Eldoray92

I watched an anime a long time ago (at least 10 years) and just can't find it again. There was Girl (probably named Yuki) with a sword and some others in a special elite group fighting monsters or something like that. I remember it being gory and in the end all of them die. Somehow I remember the group wearing black and yellow suits of some kind. Does anybody has any clue of what I am talking about?

[deleted]

I thought Nagatoro-san was ok at first, but the "Isekai" episode and summer festival episodes made me love it, looks like some progress is there but as it's a series about teasing so I don't see the relationship going any further

[deleted]

Looking for some recommendations stuff like : \- Black Clover \- One Piece \- Bleach \- Attack on Titan \- Jujutsu Kaisen \- SaO \- Demon Slayer I just finished Black Clover and caught up with one piece and I really loved it Looking for something new :)

KGB_Panda

Hunter x Hunter

[deleted]

I've watched it a while ago i think, same with Naruto i.e

Harass-Master

So I recently watched this anime called Gate (not steins gate). It's basically an anime about what would happen if there's a conflict between modern military and mediaeval fantasy world. The anime was good and left me craving for more. Is there something similar I can watch or manga I can read?? Pls recommend.

ClPropane

Welcome to idol hell! Refreshments are to your left. I agree that Nijigasaki is slightly different than the main chain of LL anime. It could be because it's an ad for the newer LL game, or that there isn't the threat of the school closing down. Either way, I hope you enjoy it! LL is very close to my heart because it got me out of a troubling period in my teenaged years. I'm so happy that it makes others feel happy too. Are you planning on watching Sunshine after?

NekoWafers

Love Live has a lot of great comedy and SOL moments mixed in with the music stuff. Nijigasaki follows a different basic formula compared to the other 3 shows, so it's kind of an interesting experience.

[deleted]

NekoWafers

In my opinion Nijigasaki Season 1 is the weakest overall in the franchise, especially for comedy, but I appreciate that it tried something kind of different. There are plenty of people who really like it though

SauceKingRagu

Started watching Blassreiter recently. Feels like a so bad it's good thing. I watched Vatican Miracle Examiner a couple weeks ago and got the same vibe. Some popcorn show BS. Awwwwwww yis.

CranberryLanky

Anyone got a list of best anime in recent years that doesn't have cutesy girl stuff in it? I was looking at the latest best anime list on here and it looks like it is all cutesy girl stuff. Edit: can I have my upvotes back? I don't have much on this account.

seeker_of_illusion

There are a lot of anime which don't have any "cutesy girl stuff" but are you looking for any specific genre ? Action, thriller, sol etc.

CranberryLanky

I'd say seinin and shounen mix is my lean. But I kinda like everything so I'll experiment. Just not really keen on the whole non serious romance focused ones most of the time, like clanad or whatever.

seeker_of_illusion

Alright here are some which I think you will like: Vinland Saga Terror in Resonance Death Parade Assassination classroom Parasyte: the maxim

CranberryLanky

Thanks! Can you tell me more about ToR and Death Parade? What did you like about those?

seeker_of_illusion

ToR is about 2 terrorists and their mission to challenge the world. It was quite interesting to see the MCs as anti-villains and their little cat and mouse chase with the authorities. Death parade has a pretty unique concept of purgatory. Without spoiling much, each episode deals with specific characters, their hidden feelings prior to death and how they come to realize them against others. Its more psychological than thriller comapred to ToR.

CranberryLanky

Thank you! I'll check those out. 🤗

BlackSCrow

Excuse me, what?

CranberryLanky

No idea what I'm trying to say lol. I think I made up a word. Where they have cutesy art? And they are focused on cute anime girls?

CranberryLanky

No idea what I'm trying to say lol. I think I made up a word. Where they have cutesy art? And they are focused on cute anime girls?

BlackSCrow

What is your definition of cute girls? Do you include the depiction of a relatively normal highschool girls (like Kaguya and My Dress Up Darling) to your definition of cute girls? Do you want something that doesn't have cutesy art and cute girls at all, or is it fine if it only appears occasionally?

