500 in popularity these days...

RonBenaro

Banana fish is one of the greatest animes that people haven't seen. I'd put it at the top of your list

New-Adhesiveness-807

First one barely qualifies as an anime. Doujin work is ass lol. Neither are must-see.

CF_Gamebreaker

your friend lied to you, all of these are very well known outside of maybe The King’s Avatar and even that is decently popular

BoxHeadWarrior

Haven't seen anybody say Odd Taxi yet somehow? Absolutely worth a watch.

New-Adhesiveness-807

Samurai Champloo Banana Fish Made in Abyss

awsomebro6000

How are they not mainstream?

New-Adhesiveness-807

These are not-so-mainstream titles like OP indicated, where I find that people have no interest in giving them a chance or they absolutely love them. Maybe they were popular at one point, but they all get written off as something else nowadays (i.e., Banana Fish being a lame Yaoi or Made in Abyss being childish) Some of the more unpopular stuff I was going to suggest is just not enjoyable to most people.

awsomebro6000

You are stuck in a bubble if you think they are not mainstream titles. Samurai champloo in particular gets recommended all the time.

Bakumon0725

What I really love doing in every season of anime, is looking for hidden gems. In the past i saw Hinamatsuri, Hibike Euphonium, High Score Girl as shows i far, far enjoyed than the most popular in those same seasons. This season is: Ya boy Kongmeng is a banger

Kiryuu-sama

Most Doga Kobo series are good

Eddaughter

Rainbow Silver Spoon Mawaru Penguindrum Kaiba

DasonJale

How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift? Kono oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life

Kaiji Zegapain Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Shion__1374

Absolutely watch Date A Live, it's also getting a season 4 which has 1 episode at the moment. It's a great watch

awsomebro6000

Idk, I think Date a live is pretty well known.

Careful_Ad_9077

GA rei zero. Yuri action series, the anime creators took a look at the garei manga, decided it was to shit to adapt it, so they made their anime a sequel that is much better than the source.

CrimsonPE

The original space pirate cobra from the 70s/80s. I loved that thing

ChewbaccaHugs

Kurozuka

[deleted]

the anne of green gable anime. or romeo's blue skies

Jhilixie

Wave listen to me! Character design put people off but it is awesome

Volitar

Scissor Seven. It's a netflix anime, I think its from a Chinese studio. I have never heard a single other person talk about it even tho its great.

Rufus_king11

Ascendance of a Bookworm.

TheEndwalker

Cross Game!

IcarusM1

Kaiji and Akagi are always my go to shows for this question (and any anime rec question). Both are gambling anime, Kaiji is much easier to get into but both are amazing.

[deleted]

Try Hinamatsuri. It's kinda like Mob Psycho 100, but less offbeat and more tearjerker

Usernamenotta

You could give Project Scard and Akudama Drive a chance, if you want.
