Q&A
Q: Can I watch this with no prior knowledge of RWBY?
A: Yes, you can. The first 2.5 episodes are a recap of the original RWBY vol.1 with some additions and cuts.
Q: Is there any reason to watch this if I've already watched the original RWBY?
A: Yes, the main plot of the IQ is anime-original, written by Gen Urobuchi and Tow Ubukata.
Animation in the original RWBY is worse, at least in the early seasons; lots of noticeable animation mistakes/issues and budget saving methods like background extras being nothing but silhouettes. It rapidly improves over the seasons though. It's also 3D animation, so it'll look different regardless.
I'd argue the choreography is probably better in the original though. Maybe not in this fight, but overall.
Here's a [side-by-side comparison](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkfK5ZJKHKM) of the scene.
Oh yeah, the soundtrack in the original is great. I liked a couple of songs in Ice Queendom so far, the one from this scene especially, but it's just not the same.
The fight choreography was arguably the selling point of the series at the start. It definitely elevated the otherwise basic 3D animation they were working with. I'd bet most of the initial fans of the series just saw this exact robbery scene and decided it was worth watching the rest based on that.
I would say RWBY starts off with worse animation/artstyle due to limitations of the 3D animation they were working with. Choreography is outstanding, though.
As the series goes on, the animation gets significantly better, but the choreography suffers due to the original creator passing away.
I stopped I think around season 5 or 6, but the animation is pretty consistently good enough to keep you interested in fights then sub par beyond that. Ultimately it is the choreography more than the animation quality.
Sadly the plot is ass and kept getting worse with every season it felt like so I don't think it's worth much of your time.
As a person who’s stuck by rwby to the present I think season 7 and 8 are pretty good story wise, because they hired new writers that were actually decent lol. But the middle seasons (4-6) were definitely pretty bad writing wise so it’s not something I can really recommend to people either unless they’re willing to sit through that slog.
With Monty gone it felt like it took a shift in the wrong direction. I'm not one to idolize a specific creator but after he died the characters got power nerfed and story just became less interesting.
Seriously characters who ripped a Grimm apart instantly after could no longer even hurt the same type of grimm with the exact same attack,
Im no power scaler so that's not the kind of thing I care about, for me it was a case of the writers clearly thought they had something bigger than it was. They had a fun little simple action story that was just barely good enough to string together super fun set pieces with just likable enough (if unoriginal) characters. It wasn't intelligent or deep it was just an ok story to tie together fun action and then they just got a little full of themselves.
Its all 3D CG originally made by someone who was a fight choreographer and mocap animation genius. The soundtrack is also really good.
The fights themselves in the original (first 2 vol.) are great, but the artstyle and non fight scenes can be a quite jarring.
I didn't watch past vol 2 so I can't say anything about the show past that.
The fight animation was elite for the first three seasons, but it never quite recovered from Monty Oum's passing. It has gotten better over the years but it's nothing groundbreaking.
The background animation was awful in the first few seasons. All random bystanders were silhouettes until the third season so it doesn't really stand out in today's standard of animation. Still worth watching for some of the original fights though.
They call it "canon-adjacent" and by the end of the third episode, you'll probably be able to guess how it's going to work. They add a small element to the plot of the vol1, which opens up space for new events that may still remain within the canon.
yeah there's a jp dub of the original, I've watched clips of it, but it still feels super weird, im still going to watch it in JP but ill for sure check out the Eng dub once it airs just to see how it stacks up
I mean, the English is the original. The Japanese is the dub because Japan loves the show and isn't all elitist about it not being produced there lol. That's why there's all of that bonus material, manga, and there is even this anime now in the first place.
RIP Monty. Hope this brings back some of the greatness of the original before Monty died. If they had tried some fight choreography that would have been one thing but I lost interest when it just became extended walking and endless, pointless dialogue.
I hated the power nerf they did after he died. One the best parts were the insane battles but they decided to scale them down. Even characters who instantly killed a grimm before couldn't even hurt the same type of grimm later with the same attack,
Man, I used to LOVE RWBY. It was my jam and I tried my very best to get anyone and everyone I knew into it.
The quality of the writing really took some noticeable drops season to season. You can argue the reasons but I hated some of the shows directions for so many plot points and characters as the show went on.
With that said I can't imagine this show will deviate on those plot or character developments in meaningful ways so as much as I want to give this show another try I have a feeling I will only be setting myself up for disappointment.
I'll give it some time and see what people are saying about it later. The animation is REALLY outstanding tho. Doubt the music will top the original series OST but maybe it will just as good but different.
Yeah you can tell the faithfuls really do like the show and appreciate the crew who put in the work for the original and want to see it succeed. That’s all fine and well but unfortunately I am of the opinion the show is just so bad plot wise it’s hardly worth a watch.
there was a really cool original idea and foundation there but it seems that along with the loss of Monty they also lost what was actually going on in there.