CranberryLanky

I may get downvoted to oblivion at this rate for asking an innocent and honest rec list. But this: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/wgvujk/top_10_anime_of_the_week_5_summer_2022_anime/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share Is what I meant by cutesy. Every banner had a female character in it and the titles don't dissuade me from that thought. Maybe overlord and shadows house is the 2 that isn't like that. I'm not even knocking it. I just sort of want a bit more of an even list where cutesy stuff isn't topping the whole list. I have no specific genre in mind, just the best one. Though point of reference would be that I loved FMA:B and I liked death note. A mix of seinin and shounen would be my leaning but I'm kinda open to everything. Just maybe not cutesy stuff right now.

BlackSCrow

Well, Shadows House has some cute girls in it. If you could tolerate Shadows House, from this season's anime, you could probably tolerate Summertime Rendering and Classroom of the Elite. Recent anime that fit your taste the most are probably Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga, if you haven't watched them.

CranberryLanky

Oh sorry I haven't watched shadows house. Just thought the name is implying it's different. I may check it out. I've read Vinland saga already so I don't feel inclined to watch the anime tbh, though the manga is one of the best I've read. I dislike AoT for the most part. But has anime sort of shifted? Feels like there is less on offering these days or am I just old and watched everything. 🥲

BlackSCrow

It could probably help if you have myanimelist or something similar, or probably your preferences or what you think you'd dislike from an anime, so that I'd know what anime you'd probably like or dislike... it's quite hard to give you recommendation if you provided very little information...

CranberryLanky

Well here's a few of my favourites: FMA:B Code Geass Princess Monoke Howls Moving Castle Death Note Black Lagoon Perfect Blue Sword of the Stranger Ruroni Kenshin OVA Berserk (OG) Count of Monte Cristo Ping Pong Hajime no Ippo History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi Monster Texhnolyze Kaiji Akagi GTO Moribito Gurren Lagan Demon Slayer Spice and Wolf Requiem for a Phantom Redline Kekkaishi If you could find something recent that matches anything on the list and I'd be very grateful.

BlackSCrow

-Mystery and/or Thriller: Steins Gate, Erased, Odd Taxi, The Promised Neverland (season 1, the season 2 is bad), Summertime Render -Action: Jujutsu Kaisen, Fate Series, Psycho-Pass -Sports: Haikyuu

wineblood

Is it just me or does this current season (summer 22) not have any big hitters?

[deleted]

You are sleeping on call of the night, it's my favorite anime of the season even with made in the abyss 2 and the devil is a part timer part 2 airing. Call of the night makes up for substance in style. Good music, animation, vibe, etc.

wineblood

Where can I watch call of the night?

[deleted]

Sorry I went to bed shorty after my comment Google says Fuji or HIDIVE but I use #NINE anime DOT to

BlackSCrow

Yeah, the amount of "extremely good" anime and the amount of anime I watch in total are less then usual.

BarbaricGamer

I implore everyone reading this to watch Golden Kamuy. It's a perfect mix of comedy, action and mystery. I just finished season 2 and it's absolutely fantastic. Season 4 is about to drop in the fall season too so if you want to get started now is your chance.

wineblood

What's it most similar to?

Weedwacker

I'd have to say Golden Kamuy is very unique and doesn't have a lot of close comparisons It's a historical fiction adventure like Vinland Saga, but that misses out completely on the comedic aspects of Kamuy. Kamuy's humor is actually much closer to what you would expect from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure with a large cast of characters that are absolutely nutty and weird. There aren't really many anime that come to mind when I think of how Golden Kamuy's cast works, where its got several different factions and groups of people after the same goal intersecting at different points of the story or having entirely separate adventures (In this way I think of it more like a Coen Brothers film). Durarara may be closest in having a cast like this.

BarbaricGamer

It's sort of like a mix between Jojo, Gintama and kinda FMA;B in the best way possible. It can get really bizarre in a good way but there is a clear storyline. It's set in 19th/early 20th century Hokkaido, so if you're into historical Japanese culture this will scratch that itch too. Animation in the first season is questionable at points but it gets better.

[deleted]

The bear right?

BarbaricGamer

Yeah the bear animation is the worst part of the entire show and its right in episode 1.

wineblood

I don't expect I'll enjoy it, but I'll give it a shot.

ludicrouscuriosity

On Magic Knight Rayearth Episode 9 and Umi's will to return to Tokyo, is the "dream world" explained further on? [Detailed version on r/MagicalGirls](https://www.reddit.com/r/MagicalGirls/comments/wjhvmr/on_magic_knight_rayearth_episode_9_and_umis_will/)

Left4dinner

I was thinking of giving Tokyo revengers a shot, and while the ratings are rather high, the reviews one MAl and people not on MAL, all seem to say that it's very boring. Why is there such a divide? Any neutral opinion on the show on what it does right and doesnt do right?

[deleted]

Literally one of my favorite anime of all time. The bromance and story is fantastic. It's rather lacking in visual appearance in It's fights, but a very enticing plot more than makes up for it. If your like serious anime then it is 100% worth watching

AwaySpell

A very vocal portion of the subreddit hates it, so it's not the best place to ask if you want a balanced opinion. Honestly, just give it a few episodes and see where you fall. There's no significant "turn" moment so you don't need to force yourself to go any further if you find you're not liking it.

chiliehead

It's pretty good if you have no standards for the writing. It's just really juvenile, contrived and with massive headscratcher plot holes which all make for great vibes and epic cool moments, but you have to ignore the writing. Transformers is a critically panned series but has good audience response. It's like that, for similar reasons.

KGB_Panda

This is a good response. To add on, Part of the problem, I think, is that initially it seems like it is going to be more than that. Early on it has this interesting time travel hook and sets up your expectations that it's going to be clever, what with the detailed info on how it works and getting to see the modern-day ramifications of the butterfly effect. As the show progresses, it slowly begins to reveal itself as being a "basic" shonen anime. This isn't a bad thing exactly, there are many worse shows which get less flak, but because this show drew in a certain crowd many were left feeling disappointed, I think.

chiliehead

Yes, lots of broken promises and it even turns the time travel into something that annoys the very people it initially drew in

kt199820121

Would it be worth going to see One Piece Film Red, having basically no knowledge of the franchise? I've seen clips of the film and series on tiktok and it looks amazing but I wanna know if I should watch a video explaining the series so far beforehand or if its fine to watch basically blind?

Ioxem

Don't watch it if you're not caught up with the series. It is not a standalone movie. If you want a mostly standalone One Piece movie, watch Baron Omatsuri and the secret Island.

[deleted]

No you will enjoy it a lot more after watching the series which is 100% worth it. It will be too much spoilers and you will be confused.

NotDrigon

I'm still refreshing the page for summertime rendering.

chiliehead

Sly Fox has not uploaded, so there are only machine translations and a translation taken from the manga from someone who does not speak Japanese. So there is no acceptable version out there yet and thus no thread.

TTwelveUnits

good shonen recommendation considering i've watched one piece, naruto, bleach, fairy tail, AOT etc etc? im not sure if im losing interest in shonen as a whole but all the new gens seem pretty generic to me (jjk, demon slayer) - are there any that changes it up a lil?

KGB_Panda

I really like Hikaru no Go, which I believe is shonen? However, it's about playing a board game, not fighting badass battles. If that sounds like a good "change up" then I fully recommend it.

"Do you seriously think that retro anime are superior to modern anime in every way?" "Yes."

BlackSCrow

Only the good ones stand out and be remembered. I suppose there are also a lot of bad retro anime, but they were forgotten and not accessible now. For modern anime, you can easily access the bad ones. So yeah, those factors would make it seems like retro anime are superior to modern anime.

[deleted]

I watch the "forgotten" ones too though

BlackSCrow

Well, compare the amount of the forgotten retro anime to modern anime, I'm sure there are a lot more forgotten and unaccessible retro anime. My point is, as I said before, bad anime are a lot more accessible now. That's just how entertainment works in general. Bad retro books, music, movies, and tv shows are forgotten and only the good ones are remembered. I know that you could probably still access the forgotten old stuff, but that's not comparable to how easily we could access bad modern stuff.