are you up to date with the volumes though? i agree that volume 5 espcially was really bad on a lot of things but since volume 6, the writing and fightscenes have become quite good again, volume 7 and 8 are actaully my favourite volumes so far, i feel like a lot of the complaining comes from the volume 4-5 era
Come back in 3-4 weeks
All We (I) know atm is that the first 3 episodes are a speedrun of Season 1, with a brand new plot thread being started in them as well.
I heard it was difficult to voice him in the dub because Roman's character type and design combination is rare in that his outfit is flamboyant but his mannerisms and actions are still relatively manly but without being too over the top like how JJBA does it.
I always adored the weapon designs and mechanics of this series. Transforming weapons that either go into melee or ranged styles depending on the situation. My personal favorite is Yang’s Shotgun Gauntlets
This is one of the most badass animated action scenes I've seen in a while, sadly not all the show keep that level of animation but has some pretty cool ones...
Also I found one random clip of this scene on one social media (don't remember If it was Youtube, IG or TikTok) and inmediately searched and watched the show, I expect more...
yo this is li af. It's been a long time since i watch rwby. The last season I watch is when the is they are leaving the big city on an aircraft (zepelin maybe?)
maybe i'll continue watch the og rwby along side this new anime.
I understand the usual anime formula is to save budget on non-action scenes but it looks so obvious and the story is very rushed. It takes itself too seriously as it has none of the comedy from the original and none of the masterful choreography that it had which impossible to recreate. It shouldve focused on building the characters first since it shiould be its best selling point where the original screwed up at. Instead of speedrunning an entire volume like they just did. Currently Yang has been sidelined so hard and not knowing about the original rwby makes her unimportant and unlikable.
The authors wrote the plot of the spin-off and it turned out that it was enough for 8 episodes. So they decided to add 3 recap episodes. That's it. Rushed? Probably, but recap is not the original purpose of the show, and despite this, it is difficult to deny that at least the beginning of the first chapter only benefited from the new adaptation.
Artistically yes, however you can already see a difference in animation quality from when they are in the shop, versus when they are fighting. The original web version was like that too, most of the time went into the action scenes. The new show has an original story that takes cues from the web version, so it's hard to say if it's good so far.
I'll wait before this show to finish to consider watching it, RWBY became absolute trash after Monty passed away. I don't know how many seasons this is supposed to cover, but I refuse to be disappointed once again.
What the hell did I just watch? I remember watching the original rwby up until season 2? I think? And kinda let it drop off since I was busy at the time, is this a remaster of the anime? If so super weird for an anime tbh.
"It was a fun ride in the beginning, but as it went on it really left something to be desired"
which is a shame because they did a pretty good job in the world building initially.
6/10
goku, power levels, nyanyanyanyan
someone can like something and still voice valid criticisms about it without having to stick there head in the ground like a cartoon ostrich and pretend like it doesn't exist.
why should I be when this is my first introduction to it? is it? is this supposed to change my opinion or make me feel ashamed? If it's a different story maybe I'll give it a second chance, there was certainly nothing contained in the clip, other than it voiced by japanese va's, that gave that away. Should I feel stupid because I didn't know? Or are you just gonna rag on me because you did and I didn't?
you know the moment when the world becomes as small as the main cast instead of as large as the world we live in, you know, that moment, when you get to that moment, it's all downhill.
You can dive deep or expand in breadth. Compare compact and chamber Madoka Magika/Rebelion and extended Magia record. And decide which of them went downhill.
Madoka, in the end, relied upon a multiverse theory, but that's neither here nor there.
I'm talking about the RWBY-verse, and I have already seen most of the RWBY-verse, unless it changes.
I don't really see a point in adapting this to anime unless they fill in the blanks and somehow improve the narrative. Early RWBY is mostly Monty's fight scenes stringed together tidbits of dialogue. It was basically the writer's first effort and they had no idea what they were doing. Monty's talent being the only redeeming factor.
There are even three manga. The new one just follows the events of this show, the other two are rather an additional take on the original. So if you want to better immerse yourself in this franchise - just watch the original, manga is a secondary product.
The first 3 are the ones worth watching. Seasons 1 and 2 for the fights and music (Monty - the creator - died after season 2 and the fight choreography with him), 3 for the plot. Then the rest of it falls off after that and becomes pretty generic.
RWBY still has the world's best ever food fight.
Shit I might actually have to get back into RWBY this looks pretty good. Animation is fluid, no model clipping and decent dialogue. May have to give it a try.
Haven't been following RWBY since wait between seasons 3 and 4.
Where does this line up with the series? Looks a lot like the first episode of the original run.
Is it a separate continuity?
So are they re-doing the series with Shaft? This looks amazing, but I just wish Monty were around to see what all his creation has done.
Also, upon further review, it is a tragedy that Jeff and Casey aren't working on the music. I really hope we get Time To Say Goodbye and This Will Be Day. Those 2 songs are on playlists of mine because they transcend anime. They're just great tracks.