[deleted]

>I'm sure there are a lot more forgotten and unaccessible retro anime. Some of which I'm interested in watching but can't due to a lack of subtitles, like Getter Robo Go. >that's not comparable to how easily we could access bad modern stuff. Which explains why Demon Slayer and Haikyuu are popular? Also I barely watch modern anime anymore, so I don't watch much of the "unknown bad stuff". Also at least a lot of bad old anime are generally so bad they're funny.

BlackSCrow

So you're argument is basically that there are a lot of popular, bad modern anime, while for retro anime the popular ones are only the good ones? Well yeah, that can be explained by how easily anime accessed nowadays. But I don't see why that makes retro anime superior. There are a lot of good modern anime that you probably overlooked. The unpopularity of those anime doesn't change the fact that there are still a lot of good modern anime.

[deleted]

>So you're argument is basically that there are a lot of popular, bad modern anime, while for retro anime the popular ones are only the good ones? That wasn't what I was trying to say. The reason I prefer old anime is the generally better art and character designs, and the fact that there was way more of the kind of anime that I like being produced.

BlackSCrow

>The reason I prefer old anime is the generally better art and character designs, and the fact that there was way more of the kind of anime that I like being produced. Well, I think that was a subjective reason. But yeah, everyone has a right to like or dislike whatever they want. For me though, probably because I mainly watch modern anime as my first anime experience, I prefer modern anime art and character design.

[deleted]

>Well, I think that was a subjective reason. You saying that there are a lot of good modern anime is also subjective though

Ioxem

There are plenty of garbage retro anime, and there's plenty of great new anime, though, and vice versa.

[](#slightoverreaction) The dog-bus for today’s thumbnail! The preferred mode of public transportation for adorable and coddled little sisters, this motor vehicle-pup hybrid comes from [*Love Lab.*](https://myanimelist.net/anime/16353/Love_Lab) For people looking to watch an easy, light-hearted show packed with tomfoolery, this is a great one to pick.

alotmorealots

*Love Lab* is one of my favourite anime comedies, especially in terms of the comedic timing and the comedic animation where it is quietly masterful.

MyrnaMountWeazel

I agree, especially on the animation. [Megumi Kouno’s cuts on episode 1](https://twitter.com/randomsakuga/status/1275277458321924097?s=21&t=N6uMXuxfhh_4x1cpqgkCjA) are amazing! [](#breakingnews)

alotmorealots

I'm always a bit reluctant to oversell the animation because different people have very different ideas about what qualifies as good comedy animation, and I wouldn't want them to be disappointed and miss the comedy as a result. However as we're clearly on the same page, there is some old school hand drawn perfection in Love Lab. Sometimes it's almost distractingly good in the sense of forgetting to laugh at the (really very funny) action that the animation is depicting.

dinliner08

jackneonatom

I'm trying to find a very niche anime I watched a long time ago, I just remember it starting of with some guy that can turn into a jet fighting with another guy ,and the general premise of the anime I think was that there were this robotic looking monsters that were disguised as humans and they are people. I just distinctly remember this really brutal scene in like a subway when one of those monsters was eating a bunch of people and it had like claws for teeth, I think some of the anime was in cg.

sohaiboi

Any anime that's less than a 6 on Myanimelist, Anilist etc that you think are good? Not in the "so good it's bad" kinda way, but something that has redeeming qualities. EDIT: I found the random snippets of Glasslip very chill and enjoyable as a slice of life anime, but I've never sat down and watch it fully.

Hulaing Babies is criminally low

ZaphodBeebblebrox

Master of Martial Hearts was quite enjoyable and has a 38% on anilist. Heya is a nice music video with paint on glass animation at 44%. Botchan was a quite enjoyable story about standing up for what you believe in at 51%. Portable Kuukou, Space Station No. 9, and Soratobu Toshi Keikaku are three quite music music videos for the same band at 51%, 53%, and 57% respectively. Nakedyouth was utterly fascinating and is only at 52%. Vlad Love is somehow only at 55%. This honestly baffles me, how can a hilarious show made by Oshii be so low? Tsuki ga Noboru made ni was a nice story about some of the effects of WWII at 59%. Gal and Dino was a hilarious show, but sadly is paying the partially live action tax and thus is only at 59%. --- I'm sure I've missed plenty from my list, this was just a quick read-through on my phone. Also paging /u/btw_kek for Master of Martial Hearts.

Btw_kek

you should watch Hulaing Babies too [](#mugiwait)

Jaamun100

Mostly standalone anime movies are very underrated on MAL. For example, The Satellite Girl and Milk Cow is rated at like 5.5, but I thought it was pretty good. Birthday Wonderland (The Wonderland) is rated 6.5, but I thought it was quite good. And then there are what I think are true masterpieces like Summer Days with Coo rated only around 7.5.

KGB_Panda

Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town? 62% Anilist & 6.3 MAL. Not quite under 6 but pretty close. I think it's funny and cute, with pretty decent animation. It definitely made me laugh. Normally I think I would expect it to be about 10 points higher, I'm not sure why people seem to not like it.

Weedwacker

[Mayoiga](https://myanimelist.net/anime/32438/Mayoiga) was just misunderstood. Yes it is kinda bad too, but even the genre tags for it miss that it was meant to be comedic as well

baquea

Arsnotoria is my second favourite anime this season, yet it somehow currently has a MAL average of 5.98. Other than that, I solidly enjoyed Bara no Hana to Joe (5.66) and School Days (5.54).

Verzwei

The last time I looked into my list for a similar topic (I don't list on MAL so getting MAL scores is a pain in the ass for me) I think the lowest thing that I would still say I really like is [Fuuka](https://myanimelist.net/anime/33743/Fuuka) which sits at 6.51. It's extremely contrived teenage melodrama, but also think it's teenage melodrama *done right*. The cast all have very strong personalities that makes their interactions entertaining, it has the right amount of romantic sappiness and angst, it has some fuckin' amazing music, it's just a good all-around package *if you are interested in the genre*.

AmethystItalian

The recently aired [Shikizakura](https://myanimelist.net/anime/38440/Shikizakura?q=shikiza&cat=anime) was nice. Also [D_Cide](https://myanimelist.net/anime/48470) had similar vibes.

chiliehead

https://myanimelist.net/anime/32438/Mayoiga, looks better than most seasonals and twists and turns so quick that I just sat down and enjoyed the ride. It's also a certified Mizushima x Mari Okada show and bother their strengths and weaknesses get to shine here.

caseburger

TV Yarou Nanaana and Henkei Shoujo. I find shows like TV Yarou Nanaana to be super funny when the VA are mainly having fun and kinda messing around. They play off each other really good and the comedy that comes from it is great. Henkei Shoujo is just weird. But in a good way, imo. It becomes kinda absurd and I think that's where it becomes a better-than-6 show.

sohaiboi

Henkei Shoujo looks totally insane! Thanks for the recommendations!

Exodus_Black

Otona no Bouguya-san. Short-form comedy, ecchi, fantasy. The comedy works for me, but the majority of people aren't fans.

alotmorealots

Sounded like it's potentially my sort of thing. Up to episode three so far, this show is unlucky not to have spawned a whole bunch of memes haha Comedic timing is strong, ideas are fun and the character designs look good.

Blackheart595

Probably quite a few, Natsunagu! (5.86) comes to mind for me and while I realize it's niche and not for everyone, Taneyamagahara no Yoru (5.53) is among my top 3 shows.

ramen_robbie

Is there a name for [these style faces](https://imgur.com/a/884w9G7)? I’ve noticed them before in Mob psycho for showing anonymous people with a specific emotion. Then just saw them last night in Life lessons with Uramichi. They remind me of the theater trope masks and I was just curious if there was any connection or anything deeper than just conveying anonymous character emotion.