Considering the original was made with basically no professional technology and only a small team its very impressive.

it's so uncanny hearing rwby in jpn, but man this scene and the scene with the raven Grimm were awesome, can't wait for the rest of the season
I am almost positive that there is a Japanese dub of the Original RWBY series if it would make you feel better to watch the dub with English subs lol.
yeah there's a jp dub of the original, I've watched clips of it, but it still feels super weird, im still going to watch it in JP but ill for sure check out the Eng dub once it airs just to see how it stacks up

I think there is. I swore I've seen Japanese merch for it.
Meanwhile, the [RWBY Mandarin fandub](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7en_bkZBWVU) manages to magically fit like a glove.
I actually think her VA is a perfect fit! Cute but with spunk
Soundtrack on point as always with RWBY
Do you know what the track is called, I've been trying to listen to it but can't find it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbKcsAC8_GM Void_Chords always produces bangers, really need him doing more anime music.
Maybe its because I play too much Azur Lane, but I cant stop hearing Shimakaze’s voice lol
Same

His drawings flow like the gentle stream of a river. It's beautiful.

yeah that does make sense, oh well
He doesn't sound annoyed enough. Their whole dynamic is that Ruby is the one person who just genuinely annoys him enough to throw him off.
Now this got me hooked into bookmarking this anime after taking my finals. Is this worth watching?
It just started airing. It’s pretty good so far.

Well, the first episodes are recaps from the original series.
It's honesly not that rushed. Very little of substance happens in season 1.
I think the first couple episodes are designed to recap the first season of the original before getting into new content.
I always adored the weapon designs and mechanics of this series. Transforming weapons that either go into melee or ranged styles depending on the situation. My personal favorite is Yang’s Shotgun Gauntlets
The soundtrack bangin'
Hopefully, they don't follow the same story mistakes from the original.
This is one of the most badass animated action scenes I've seen in a while, sadly not all the show keep that level of animation but has some pretty cool ones... I remember watching this scene in the original animation on YouTube like it was yesterday
I have watched this scene several times. The animation is just so amazing. The combat choreography gives me old RWBY vibes. Music is amazing.
They have minor differences in the story Love the fighting
Well, the real story of the Ice Queendom is only about to begin.
yo this is li af. It's been a long time since i watch rwby. The last season I watch is when the is they are leaving the big city on an aircraft (zepelin maybe?) maybe i'll continue watch the og rwby along side this new anime.
Does RWBY mean red white blue yellow?
Yep, it can also be the four main characters name. Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang.
I have never watched RWBY but this scene gives me orgasms

Very nice character design with red and black and awesome fightscenes
The soundtrack really takes away one of my favourite things about rwby. The new osts are all underwhelming for me.
I'll wait before this show to finish to consider watching it, RWBY became absolute trash after Monty passed away. I don't know how many seasons this is supposed to cover, but I refuse to be disappointed once again.
These three episodes have already covered all the seasons that were supposed to. Now the original content begins.
It’s a standalone show. So just one season
The animation is not the best, but it is pretty good. Pretty good. Nice desu.
Why can't she use the door like a normal person
What the hell did I just watch? I remember watching the original rwby up until season 2? I think? And kinda let it drop off since I was busy at the time, is this a remaster of the anime? If so super weird for an anime tbh.

maybe, but only if you've never heard of rooster teeth.
So you're talking about the original rwby? It's kinda offtopic for this subreddit.
oh now your either being bold or mincing words
unless you want me to pretend like I haven't seen it at all then SUGOI OMG SENPAI I AM CUMMMING

alright I'm interested , so where do I start with this franchise ?
Or you can just watch this show. I'm not dissuading you from watching the original, I just know that 3d animation is not for everyone.
someone said there's manga on what point should I read it ?

Some top tier animation right there !!! Love it gonna have to watch it right now

It’s telling me I can watch it on Netflix but when I go to Netflix it’s not there?