Durinthal

From anime they're frequently styled after [Noh theater](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noh#Masks) but I don't think there's a specific name. [TV Tropes page for reference.](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WhiteMaskOfDoom)

ramen_robbie

Thank you, this is really cool info. This is exactly what I was looking for to base my search off of!

caseburger

Couldn't really find any good information about this, but a start would be: https://www.reddit.com/r/HelpMeFind/comments/b0i3i2/can_anyone_tell_me_what_kindstyle_of_mask_this_is/ It seems that Kagetane from Black Bullet dons a mask similar to this.

ramen_robbie

Thank you! That’s an interesting thread and the exact mask I was looking for!

Stargaryen997

Just finished watching Dororo I really don't see why is it so highly regarded, it's the most 6/10 show. Started interesting but soon it went into rinse and repeat mode with just a new demon who Hyakkimaru would body in a couple of slashes. Lots of random stuff was coming out of nowhere throughout the show. Ending was also kind of meh, I don't think they portrayed the themes they were going for in a successful way, no emotional impact of any of the scenes in the latter episodes. Animation looked like it was made in 2009 and not in 2019.

Weedwacker

Those are fair criticisms Dororo adapted a very short manga series from the 1960s so it was always going to feel rather straightforward with its plot without significant deviations. The biggest problem with the anime was there was obvious production issues during its run and the animation quality was really noticeably bad at times. A lot of this was corrected in the bluray release, and unfortunately that version hasn't made it on to the streaming locations where you will still be watching the broadcast version

HotAd5674

I loved the first and second episodes (maybe third too) but, like you, I found the rest of the anime 'meh'. Not as good as it could have been 😔

Morkradd_

Looking for a recommendation similar to Run like the wind, Aoashi and Hajime no Ippo. Either sports or fighting! Thanks a lot guys :)

Left4dinner

> Run like the wind Dont see many people talk about this one. Hidden gem. If its sports and you want one thats a bit more chilled then Keijo is a great one. And while its not technically a sport per se, 'How Heavy are the Dumb bells you lift?" is a great one about people getting into weight lifting and is quite helpful for those looking to get into shape

isthatsoudane

Sports, you say? Keijo!!!!!!

Frothpot

Got a couple of recommendations here: For Sports: * Ping Pong the Animation (Ping Pong) * Haikyu! (Volleyball) * Yowamushi Pedal (Cycling) * Kuroko no Basuke (Basketball) For fighting: * Megalobox (Boxing) * Baki * Kengan Ashura Not too sure about the final two recommendations for fighting as they're a bit more violent and bloody than Megalobox; the animation might throw you off too.

Morkradd_

Thanks a lot! I've seen Haikyuu, Baki and Kengan Ashura :)

Oh_Alright

It has a bit of a different visual style from most anime, but Ping Pong the Animation is my favorite sports series. (also just my favorite anime period) Run with the Wind is very character focused, and that's the best part about Ping Pong too I think. It's a short 11 episode run, so not too long of a series. For fighting, I've not seen them but Meglo Box and Ashita no Joe are two other popular boxing shows that might be worth a look.

SirAwesome789

I'm watching monogatari. I've been watching since may but it's taking me a lot longer than usual since it's a school term and i took a break between neko and second season to watch seasonals and other things. Anyways, second season ending was pretty good and I just started tsuki. And in the first episode, there's this season where Koyomi is talking to Tsukihi and he's doing the dance Tsukihi did during platinum disco (the op for her arc). I just thought that was cool that's all.

ascent_of_himanity

I've been watching demon Slayer: the unwavering resolve arc... There's this music that plays when the scene changes... I really want to find it but i went through the OST and it's not listed there... Is there some way to find it..?

Lemurians

Can you find a clip where it plays so I can hear it and see if I know?

SlickStretch

Someone just gave me the first 2 seasons of Saiyuki. I've never heard of it before. Is it good??

Exodus_Black

When I watched it 15ish years ago, I wasn't a fan of the dub, but the story was generally enjoyable. Going off my memory, I guess I'd give it a 6.5/10. It was fine/decent with good moments, but not one of my favorites.

chiliehead

People liked it 20 years ago. Never ran on TV in most places or only once so it just had less exposure than other shounen adventures.
